毎回ブログテーマをひねり出すのに頭を悩ませているのですが、そんな私に朗報です（笑）今日は偶然『珊瑚の日』らしいので、今日は珊瑚についてちょっと書いてみようと思います。

 

 

 

本日3月5日は「珊瑚の日」。「3（さん）5（ご）」の語呂合わせと、3月の誕生石が珊瑚の宝石”コーラル”として知られていることから制定されました。また、サンゴ保護を呼びかける日でもあります。

 

海の中で長い時間をかけて育つサンゴは「海の宝石」とも呼ばれ、昔から装飾品として親しまれてきました。日本でも赤珊瑚や桃色珊瑚は人気があり、簪（かんざし）、帯留め、根付や彫刻、数珠や装身具などに用いられ、江戸〜明治期の赤珊瑚の装飾品は今でも骨董品として人気があります。

 

日本で有名な珊瑚の産地は高知県沖、いわゆる土佐沖の海域です。この海で採れる赤珊瑚は特に美しく、「血赤珊瑚」と呼ばれる深い赤色のものは、世界でも最高級とされ、宝石の世界では「海のルビー」とも呼ばれます。

江戸時代から、日本の高級珊瑚の多くは、土佐沖で採られていましたが、19世紀、漁師の西村勝三がこの海域で赤珊瑚の大群を発見したことから、日本の珊瑚産業は一気に発展することになります。

ただし、江戸時代の珊瑚漁はまさに命がけの漁。深さ100〜300メートルの海底に重い鉄の道具を沈め、手作業で引き上げるというやり方で、船が転覆する事故も珍しくなかったそうです。それでも血赤珊瑚は「海のルビー」と呼ばれるほど高価だったので、多くの漁師が挑戦しました。

 

その後、明治時代には日本珊瑚はヨーロッパで大ブームとなり、大量に輸出されました。特に人気だったのがイタリアのナポリ周辺の宝飾職人で、日本の赤珊瑚でカメオやロザリオ、ネックレスを作り、ヨーロッパ中で販売しました。

 

それから、1970〜80年代、日本では宝石ブームが起こります。高知県の血赤珊瑚も大きな注目を集め、中国や台湾のコレクターたちが購入するようになり、価格は急騰しました。

小さな帯留めでも数万円から数十万円に、大玉なら数百万円になることもあったようで、「小さな珊瑚が家一軒になる」と言われることもあった…なんて話もあるようですので、なんだか夢がありますね。

 

 

こんな話をしていると、ちょうど季節も暖かくなったし、お家の中を整理してみようかな…なんて気になりませんか？もしかすると、皆さまのお家のどこかにひっそり眠っている珊瑚が見つけられるかもしれません。

昔の簪や帯留め、念珠が箪笥の奥で「ここにいるよ！」と待っているかも？と思えば、面倒なお片付けも少しは楽しくなったりは…しないでしょうか。

I always struggle to come up with blog topics, but here’s some good news for me? Today happens to be Coral Day, so I thought I’d write a little about coral.

Today, March 5th, is “Coral Day.” It was established based on the pun “3 (san) 5 (go)” and because coral is known as the gemstone “coral” for March. It’s also a day to call for coral conservation.

Coral, which grows slowly over long periods in the sea, is also called the “jewel of the sea” and has been cherished as jewelry since ancient times. In Japan, red coral and pink coral are popular, used for hairpins (kanzashi), obi sashes, netsuke, carvings, prayer beads, and ornaments. Red coral jewelry from the Edo to Meiji periods remains popular as antiques even today.

The most famous coral production area in Japan is off the coast of Kōchi Prefecture, known as the Tosa Offshore waters. The red coral harvested here is particularly beautiful. The deep red variety, called “blood red coral,” is considered the highest grade in the world and is also known as the “ruby of the sea” in the gemstone world.

From the Edo period onward, much of Japan’s high-quality coral was harvested off Tosa. However, in the 19th century, the discovery of a large colony of red coral in these waters by fisherman Katsuzo Nishimura led to the rapid development of Japan’s coral industry.

However, coral fishing in the Edo period was truly a life-threatening endeavor. Heavy iron tools were sunk to depths of 100 to 300 meters, then hauled up by hand. Accidents where boats capsized were not uncommon. Even so, blood-red coral was so valuable it earned the name “ruby of the sea,” prompting many fishermen to take the risk.

Later, during the Meiji era, Japanese coral became a huge craze in Europe and was exported in massive quantities. Particularly popular were the jewelers around Naples, Italy, who crafted cameos, rosaries, and necklaces from Japanese red coral and sold them throughout Europe.

Then, in the 1970s and 80s, a gemstone boom occurred in Japan. Blood-red coral from Kochi Prefecture gained significant attention, attracting buyers from China and Taiwan, causing prices to skyrocket.

Even small obi-dome (sash clips) could fetch tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of yen, while larger pieces sometimes reached millions. There’s even a saying that “a small piece of coral could buy you a house”… which sounds rather dreamy, doesn’t it?

Talking about this, now that the weather’s warming up, I find myself thinking… maybe I should tidy up my home. Who knows? You might discover some coral quietly resting somewhere in your house. Old hairpins, obi-dome, or prayer beads might be waiting in the back of a chest of drawers, calling out, “I’m here!”
