本日のクリスマスイブ、名古屋はあいにくの雨模様で少し暖かくもあり、クリスマスっぽくないなのですが、街を歩くと個人のお宅や店先がイルミネーションなどで飾られており楽しませてもらっています。

 

子供のころ、クリスマスイブというとケーキやチキン料理などの他に楽しみと言えば、テレビで放映される外国のクリスマスのアニメでした。

暖炉や煙突がある日本とは全く違う家や街の様子に目が釘付けになりました。みなさまはお気に入りのクリスマス映画や本などはありますか。

 

私は小学校の図書館に置かれていたレイモンド・ブリックスの「さむがりやのサンタ」の絵本が大好きでした。クリスマスの時期でなくとも読んでいました。レイモンド・ブリックスといえば「スノーマン」や「風が吹くとき」で有名ですが、図書館でこの絵本を見つけてから、なぜかこの寒がりで不機嫌なサンタが登場する、ちょっとシニカルなお話にはまり、大人になってから英語版も購入してしまいました。子どもにも読み聞かせをしたため、クリスマスイブの夜はサンタのために赤ワインを用意するという我が家の恒例行事が生まれ、子供が寝てからサンタの代わりに私が有難くいただいておりました。

 

日本では見たこともない外国の街並みや文化は刺激的で惹かれてしまいますが、最近では日本の文化が外国の人に新鮮で強烈な印象を与えているようで、昨年のエミー賞では非英語作品にもかかわらず「SHOGUN（将軍）」が監督賞をはじめ１８の賞を獲得しました。そして「将軍」をきっかけにアメリカや他の国で日本の時代劇がブームとなっているようです。以前から熱烈な時代劇ファンは海外にもいたのでしょうが、現在は若者などにもファン層が広まっていて、「将軍」をきっかけに、往年のスター俳優、三船敏郎さんが出演する「羅生門」や「七人の侍」、勝新太郎さんの「座頭市」なども脚光を浴び、日本独特の撮影手法や俳優の演技に釘付けになっているのだとか。

 

映画の生まれた国、フランスでも日本の時代劇の人気が高まり、日本では注目されていない作品を掘り起こし上映するというフランスらしい企画も行われているそうで、若い監督や俳優にはチャンスかもしれませんね。

 

しかし時代劇といえばセットなどにかなりの資金が必要です。撮影では当時を再現するために衣装から小道具まで細部にこだわった演出がされてきました。髪形なども今とは全く違うので、リアリティを持たせるためにはかなりの技術が求められます。草履ひとつにしても、年齢や階級などにより変えるというこだわりは日本ならではでしょう。

 

時代劇の魅力のひとつとして、現代劇では声高に訴えることができないテーマを時代劇を通して間接的に表現できることが挙げられます。ルールや縛りが多いようで実は自由度が高いのだそうです。日本では時代劇映画やドラマの衰退が著しいといわれていますが、まさか外国で日本独自の世界観を表現する時代劇が評価される日が来るなんて、と不思議な感覚になります。日本人の感性のまま表現しても、そのまま魅力が伝わるとというのは嬉しいことです。普遍的な感性というものが人にはあるのかもしれませんね。

Today, on Christmas Eve, Nagoya is unfortunately rainy and a bit warm, not feeling very Christmassy at all. But walking through the city, I’m enjoying seeing private homes and storefronts decorated with illuminations and such.

 

When I was a child, besides cake and chicken dishes, I looked forward to foreign Christmas cartoons broadcast on TV on Christmas Eve.

I was fascinated by the houses and towns that were completely different from Japan, with fireplaces and chimneys. Do you have any favorite Christmas movies or books?

I loved Raymond Briggs’ picture book “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas,” which was in my elementary school library. I read it even when it wasn’t Christmas time. Raymond Briggs is famous for “The Snowman” and “When the Wind Blows,” but after finding this book at the library, I somehow became hooked on this slightly cynical picture book featuring a cold-sensitive and grumpy Santa, and even bought the English version as an adult. I read it to my children, and it became a tradition in our house to prepare red wine for Santa on Christmas Eve, which I gratefully drank instead of Santa.

