本日は芸術の秋らしいイベントをひとつご紹介いたします。

2010年から3年ごとに開催する国際芸術祭「あいち2025」が、今年も2025年9月13日(土) ～ 11月30日(日) 開催されております。6回目を迎える今回は、フール・アル・カシミを芸術監督に迎え「灰と薔薇のあいまに」がテーマとなっています。

現代美術を基軸に、パフォーミングアーツ、ラーニング・プログラムなど、ジャンルを横断しながら多様なアートの表現を発信をするこの「あいち2025」は、国内外から様々なバックグラウンドを持ち活動する60組を超えるアーティストが参加しています。その展示・実施会場は、美術館や劇場、瀬戸市のまちなかなどなど。愛知の各所でその作品やプログラムに触れることができます。

日頃、骨董古美術品に触れることが多い生活をしているわけですが、その何が楽しいかといいますと、その御品の時代や作家やその技巧やバックボーンなどの想像の世界をくすぐられること。思えばそこは現代アートとはちょっと違っていて、作品と共にそれらすべてをすぐに知ることができ、もしかしたら直接アーティストさんの声も聞けたり、自分としては作品の思いがストレートに刺さってきます。また、作品の様々な情報が自分の中に入ったうえで作品を観ることは、普段とは真逆な感覚なわけでしてちょっと不思議な感覚にもなってきます。これって自分だけなんでしょうか笑。

そんな直球な作品たちに囲まれる国際芸術祭「あいち2025」、ちょっと日常に飽きたな…なんて思っている皆さまには、この秋いつものと違った感覚を味わいに各会場で身を投じてみるのもよいかもしれませんね。

Today we’d like to introduce an event perfect for autumn, the season of art.

The international art festival “Aichi 2025,” held every three years since 2010, is taking place again this year from Saturday, September 13 to Sunday, November 30, 2025. Now in its sixth iteration, this edition welcomes Fouad Al-Kasmi as Artistic Director, with the theme “Between Ashes and Roses.”

Centered on contemporary art, “Aichi 2025” presents diverse artistic expressions across genres, including performing arts and learning programs. Over 60 artists from Japan and abroad, each with varied backgrounds, are participating. Exhibitions and events take place at venues such as art museums, theaters, and downtown Seto City, allowing visitors to experience the works and programs throughout Aichi Prefecture.

In my daily life, I often encounter antique and vintage art objects. What I find enjoyable about them is imagining and speculating about the era, the artist, their techniques, and their background. Thinking about it, this is quite different from contemporary art, isn’t it? With contemporary art, you can learn all of that immediately alongside the work itself, and you might even hear the artist’s voice directly. For me, the entire work hits me straight on, always leaving me with a strange sensation.

Surrounded by such direct works at the international art festival “Aichi 2025”… If you’re feeling a bit bored with your daily routine, why not immerse yourself in the various venues this fall and experience a different sensation?

涼しくなり、ゆっくりと湯船に浸かりたくなる季節がやってきました。

秋の夜長、ゆっくりお風呂につかりたいときに欠かせないのが入浴剤。ポカポカのお湯に全身つかるため、体の芯まで温められるので大好きです。有効成分が含まれている薬用入浴剤を選べば、疲労回復、冷え症や肩のこり・腰痛などをやわらげる効果もありますし、ラベンダーやローズなどの様々な香りで、疲れた心も癒されますよね。

昭和世代の入浴剤と言えばバスクリンが代名詞でした。入浴剤全てをバスクリンと呼んでいたのは私だけではないと思います。

その「バスクリン」についてのちょっぴりさみしいニュースを目にしました。

入浴剤などを手がける株式会社バスクリン は、2025年12月31日で事業を終了し、2026年1月1日には現在の完全親会社であるアース製薬と合併するとのこと。「バスクリン」「きき湯」「日本の名湯」といった商品シリーズはアース製薬が引き継ぐとのことですが、昭和は遠くなりにけり…ですね。

初めて使った入浴剤はバスクリンでした。オレンジ色の粉をお湯に入れると緑色になるのが楽しくて、「みどりのパラパラしてー」とお願いして、兄妹でお風呂時間を楽しんだ思い出があります。時代は変わってもあの鮮やかに緑に変わる瞬間は今でも好きです。

