穏やかな陽気ですが、本日７日は二十四節気の「大雪（たいせつ）」です。

高い山はすっかり冠雪し、平地でも場所や天候によっては積雪のニュースもちらほら聞こえてきました。本格的な冬です。

イチョウ並木の鮮やかな黄色もそろそろ見納めでしょうか。イチョウの木が鮮やかな黄色に染まる風景は、実は紅葉よりも好きかもしれません。ですが、雨上がりにイチョウ並木の下を歩いていると、ツルっと滑りそうになるので、イチョウの落ち葉はちょっと厄介者です。

他の落ち葉は踏むとパリパリと崩れてしまいますが、イチョウの葉は地面に落ちても形はそのままで、葉も茶色にならずきれいなままです。

実はイチョウの葉は腐りにくい成分が入っていて、地面に落ちてもなかなか分解されにくくなっています。

植物の葉の表面には「クチクラ層」という油分を含む層があって、乾燥などから植物を守っているのですが、イチョウには特にその油分が多く含まれているので、落ち葉になって雨に濡れると、次第に分解され、油分が浮き出してくるので、滑りやすくなるというわけです。

以前、お寺関係の知人が、

「イチョウの葉は他の枯れ葉のように燃やしても全然燃えないから、可燃ゴミとして出さないといけない。」と毎年の掃除に辟易していると話していました。

また残念なことに、土に埋めて腐葉土を作るのにも適さないようなんです。

どうやら、広葉樹のようにミミズや微生物がおいしいと思う成分をあまり含まず、逆に美味しくない物を多く含んでいるので、分解してもらえないのだそう。そうは言っても、何年もかければ自然と分解はしていくらしいのですが…。

また、イチョウの木には秋の味覚「ぎんなんの実」がなりますが、じつはオスとメスの木があります。

落ちた実を誰かが踏んだ後の、あの独特の匂い…ちょっと苦手なのですが、その実が落ちている木の方がメスの木です。

木の形としては、実をつけるのでその重みで、全体的に枝が下がっている感じだそう。それに対して、オスの木は枝がぐんぐんと上に伸びている感じなのだそうです。気にしながら見たことはないですが、見比べてみるとわかるんでしょうか。

The weather is mild, but today, the 7th, marks the “Great Snow” solar term.

High mountains are completely crowned with snow, and even in the plains, scattered reports of snowfall are beginning to surface depending on location and weather. Winter is truly here.

The vivid yellow of the ginkgo tree-lined avenues may soon be a sight to behold for the last time. I might actually prefer the sight of ginkgo trees dyed in vivid yellow over autumn foliage. However, walking beneath the ginkgo trees after rain makes them slippery, so ginkgo leaves are a bit of a nuisance.

While other fallen leaves crumble with a crisp crackle underfoot, ginkgo leaves retain their shape even after falling to the ground. They also stay clean and beautiful, never turning brown.

Actually, ginkgo leaves contain components that resist decay, making them slow to decompose even after falling to the ground.

The surface of plant leaves has a layer called the “cuticle layer,” which contains oils that protect the plant from drying out. Ginkgo leaves contain particularly high levels of these oils. So, when they fall and get wet in the rain, they gradually decompose, causing the oils to rise to the surface, making them slippery.

A friend involved with temples once told me,

“Ginkgo leaves don’t burn at all like other dead leaves, so we have to dispose of them as combustible waste.” He was fed up with the annual cleanup.

Unfortunately, they also seem unsuitable for burying in the soil to make leaf mold.

Apparently, unlike broadleaf trees, they contain few components that earthworms and microorganisms find tasty, and conversely, they contain many substances that aren’t palatable, so they aren’t decomposed. That said, it seems they do decompose naturally over many years…

Furthermore, ginkgo trees bear the autumn delicacy “ginkgo nuts,” but there are actually male and female trees.

That distinctive smell after someone steps on fallen nuts… I’m not a big fan, but the trees where those nuts fall are the female ones.

In terms of tree shape, since they bear fruit, the weight causes the branches to droop overall. In contrast, male trees have branches that shoot straight up. I’ve never really paid attention, but I wonder if you could tell by comparing them.

