車の運転は出来る気がしないので免許は取りたくないと言っていた家族が、いよいよ自動車教習所に通う決意をしました。

今は送迎バスでの送り迎えがある教習所が多いそうですが、思い起こすと私は真夏に自転車で通っておりました。自転車が辛すぎて一刻も早く免許を取得したいというモチベーションにはなったので、それはそれで良しとしておきます。

 

昔は高速道路を実際に走る講習はなかったという声もありますが、私はなぜか受けておりました。微かではありますが、記憶がよみがえってまいりました。高速道路に合流するところで初めて命の危険を感じました。隣に座っている指導員はよく平然と乗っていられるなと思っておりましたが、きっと大変怖い思いをされていたことでしょう。短い距離ではありましたが車の本当の速さを実感し身が引き締まりました。と同時に高速を走り続ければ知らない土地に行くことができるというワクワク感もありました。

現在では仮免許取得後に高速道路講習が行われることが多く、教習所によっては運転シュミレーターで練習が行われるそうです。

他にも実際の道路での「駐停車教習」や実際の道路での指導員の運転を観察する「観察学習」、教習生同士で互いの運転や危険予測について討論する「ディスカッション教習」など私の時代には無かったプログラムが行われているようです。AED（自動体外式除細動器）の使い方などを学ぶ「応急救護処置教習」も実習しながら学ぶのだとか。どれも事故を起こさない運転を習得するために年月を経て考え出された教習ということでしょうか。

 

運転する自信がない家族はもちろんAT車限定を目指しますが、私の頃はAT車は登場していましたが、AT車限定を取得する人はほとんどいなかったような気がします。今思えば両手両足を絶妙な力加減で操作するなどよくやっていたなと思います。もちろん坂道で停止するとヒヤヒヤしましたし、思いもよらない場所でエンストしたりすると泣きたくなりました。昔どこかの山道で渋滞にはまり、前を行く友人の車が坂道発進するときにズルズルと下がってきて自分の車で受け止めたのは忘れられない思い出です（笑）。

次第に頭で考えなくても自然に運転操作ができるようになってくると運転の面白味も分かり、AT車にはない楽しさもありました。ギアチェンジの楽しさを忘れられず未だに頑なにMT車に乗る知人もおります。

 

テレビで観たのですが最近は「ほめちぎる教習所」が増えているのだそうですね。昔の教習所は厳しかったとよく言われますが個人的には怖い思いをした記憶はあまりありません。

少子化により教習生が減り経営が難しくなったことも「ほめちぎる教習所」へ移行した要因とも言われていますがそれだけではないようです。

テレビを観ているとただ「ほめる」だけではなく「ほめちぎる」のです。ちょっと気恥ずかしくもなりますが、普段そんなに思いっきり褒められることがあるでしょうか。私も一日だけでいいので通ってみたくなりました。

ほめちぎるとは例えば脱輪した場合でも「よく止まれたね！」と前向きな声掛けがされるとか。他にも「集中力がすばらしい」「姿勢がいい」などなど。そんなに褒められてばかりで上達するの？と心配になりますが、これは必ずしも気分を良くさせて教習生を増やすのが目的ではないとのこと。教習生と指導員の間の緊張を解き、信頼関係を作り、適切な指導を潤滑に行うために必要だと考えられているそうです。

実際にほめちぎる指導法は検定合格率を上げ、卒業生の事故率を下げているのだとか。

あからさまに褒められても…と思いながらも体や脳は素直に喜ぶようにできているのかもしれませんね。

My family, who had been saying that they did not want to get a driver’s license because they did not feel like they could drive, finally made up their minds to go to a driving school.

I heard that many driving schools now offer a shuttle bus service to and from school, but as I recall, I rode my bicycle to school in the middle of summer. It was too hard to bike and it motivated me to get my license as soon as possible, so I’ll leave it at that.

 

Some say that in the old days there were no courses where you actually drove on the highway, but for some reason I took one. It was a faint memory, but it came back to me. The first time I felt my life was in danger was when we were merging onto the highway. I wondered how the instructor sitting next to me could ride so calmly, but I am sure he must have been very scared. Although it was only a short distance, it was a sobering experience to realize how fast cars really are. At the same time, I was excited to be able to go to an unfamiliar place if I kept driving on the highway.

