朝から寒いですね。

全国的に、これから週末にかけて日本列島上空に強い寒気が居座る予想でして、日本海側の広い範囲で雪が降り続くようですね。大雪による道路の大規模な立ち往生などに十分な注意が必要のようですが、寒気が強まるタイミングで太平洋側でも雪の降るところがある見込みのようですので、今から既にびびっているスタッフYの今朝であります。

ところで、寒い時にみなさまはどんな暖をとっていますか？

連続テレビ小説では、島根の寒さに耐えかねたヘブン先生が、リヨさんからいただいた湯たんぽに「アタタカイ！　アア！　スバラシ！」なんて感激したシーンがあったりしましたが、寒さに耐えられないヘブン先生がちょっとキレ気味なのがとても印象的でした。寒さって、確かに気持ちまでもってかれますよね。

いただいた湯たんぽが瀬戸物のかまぼこ型だったのが面白かったのですが、湯たんぽの歴史が意外と古いことを知ってて少々驚きました。始まりは中国の唐の時代のようでして日本には室町時代に伝来。当初は陶器製が主流でしたが、江戸時代には銅製、大正・昭和期にはブリキ製が普及し、現代ではプラスチック製やPVC製が主流となり、電子レンジで加熱できるタイプも登場。電気暖房の普及で一度は減少しますが、エコや防災意識の高まりで再び注目され、多様な素材とデザインで現在も愛用されています。

ちょっと調べてみたのですが、時代物の湯たんぽその形も素材も様々なのでデザインも面白おかしく様々なものが多くありました。素材デザイン問わずお湯の注ぎ口があって、足触りのよい温かくなるものでしたらもうそれは湯たんぽなんだな…笑。

唐の時代の見ず知らずの人、ヘブン先生などなどどの時代も湯たんぽを使っていたであろう方がその温かさに安心して「アタタカイ！　アア！　スバラシ！」なんて言葉がどれにも浮かんでくるようなのは私だけでしょうか。しかもその丸っこいフォルムも相まってどうしてもフフッと笑ってしまうので、そこはどうかお許し願いたいものです。

そして、時代とともに素材や形を変えながらも、その温もりと利便性から現代でも多くの人に愛用され続けている知恵の道具湯たんぽ、これからも少しづつではありますが進化し続けてほしいとも願っております。

It’s cold since morning, isn’t it?

Nationwide, a strong cold front is expected to linger over the Japanese archipelago through the weekend, with snow continuing to fall across a wide area on the Sea of Japan side. While we need to be very careful about large-scale traffic jams on roads due to heavy snow, it seems snow is also expected to fall on the Pacific side when the cold front intensifies. So, I’m already freaking out this morning.

By the way, how do you all keep warm when it’s cold?

In the morning TV drama, there was a scene where Mr. Heaven, unable to endure the cold in Shimane, was thrilled by the hot water bottle he received from Riyo-san, exclaiming, “So warm! Ahh! Wonderful!” It was quite memorable seeing Mr. Heaven, who couldn’t stand the cold, getting a bit irritable. The cold really does get to you, doesn’t it?

I thought it was funny that the hot water bottle I received was a ceramic fish cake-shaped one, but I was a bit surprised to learn the history of hot water bottles is surprisingly old. It seems they originated in China during the Tang Dynasty and were introduced to Japan during the Muromachi period. Initially, ceramic ones were mainstream, but copper ones became popular in the Edo period, and tinplate ones in the Taisho and Showa periods. Nowadays, plastic and PVC ones are mainstream, and types you can heat in the microwave have also appeared. Though their use declined with the spread of electric heating, they’ve regained popularity due to growing eco-consciousness and disaster preparedness. They’re still beloved today in diverse materials and designs.

I did a little research and found that vintage hot water bottles come in all sorts of shapes and materials, with many designs being quite whimsical and varied. Regardless of material or design, if it has a spout for pouring hot water and provides that pleasant warmth against your skin, well, that’s a hot water bottle… lol.