Ginkgo nuts are often used in cooking this time of year. I’m not a big fan myself, so that’s fine, but I remember hearing long ago, “Don’t eat too many ginkgo nuts!”

The edible part of the ginkgo nut is the “kernel” inside the shell. Its chewy texture can be addictive, but overeating is dangerous. Eating too many can cause poisoning. Symptoms like vomiting and convulsions can occur, so it really seems you should be careful not to eat too many.

Incidentally, the exact number causing poisoning isn’t known, but the toxic dose is said to be around 7-150 seeds for children and 40-300 seeds for adults. Forty seeds seems like quite a lot… But if it’s about 40 salt-roasted ginkgo nuts served as a bar snack with drinks, is that a normal amount to eat?

That said, if you enjoy ginkgo nuts, eating them like edamame or pistachios could be dangerous.

クリスマス近くなると各所のイルミネーションが目に入ってきますね。私も先日某女優さんが点灯式をしたクリスマスツリーを眺めてきました。綺麗でした。

個人的な感想としてなのですが、今年のイルミネーションは電球のひとつひとつが小さく繊細なイルミネーションが多いな…なんて思います。最近では有名なツリーやイルミネーションは有名人や俳優さんがイベントイルミの点灯式をしたりと、毎年、流行りやニュースが気になるところですが、ここ数日の寒さも相まってイルミネーションがとても映えますね。

ところで、イルミネーションの起源には諸説あるそうなのですが、一般的に伝えられているのは起源は16世紀とけっこう古いようです。宗教改革で知られるドイツのマルティン・ルターが始めたとされているのですが、彼は夜、森の中で煌めく星を見て感動し、木の枝に多くのロウソクを飾ることでその景色を再現しようとしたそうでして、イメージしてみるとなんとも現像的な森の風景ですよね。

また、現在のような世界初の電球イルミネーションを始めたのは、なんと白熱電球の研究・開発を進めたトーマス・アルバ・エジソンのようでして、彼は自分の研究所の周りを白熱電球で飾り付けたようです。偉大なる発明家がイルミネーションで電飾で飾るといいんじゃないかな？なんて思いつくとは…エジソン、かわいいところありますよね。その後、日本にも明治時代ににルミネーションが登場するのですが、当時の大阪や東京の内国勧業博覧会の会場ではたくさんのイルミネーションで飾られたとのこと。

また、舶来品を扱う明治屋が銀座に進出し、12月15日から毎晩イルミネーションを点灯したことが人々の話題となり、年々派手になっていく装飾にたくさんの人が押し寄せたそうです。日本にイルミネーションが登場してから100年以上もたつのですが、寒い冬にきらめくイルミネーションは毎年日本の人々の心を引きつけていることは変わらないんですね。

As Christmas approaches, you start noticing illuminations everywhere. I recently went to see a Christmas tree lit up by a certain actress. It was beautiful.

Personally, I feel like this year’s illuminations feature many smaller, more delicate bulbs… Lately, famous trees and illuminations often have celebrities or actors perform the lighting ceremonies, making trends and news a yearly focus. Combined with the cold weather these past few days, the illuminations really stand out beautifully.

There are various theories about the origin of illuminations, but the commonly accepted one dates back to the 16th century, which is quite old. It’s said to have been started by Martin Luther of Germany, known for the Reformation. He was moved by the sight of stars twinkling in the forest at night and tried to recreate that scene by decorating tree branches with many candles. Imagining it, it’s quite a picturesque forest scene, isn’t it?

Interestingly, the world’s first electric light illuminations, as we know them today, were apparently started by none other than Thomas Alva Edison, who pioneered incandescent light bulb research and development. He decorated the area around his laboratory with incandescent bulbs. For a great inventor to think, “Hey, why not decorate with lights?”… Edison had a charming side, didn’t he?