Nowadays, highway lessons are often held after obtaining a provisional license, and some driving schools use driving simulators for practice.

There are also other programs that did not exist in my time, such as “parking and stopping” lessons on actual roads, “observational learning” in which students observe instructors driving on actual roads, and “discussion lessons” in which students discuss each other’s driving and risk prediction. The students also learn how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) while practicing first aid. All of these programs have been developed over the years to help people learn how to drive without causing accidents.

 

Families who are not confident in their driving skills will of course aim for AT-only driving, but I don’t think there were many people acquiring AT-only driving when I was a child, although AT cars were on the market. Looking back now, I think I used to operate both hands and both feet with exquisite strength and control. Of course, I had a nervous feeling when I had to stop on a slope, and I wanted to cry when the car stalled in an unexpected place. I will never forget the time I was stuck in traffic on a mountain road somewhere and my friend’s car in front of me slid backwards when he started off after stopping, and I had to catch it with my own car (laughs).

(Laughs) Gradually, as I became able to drive naturally without having to think about it, I began to understand the fun of driving, and I think I enjoyed it in a way that AT cars did not. Some of my acquaintances still stubbornly drive MT cars because they cannot forget the fun of changing gears.

 

I saw on TV that “driving schools that praise drivers” are increasing these days. It is often said that driving schools in the past were strict, but I personally don’t remember having a scary experience.

It is said that the declining number of students due to the declining birth rate has made it difficult to manage the schools, and this is one of the reasons for the shift to “driving schools that praise”, but that does not seem to be the only reason.

When I watch TV, I see that they don’t just “praise” but “praise away. It is a little embarrassing, but how often do you get praised that much? I would like to try it myself, even if it is only for one day.

By “praise,” I mean, for example, that even if you break a wheel, they will say something positive like, “You did a good job stopping! and “You did a great job stopping! Other compliments include, “Your concentration is excellent,” “Your posture is good,” and so on. I am worried that I will never improve with so many compliments, but this does not necessarily make me feel better. However, the purpose of this is not necessarily to increase the number of trainees by making them feel good. It is believed to be necessary in order to release tension between the student and instructor, to build a relationship of trust, and to lubricate appropriate instruction.

In fact, the praising teaching method has actually increased the test pass rate and lowered the accident rate among graduates.

Perhaps our bodies and brains are made to be honestly pleased even though we are overtly praised….

大阪万博の開催から約２か月が過ぎました。訪れた人の体験談を聞いたり写真を見せてもらうことも増え、うっかり行った気分になりそうですが、残念ながらまだ体験しておりません。

先日見せてもらった実物大のガンダム像の写真。周囲の人間の大きさと比べてもかなり大きく、写真だけでも迫力があるので実際に目の前に現れたら圧倒されてしまうのでしょうね。

 

 

 

 

しかしこの片膝立ちのポーズ、生粋のガンダムファンの中には違和感を覚える人もいるようです。個人的には兄弟のプラモデルづくりを手伝ったくらいで、ガンダムの知識がほぼなく、物語の中の象徴的なポーズ？かと思っていたくらいですが、実は片膝立ちにならざるを得ない経緯があったようです。（ガンダムファンには叱られそうですが、私にはどうしてもヨガの「戦士のポーズ」の片手バージョンに見えてしまうのですが…。）

 

こちらのガンダム像は２０２４年３月まで横浜市の「ガンダムファクトリーYOKOHAMA」に展示されていたガンダムの機体が運ば込まれています。噂には聞いておりましたが、実物大でしかも手足を動かせるそうです。そもそも色々なポーズが可能な仕様なのですね。高さは１７メートル、総重量が４９.１トンとういうパビリオン並みの存在感です。

バンダイナムコグループの説明によると、このポーズは「宇宙と未来に向けて手を差し伸べているイメージ」なのだとか。確かにそのようにも見えますが、実情として万博における建築物の高さ制限の影響もあるのだそうです。

 