 

Foreign cities and cultures I’ve never seen are exciting and appealing, but these days, Japanese culture seems to be making a fresh and strong impression on foreigners. At last year’s Emmy Awards, despite being a non-English language work, “SHOGUN” won 18 awards, including Best Director. It seems that “SHOGUN” has sparked a boom in Japanese period dramas in the United States and other countries. While passionate fans of period dramas likely existed overseas before, the fan base has now expanded to include younger audiences. Following “Shogun,” classic films like ‘Rashomon’ and “Seven Samurai,” starring the legendary actor Toshiro Mifune, and Katsu Shintaro’s “Zatoichi” series are also gaining attention. People are reportedly captivated by Japan’s unique cinematography and the actors’ performances.

 

Even in France, the birthplace of cinema, Japanese period dramas are gaining popularity. There are French-style projects underway to unearth and screen works that haven’t received much attention in Japan, which could be a chance for young directors and actors.

 

However, period dramas require significant funding for sets and production. Filming involves meticulous attention to detail, from costumes to props, to authentically recreate the era. Hairstyles, too, differ entirely from today, demanding considerable skill to achieve realism. Even something like a pair of straw sandals might be changed based on age or social class – a level of detail perhaps unique to Japan.

 

One appeal of period dramas is their ability to indirectly express themes that modern dramas cannot address so directly. They seem constrained by rules yet actually offer considerable creative freedom. While Japanese period films and dramas are said to be in sharp decline domestically, it feels strange to think that period dramas expressing Japan’s unique worldview might one day be appreciated abroad. It’s heartening that their charm can resonate even when expressed purely through Japanese sensibilities. Perhaps there is such a thing as universal sensibility.

みなさま、もう大掃除には取り掛かっていらっしゃいますか？

普段から綺麗にしているから必要ない。できれば暖かい時期にしたい。などなど色々とご意見はあることでしょう。わざわざ年末の忙しい時期に、寒さに耐えながら掃除をするのは合理的ではないようにも思えます。

ただ年末の掃除は普段の掃除とは違い１年の穢れを払い清め、新しい年神様を迎え入れるという意味合いもあるため、全くやらないというのは私としては気が引けてしまいます。

 

平安時代には宮中で年末に煤払いが行われ、江戸時代になると庶民の間でも１２月１３日の「正月事始め」から年末まで障子の張り替えなどの大掛かりな掃除をする習慣が浸透していたといいます。

しかし現在は忙しくてそんなに何日もかけて掃除をする時間はないという方もいることでしょう。様々な新しい掃除道具や洗剤を目にするたび、昔のようには動けないなぁと憂鬱になっていたところ、大掃除の心得なるお話が耳に入ってきました。

 

年末の大掃除は家中を完璧にピカピカにするのが目的ではなく、無心で掃除をしながら１年を振り返り、自分と向き合う時間なのだと。掃除で少し片付いた余白のスペースと、余裕のある落ち着いた心に年神様は来てくださるのだそうです。

 

掃除の手を抜く言い訳のようにも聞こえますが、自分に都合の良いお話はすぐに取り入れる性分ですので、１年間頑張った自分を褒めながら、落ち着いた心持ちを意識し、出来る範囲で丁寧に掃除したいと思います。

Everyone, have you started your year-end cleaning yet? Some might say it’s unnecessary since they keep things tidy year-round, or prefer to do it during warmer months. It does seem rather unreasonable to endure the cold and clean specifically during the busy year-end period.

However, year-end cleaning differs from regular cleaning. It carries a religious significance: purifying the year’s impurities and welcoming the New Year deity. Personally, I feel hesitant about skipping it entirely.

 

During the Heian period, the imperial court performed year-end soot-cleaning rituals. By the Edo period, the custom had spread among commoners: starting on December 13th, the “beginning of New Year preparations,” they would undertake major cleaning tasks like replacing shoji paper until year’s end.

But nowadays, many are too busy to spend several days cleaning. I, too, was feeling down about not being able to move as nimbly as I once did. Then I heard about the true spirit of year-end cleaning.

 

The purpose of year-end cleaning isn’t to make the entire house spotless. It’s a time to reflect on the past year and confront oneself while cleaning mindfully. It’s said that the Year God visits the slightly tidier, more spacious areas and the calm, composed heart that comes with a little breathing room.

 

It might sound like an excuse to cut corners, but I’m the type to readily embrace stories that suit me. So, I plan to clean only what I can manage, praising myself for a year of hard work and maintaining a calm state of mind.