With every hot water bottle, I can’t help but imagine someone from the Tang Dynasty—a stranger, or perhaps even Heaven-sensei—feeling its warmth and exclaiming, “So warm! Ahh! Wonderful!” Their words seem to float up from each one. Combined with their round forms, it’s just too funny not to laugh, but please forgive me for that laugh.

Though materials and shapes have changed with the times, the hot water bottle remains a tool of wisdom, cherished by many today for its warmth and convenience. I hope it continues to evolve, bit by bit, for years to come.

先日買取に伺ったお宅でもあったお話ですが、自宅の蔵や押入れなどから骨董品を発見したものの、「付属の箱が見当たらない」ということはありませんか？

一般的に茶道具や掛軸、陶磁器、書画などの骨董品は木でできた「共箱（ともばこ）」と呼ばれる箱に入っていることがほとんどです。そして、ご推察の通り付属の箱がないと価値が下がってしまうこともあります。ですが、箱がない場合でも買取可能な場合がほとんどです。

ということで、本日の「相続と骨董品買取のお話」では、共箱が持つ役割などについてのお話を。

「共箱」とは、美術品や工芸品などが納められている専用の箱で、作品とセットで扱われるものです。
単なる収納箱ではなく、作品そのものの価値を大きく左右する重要な要素となります。
特に、茶道具、掛け軸、陶磁器、刀剣、書画などでは、共箱の有無が買取価格に大きな影響を与えます。

骨董品の共箱には次のような役割があり、それが査定に影響することもあります。

①箱書が価値の裏付けになる

②箱書が中身の情報特定に役立つ

③箱自体に価値がある場合もある

骨董品が収納されている共箱には「箱書（はこがき）」と呼ばれる文字が記されていることが多いです。

箱書には作者の署名や印鑑が押印されており、作品名や制作年代などが記されています。これは、いわば作品を証明する「保証書」のような役割を持ちます。もちろん中身がすり替えられていたり、箱書も偽物であったりする可能性もあるため、鑑定は必要です。しかし本物である場合、箱なしよりも箱ありの方が価値が上がります。

また、箱書が施された骨董品の共箱は、それ自体にも価値があります。有名な作品・作者であればあるほど価値がプラスされるかもしれません。ただし、そもそも共箱が作られていない骨董品も多く存在します。さまざまな理由から、作者が準備していない場合があるからです。ですが、箱なしだからといって、作品の価値がなくなったり、価値を証明できないわけではないので、ご安心ください。

ひと口に「共箱」と言っても、いくつかの種類があります。

最も価値が高いのは、作者本人が制作した箱書き（箱に書き込まれた情報）のある「共箱」です。

ほかに、作者本人ではないものの、権威ある鑑定家や団体や弟子などが箱書きをした「識箱（しきばこ）」や、家元や宗匠など権威ある人物が箱書を記した「書付箱（かけつけばこ）」があります。

これらとは別に、「合箱（あわせばこ）」と呼ばれるものがあります。
これは、作品とは無関係の箱で、後から保管のために付けられたものです。
合箱は作品の価値を直接証明するものではありませんが、時代相応の材質や造りの良い、質の高い合箱であれば、買取価格に多少プラスの影響を与えるかもしれません。
例えば、明治時代の漆器の箱など、それ自体にアンティークとしての価値があるものもあります。

ご祖父母やご両親から譲られた古びた木箱。普段何気なく見ているその箱、実は「共箱」と呼ばれる、骨董品の世界では非常に重要な存在でした。その箱自体にも、もしかしたら意外な価値が隠されているかもしれません。

作品が本物であることを保証し、どんな作品なのか探すヒントになり、さらに箱ありの方が希少価値も上がります。査定を依頼する際、箱がある場合は必ず一緒にお持ちくださいね。

もし、作品と関係のない「合箱（あわせばこ）」などの場合でも査定に影響しません。また、箱がもともとない作品や、箱がなくてもきちんと価値がある場合もあります。ご自宅に眠る箱なしの骨董品、まずは査定を依頼してみてはいかがでしょうか。

The other day, I visited a home to appraise items, and it reminded me of something: Have you ever found antiques in your home’s storage or closets, only to realize the original box is missing?