今も昔も入浴剤が好きで、日本の名湯シリーズ「白濁する登別カルルス」などを使っては、行ったことないけど行ったつもりで楽しんでいました。

今は、きき湯を愛用中なのですが、自分の好みの量を調整できるので、何種類か並べておいていて、好きな香りを選んで使えるのが気に入っています。

そういえば、風呂キャンセル界隈という言葉をよく耳にするほど湯船に浸かる人が減っているようですが、お風呂が快適な空間になればその界隈も減るのでしょうか。湯船に浸かる習慣は、世界で言うと少数派のようですが、湯船に入って浸かった時の心地よさを感じないのはちょっと損な気がします。

また、ドリフのコントでは欠かせない存在でしたね、バスクリン。元々は大爆笑のワンコーナーだったバカ殿でも、志村けんさんのバカ殿と当時のアイドルが風呂に入っていたコントでバスクリンが入ってましたね。お風呂のコントは多かったですが、絶対バスクリンが入っていましたよね？確か全員集合でもバスクリンが入っていた気がします。

スポンサーの意向もあったんでしょうが、視聴時の画質を考慮して、色付きのお湯にしたほうがお風呂らしさが伝わって良いという判断だったのだとか。

130年余の歴史がある会社がなくなってしまうのは寂しく思いますが、「バスクリン」温まったし香りも楽しませていただきましたし、 そして充分笑わせていただきました。

The season has arrived when the air turns cool and you long to soak slowly in the bathtub.

On long autumn nights, bath salts are essential when you want to relax in the tub. I love them because immersing my whole body in the warm water heats me right to the core. Choosing medicated bath salts with active ingredients can also help relieve fatigue, cold sensitivity, stiff shoulders, and lower back pain. Plus, the various scents like lavender or rose soothe a weary mind.

For the Showa generation, bath salts were synonymous with Basclin. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who called all bath salts “Basclin.”

I recently came across some slightly sad news about that “Basclin.”

Basclin Co., Ltd., which handles bath additives and other products, will cease operations on December 31, 2025, and merge with its current parent company, Earth Pharmaceutical, on January 1, 2026. Earth Pharmaceutical will take over product series like “Basclin,” “Kikiyu,” and “Japan’s Famous Hot Springs.” Ah, the Showa era is fading into the distance…

The first bath salt I ever used was Basclin. I remember how much fun it was when the orange powder turned the water green. My siblings and I would ask for “green sprinkles!” and enjoy bath time together. Even though times have changed, I still love that vivid moment when it turns green.

I’ve always loved bath salts, and even now I enjoy using things like the Japanese Famous Hot Springs series’ “Milky White Noboribetsu Karurusu,” imagining I’m visiting places I’ve never been.

Currently, I’m a big fan of Kiki-yu. I like that I can adjust the amount to my preference, so I keep several types lined up and choose my favorite scent each time.

Speaking of which, I often hear the term “bath cancellation culture” these days, suggesting fewer people are soaking in bathtubs. But if baths became more comfortable spaces, would that culture diminish? Soaking in a tub seems a minority habit globally, but not experiencing that comfort feels like a bit of a loss.

Also, Basclin was an indispensable part of the Drifters’ comedy sketches, wasn’t it? Even in the “Baka-dono” segment, originally a big laugh corner, the sketch where Ken Shimura’s Baka-dono and an idol of the time were bathing had Basclin in it. There were many bath-themed sketches, but Basclin was absolutely always in them, right? I’m pretty sure it was in the “Zettai Zenkōshū” sketches too.

It was probably partly due to the sponsor’s wishes, but I heard the decision was made that colored water would better convey the bath atmosphere and look better on screen.

It’s sad to see a company with over 130 years of history disappear. But “Bathclin” warmed us up, let us enjoy its scent, and gave us plenty of laughs.