先日のブログで本日１２月２１日は最強開運日の「天赦日」とのことでしたので色々と思い巡らせてみましたが、行動に移せることは何も浮かばず、とりあえず心の中で小さく何か決意表明をしようかと思っています。

 

さて、クリスマスが近づき楽しみにしている方もいれば、通常運転の方もいらっしゃることでしょう。個人的には後者なのですが、ここ数年は家族のために何とか気分を盛り上げてきた感じです。現在の日本のクリスマスはあまり宗教色がなく、親しい人との楽しいイベントとして捉えている人が多いようで、私のような人も多いのではないでしょうか。

今年は家族がクリスマスを友人と過ごすというので、ちょっと喜んでおりましたら、クリスマスの夕食は後日にしてね、と言われました。えっ別の日にする意味とは？と困惑…。特に豪勢な料理を作るわけでもなく、１年に１回登場するクリスマスっぽいテーブルクロスやキャンドルを出すくらいなのですが、小さい頃からの刷り込みが強いのか、省略することは考えられないようです。

 

みなさまは定番のクリスマス料理をお持ちでしょうか。日本ではクリスマス料理といえばチキンというイメージですが、実はチキンを食べるのは日本独特の習慣なのだそうです。アメリカなどはターキー（七面鳥）を丸ごと焼くことが多く、七面鳥が手に入りにくい日本ではそれに近いチキンが主流となったのかもしれません。某ファーストフード店の宣伝もかなり影響しているといわれていますが。

 

ヨーロッパなどでは実は豚肉がメインの国も多いそうです。

クリスマスマーケットが有名なドイツでは、定番のクリスマス料理は？のアンケートに対する一番多い答えが「ウインナーとポテトサラダ」だそうです。かなりシンプルで驚きました。またドイツでは普段肉を食べることが多くクリスマスには魚を食べる人も多いのだとか。なかでも「鯉」が人気なのだそうです。最近日本ではあまり食べなくなりましたが、ドナウ川など大河が多いドイツでは淡水魚の鯉をよく食べるのだとか。特にクリスマスには「カルプフェン・ブラウ」というマリネした鯉を香草で焼く料理が定番なのだそうです。昔食べた「鯉こく」が美味しかった思い出はありますが、さて焼いた鯉はどのようなお味なのでしょうか。世界にはまだまだ未知の料理があり、クリスマス料理の概念も変わります。

 

またクリスマスには欠かせないケーキといえば、可愛く飾り付けられたデコレーションケーキが思い浮かびますが、これも日本だけのようで、海外ではクッキーやシュトーレンなどの焼き菓子が主流なのだとか。ドイツの「シュトーレン」やイタリアの「パネトーネ」などは日本でも最近よく見かけるようになりました。

 

ではあの苺と生クリームのケーキはどこから来たのでしょう？

日本で初めてクリスマスケーキとして売り出されたのは１９１０年、ペコちゃんで有名な洋菓子メーカー「不二家」がドライフルーツを使ったケーキを販売しましました。その後１９２２年に生クリームと苺を使った華やかなデコレーションケーキをクリスマスに販売したところ人気となり現在に至るそうです。焼き菓子もいいですが、やはり生クリームと苺には勝てません。日本人でよかったです。

 

プレゼントも海外では子供だけではなく、友人、家族など大人同士のプレゼント交換も恒例行事とのこと。高価なものではなく、カードや靴下など相手を思って贈ることに意味があるようです。用意するのは大変そうにも思えますが、いくつになってもプレゼントを贈ったりもらったりするのは嬉しいものです。

まだ間に合いますのでカードなど用意してみるのはいかがでしょうか。

In my recent blog post, I mentioned that today, December 21st, is the most auspicious day for good fortune, known as “Ten-sha-bi.” I spent some time pondering this, but nothing concrete came to mind that I could act on. For now, I think I’ll just make a small resolution in my heart.

 

Now, as Christmas approaches, some people are looking forward to it, while others are just going about their usual routine. Personally, I’m in the latter camp, but for the past few years, I’ve tried to get into the spirit for my family. Christmas in Japan these days doesn’t have much religious connotation; many people see it as a fun event with loved ones. I imagine there are quite a few people like me.

This year, my family said they’d be spending Christmas with friends, which made me a bit happy. Then they added, “We’ll have Christmas dinner another day.” Huh? Why do it on a different day? I was confused… It’s not like I make anything extravagant; I just bring out the Christmas-themed tablecloth and candles that appear once a year. But maybe the conditioning from childhood is strong, because skipping it seems unthinkable.