Generally, antiques like tea ceremony utensils, hanging scrolls, ceramics, and calligraphy/paintings are almost always housed in wooden boxes called “tomo-bako” (accompanying boxes). And as you might guess, the absence of the original box can sometimes lower the value. However, even without the box, we can usually still purchase the item.

So, in today’s “Inheritance and Antique Appraisal Talk,” let’s discuss the role of the accompanying box.

A “tomo-bako” is a specialized box designed to house art or craft items, treated as an integral part of the work itself.
It’s not merely a storage container; it’s a crucial element that significantly influences the work’s overall value.
Particularly for tea ceremony utensils, hanging scrolls, ceramics, swords, calligraphy, and paintings, the presence or absence of a tomo-bako greatly impacts the purchase price.

Antique storage boxes serve the following roles, which can also affect appraisal:

① The box inscription (hakogaki) serves as proof of value
② The box inscription helps identify the contents
③ The box itself may sometimes hold value

Antique storage boxes often feature writing called a “box inscription” (hakogaki).

These box inscriptions feature the creator’s signature or seal, along with details like the work’s name and creation date. They essentially serve as a “certificate of authenticity” for the piece. Of course, since there’s always the possibility the contents were swapped or the box inscription is fake, authentication is necessary. However, if genuine, an item with its original box holds greater value than one without.

Furthermore, the storage box itself, bearing the box inscription, holds value. The more famous the work or artist, the greater the added value may be. However, many antiques simply do not come with a storage box. This is because, for various reasons, the artist may not have prepared one. But rest assured, the absence of a box does not mean the work loses its value or that its authenticity cannot be proven.

While we generally refer to it as a “storage box,” there are several types.

The most valuable is the “original box” bearing the box inscription (information written directly on the box) by the artist themselves.

Other types include the “attested box” (shikibako), inscribed by an authoritative appraiser, organization, or disciple, though not the artist themselves, and the “inscribed box” (kaketsukebako), inscribed by an authoritative figure like a headmaster or master.

Separate from these is the “assigned box” (awase-bako).
This is a box unrelated to the work itself, added later for storage purposes.
While an assigned box does not directly prove the work’s value, a high-quality one made of period-appropriate materials and well-crafted may slightly increase the purchase price.
For example, boxes for Meiji-period lacquerware sometimes hold antique value in their own right.

That old wooden box passed down from your grandparents or parents? That box you casually glance at every day might actually be a “kyōbako”—a box of immense importance in the world of antiques. The box itself could potentially hold unexpected value.

The box guarantees the work’s authenticity, provides clues about the piece itself, and further increases its rarity value. When requesting an appraisal, always bring the box along if you have it.

Even if the box is unrelated to the piece, such as a “matching box,” it won’t affect the appraisal. Also, some pieces never came with a box, and others retain significant value even without one. Why not request an appraisal for your boxless antiques?

昨日今日とスッキリと晴れ渡りました。大学入学共通テストを受験される受験生の皆さまもご家族も、お天気が良いだけで少し気持ちも軽くなるのではないでしょうか。

さてさて、もはや解けはしないのに、毎年気になってしまうのが、その試験内容。ムーミンやブラタモリなど、毎年共通テストの試験内容が話題になりますが、なんと今年は私も愛読しておりました、ベルばら！

「歴史総合、世界史探究」で、フランス革命を描いた漫画「ベルサイユのばら」（ベルばら）が引用されたというではありませんか！

過去にも有名な漫画・アニメ作品としては、「妖怪ウォッチ」「ゲゲゲの鬼太郎」などが引用されたことがあるようですが、センター試験の頃から、定期的にこの手のメディアを使った問題が出されていた印象があります。思うに、出題者が親と同じ年代とか、それ以上とかだからなんでしょうか…。

1972年から「週刊マーガレット」に連載された、池田理代子先生の「ベルサイユのばら」は、革命前後のフランスを舞台に王族や貴族、従者らの愛を描いた物語で、アニメ化、宝塚歌劇団で舞台化もされた人気漫画であります。