Later, illumination arrived in Japan during the Meiji era. The venues for the National Industrial Expositions in Osaka and Tokyo at the time were reportedly decorated with numerous illuminations.
Furthermore, when Meijiya, a store dealing in imported goods, opened in Ginza and began lighting up illuminations every night starting December 15th, it became a hot topic. People flocked to see the decorations, which grew more extravagant each year. It’s been over 100 years since illuminations first appeared in Japan, yet the sparkle of lights in the cold winter continues to captivate the hearts of the Japanese people year after year.

Now I’m itching to head out to the glittering city, drawn by other intriguing Christmas illuminations I’ve heard about…

今日も冷えますね。

ありがたいことに、今ではスイッチひとつで暖かくなる時代ですが、かつては、炭火を入れて暖を取ったり湯を沸かしたりする火鉢が使われていました。日本の冬の風物詩として多くの家庭で使われていた暖房具である火鉢ですが、買取にお伺いする際によくお問い合わせいただくお品でもあります。

「押入れや倉庫から灰が入ったままの状態で見つかったけれど、どうしたらよいか？」そんなお声をよく伺いますので、今回は火鉢の捨て方や処分方法を簡単にご紹介いたします。

火鉢を処分する方法には、おおまかに以下の方法が考えられます。

１．ゴミとして処分する

２．ほかの家具としてリメイクする

３．買取業者で買い取ってもらう

１．ゴミとして処分する

火鉢を使用する予定がない場合は、不燃ゴミとして出せるため処分が簡単です。ただし、お住いの地域によっては、粗大ゴミとして処分しなければならない場合もありますので、確認が必要です。

火鉢を処分する際、火鉢に灰が入っている場合は、灰を取り出す必要があります。長年火鉢に灰が入ったままの場合は、「火箸で灰を突いてみる」「灰ならしで叩く」などすると固まった灰は崩れます。

もし石のように灰が硬い場合は、ハンマーなどで叩いて、硬い灰を崩してから取り出しましょう。

取り出した灰はふるいにかけて、ゴミやダマを取り除き、綺麗な状態畑や家庭菜園にまいて、肥料として使うこともできます。

２．ほかの家具としてリメイクする

ゴミとして処分することにためらう場合は、ほかの家具にリメイクして使用するのもひとつです。たとえば、長火鉢の炉の部分にガラス板やトレイを置いて蓋をすれば、ローテーブルになります。
ほかに、陶器製の火鉢の場合は、金魚鉢や蓮鉢、傘立てなどにリメイクできますが、火鉢は水を入れることを前提に作られていないため、水漏れを起こすことも多いです。とくに古い火鉢は、ひび割れや欠けから水漏れが起きることもありますので注意が必要です。

３．買取業者で買い取ってもらう

残念ながら、火鉢は骨董市場における需要があまり高くありませんが、一部のレトロ愛好家やコレクターに根強い人気はあります。
火鉢の買取価格は、素材や作家、美術的価値などで金額が変わることが多いです。重量感のある大きいサイズの火鉢でも気軽に相談できます。ただし、目立つひび割れや欠けがある場合、買取を断られるケースがあるため注意してください。

It’s cold again today.

Thankfully, we now live in an era where warmth is just a switch away. But in the past, people used hibachi—charcoal braziers—to keep warm and boil water. As a traditional Japanese winter fixture, hibachi were heating devices used in many homes. They’re also items we often get inquiries about when visiting for buybacks.

We often hear, “I found one in the closet or storage with ashes still inside—what should I do?” So this time, we’ll briefly introduce how to dispose of or get rid of a hibachi.

There are roughly the following methods for disposing of a hibachi:

1. Dispose of it as trash
2. Remodel it into other furniture
3. Have it bought by a dealer

1. Dispose of it as trash

If you have no plans to use the hibachi, disposal is straightforward as it can be placed out as non-combustible waste. However, depending on your local regulations, it may need to be disposed of as bulky waste, so verification is necessary.

When disposing of a hibachi containing ash, the ash must be removed first. If ash has been left inside for many years, try poking it with fire tongs or tapping it with an ash rake to break up any hardened ash.

If the ash is rock-hard, use a hammer to break it up before removal.