 

Do you have any traditional Christmas dishes? In Japan, Christmas food is often associated with chicken, but apparently eating chicken is actually a uniquely Japanese custom. In places like America, they often roast a whole turkey, and since turkey is hard to come by in Japan, chicken became the mainstream substitute. It’s also said that a certain fast-food chain’s advertising had a significant influence.

 

In Europe, pork is actually the main dish in many countries.

In Germany, famous for its Christmas markets, the most common answer to “What’s the classic Christmas dish?” is apparently “sausage and potato salad.” I was surprised by how simple it is. Also, since Germans eat meat frequently during the year, many opt for fish at Christmas. Among these, “carp” is particularly popular. While it’s not eaten much in Japan these days, Germany, with its many large rivers like the Danube, frequently consumes freshwater carp. Specifically for Christmas, a dish called “Karpfen Blau” – marinated carp grilled with herbs – is apparently a staple. I have fond memories of delicious “koikoku” (carp soup) I had long ago, but I wonder what grilled carp tastes like. The world still holds many unknown cuisines, and the concept of Christmas food changes.

 

Speaking of essential Christmas cakes, beautifully decorated cakes come to mind, but this seems unique to Japan. Overseas, baked goods like cookies and stollen are more common. German stollen and Italian panettone are becoming increasingly visible in Japan too.

So where did that strawberry and whipped cream cake originate?

The first Christmas cake sold in Japan was in 1910, when Fujiya, the Western confectionery maker famous for Peko-chan, sold a cake using dried fruit. Then, in 1922, they sold a lavishly decorated cake with fresh cream and strawberries for Christmas, which became popular and continues to this day. Baked goods are nice, but they just can’t beat fresh cream and strawberries. I’m glad to be Japanese.

 

In other countries, gift-giving isn’t just for children. It’s common for adults to exchange presents with friends and family too. The meaning lies in the thoughtfulness behind the gift—it doesn’t have to be expensive, just something like a card or socks. Preparing gifts might seem like a lot of work, but no matter how old you get, giving and receiving presents is always a joy.

 

There’s still time, so why not try preparing cards or something?

本日は「相続と骨董品買取のお話」の続編ですが、今日のお話は鑑賞石・銘石であります。

 

 

 

 

買取にお伺いしますと、鑑賞石・銘石も買取してほしいというご依頼が結構ありまして、そういえば、実家にもリビングや玄関先に飾っていたりしていたことを思い出しまして、あの頃ブームだったのでしょうね。

 

鑑賞石・銘石とは、その美しさや希少性から鑑賞の対象となる石のことでして、昭和の時代には石ブームがあり、リビングや玄関先に飾っていたお宅も多かったのではないでしょうか。現在も多くの愛好家いる鑑賞石・銘石ですが、その歴史文化は長く、歴史の中で人々の美的感覚や価値観と共に発展してきました。

 

日本では古くは鎌倉時代に、天皇や貴族、武士たちが自然の造形美を愛でる文化として発展しましたが、山のような形状の石を山景に見立て自然の風景を石の中に凝縮して楽しむ「山景石」や、石に現れた菊の花や梅の花のような模様を鑑賞する「菊花石」「梅花石」などが、当時の鑑賞石として珍重されていました。

 

では、それらの鑑賞石などの魅力は。

その石そのものの美しさや希少性もそうなのですが、長い年月をかけて自然が作り出した造形美や、そこに込められた歴史や文化、産地や種類、形状、模様、色合い、などなどさまざまな要素をもって魅力が生まれ人々を惹きつけています。

自然物が偶然にも数億年かけて生み出した石に、模様の美しさに魅了されたり、景色に見立てる想像力を掻き立てられたりと、この「生きた芸術品」には奥深い世界が広がっているようですね。

 

少しですが、代表的な鑑賞石・銘石をご説明いたしましょう。

 

・太湖石

中国の蘇州付近にある太湖周辺の丘陵から切り出される穴の多い複雑な形の奇石。太湖付近の丘や湖に浮かぶ島は青白い石灰岩でできているが、かつて内海だった太湖の水による長年の侵食によって石灰岩には多くの穴が開き、複雑な形と化した。

太湖石は蘇州はじめ中国各地の庭園で鑑賞や瞑想などのために置かれており、北宋の徽宗皇帝は人民を徴用して、太湖石などを都に運ばせた。これを花石綱というようです。

 