１９７０年に開催された大阪万博では建築物の高さ制限はまだなく、７０ｍを超える「太陽の塔」がそびえ立っておりました。今見ても斬新なデザインで人々を引き付けます。１９００年のパリ万博のエッフェル塔もそうですね。デザインの素晴らしさは言うまでもないのですが、やはり大きいというだけで人々を圧倒し、注目を浴びる要素になることも否定できません。

 

しかし近年では参加国の公平性、平等性が意識されるようになり、資金力に頼ることなく展示内容を重視する傾向にあることからパビリオンなどの建築物の高さ制限が定められています。

今回の万博のパビリオンの高さは原則１２m以下と定められております。例外として水平投影面積が建築面積の２分の１未満であれば２０メートルまで可能だそうです。急に難しい言葉が出てきましたが、水平投影面積とは真上から光を当てた時に地面に影となって映る部分の面積だそうです。そうするとガンダム像は立つこともできたかもしれんせんが、安全面の考慮などからも今の片膝立ちポーズになったようです。

 

この片膝立ちポーズになったことで、同じ片膝立ちポーズで写真撮影を楽しむ人の姿も多いとか。また立像では見ることのできなかった足裏を見ることができ、多くの人が足裏に集まって写真を撮っているのだそうです。万博キャラクターの「みゃくみゃく」もガンダム像のどこかに隠れているらしく、「みゃくみゃく探し」も楽しまれています。

もともと万博は国や支配者が技術や財宝を誇示し権力を示す場でもありましたが、現在は世界中の人々との交流の場、平和を象徴する場へと移行しています。世界一高いビルや建築物が話題となり、また頻繁に記録が更新されてきましたが、大きくて高いことがその国の権威を表す時代ではなくなってきているようです。

 

本当に詳しくないのですが「機動戦士ガンダム」の物語は、遠い未来に人類が宇宙に移住しスペースコロニーで生活しているという設定だそうです。宇宙でも人類は戦争を繰り返し、ガンダムは人が中に入って操る戦闘機として使用されます。そう考えるとガンダムに平和のポーズをさせることは演出として意味の大きいことなのかもしれません。ヨガのポーズにしか見えないと言ったことを撤回させていただきます。

About two months have passed since the Osaka Expo was held. I have been hearing more and more about the experiences of people who visited the Expo and seeing more and more photos, and I almost feel like I have inadvertently been there, but unfortunately, I have not experienced it yet.

This is a photo of a life-size Gundam statue I was shown the other day. It is quite large compared to the size of the people around it, and I feel powerful just looking at the photo, so I guess I would be overwhelmed if I actually saw it in front of me.

However, this pose of standing on one knee seems to be uncomfortable for some genuine Gundam fans. Personally, I only helped my brothers build plastic models and I am not familiar with Gundam, so I thought it was just a symbolic pose in the story, but in fact, there is a lot more to it than that. (At the risk of being scolded by Gundam fans, I can’t help but think it looks like a one-handed version of the yoga “warrior pose”…)

 

This Gundam statue is a Gundam that was displayed at the “Gundam Factory Yokohama” in Yokohama City until March 2024. I had heard rumors about it, but it is full-scale and its arms and legs can be moved. The machine can be posed in a variety of different ways. At 17 meters tall and 49.1 tons in weight, it has a pavilion-like presence.

According to the explanation by the Bandai Namco Group, this pose is “an image of a hand reaching out toward space and the future. It certainly looks that way, but the reality is that it is also influenced by the height restrictions on buildings at the Expo.

 

At the 1970 Osaka Expo, there were no height restrictions on buildings, and the Tower of the Sun, which stood over 70 meters tall, soared above the city. Even today, the Tower of the Sun attracts people with its innovative design, as does the Eiffel Tower at the 1900 Paris Expo. Needless to say, the design of the tower is wonderful, but there is no denying that its large size is a factor that overwhelms people and attracts their attention.

 

In recent years, however, there has been a growing awareness of the fairness and equality of participating countries, and a trend toward placing more emphasis on the content of exhibits rather than relying on financial resources has led to height restrictions for pavilions and other structures.