Sift the removed ash to remove debris and clumps. The clean ash can be spread over fields or home gardens as fertilizer.

2. Remake it into other furniture

If you hesitate to discard it as trash, remaking it into other furniture is another option. For example, placing a glass plate or tray over the fire pit section of a long hibachi and adding a lid creates a low table.
Additionally, ceramic hibachi can be repurposed as goldfish bowls, lotus planters, or umbrella stands. However, since hibachi aren’t designed to hold water, they often leak. Be especially cautious with older hibachi, as cracks or chips can cause leaks.

3. Selling to a Dealer

Unfortunately, fire bowls don’t command high demand in the antique market, though they retain a loyal following among some retro enthusiasts and collectors.
The purchase price for a fire bowl often varies based on materials, artist, and artistic value. Even large, heavy fire bowls can be easily discussed for sale. However, be aware that dealers may refuse to buy items with noticeable cracks or chips.

昨晩から冷え込んだ名古屋では、昨シーズンより31日早い初雪を観測し、冬の便りが届きました。

ようやく季節が暦に追いついたなと感じられるようになったところなのに、月日が経つのは早いもので、令和７年（2025年）も残すところあとわずかです。
残り少なくなったカレンダーは、いつの間にか予定で真っ黒に。うっかり風邪も引けないなと、気を引き締めるこの頃です。

年の瀬というものは、今年のうちに片づけてしまいたいこと、やっておきたいことが溜まりがちになります。その一つ一つをこなしていくのに忙しい年末ですが、新しい年に向けた準備をすることはちょっとワクワクする時間でもあります。

来年に向けた準備…色々あるかと思いますが、皆様は何か手を付けておられますか？
私は、ちょうど先日、来年のカレンダーを買ってきました。ここ数年は、「来年も元気でいてほしい」という気持ちを込めて、実家へもカレンダーを贈ることにしています。贈る際に、子どもたちの誕生日など、あらかじめ分かっている予定を書き込んで送るようにしたら、忘れなくてちょうどいいと喜ばれています。

以前は、さまざまなところからカレンダーをいただくことが多くありました。もはや年末年始の恒例行事と言っても過言ではないカレンダーの配布。あまりにも定番化していることもあって、そこまで気にはしていませんでしたが、よく考えてみれば、皆が足並みを揃えてカレンダーを小脇に抱えながら様々な取引先などへ渡し回るというこの習慣は独特なものに思えてきました。
実際、海外にはこのような習慣はほとんど無いようで、一部の外国の方からは「こんなにクオリティーの高いものをタダで配っているなんて！」という称賛の声もあるとか無いとか。

カレンダーを配るというこの習慣がいつから始まったのか、これについては「江戸時代に商人が年末の挨拶で使用した」「明治時代にとある呉服屋が始めた」「昭和に入り大阪のカレンダー会社が自社製品をアピールするために始めた」などなど諸説あるようですが、日本の年末の風物詩ですね。

いただきもののカレンダーは、残念ながら使用されないとそのまま廃棄されてしまうことも多く、環境への配慮などもあり「カレンダーを配る習慣を無くそう」という声から、最近ではその数も減ったように思います。飾るところがないなぁと申し訳なく思っていた私としては、ひとつ気がかりが減ってありがたい限りです。

新しいカレンダーを使うのは楽しみではありますが、何はともあれ、まずは残りの日々も健康に気を付けて、残り少ない今年のカレンダーに「今年もあと少し、よろしくね」という気持ちで、最後まで大切に使いきりたいと思います。

Nagoya recorded its first snowfall 31 days earlier than last season, bringing news of winter’s arrival.

Just as I began to feel the seasons finally catching up with the calendar, time has flown by, and only a little remains of Reiwa 7 (2025).
My dwindling calendar has suddenly filled with plans. These days, I find myself bracing myself, thinking I can’t afford to catch a cold.

The year’s end tends to pile up tasks we want to finish or things we want to get done before the year closes. While the busy year-end rush involves tackling each of these one by one, preparing for the new year is a time that feels a little exciting.