・糸魚川翡翠　

新潟県糸魚川周辺で産出される日本の国石（国の石）。5億年以上前に形成された非常に希少な宝石であり、世界最古の翡翠文化の発祥地であります。白、緑（様々な色調）、青、黒など多様な色があり、縄文時代から加工され日本各地へ流通しており、勾玉やアクセサリーが作られ、海岸で原石を探す「ヒスイ拾い」も人気のようです。なお、産地は国の天然記念物に指定され採取は厳しく制限されています。

 

・神居古潭石

神居古潭石（カムイコタンセキ）は、北海道旭川市の神居古潭で採掘される鉱石。溶岩が地殻変動による圧力を受けて生成された変成岩の一種で、主なカラーは緑・黒・藍などです。これらの色が複雑に混ざり合ったもののほか、全体が黒色のもの・緑色のものなども流通しています。

 

・菊花石

岐阜県本巣市などが産地として有名で、輝緑凝灰岩の中に放射状に成長した結晶が菊の花のように見えることから名付けられました。昭和27年には特別天然記念物に指定され、その美しさから多くの愛好家を魅了しています。

 

・梅花石
北海道夕張市の空知川や北九州の門司で採取される石で、約3億5千万年前の古生代石炭紀の海底に繁殖したウミユリという棘皮動物の化石が梅の花のように見えることから名付けられました。
「菊花石」「桜石」とともに日本三大奇石のひとつとされ、その歴史的な価値も高く評価されています。

 

また、それらの鑑賞石・銘石の価値の評価ですが

 

・石の美しさ形状、模様、色合いなど、自分の好みや感性に合う石を選びましょう。

・希少性産地や種類、形状、模様など、希少性の高い石は、価値も高くなります。

・歴史的な価値過去の文化や歴史背景を理解し、歴史的な価値のある石を選ぶことも重要です。

・状態傷や欠け、変色などがないか、状態の良い石を選びましょう。

 

鑑定書のある場合は、その石の種類、産地、年代、状態などを専門家が鑑定したもので、その石の価値を証明する重要な書類ですので、大切に保管しましょう。
また、箱は石を保護するだけでなく、その石の歴史や価値を伝える役割も担いますので、鑑定書の他に箱があることで、鑑賞石・銘石の価値はさらに高まります。

 

また、これらの鑑賞石・銘石は保管方法によってその美しさを長く保てますので、直射日光や高温多湿を避け、埃や汚れから守るようにしましょう。

 

 

鑑賞石・銘石のその美しさ、希少性、歴史的な価値や魅力などをお伝えいたしましたが、いかがでしたでしょうか。

Today’s topic is a follow-up to “Inheritance and Antique Purchasing,” focusing on decorative stones and famous stones.

 

When we visit for purchases, we often receive requests to buy decorative stones and famous stones as well. Come to think of it, I remember them being displayed in the living room or entranceway of my childhood home. I suppose they were quite the trend back then.

 

Appreciation stones and inscribed stones are stones valued for their beauty and rarity, making them objects of admiration. During the Showa era, there was a stone craze, and many homes likely displayed them in their living rooms or entryways. While appreciation stones and inscribed stones still have many enthusiasts today, their history and culture are long, evolving alongside people’s aesthetic sensibilities and values throughout history.

 

In Japan, this culture developed as early as the Kamakura period, where emperors, nobles, and samurai appreciated the natural sculptural beauty of stones. Stones shaped like mountains, known as “mountain view stones” (yama-gokei-seki), were prized for condensing natural landscapes within them. Similarly, stones displaying patterns resembling chrysanthemum or plum blossoms, called “chrysanthemum stones” (kikuka-seki) and “plum blossom stones” (bai-ka-seki), were treasured as decorative stones of the time.

 

So, what is the appeal of these and other ornamental stones?

These “living works of art” reveal a profound world—whether captivating us with the beauty of patterns fortuitously created by nature over hundreds of millions of years, or sparking our imagination to envision landscapes within them.

 

 

Let me briefly introduce some representative ornamental and famous stones.

・Taihu Stone

These are oddly shaped stones with many holes, quarried from the hills around Lake Tai near Suzhou, China. The hills and islands floating in Lake Tai are made of pale blue limestone. Over time, the water of Lake Tai—once an inland sea—eroded the limestone, creating numerous holes and giving the stones their complex forms.