In principle, the height of pavilions at this year’s Expo is set at 12 m or less. As an exception, they are allowed up to 20 meters if the horizontal projected area is less than one-half of the building area. This is a difficult word to explain, but it is said that the horizontal projected area is the area of the shadow cast on the ground when light is shined on it from above. The Gundam statue could have been standing, but it seems that the current pose of standing on one knee was adopted due to safety considerations.

 

Since the statue is now in this one-kneeling pose, many people enjoy taking pictures of the statue in the same pose. Also, the soles of the feet, which could not be seen in the standing statue, can be seen, and many people gather around the soles of the feet to take pictures. The character of the Expo, “Chiryoku-nyaku,” is also said to be hidden somewhere in the Gundam statue, and visitors enjoy “searching for Chiryoku-nyaku” as well.

Originally, the Expo was a place for nations and rulers to show off their technology and treasures and demonstrate their power, but now it has shifted to a place for interaction with people around the world and a symbol of peace. The world’s tallest buildings and structures have been the talk of the town and records have been broken frequently, but it seems that the time has come when being big and tall no longer represents a country’s authority.

I am not really familiar with the story of “Mobile Suit Gundam,” but the story is set in the distant future, where humans have migrated to space and are living in space colonies. Even in space, humans are at war with each other, and the Gundam is used as a fighting machine that people can enter and operate. Considering this, having the Gundam strike a pose of peace may make a lot of sense as a stage direction. I take back what I said about it looking like a yoga pose.

女優の石田ゆり子さんがバッサリ髪を切ってショートカットにしているのを見て、私も髪を切りたくなりました。1年のうちに何回か髪をバッサリ切りたくなるのですが、なかなか実行には移せません。

 

ところで、髪の毛の重さって考えてみたことありますか？

私たちの髪の毛は、平均で１０万本程度あります。髪の長さが30～40センチの場合、約100ｇくらいなのだそう。100ｇというと、コンビニのおにぎりくらいの重さでしょうか…。

ロングヘアで腰くらいまでの長さになると、約200～250ｇほどになるのだそう。100ｇくらいなら、そんなに重さは気にならないかもしれないですが、200ｇになると重さを多少感じてしまいそうです。

 

髪の毛がロングの場合は、肩こりや頭痛にも影響すると言われています。ロングヘアをお団子にして、かわいくした場合、200ｇの塊を首で支えていることになります。さらに可愛く、お団子を右に寄せたり左に寄せたりなんてすると、寄せた肩側に重心がかかってしまいます。あまり気にしたことなかったですけれど。

でも、おにぎりを２個ずっと頭に乗せてると思うと、ちょっと肩に負担がかかってるんじゃないかと思えてきます。
しかも、頭の重さは、成人で４～６㎏。体重の10％くらいの重さがあるのです。これは、肩こりの原因にもなりうるというのは、うなずけます。

そしてお風呂で濡れて水分を含んだ髪は、さらに重くなります。ロングの方は、是非とも、肩の負担を軽減するためにも、タオルドライした後に早く乾かした方がよさそうですね。

 

ちなみに…ラプンツェルのあの髪の長さは、21メートルもあるそうです。
ということは…重さは、30キロくらい⁉
普通、30キロの髪の毛であんなに跳んで踊れないよな…と現実的なことを考えてしまう私です。

By the way, have you ever thought about the weight of your hair?

On average, we have about 100,000 strands of hair. The weight of a 30-40 cm length of hair is about 100 g. 100 g is about the weight of a rice ball from a convenience store….

If your hair is long and up to your waist, the weight will be about 200-250g. 100g may not bother you that much, but at 200g, you will probably feel the weight somewhat.

 

 

If the hair is long, it is said to affect stiff shoulders and headaches. If you wear your long hair in a cute bun, you are supporting a 200 gram mass on your neck. If you pull your hair into a bun to the right or left to make it prettier, your center of gravity will be on your shoulders. I had never really thought about it.

 

But when I think of carrying two rice balls on my head all the time, I start to think that my shoulders are a little overloaded.
Moreover, the head weighs 4 to 6 kg for an adult. That’s about 10% of your body weight. This is a nod to the fact that it can also cause stiff shoulders.