Preparations for the coming year… I imagine there are many things to consider. Have you started on any of yours yet?
I just bought my calendar for next year the other day. For the past few years, I’ve made it a point to send calendars to my parents’ house too, with the wish that they stay healthy next year. I’ve started filling in known events like the kids’ birthdays before sending them, and they’ve been happy with how easy it makes things.

In the past, I often received calendars from various places myself. Distributing calendars has practically become a standard year-end tradition. It’s so commonplace I didn’t think much of it, but upon reflection, this custom of everyone marching in lockstep, calendars tucked under their arms, visiting various business contacts to hand them out seems rather unique.
In fact, this custom seems almost nonexistent overseas. Some foreigners have reportedly praised it, saying things like, “How can you give away such high-quality items for free!”

As for when this calendar distribution custom began, there are various theories: “Merchants used them for year-end greetings in the Edo period,” “A certain kimono shop started it in the Meiji era,” or “A calendar company in Osaka began it in the Showa era to promote their products.”

Unfortunately, many received calendars end up discarded unused, and with growing environmental concerns, calls to “end the calendar distribution custom” have led to a noticeable decrease in recent years. As someone who always felt bad about not having space to display them, I’m truly grateful for this trend.

While I look forward to using a new calendar, first and foremost, I want to take care of my health for the remaining days. I plan to treasure and use up the last few pages of this year’s calendar with the feeling of “Just a little more to go this year, let’s make it count.”

先日、出張買取に伺ったお宅で、「こんなものも買い取ってもらえるのですね」というお声がありました。

お片付けなどをしていると、どのような品が査定してもらえるのか、なかなか判断が難しいですよね。

先日伺ったお宅では掛軸や茶碗などの査定をご希望で、拝見させていただいておりましたが、他にも引き出しなどから色々なものが出てくるので大変だとのことで、そちらも見せていただくことに。

箪笥に眠っていた「勲章」が買取可能だとお伝えすると、「これも買取してもらえるのですか？」と驚いていらっしゃいました。他にも何点か買取可能な品物があり、お客様にはかなり意外だったようです。

掛軸、茶碗、絵画といった分かりやすい骨董古美術品の他にも買取可能なお品もございますので、いくつかご紹介したいと思います。

１．勲章

瑞宝章、旭日章などの勲章などが一般的ですが、他にも希少性のある勲章が引出しに眠っているかもしれませんので、処分をお考えでしたら一度査定してもらうことをお勧めします。勲章がご本人のものではなくても買取可能です。

２，古い写真

戦前、戦中の古い写真は、これからの時代に残す戦争資料として貴重なものとされています。

状態が良くなくとも高い評価がつく可能性があります。

３，古地図、鳥瞰図

現在、様々な場面で古地図の価値が見直されております。

鳥瞰図（ちょうかんず）は平面図とは違い、鳥の目から見たような、斜め上空から立体的に見下ろしたように描かれた図です。

４，鉄道模型、鉄道グッズ

NゲージやHOゲージの鉄道模型や、行先版なども買取可能です。

The other day, during a home appraisal visit, a client remarked, “I didn’t realize you could buy things like this.”

When decluttering, it can be quite difficult to judge what items might be appraised, right?

While I was examining items like hanging scrolls and tea bowls as requested, the homeowner mentioned how overwhelming it was to find so many other things in drawers and elsewhere, so I agreed to take a look at those too.

When I told them the “medal” tucked away in a chest of drawers was eligible for purchase, they were surprised, asking, “You can buy this too?” There were several other items we could purchase, which seemed quite unexpected to the customer.

Beyond obvious antiques like hanging scrolls, tea bowls, and paintings, we can also purchase other items. Here are a few examples:

1. Medals
While medals like the Order of the Sacred Treasure or the Order of the Rising Sun are common, you might find rare medals tucked away in a drawer. If you discover any, we recommend having them appraised. We can purchase medals even if they weren’t awarded to the owner.

2. Old Photographs

Pre-war and wartime photographs are considered valuable historical materials for future generations.

Even if the condition isn’t perfect, they may still receive a high appraisal.