Taihu stones are placed in gardens throughout China, including Suzhou, for appreciation and meditation. Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty conscripted laborers to transport Taihu stones and other rocks to the capital. This operation is known as the “Flower Stone Fleet.”

 

・Itoigawa Jade

Japan’s national stone, produced around Itoigawa in Niigata Prefecture. Formed over 500 million years ago, it is an extremely rare gemstone and the birthplace of the world’s oldest jade culture. It comes in diverse colors including white, green (various shades), blue, and black. Processed since the Jomon period, it circulated throughout Japan, used to make magatama pendants and accessories. “Jade hunting”—searching for raw stones along the coast—is also popular. The production area is designated a National Natural Monument, and extraction is strictly restricted.

 

・Kamui Kotan Stone

Kamui Kotan Stone is an ore mined in Kamui Kotan, Asahikawa City, Hokkaido. It is a type of metamorphic rock formed when lava underwent pressure due to crustal movement. Its primary colors are green, black, and indigo. Varieties circulating include those with complex mixtures of these colors, as well as entirely black or entirely green stones.

 

・Chrysanthemum Stone

Famous for being produced in places like Motosu City, Gifu Prefecture, it was named for the crystalline formations growing radially within pyroxene tuff, resembling chrysanthemum flowers. Designated a Special Natural Monument in 1952, its beauty captivates many enthusiasts.

 

・Plum Blossom Stone
This stone is mined in the Sorachi River in Yubari City, Hokkaido, and in Moji, Kitakyushu. It is named for the fossils of sea lilies, echinoderms that thrived on the seafloor during the Carboniferous period of the Paleozoic era approximately 350 million years ago, which resemble plum blossoms.
Alongside Chrysanthemum Stone and Cherry Blossom Stone, it is considered one of Japan’s Three Great Curious Stones and is highly valued for its historical significance.

This coming Sunday, December 21st, marks the year’s final most auspicious day for good fortune, coinciding with both Tenchōbi (Day of Heavenly Pardon) and Ichiryūmanbai-bi (Day of a Single Grain Multiplying a Thousandfold). Arriving at the year’s close, this lucky day is not only highly auspicious but also ideal for deep cleaning and decluttering to prepare for the new year.

 

As the name suggests, Ten-Sha-Bi is considered “the day when heaven forgives all sins” and is regarded as the most auspicious day in the Japanese calendar. Compared to Ichiryūmanbai-Bi, it occurs only a few times a year, making it a precious fortune-opening day. It is considered ideal for all kinds of new beginnings, such as starting something new, making decisions, or drawing a line under things.

On the other hand, Ichiryūmanbai-bi means “a single grain yields ten thousandfold,” signifying a day when small beginnings grow into something great. Therefore, it is considered the “best day to start something.” It’s also ideal for setting wedding dates or registering marriages. The image is one of seeds of happiness swelling greatly.

Additionally, investing money on this day is believed to yield substantial future returns. It’s considered a favorable day for money-related activities like buying those shoes you’ve wanted, purchasing or starting to use a new wallet, or buying lottery tickets. Other recommended actions include starting a project, opening a store or business, or opening a bank account.

 

 

 

The end of the year inevitably tends to be busy with tasks. Work deadlines, cleaning the house, preparing for the New Year holidays… and so on.

年の瀬も押し迫り、まもなく二十四節気のひとつにも数えられる冬至を迎えますが、今年は「寒さ厳しく…」とはいかないようです。ただ、日が暮れるのは本当に早くなりました。

冬至は、夜が最も長く、太陽の出ている昼の時間が一年で最も短くなる日のことをいいます。令和7年は12月22日に当たります。

冬至を迎えると、暦の上では冬の真ん中にあたりますが、冬至が一年で最も寒い訳ではありません。冬至以降、寒さは増していき、大寒が最も寒くなるとされています。

 

 

日本の冬至は、やはり柚子のお風呂にカボチャを食べること。冬至には「ん」のついた野菜を食べるといいと言われていますが、その代表がかぼちゃ、「なんきん」です。かぼちゃのほかには、にんじん、大根、ゴンボ（ごぼう）にこんにゃく。ほとんどが冬においしい根菜ですね。

 

日本で冬至にかぼちゃを食べる習慣の背景には、冬の保存食としての特性と栄養価の高さも関係しています。

かぼちゃは、夏から秋にかけて収穫されますが、保存が効くので冬でもおいしく食べられる数少ない野菜の一つ。また、かぼちゃはビタミンAやカロテンを豊富に含み、風邪予防や体力維持に役立つとされていました。寒さが厳しくなる冬至に栄養を補給する目的で、かぼちゃを食べるのは理にかなっていると言えます。

