昨夜は車いすテニス女子シングルス決勝をライブで観戦することができ、上地結衣選手の接戦の末の金メダル獲得に未だ興奮が冷めやりません。自分の語彙不足がもどかしいのですが、とにかく凄い！としか表現のしようがない３時間の激闘でした。

勝利の瞬間、うれし涙で動けない上地選手にオランダの相手選手がネットを超え近づき、勝者を称える姿に思わずもらい泣き。私、年齢と共に涙腺が緩んでおります。

ストロークの度に自分も力が入り試合終了後には勝手にクタクタになっております。今朝の背中の痛みはそのせいでしょうか？

 

さて楽しみにしていたボッチャの試合はなかなかテレビで生放送されませんでしたが、混合団体の銅メダルをかけた試合を録画で観戦することができました。ニュースのダイジェストとは違い、一投一投解説を聞きながら観戦すると競技の奥深さを知ることができ、楽しさも倍増します。

 

「地上のカーリング」とも呼ばれるボッチャ。実は私冬季オリンピック競技のカーリング観戦も大好物でして何試合でも観ていられます。ボッチャはカーリングと違って的（まと）となるボールを自分のショットにより動かすことができます。そのため大逆転も起きやすく最後まで試合の展開が読めずハラハラしっぱなしです。

ボッチャとはイタリア語で「ボール」を意味し、認知度は１０年前には数％しかありませんでしたが、東京パラリンピックの後５０％にまで上がったと言われています。私もその５０％に含まれます。その立役者とされているのが前回の東京パラリンピックで個人金メダルを獲った杉村英孝選手です。今回の混合団体のメンバーでもありますが、その技術は「精密機械」にも例えられ、針の穴を通すようなミリ単位の精度の高いショットを放ちます。壁となっている球をすり抜け、えっそんなところを通すの！と驚きの連続です。また２手３手先を読む力に優れており頭脳戦に長けている選手だと言われています。どんな場面でも実にクールなのです。

杉村選手は握力がほとんどなく、球をつまむ状態から腕を振り子のように揺らしてショットを放っています。他の球を押し出しやすいザラザラした球、狙った場所に止まりやすいツルツルした球など、規定内で素材の違う球を様々な場面で使い分けているとか。

今大会、杉村選手は個人戦でのメダル獲得はかないませんでしたが、混合団体で銅メダルを獲得しました。あとの２人のメンバーである女子個人銅メダリストの遠藤裕美選手は、迷いのないショットが気持ちよく、ショットを打つまでかなりの時間をかける男子選手たちに比べ、割と思い切りよくポイっと投げる姿が格好良かったです。もちろんコントロールは抜群です。

もう一人の力強いショットが持ち前の廣瀬隆喜選手は、少し強面（個人的意見ですが）に見えるのですが、代表メンバーに誰よりも早く誕生日おめでとうメールを送るなどの温かい人柄の紹介もあり、やはりダイジェストニュースだけでは伝わらないものがあるなと実感しました。結果の点数差だけを見ると圧勝だったのかと想像していましたが、実際には最終エンドまで勝敗が分からない接戦だったことから、やはりライブで観戦したいぞという思いが強くなりました。

 

冬季オリンピックでカーリングの試合を初めて観た時はこんなに面白いスポーツがあるのかと感動しましたが、なにせ氷上の競技のため自分には縁のない競技だろうと思っていましたら、カーリングの陸上版ともいえる「ユニカール」という競技があるそうです。１９７９年にスウェーデンで考案されたそうです。現在は日本でも大会が開催されているようで、いつか挑戦してみたいなとぼんやり思っていましたら、父が既に始めておりました。血は争えません。

 

パラリンピックに起源はロンドン郊外のストーク・マンデビル病院内で開かれたアーチェリーの競技会だそうで、第二次世界大戦で脊髄を損傷した兵士たちのリハビリの一環として行われ、１９８８年のソウル大会からオリンピック直後に同じ場所で開催されるようになりました。