その「ベルばら」が登場したのは、フランス革命に関する問題。貴族の娘に生まれながらも将軍の父に男性として育てられたオスカルが「普通の女性として育っていたら、15歳のころには嫁がされていたのか」などと父に問いただす場面が引用され、フランス革命で市民の側についたオスカルが「バスティーユへ!!」と民衆を率いて出撃する名場面も掲載されたのだそう。

受験生の方々も悲喜こもごもで、ベルばらが好きな方にとってはサービス問題とも言えなくもないですが、この作品を見たとて、フィクションの部分もあって、回答に有利になる事はないと思うのですが、頭の中で絵を想像できるのは、記憶に残りやすいのかなと思います。

以前テレビで、東大生が影響受けた漫画ランキングで、「キングダムを読んだおかげて世界史の中国の戦国の七雄(秦・楚・斉・燕・趙・魏・韓)を苦も無く言えるようになった」と言っているのを見ましたが、私もその昔、横山光輝先生の三国志や戦国時代の漫画を読んだおかげて歴史の授業が楽しかった記憶があります。

小説でも影響を受けますが、やはり漫画の方が頭にスッと入ってくる気がするので影響力は大きいと思います。歴史は単に出来事を暗記するのではなく、時間の流れを追って眺めると、わりとすんなり頭に入るのです。この事件はなぜ起こったか、その結果どうなったか、どの人物がどう関係したか、それらを知ることで、歴史を知る楽しさに気づくきっかけになったなとも思うのです。

「漫画ばかり読んで、勉強しなさい！」と言われて過ごしたあの頃…。まさかこんな日が来るとは！

The skies have been clear and bright these past two days. For all the students taking the National Center Test for University Admissions and their families, the fine weather alone must be lifting your spirits a little.

Now then, even though I can’t solve them anymore, I still find myself curious about the test content every year. Things like Moomin and Bura Torimori become topics of discussion regarding the test content annually, but this year, it was none other than The Rose of Versailles—a manga I myself loved reading!

In the “History Comprehensive, World History Exploration” section, the manga “The Rose of Versailles” (Berubara), which depicts the French Revolution, was referenced!

In the past, famous manga and anime like “Yokai Watch” and “GeGeGe no Kitaro” have been referenced too. I get the impression that since the days of the old Center Test, questions using this kind of media have appeared periodically. I wonder if it’s because the test creators are the same age as the parents, or even older…

Serialized in Weekly Margaret from 1972, Riyoko Ikeda’s “The Rose of Versailles” is a popular manga depicting the love lives of royalty, nobles, and their attendants against the backdrop of pre- and post-revolutionary France. It was adapted into an anime and staged by the Takarazuka Revue.

This “Rose of Versailles” appeared in a question about the French Revolution. A scene where Oscar, born to an aristocratic family but raised as a man by her general father, confronts him asking, “If I had been raised as a normal woman, would I have been married off by the age of 15?” was quoted. It also featured the famous scene where Oscar, siding with the citizens during the French Revolution, leads the people shouting, “To the Bastille!!”

For exam takers, it was a mix of joy and sorrow. While fans of “The Rose of Versailles” might see it as a bonus question, I doubt reading the manga—which contains fictional elements—would actually help with the answers. Still, being able to visualize the scenes might make them stick in your memory better.

I once saw on TV a ranking of manga that influenced Tokyo University students, where someone said, “Thanks to reading Kingdom, I can easily name the Seven Warring States of China in world history (Qin, Chu, Qi, Yan, Zhao, Wei, Han).” I also remember enjoying history class back in the day because I read Mitsuteru Yokoyama’s manga adaptations of the Three Kingdoms and the Warring States period.

Novels influence me too, but manga just seems to sink in more easily, so I think its impact is greater. History isn’t just about memorizing events; when you follow the flow of time and look at the bigger picture, it actually sticks in your mind quite smoothly. Understanding why an event happened, what the outcome was, and how specific figures were involved—learning these things made me realize the joy of discovering history.

Back then, I was always told, “Stop reading manga and study!”… Who would’ve thought this day would come!

It’s never too late, even after exams. I really, really, really want you to read them.