And hair that gets wet in the bath and contains moisture becomes even heavier. If you have long hair, by all means, it would be better to dry it quickly after towel drying to reduce the burden on your shoulders.

 

By the way…that hair of Rapunzel’s is said to be 21 meters long.
That means…it weighs about 30 kilograms⁉
Normally, she can’t jump and dance like that with 30 kilograms of hair…I’m thinking realistically.

普段あまり冷たい飲み物は飲まないのですが、夏になると冷たくて甘い抹茶ドリンクを無性に飲みたくなります。抹茶の苦味と香りが気分をシャキッとさせてくれます。

 

今タイなどの暑い国では甘くて体を冷やしてくれる抹茶スイーツが爆発的な人気で、特にバンコクでは抹茶スイーツ専門店がコーヒー専門店を凌ぐ勢いで増えているそうです。

日本ではペットボトルのお茶の種類が豊富になるにつれ、急須でお茶を飲む人がここ１０年で３割ほど減少しているという報告もあります。若い人などはそもそも急須を持っていない人も多いとか。

国内の茶葉の消費が減る一方で、海外での人気が高まっており輸出量が急激に伸びています。抹茶は茶葉を粉にして飲むので、カテキンやテアニン、ビタミンEや食物繊維などの栄養素を全て摂取できるとして健康志向の高い人々の興味を集めているのだとか。

コーヒーよりもカフェインの効きが緩やかで長く効果が続くそうで、体にも優しいイメージがあり子供でも飲めるのが人気の要因でもあるようです。

北米地域では健康志向の高まりにより抹茶はスーパーフードとして捉えられ、ヨーロッパでは日本文化への興味から茶道教室が盛況だとか。海外で抹茶がそこまでの人気になっているとは知りませんでした。

 

２０２４年の海外輸出量は８７９８トンだったそうですが、２０３０年には１万５０００トンになるという予想が出ています。お茶農家には嬉しい悲鳴なのではと思っていましたら、そんなに簡単なことではないようです。

先ほども書きましたが、日本国内ではお茶の消費量が減り新茶の価格が下がり続けていたため、お茶農家離れが進んでいました。さらに農家の高齢化により栽培面積は減少の一途をたどっていたのだそうです。そこへ海外の抹茶ブームによる需要が高まり「抹茶クライシス」が起こり、値段が高騰しているのだとか。

 

茶道で使用される抹茶は「碾茶（てんちゃ）」という茶葉から作られ京都、愛知、静岡、奈良、福岡などで栽培されています。玉露と同じく茶園に覆いをかけて育てられ、手摘みした後に乾燥させ、茎や葉脈を取り除きます。そのあと臼で細かく挽いていくのですが、挽くスピードが速いと熱が発生し茶葉が劣化するそうで、ゆっくりしか挽けず、これもまた生産が追い付かない原因となっています。

スイーツなどに使われる抹茶は加工用抹茶と呼ばれるものも多く、碾茶ではなく別の茶葉で別の方法で作られているものもあるそうです。

 

日本で初めて抹茶を使ったデザートを作ったのは、和歌山県でお茶屋さんとして１５０年の歴史を持つ「玉林園」とされています。１９５８年に抹茶入りのソフトクリームを開発し、今でも和歌山市民のソウルフードとなっています。

そして全国的に抹茶スイーツ人気を高めたのは、やはり１９９６年に発売されたハーゲンダッツの「グリーンティー」だといわれています。日本で７年の歳月をかけて開発され今では世界中で定番となっています。ハーゲンダッツは「家庭にある素材で作る」という理念を掲げているため、シンプルな素材のみで抹茶の苦味を生かしつつミルクの濃厚さとのバランスをとることが難しかったようです。また時間が経つと抹茶の鮮やかな緑がくすんでしまうという難題が起こったため、研究者たちはまず抹茶を知ることから始めたとか。

そして７年の研究の末に、初摘み茶葉を使用したお茶の苦味がしっかりと残る爽やかで濃厚なアイスが生まれました。カップや蓋は他のフレーバーとは違い光を遮るものが使用され、加工の途中でも抹茶を扱う際には暗闇の中で作業を行い、光や熱を加えないようにしているのだそうです。