3. Old Maps, Bird’s-Eye Views

The value of old maps is being reevaluated in various contexts today.

Bird’s-eye views differ from flat maps; they depict scenes as seen from a bird’s eye, looking down diagonally from above in a three-dimensional perspective.

4. Model Trains and Railway Memorabilia

We purchase N-gauge and HO-gauge model trains, destination signs, and related items.

Even without boxes or cases, items from standard manufacturers like Tenshodo, Tomix, KATO, and Micro Ace are acceptable for purchase.

5. Cameras

While smartphones can capture almost anything today, photos taken with vintage cameras possess a unique charm and maintain enduring popularity.

先日の黄砂のため、家の窓が随分汚れていると気が付きまして。

12月に入ったことだし、そろそろ大掃除もどきでもはじめようか…などと思い始めましたのですが、みなさまは年末の大掃除はやる派？やらない派でしょうか。

かつての実家もそうだったのですが、掃除といえば1年を締めくくるのに不可欠な年末の行事くらいの勢いで、朝から家族総出で窓や床をピカピカに磨き、障子を張り替えて、最後はしめ飾りとお鏡餅を整えて清らかな新年を迎えるために精を出したものです。

時は移り、生活様式やお掃除グッズなどの変化に伴って掃除時間はグンと短縮され、今や「とくに大掃除はしない」という家庭も珍しくないのでしょうか。

それにしても大昔の縄文時代なんてたぶん大掃除なんてなかったでしょう。年末の大掃除なんていつから何により始まったのか気になってきたのですが、やはり大掃除は「煤払い」が原型のようでして、新年を迎えるために家を清める宗教的な行事のようでした。

宮中から始まり、江戸時代には12月13日が「煤納め」と定められ、江戸城での煤払いが庶民にも広まりました。また、現代でも神社仏閣などではこの日に煤払いの行事が残っています。当時の大掃除は「煤払い」が主で、掃除道具は主に棕櫚（しゅろ）や竹のほうきが使われ、ほうきは神聖なものとされていたようです。さらには掃除が終わると家の中で胴上げをする風習もあったそうで、それはそれは一大イベントだったようですね。

そういえば家の中で「ほうき」を使って大掃除なんて気付けばなくなっていましたが、大掃除を神事として一大イベントににしてしまうのもそれはそれで面白そうなので、（胴上げは無理としても）今年は大掃除の後に万歳三唱でもして億劫な大掃除を一大イベントごとにしてしまおうかな笑。ばんざーい。

The other day, I noticed my windows were quite dirty due to the yellow sand.

Since December has arrived, I started thinking maybe it’s time to begin something resembling a big cleaning… But are you all the type to do a year-end deep clean? Or not?

Back at my parents’ house, cleaning was treated like an essential year-end ritual to wrap up the year. The whole family would gather early in the morning, polishing windows and floors until they sparkled, replacing shoji paper, and finally arranging the New Year’s decorations and kagami mochi to welcome a pure new year.

Times have changed, and with shifts in lifestyles and cleaning tools, the time spent cleaning has drastically shortened. Nowadays, it’s probably not uncommon to find households that “don’t really do a big year-end cleaning.”

Even so, back in ancient Jomon times, there probably wasn’t any big cleaning at all. I started wondering when and why year-end cleaning began. It seems the original form was “soot sweeping,” a religious ritual to purify the home for the New Year.

It started at the imperial court, and by the Edo period, December 13th was designated as “soot-sweeping day.” The practice spread from Edo Castle to the common people. Even today, shrines and temples retain this soot-clearing ritual on that day. Back then, the main focus was “soot-clearing,” using brooms made of palm or bamboo, which were considered sacred. Furthermore, there was a custom of lifting people up in celebration inside the house after cleaning—it sounds like it was quite the major event.

Come to think of it, I haven’t used a broom for a big clean at home in ages. But turning the big clean into a major event, like a sacred ritual, sounds kind of fun. (Even if a human pyramid is out of the question), maybe this year after cleaning, I’ll shout “banzai” three times and turn this tedious chore into a big event! Haha. Banzai!