今日から数日は暖かい陽気のようですが、また来週から寒波が来るそうですね。これだけ気温差があると、少々身体に堪えます。皆さまもどうぞご自愛くださいね。

店内では、先日買取に伺った際にお譲りいただいた招き猫が日向ぼっこよろしくお出迎えしておりますよ。

とても寒い日がつづくと、食べたくなるものがあります。

甘くて温かい「大判焼き」がなぜか食べたくなるのですが、この小麦粉からなる生地に餡がぎっしりと詰まった「大判焼き」。地域ごとにいろいろな呼び方がありますよね。

私は子供の頃から「東海道」だったのですが、これがこの地域でしか通用しないと気づいたのは大人になってから。

名古屋ではみんな「東海道」と呼ぶのだと思っていたのですが、なんと「東海道」とはローカルチェーンスーパー「ヤマナカ」オリジナルの名前でした。愛知県の呼び名でもなんでもなかったという事実…。

スーパー「ヤマナカ」の公式サイトによると、「東海道」と名付けたのは、ヤマナカの創業者の中野冨七。

昭和32 年、兵庫県姫路市で人気の大判焼店に焼き方の指導を受け、北海道産の大納言あずきを使用し、人工甘味料を一切使わず、当時の値段 1 個 10 円で販売を始めたのだそう。
東海道の人気は抜群で、店頭には長い列ができ、評判を聞き遠くからわざわざ 買 いに来られるお客 様までいらっしゃったそうですが、評判になっても餡の分量を少なくしたり、値段を高くすることはせず、販売を続けてきたのだそう。また、ひとつひとつに押される「東海道」の名の焼印は、「ヤマナカ」の商品であることを示し、責任の所在を明確にされているのだそうです。

どうやら関西の方にはおなじみのあの「御座候」に弟子入りし免許皆伝して作られたということのようですね。

「大判焼き」とはそもそも主に小麦粉からなる生地に餡をたっぷり入れ、金属製焼き型で焼成した和菓子のことですが、その呼び名は、なんと30通り以上という噂も…。

今川焼、御座候、回転焼き、太鼓まんじゅう、たくさんの言い方があるのですが、みなさまの地域では、なんと呼ばれているでしょうか。しかし、名称は違えど、みんなが指しているものは同じ。お祭りの屋台でも目にすることも多く、焼き立ての香りと中から溢れ出すあたたかい餡やクリームはたまりませんよね。

しかし、寒くなるとなぜか無性に食べたくなります。今も書いていて、頭の中、大判焼きでいっぱいです…。

いろいろ調べていると各地で論争の火種となる、名前を聞いてはいけない食べ物…。他に何があるか気になってきました。また次回お伝えしたいと思います。

The weather seems warm for the next few days, but I hear another cold snap is coming next week. Such drastic temperature swings can really take a toll on the body. Please take good care of yourselves.

Inside the shop, the maneki-neko (lucky cat) we acquired during a recent purchase visit is welcoming customers, basking in the sun.

When bitterly cold days persist, certain foods start craving.

For some reason, I find myself craving sweet, warm “ōban-yaki.” This pastry, made from wheat flour dough packed tightly with sweet bean paste, goes by different names in various regions.

I grew up calling it “Tokaido,” but only realized as an adult that this name only works in this area.

I thought everyone in Nagoya called it “Tokaido,” but it turns out ‘Tokaido’ is actually the original name of the local chain supermarket “Yamanaka.” The fact that it wasn’t even the name used in Aichi Prefecture…

According to the official Yamana Supermarket website, the name “Tokaido” was given by Yamana’s founder, Tomishichi Nakano.

In 1957, he learned baking techniques from a popular o-hanayaki shop in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture. Using Hokkaido-grown Dainagon red beans and no artificial sweeteners whatsoever, he began selling them for 10 yen each.
Tokaido’s popularity was phenomenal. Long lines formed outside the shop, and customers even came from far away specifically to buy them after hearing the buzz. Yet, even as it gained fame, they never reduced the amount of filling or raised the price, continuing to sell it as before. Furthermore, the “Tokaido” brand name stamped on each one signifies it as a Yamanaka product, clearly indicating responsibility.

It seems he apprenticed under the master of the famous “Goza-sho” from the Kansai region, mastering the craft before creating his own version.