なんだか頭の中が抹茶アイスで一杯になってきました。帰りに買ってしまいそうです。

 

抹茶人気に伴い、海外から茶筅などの注文も増えており、伝統的な茶筅作りで有名な奈良高山の「翠華園」でも海外向けに飾りを施した茶筅を輸出販売しています。全て手作業で作る工程に外国の方々は驚嘆するそうです。

国内だけでは衰退してしまいそうな伝統技術が海外の人により復活し、受け継がれていくのは大変有難くもありますが、少々複雑な気持ちにもなります。

I don’t usually drink cold drinks, but in the summer, I have an irresistible craving for a cold, sweet matcha drink. The bitterness and aroma of matcha tea makes me feel refreshed.

 

In hot countries such as Thailand, matcha sweets, which are sweet and cooling to the body, are exploding in popularity, especially in Bangkok, where the number of stores specializing in matcha sweets is said to be growing faster than that of coffee shops.

In Japan, it is reported that the number of people who drink tea with a teapot has decreased by about 30% in the past 10 years as the variety of bottled teas has become more abundant. Many young people, for example, do not even own a kyusu in the first place.

While domestic consumption of tea leaves is decreasing, its popularity is increasing overseas, and exports are growing rapidly. Since matcha is made from powdered tea leaves, it is attracting the interest of health-conscious people as a source of all nutrients, including catechins, theanine, vitamin E, and dietary fiber.

The caffeine effect is said to be slower and lasts longer than coffee, and its popularity is also due to its health-friendly image and the fact that even children can drink it.

In North America, matcha is considered a superfood due to growing health consciousness, and in Europe, tea ceremony classes are thriving due to interest in Japanese culture. I had no idea that matcha had become so popular overseas.

 

I heard that the amount of tea exported overseas in 2024 was 8,798 tons, and it is expected to reach 15,000 tons by 2030. I thought it would be a great news for tea farmers, but it seems that it is not that easy.

As I mentioned earlier, tea consumption in Japan has been declining and the price of new tea has been falling, so tea farmers have been leaving the industry. In addition, the cultivation area was decreasing due to the aging of farmers. Then, the demand for matcha from overseas increased due to the matcha boom, causing a “matcha crisis,” and the price of matcha has skyrocketed.

 

Matcha used in the tea ceremony is made from “tencha” tea leaves, which are grown in Kyoto, Aichi, Shizuoka, Nara, Fukuoka, and other regions. Like gyokuro, it is grown in tea gardens under cover, hand-picked, dried, and stripped of stems and veins. The tea leaves are then finely ground in a mortar, but if the grinding speed is too fast, heat is generated and the tea leaves deteriorate, so the grinding can only be done slowly, which is another reason why production cannot keep up.

Matcha used in sweets is often called “processed matcha,” and is made using a different method with different tea leaves instead of tencha.

 

Gyokurinen, a tea shop with a 150-year history in Wakayama Prefecture, is believed to be the first company in Japan to create a dessert using matcha green tea. 1958 saw the development of a soft-serve ice cream containing matcha green tea, which is still a soul food for Wakayama citizens.

 

It is also said that it was Häagen-Dazs’ “Green Tea” released in 1996 that made matcha sweets popular nationwide. It took seven years to develop in Japan and is now a worldwide standard. Because Haagen-Dazs’ philosophy is to “make it with ingredients you can find at home,” it was difficult to balance the richness of the milk with the bitterness of the matcha using only simple ingredients. The researchers began by getting to know matcha first, because the bright green color of matcha tends to dull over time.

After seven years of research, they created a refreshing, rich ice cream that retains the bitterness of tea made from the first harvest of tea leaves. Unlike other flavors, the cups and lids are made to block out light, and even during processing, they work in the dark when handling the matcha to avoid adding light or heat.

My head is kind of full of matcha ice cream. I think I will buy some on my way home.

 

With the popularity of matcha, orders for tea whisks and other products from overseas have been increasing. Suikaen in Takayama, Nara, which is famous for making traditional tea whisks, is also exporting and selling decorated tea whisks for overseas customers. Foreigners are said to be amazed at the process of making all the work by hand.