はじめはParaplegia＝脊髄損傷により下半身にまひがある、人々のオリンピックという意味で「Paralympic」という愛称が名づけられましたが、現在はギリシャ語のパラ＝Para（平行、沿う）という意味から、「もう一つのオリンピック」としてパラリンピックと呼ばれているそうです。

残りの競技も楽しみにしております。

 

実は今回は九谷焼の小皿について綴ってみようと思っていたのですが、長くなってしまったのでまた次の機会に。

Last night, I was able to watch the women’s singles final of the wheelchair tennis tournament live, and I am still very excited to see Yui Kamiji win the gold medal after a close match. I am frustrated by my lack of vocabulary, but I just can’t help but say, “Wow! It was a fierce battle that lasted for 3 hours, and I can only describe it as “amazing!

At the moment of victory, I couldn’t help but cry as my Dutch opponent approached over the net and praised the winner while I was stuck in tears of joy. My tear gland is getting slower with age.

I am exhausted after each stroke and after the match is over. Is that why my back is aching this morning?

 

The Boccia matches I had been looking forward to were not broadcast live on TV, but I was able to watch the mixed team bronze medal game on a recording. Unlike digests on the news, watching the games while listening to the commentary on each throw helped me to understand the depth of the competition and doubled the enjoyment.

 

Boccia is also called “curling on earth. In fact, I am also a big fan of curling at the Winter Olympics and can watch as many games as I want. Unlike curling, in Boccia you can move the ball, the target, with your shot. Therefore, it is easy for a big upset to happen, and you can’t read the development of the game until the very end, keeping you on the edge of your seat.

Boccia means “ball” in Italian, and while awareness of the game was only a few percent 10 years ago, it is said to have risen to 50 percent after the Tokyo Paralympics. I am included in that 50%. Hidetaka Sugimura, who won an individual gold medal at the last Tokyo Paralympics, is considered to be the driving force behind this increase. He is also a member of this year’s mixed team, and his technique is compared to that of a “precision machine,” with shots that are precise to the millimeter, like passing through the hole of a needle. They are able to slip through the wall of the ball, and are able to pass through such places! You will be amazed at how it passes through such a hole! He is also said to be an excellent player with the ability to read two or three moves ahead, and is a skilled brain fighter. He is very cool in any situation.

Sugimura has almost no grip strength and releases his shots by swinging his arms like a pendulum from the state of picking up the ball. He uses different types of balls with different materials within the regulations, such as a rough ball that easily pushes out other balls, and a slippery ball that easily stops at the target spot, in various situations.

Sugimura did not win a medal in the individual competition this year, but she did win a bronze medal in the mixed team competition. The other two members of the team, Hiromi Endo, the women’s individual bronze medalist, had a nice, hesitation-free shot. Compared to the men’s team, who take a long time before hitting a shot, she threw the ball rather boldly with a plop, which was cool. Of course, his control is excellent.

Another player with a powerful shot, Takayuki Hirose, looks a little tough (in my opinion), but he also introduced his warm personality by sending a happy birthday e-mail to the team members before anyone else, which made me realize that there are things that cannot be conveyed only by digest news. I imagined that it was an overwhelming victory only looking at the score difference, but in reality, it was a close game where the winner was not known until the final end, which made me want to watch the game live.

 

When I first saw a curling match at the Winter Olympics, I was impressed that such an interesting sport existed, but I thought it was something I had no connection to because it is a sport on ice. It was invented in Sweden in 1979. I heard that there are currently competitions held in Japan, and I was thinking vaguely that I would like to try it someday, but my father had already started it. Blood is no contest.

 

The Paralympics originated from an archery competition held at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in the suburbs of London, as part of the rehabilitation of soldiers who suffered spinal cord injuries during World War II, and the event has been held at the same place immediately after the Olympics since the 1988 Seoul Games.

At first, the games were nicknamed “Paralympic,” meaning the Olympics for people with paraplegia (paralysis of the lower body due to spinal cord injury), but now they are called “Paralympic Games” as “another Olympics” from the Greek word “Para” (parallel, along). The rest of the competitions are also looking forward to them.

I am looking forward to the rest of the competitions.