“Oban-yaki” is essentially a Japanese sweet made by filling a dough primarily composed of wheat flour with generous amounts of sweet bean paste and baking it in a metal mold. Rumor has it there are over 30 different names for this treat…

Imagawayaki, Gozasou, Kaiten-yaki, Taiko-manju—there are many names. What do you call it in your area? But regardless of the name, everyone is talking about the same thing. You often see them at festival stalls, and the aroma of the freshly baked pastry combined with the warm, overflowing sweet bean paste or cream inside is irresistible, right?

But for some reason, when it gets cold, I crave them intensely. Even now, as I write this, my mind is filled with thoughts of o-hanayaki…

As I researched further, I discovered foods whose names are controversial hot topics in various regions… I’m curious what else might be out there. I’ll share more about that next time.

昨年も、ここ名古屋で開催されましたガウディ展訪れたのですが、今回開催のガウディ展は、ガウディ没後100年となる今年2026年、そしてサグラダ・ファミリアのメインタワー「イエスの塔」完成を記念し、公式展覧会として東京を皮切りに開催されるようです。

今回のガウディ展はガウディの手記や直筆の書簡、彼が使用した制作道具をはじめ、未公開の資料や模型、スケッチなど、学術的にも極めて貴重なコレクションを網羅的に展示しており、これほど多くの財団所蔵資料が同時公開されるのは世界初のようであります。また、展示のほかにも大人から子どもまで楽しめる参加型アートも体験できるようでして、これらを通してガウディ建築の魅力にも触れられるようになっているそうです。

さて、そのサグラダ・ファミリア聖堂ですが、2025年に聖母被昇天の礼拝堂が完成し、ガウディの没後100年にあたる今年2026年は、高さ172.5mあるメインタワー「イエス・キリストの塔」が完成します。その後、3つのファサードのうち最後となる「栄光のファサード」などの建設にとりかかり、全体が完成するのは10年後の2034年ごろと見込まれています。

それにしてもなぜそんなに建設に時間がかかるのか不思議に思うところですが、そもそもサグラダ・ファミリアの全貌は設計者であるガウディの頭の中にしかなかったとも言われており、頼りにできるのはたった1枚のスケッチのみ。ガウディ亡き後弟子たちがこしらえた数々の資料もスペイン内戦で焼失してしまうというアクシデントに見舞われ、常に手探り状態で建設を進めていくしかなかったようですね。

このところ重要な役割を担う日本人建築家（彫刻家）外尾悦郎氏の活躍などがTVなどでこのところ取り上げられていますが、確かにひとつひとつの彫刻の作成など手探りですすめている様子などをみますと、完成にかける情熱と執念もガウディの時代から現在に一緒に受け継がれているひとつのような気もしました。

少し長く生きてきた昭和世代ですと、完成には実に300年以上を要するともきいていて、自分たちが生きている間にサグラダ・ファミリアの完成を見ることはないのだろうなぁと、思っていたと思うんですね笑。なにせ建設が進まないことにより、着工からすでに長い年月が経過しているため、新しい部分を作ると同時に完成部分の補修もしなければならない始末ですので、完成なんてそんなそんな笑、なんて。

一体どうしてそんなに早く完成を見込めるようになったのか。その理由には大きく二つあるようです。

一つ目はさきほどサグラダ・ファミリアの工事がなかなか進まない理由としても挙げた建設方針の手探り状態が、近年のIT技術を駆使することでだいぶクリアになったこと。コンピュータのない時代には模造実験のための模型も手作業で作らなくてはなりませんでしたが、今は3Dプリンターやコンピュータによる設計技術も進んでいるため、進捗はかなりスムーズになってきました。

二つ目は、サグラダ・ファミリアを建設する予算が観光客増加によって潤沢になってきたことでしょうか。というのも、サグラダ・ファミリアを語る上で欠かせないポイントが建設費です。サグラダ・ファミリアは贖罪教会という特性から、その建設予算は人々の寄附によってまかなわれてきました。かつては工事費の不足により建設が遅れてしまっていた側面も大きかったようです。