やっと冷房から解放され、夜は窓からの涼しい風にホッとしながら眠りにつくことができるようになりましたね…。

10月にはいりました。気が付くと早くも来年のカレンダーが店頭に並んでいたりと、夏の暑さが収まるのを待っている間に来年のことがちらついてきます。ここちよく活動できるシーズンは短くて、この時期を有効に使わねば…と、いろいろ焦っていることろであります。

さてさて、この秋巡りたい美術展はたくさんあるのですが、今期気になったのは名古屋市美術館で開催されている特別展「藤田嗣治　絵画と写真」。2025年9月27日(土)～12月7日(日)開催されているようです。

藤田嗣治（1886-1968）は、エコール・ド・パリの寵児として世界的に活躍した画家ですが、藤田氏は数多くの写真も残しているそうです。今回は「写真」を軸に藤田の絵画制作を再考し、絵画と写真が交差する創造の軌跡を追っていこうというという展覧会のようです。

ところで藤田嗣治といえば、あのオカッパ頭に丸眼鏡とちょび髭がトレードマーク。先日、偶然にもその藤田嗣治のトレードマークによせたおしゃれなお兄さんを見かけました。藤田嗣治によせてるな…なんて思ってしまったのですが、それにしてもあの3点セットはずるいですね笑。藤田嗣治のイメージを一旦おいておいたとしても、あのインパクトで完全に目を引きました。

なにかで読んだのですが、藤田嗣治のあのオカッパ頭に丸メガネ、口元の髭と奇抜なファッション、そして傍らには猫ちゃん…は、意図的か偶然にかはわかりませんが、みごとにセルフイメージを創りだしています。そんな強烈なフジタのイメージ戦略に誰もが知らず知らずのうちにハマっているともいえるそうです。

そんな絵画と写真に広がるの藤田嗣治の戦略の世界を覗きたくなってきましたので、この秋訪れてみようかな。

We’re finally free from air conditioning, and can drift off to sleep at night with the cool breeze coming in through the window… October has arrived. Before I knew it, next year’s calendars were already on store shelves, and as I wait for the summer heat to subside, thoughts of next year begin to wander. The season for comfortable activities is short, so I’m feeling anxious about making the most of this time… While there are many art exhibitions I’d like to visit this fall, one that caught my eye this season is the special exhibition “Tsuguharu Foujita: Paintings and Photography” at the Nagoya City Art Museum. It will be on display from Saturday, September 27, 2025 to Sunday, December 7, 2025.

Tsuguharu Foujita (1886-1968) was a beloved artist of the École de Paris who achieved worldwide success, but he also left behind a large number of photographs. This exhibition reconsiders Foujita’s painting practice through the lens of photography, tracing the creative path at the intersection of painting and photography. By the way, when you think of Foujita Tsuguharu, his trademarks are his bowl cut, round glasses, and small mustache. The other day, I happened to see a stylish man wearing a set that mimics Foujita’s trademarks. I couldn’t help but think, “This is a reference to Foujita…” but even so, that three-piece set is pretty clever, haha.

Even putting aside the image of Foujita for a moment, the impact of the set completely caught my eye. I read somewhere that Foujita’s bowl cut, round glasses, mustache, eccentric fashion, and cat by his side… whether intentional or accidental, create a wonderful self-image. It’s possible to say that everyone is unknowingly hooked on Foujita’s powerful image strategy.

I’m now curious to take a peek into the strategic world of Foujita Tsuguharu that unfolds in his paintings and photographs, so I think I’ll visit this fall.

名古屋は朝夕めっきり涼しくなり、エアコンや暖房器具なしで過ごせる貴重な季節となりました。ここ数日は窓を開けてカーテン越しに入ってくる風に癒されております。

もともと冷たい飲み物は得意ではないのですが、今夏の猛暑に耐えきれず、体を冷やすべく無理矢理アイスコーヒーなどをがぶ飲みしていたので胃腸が弱ってしまいました。涼しくなってくると、ゆっくり落ち着いて温かい飲み物を楽しめることに何より幸せを感じ、ぼーっとした頭をシャキッとさせようと毎朝コーヒーを淹れたカップに鼻を突っ込み、香りを目一杯吸い込んでおります。

本日１０月１日は「コーヒーの日」だそうで、１９８３年に全日本コーヒー協会により定められています。当時はホットコーヒーが主流だったため、朝晩が冷え込み始める１０月頃にコーヒーの消費量が増えたためとされています。そして２０１５年には国際コーヒー機関が１０月１日を「国際コーヒーの日」と定めたのだとか。コーヒー先進国ではない日本が３０年以上も早くこの日をコーヒーの日に制定していたのが興味深いところです。