 

ただ、この風習はそれほど古いものではないようです。江戸時代の文献には「冬至にかぼちゃ」という内容の記述はなく、明治以降に生まれた比較的新しい習慣と考えられています。

 

かぼちゃは栄養豊富なうえにいろいろな料理にして食べられて、魅力的な野菜です。ただ、丸ごとひとつ買うと切り分けるのにひと苦労。ですが、このごろようやく安心してできるカボチャの切り分け方をマスターしました。

 

まるごとかぼちゃを調理するとき、まずぶつかる難関が、硬い皮に包丁を入れて欲しい分だけ切り分けること。レンジでやわらかくしてから切るというやり方もありますが、残りを生のまま取っておきたい場合には使えない方法ですよね。そこで、以前テレビやSNSで見た「菜箸を使う」という裏技を思い出しまして、実践してみました。

 

菜箸で穴を開け、そこを支点にしててこの原理で切り分けるということなのですが……。まず、ヘタの反対側の中心に菜箸を差し入れ、箸の先が種のある部分に達するくらいまで差し込みます。実際にやってみると思いのほか箸がするすると刺さり、簡単に穴が開きます。

つぎに、菜箸を抜いてできた穴に包丁の切っ先を突き立てるように上から包丁を差し込み、そこを支点に包丁の柄を下向きに下ろします。てこの原理を利用することで、大きな力を使わなくてもスッと下まで切り下ろせます。

かぼちゃを180度回転させ、反対側も同様に切り下ろします。ある程度まで切れ目を入れたらあとは手で割ってもOKです。

As the year draws to a close, we will soon welcome the winter solstice, one of the twenty-four solar terms. However, this year doesn’t seem to be living up to the saying “bitter cold…” Still, the days have truly grown short.

The winter solstice is the day with the longest night and the shortest period of daylight in the entire year. In Reiwa 7 (2025), it falls on December 22nd.

While the winter solstice marks the calendar’s midpoint of winter, it isn’t necessarily the coldest day of the year. The cold intensifies after the solstice, with the Great Cold (Daikan) period considered the coldest time.

 

In Japan, winter solstice traditions include taking a yuzu bath and eating pumpkin. It’s said eating vegetables with the syllable “n” is auspicious on the winter solstice, with pumpkin (“nankin”) being the prime example. Other suitable vegetables include carrots, daikon radish, burdock root (gobo), and konjac. Most are root vegetables that taste especially good in winter.

 

The custom of eating pumpkin on the winter solstice in Japan is also linked to its characteristics as a winter preserved food and its high nutritional value.

Pumpkins are harvested from summer to autumn, but they store well, making them one of the few vegetables that remain delicious even in winter. Pumpkins are also rich in vitamin A and carotene, traditionally believed to help prevent colds and maintain physical strength. Eating pumpkin on the winter solstice, when the cold intensifies, makes sense as a way to replenish nutrients.

 

However, this custom doesn’t seem to be particularly old. Edo period documents contain no references to “pumpkin on the winter solstice,” suggesting it’s a relatively new tradition that emerged after the Meiji era.

 

Pumpkin is a fascinating vegetable, being both nutrient-rich and versatile in cooking. However, buying a whole one can be a hassle to cut up. But recently, I’ve finally mastered a reliable way to cut pumpkin.

 

When cooking a whole pumpkin, the first major hurdle is cutting through the tough skin to get the desired portion. While microwaving it to soften before cutting is one method, it’s not practical if you want to keep the rest raw. That’s when I remembered a trick I’d seen before on TV and social media: using cooking chopsticks. I decided to give it a try.

 

The idea is to poke a hole with chopsticks, then use that hole as a fulcrum to slice using leverage… First, insert the chopsticks into the center of the opposite side from the stem, pushing them in until the tips reach the seed cavity. Surprisingly, the chopsticks slide in smoothly and create a hole easily.

Next, remove the chopsticks and insert the tip of your knife into the hole from above. Using that hole as a fulcrum, lower the knife handle downward. By leveraging this lever principle, you can slice all the way through smoothly without needing much force.

Rotate the pumpkin 180 degrees and cut down the opposite side the same way. Once you’ve made a cut deep enough, you can finish breaking it apart by hand.