それにしても生きている間にサグラダ・ファミリアの完成を目にすることなんて、昭和世代の自分には、実は突然すぎてピンとこないところでして。今現在のところはちょっと驚きの「えっ？」しか言葉はでないのすが、いよいよ完成した全貌をみることになると、自分の生きてきた時の流れと時代の流れとかいろんなものがどーっと押し寄せてきて、きっと感嘆の「えー－－－っ」の大きな声となると思います。

ということで、2026年いよいよあらわれる「イエス・キリストの塔」、きっとどこかでみているガウディと一緒にみんなでカウントダウンといきましましょうか。

I received images from an acquaintance who visited the “Official Centennial Commemoration of Gaudí’s Death: NAKED meets Gaudí Exhibition.”

This is said to be something Gaudí drew.

I also visited the Gaudi exhibition held here in Nagoya last year. This current Gaudi exhibition, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Gaudi’s death in 2026 and the completion of the Sagrada Familia’s main tower, the “Tower of Jesus,” appears to be an official exhibition starting in Tokyo.

This exhibition comprehensively displays an academically invaluable collection, including Gaudí’s notebooks, handwritten letters, his actual tools, previously unseen materials, models, and sketches. It appears to be the first time in the world that so many foundation-held materials are being exhibited simultaneously. Additionally, beyond the displays, there are participatory art experiences enjoyable for both adults and children, allowing visitors to engage with the charm of Gaudí’s architecture.

Now, regarding the Sagrada Família Cathedral itself: the Chapel of the Assumption is scheduled for completion in 2025. This year, 2026, marking the 100th anniversary of Gaudí’s death, will see the completion of the main tower, the “Tower of Jesus Christ,” standing 172.5 meters tall. After that, construction will begin on the final of the three façades, the “Façade of Glory,” with the entire structure expected to be completed around 2034, ten years later.

It’s puzzling why construction takes so long. It’s said that the entire vision of the Sagrada Família existed only in the mind of its designer, Gaudí, with just a single sketch to rely on. After Gaudí’s death, the numerous documents compiled by his disciples were tragically lost in the Spanish Civil War. Consequently, construction has always proceeded by trial and error.

Recently, the work of Japanese architect (and sculptor) Etsuro Tono, who plays a crucial role, has been featured on TV. Seeing how they proceed step by step, even with each individual sculpture, I felt that the passion and determination to complete it seem to be something passed down from Gaudí’s time to the present.

For us Showa-era folks who’ve lived a bit longer, we’d heard completion might take over 300 years. I think we all figured we wouldn’t live to see the Sagrada Familia finished, haha.

After all, construction progress has been slow. So much time has passed since groundbreaking that they have to repair completed sections while building new ones. Finishing? Yeah, right, haha.

So imagine the public uproar when it was announced that completion is now scheduled for around 150 years after groundbreaking—half the originally estimated timeframe! Furthermore, the video showing the projected completed design, announced for a 2026 completion, far exceeded our imagination, sparking a second wave of astonishment worldwide.

So how did they suddenly become so confident about finishing early?
There seem to be two major reasons.

First, the trial-and-error phase in construction methods—previously cited as a reason for the slow progress—has been largely overcome through the use of modern IT technology. In the pre-computer era, models for simulation experiments had to be crafted by hand. Now, with advances in 3D printing and computer-aided design, progress has become considerably smoother.

The second reason is likely the increased budget for Sagrada Família construction, fueled by rising tourist numbers. This is crucial because construction costs are central to the Sagrada Família narrative. Due to its nature as an expiatory church, its construction budget has always relied on public donations. In the past, insufficient funds were a major factor in delays.

Even so, witnessing the completion of the Sagrada Família within my lifetime feels so sudden and surreal to someone of my generation, born in the Showa era. Right now, I can only utter a surprised “Huh?” But when I finally see the completed structure in all its glory, I imagine the flow of my own life and the passage of time will wash over me all at once, surely eliciting a loud, amazed “Wooooow!”

So, let’s count down together with Gaudí, who’s surely watching from somewhere, to the “Tower of Jesus Christ” finally appearing in 2026.