子供の頃、テレビドラマの喫茶店シーンで大人が皆コーヒーを頼むので、他にも甘くて美味しいものがたくさんあるのに何故あんなに苦い飲み物をお金を払って飲むのだろうと不思議に思っていました。いつかあなたもコーヒーなしでは一日を過ごせなくなるよ、と当時の自分に耳打ちしたくなります。

さて多くの大人にとってエネルギーの源となるコーヒーの起源を探ってみると、８００年頃のエチオピアのカルディというヤギ使いの少年の伝説が出てきます。赤い実を食べたヤギが興奮して呼び跳ねるを見たカルディ少年が自分も食べてみると気分が爽快になり元気が出たとのこと。それを聞いた修道院の僧侶が眠らずに修業に励むためにその実を秘薬として使うようになったのだとか。伝説ですので真偽のほどは定かではありませんが、エチオピアから世界へと広まっていったのは確かなようです。

お気づきでしょうが、聴き馴染みのある「カルディ」という言葉。私もよく利用するコーヒーと輸入食品のお店の名前の由来にもなっています。確かに店の紙袋などの絵柄には赤い実を食べるヤギと傍らに少年の絵が描かれています。また「カルディ」という名前は世界中のコーヒー会社などで採り入れられているそうです。

知らない言葉に出会った時に「どういう意味？」と興味を持つと世界の見え方も少し変わるのでしょうね。海外で「カルディ」の文字を見て、「ああ、あのヤギ使いのカルディね」などとコーヒー通を装うこともできます。

先日モロッコのコーヒーを豆の状態でいただき、コーヒーミルを慌てて探しておりますが見つからず、もしかして使わないので処分した？という気すらしております。ひょっこり出てくるかもと新しいコーヒーミルを購入するのを躊躇しているため、無情にもコーヒー豆の良い香りだけが漂っております。さて飲めるのはいつになるのでしょうか。

Nagoya has become noticeably cooler in the mornings and evenings, ushering in a precious season when we can get by without air conditioning or heating appliances. These past few days, I’ve been soothed by the breeze coming in through the open window, filtering through the curtains.

I’m not naturally fond of cold drinks, but this summer’s intense heat was unbearable. I forced myself to guzzle iced coffee and other cold beverages to cool down, which ended up weakening my stomach. Now that it’s cooler, I find nothing more satisfying than slowly savoring a warm drink. To clear my foggy head each morning, I bury my nose in my freshly brewed cup of coffee and inhale its aroma deeply.

Apparently, today, October 1st, is “Coffee Day,” established by the All Japan Coffee Association in 1983. Back then, hot coffee was the mainstream, and consumption increased around October when mornings and evenings started to get chilly. Then, in 2015, the International Coffee Organization designated October 1st as “International Coffee Day.” It’s interesting that Japan, not exactly a coffee powerhouse, established this day over 30 years earlier.

As a child, watching TV dramas with scenes in coffee shops, I wondered why adults always ordered coffee. There were so many sweet, delicious things available—why would they pay money for such a bitter drink? I feel like whispering to my younger self: “Someday, you won’t be able to get through a day without coffee.”

Now, when researching the origins of coffee—that energy source for so many adults—the legend of Kaldi, a young goat herder in Ethiopia around 800 AD, emerges. Seeing his goats become excited and jump around after eating red berries, Kaldi tried them himself and felt refreshed and energized. Monks at a nearby monastery then began using the berries as a secret elixir to stay awake and devote themselves to their studies. While this is a legend and its veracity is uncertain, it seems clear that coffee spread from Ethiopia to the rest of the world.

You may have noticed the familiar-sounding word “Kaldi.” It’s also the origin of the name for a coffee and imported food shop I frequent. Indeed, the designs on the shop’s paper bags feature a goat eating red berries with a boy beside it. Moreover, the name “Kaldi” is reportedly adopted by coffee companies worldwide.

When encountering an unfamiliar word and wondering “What does it mean?”, your perspective on the world shifts slightly. Seeing ‘Kaldi’ written abroad, you could even pretend to be a coffee connoisseur, thinking “Ah, that Kaldi, the goat herder.”

The other day, I received some Bacha coffee beans from Morocco and am now frantically searching for my coffee grinder. I can’t find it, and I’m even starting to wonder if I disposed of it because I never used it? I’m hesitating to buy a new grinder, thinking it might just turn up, so for now, only the wonderful aroma of the coffee beans lingers. I wonder when I’ll finally get to drink it.