The key is to visualize the lever principle or imagine using a paper cutter while working. If you get your hands on a whole pumpkin, definitely try this method!

先日、大阪市立美術館を訪れました。大規模改修工事が行われ今年の３月にリニューアルオープンしたのですが、あまりにもお久しぶりのため、変化が分からず…。それでもエントランスホールの広々とした空間は、これぞと美術館！といった趣があり気分を盛り上げてくれます。

 

 

 

 

今回は大阪万博のイタリア館の特別展が目的でしたが、そのチケットで館内の他の企画展示なども観ることができ、こちらの美術館がその質量をほこるアジアの仏教工芸、彫刻などの展示も拝見しました。写真撮影も可能とのことでしたが想像以上の展示物の数で、こんなに一度に中国の仏像を見たことがないので圧倒されてしまいました。

その中で、何とも不思議なポーズの小さな工芸品が目に留まりました。近づくと「青銅鍍金銀（せいどうときんぎん） 羽人（うじん）」中国後漢時代（１～２世紀）、と説明書きがあります。大阪市立美術館の新キャラクターのモデルとのこと。中国の不老不死の仙人で、羽人の像は似たものが世界で他に２点現存するのみだそうです。羽人という名前の通り、他の２体には羽があるそうですが、こちらの像には羽がないのが謎なのだとか。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

羽人は神様の世話をしたり、鳳凰に餌を与えたり、空を飛んで龍の車を先導するなどの役目があるそうですが、「六博（りくはく）」というボードゲームが好きで、隙あらば楽しんでいたというユニークな仙人だそうです。

シンプルな像に見えますが、青銅に金メッキが施された後に上から銀メッキが施されるという高度な技術で作られています。高さが１０ｃｍ程で、目が吊り上がり、耳先が長く上に突き出している不思議な容貌です。なんとこの姿勢のまま走れるのではという説もあるのだとか。私には跪いて「降参！」と言っているようにしか見えないのですが…。

 

この羽人のポーズは、六博のゲームで使う箸や算木が入っていた容器を抱えている姿だそうで、両ひざの穴は、ネジのようなもので容器を固定するための穴だと推測されています。

 

美術館の壁には巨大な羽人の履歴書が展示されており、この美術館のユーモアのセンスが光っております。（写りが悪くてすみません）

 

 

 

日頃のルーティンから頭を切り離しリフレッシュするには美術館巡りは効果的ですね。

The other day, I visited the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts. It underwent major renovations and reopened this past March, but it had been so long since my last visit that I didn’t really notice much change… Still, the spacious entrance hall has that quintessential museum feel, instantly lifting your spirits.

 

My main purpose this time was the special exhibition on the Italian Pavilion at the Osaka Expo. However, the ticket also allowed me to see other special exhibitions within the museum. I viewed the museum’s impressive collection of Asian Buddhist crafts and sculptures, which it takes great pride in. Photography was permitted, but the sheer number of exhibits exceeded my expectations. I’d never seen so many Chinese Buddhist statues at once and was completely overwhelmed.

Among them, a small statue in a most peculiar pose caught my eye. Approaching it, I found an inscription: “Gilded Bronze and Silver Winged Immortal (Wujin).” Late Han Dynasty, China (1st-2nd century). It is said to be the model for the Osaka City Museum of Art’s new character. A Chinese immortal symbolizing eternal youth and immortality, only two other similar Winged Immortal statues are known to exist worldwide. True to its name, the other two statues have wings, but the mystery lies in why this particular statue lacks them.

Wujin is said to have duties like tending to gods, feeding phoenixes, and flying through the sky to guide dragon-drawn chariots. Yet he was also a unique immortal who loved the board game “Liubo” and would play whenever he got the chance.

Though the statue appears simple, it was crafted using advanced techniques: first gilded bronze, then overlaid with silver plating. Standing about 10 cm tall, it has an unusual appearance with slanted eyes and long, protruding ears. Some theories even suggest it could run in this posture. To me, though, it just looks like it’s kneeling and saying, “I surrender!”…

This winged figure’s pose apparently depicts it holding a container that held chopsticks and counting sticks used in the game of Rokuhaku. The holes in both knees are thought to be for fastening the container with something like screws.

Visiting museums is an effective way to disconnect from daily routines and refresh your mind.

There was also a face-in panel of Atlas holding up the sky! No ticket needed for this one.