It is a great honor to see the revival of this traditional technique, which might otherwise have faded away in Japan alone, being passed on to the next generation by people overseas, but it also gives me mixed feelings.

毎日本当に暑いですね…。

お出かけに、出勤に、日傘がかかせない方も多いかと思います。

 

日本ほど日傘を使う国は珍しいと言われますが、外国人へのアンケートで、「日本の夏の暑さ対策で、感心した・驚いた対策があるか」という項目の１位は、「日傘をさす」（46％）だったそう。ちなみに、海外では日焼け止めクリームを塗るのが主流で、日傘を差すのは主に年配の方のようです。日傘をさすというのは、日本や中国といった東アジア圏特有の文化のようですね。

ちなみに、雨傘よりも日傘のほうが歴史が長く、起源はなんと、約4000年前。エジプトやペルシャなどの彫刻画や壁画に、アテネの貴婦人たちが日傘を従者に持たせて歩く絵が残されています。

 

ところが、よく使うからこそ、日本の傘の消費量はとても多く、日本洋傘振興協会の調査によると、日本では年間約1.3億本もの洋傘が消費されているそうです。そのうち約8,000万本がビニール傘であると推定されています。ビニール傘は手ごろな分、置き忘れてしまったり、すぐに捨ててしまったりする方も多いかもしれません。しかし、傘はリサイクルが難しく焼却や埋め立てで処分するしかなく、深刻な環境問題となっているようです。

 

「駅から出たら雨が降っていた」「家に帰るだけとはいえ雨に濡れたくない」「傘をどこかに置き忘れた」

こんな経験は誰にもあると思います。持っていない、忘れたときに限って必要になるのが傘というものですが、この数字をみると、ちょっとビニール傘を簡単に買うのをやめようかなと考えさせられます。

 

 

職人さんに心を込めて作られることもあれば、工場で大量に作られる傘もあります。長年に渡って誰かを日差しや雨から守る傘もあれば、簡単に電車などに忘れられてしまったり、「誰かが忘れていった傘だから使っていいよ」なんて何人もの手に渡ったりする傘もあります。人の一生のように考えると、宿命とも思えるこの傘の数奇な一生…。

 

傘の寿命は2～3年と言われますが、少しでも長く使って、傘＝使い捨ての概念が無くなればいいなと思います。

Many of you probably need a parasol when you go out or to work.

 

It is said that it is rare for a country to use parasols as much as Japan does, but according to a survey of foreigners, the top item on the question “Are there any countermeasures against the summer heat in Japan that impressed or surprised you? Incidentally, it seems that in other countries, applying sunscreen cream is the mainstream, and parasols are mainly used by older people. It seems that the use of parasols is a cultural practice unique to East Asian countries such as Japan and China.

Incidentally, parasols have a longer history than rain umbrellas, dating back some 4,000 years. Sculptures and wall paintings from Egypt and Persia show Athenian ladies walking with parasols in the hands of their attendants.

 

However, because they are used so often, the consumption of umbrellas in Japan is very high. According to a survey by the Japan Umbrella Promotion Association, about 130 million parasols are consumed annually in Japan. It is estimated that about 80 million of these umbrellas are vinyl umbrellas. Because of the affordability of plastic umbrellas, many people may misplace them or throw them away immediately. However, umbrellas are difficult to recycle and must be disposed of by incineration or landfill, which has become a serious environmental problem.

 

We have all had this experience: “It was raining when I got out of the station,” “I don’t want to get wet even if I am only going home,” or “I left my umbrella somewhere.”

I left my umbrella somewhere. Umbrellas are only needed when you don’t have one with you or have forgotten it, but these figures make me think that I should stop buying vinyl umbrellas so easily.

 

Some umbrellas are made with care by craftsmen, while others are mass-produced in factories. Some umbrellas protect someone from the sun or rain for many years, while others are easily forgotten on a train or in the hands of several people who say, “Someone forgot it, so you can use it. If you think of it like a person’s life, this odd life may be the fate of umbrellas.

 

It is said that the lifespan of an umbrella is two to three years, but I hope that people will use umbrellas for as long as possible and the concept of umbrellas as disposable items will disappear.
