今週の名古屋は暑さが復活して厳しい残暑となっていますが、気づけば蝉の鳴き声も変化していて、秋の気配も感じられるようになってきましたね。

 

 

さて先日、仏像の「印相（いんそう）」についてブログに使う写真を撮っていて、そう言えば、仏像の耳ってだいたい「福耳」だな、などとぼんやり考えていました。

 

福耳とは、耳たぶが大きく肉の厚い耳のこと。大黒天のように耳たぶが大きくふっくらしている耳で、金運や福運があるとされたため福耳と呼ばれ、福相だといわれています。

福耳の中でも、「耳たぶが上向きになっている」タイプと「耳たぶが真下に垂れ下がっている」タイプがあり、耳たぶの上に米粒が乗るくらい上向きになっている形が最も良い福耳なのだそうです。

 

福耳といえば昔から、お金持ちのイメージが強いのですが、福耳だからお金持ちになったのか、お金持ちには福耳が多いからそうなったのか。まるで「卵が先か鶏が先か」なのですが、福耳と金持ちが結び付いたのには、理由があるようです。

 

福耳の代表といえる「大黒天」は、財宝・開運の神様で大変立派な福耳をされていますね。また、商売繁昌や豊漁・豊作の神様とされている「恵比寿」、福徳の神様とされている「布袋尊」など、お金や財産に関わる神様は立派な福耳をしています。そこで、金運や財産運を司る神様と同じ福耳をしていれば、縁起が良く、お金に困らないと考えられるようになったのだそうです。

 

 

同じように仏像の垂れ下がった耳も福耳で、耳朶（耳たぶ）には穴があいている訳ですが、これは耳朶環状（じだかんじょう）と言って、仏の姿の特徴を示したひとつで『三十二相八十種好（さんじゅうにそうはちじっしゅこう）』呼ばれています。

経典により多少の違いはありますが、仏像や仏画はこれに倣って作成されるそうですので、一様にみな耳が大きいということになるのでしょうか。

 

 

 

仏像の耳が大きいのには、衆生の声を聞き洩らすことなく聞きとる為と言われています。それでも聞き取りにくい時は、手のひらを耳にかざしてもれなく聞き取ろうとするため、仏像の耳の大きさは、ほぼ手の大きさと同じサイズで作られているとか。

ですので、もし昔の仏像が損傷の激しい状態で見つかっても、一方の手か、耳が残っていれば少なくとも手と耳の大きさが分かるかもしれないということですね。

また、仏像の顔には決まりがあり、仏師のクセは出にくいそうなのですが、耳の形は決まりがなく、個性が出やすい部分なのだそうです。

 

なるほど。仏像もそんな見方をあらかじめ頭に入れると、色々興味が沸いてきます。

人間の場合はどうでしょう？耳の大きな人は聞き上手でしょうか？それについては、ちょっとコメントしづらいですね。

仏像同様、福耳かどうかも含めて他の人の耳の形が気になって観察してしまいそうです。

This week in Nagoya, the heat has returned and the lingering summer heat has become severe, but I noticed that the sound of cicadas is changing and I can feel the signs of autumn.

The other day, I was taking pictures for my blog about “Inso” of Buddhist statues, and I was thinking vaguely that Buddhist statues usually have “Fukumimi” ears.

Fukumimi means ears with large earlobes and thick flesh. Like Daikokuten, ears with large, plump earlobes are called “Fukumimi” because they are believed to bring money and good fortune, and are said to be a good sign of good fortune.

There are two types of “Fukumimi,” one with the earlobes pointing upward and the other with the earlobes hanging right down.

 

The best type of ears are the ones that point upward so much that a grain of rice rests on the top of the earlobe. It is like an “egg first or chicken second” question, but there seems to be a reason why Fukumimi and rich people are connected.

Daikokuten, the representative of Fukumimi, is the god of treasure and good fortune, and has very fine Fukumimi. Other gods related to money and property, such as Ebisu, who is considered the god of prosperity in business and a bountiful catch and harvest, and Hotei, who is considered the god of good fortune, also have splendid ears. Therefore, it came to be thought that if one wears the same blessed ears as the gods of money and property, he or she will have good luck and will not be troubled with money.

Similarly, the drooping ears of Buddha images are also blessed ears, and the earlobes have holes in them, which is called “jidabutsukan” (earlobe ring shape).

Although there are some differences depending on the scriptures, Buddhist statues and paintings are said to be created in accordance with this principle, so I suppose that all statues and paintings have large ears.

It is said that the reason why Buddha images have large ears is so that they can hear the voices of sentient beings. When they still have difficulty hearing, they hold their palms up to their ears in order to hear all of the voices, so the ears of Buddha images are almost the same size as their hands.

So, even if an old Buddha statue is found in a severely damaged condition, if one of the hands or an ear remains, we may at least be able to determine the size of the hand and ear.

Also, it is said that the face of a Buddha statue has a certain shape and it is difficult for a Buddhist sculptor to show his/her own peculiarities, but the shape of the ear has no rule and it is easy to show the individuality of the sculptor.

I see. If you look at Buddhist statues in this way, you will be more interested in them.
By the way, what about human beings? Are people with large ears good listeners?

Like Buddha images, I am likely to be curious about other people’s ears, including whether they are blessed ears or not, and observe them.
