先日、オルセー美術館所蔵作品を楽しんできました。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

今回は主にオルセー美術館の作品が多数展示されていたのですが、パリのアトリエに集うドガ、マネ、セザンヌ、モネ、ルノワール、バルトロメなどなど美術の教科書で一度は耳にしたことのある作家の作品100点が一堂に来日。

 

 

 

 

印象派といえば、移ろう光と共にとらえた戸外の作品を思い浮かべてしまうのですが（たとえばモネの睡蓮などの作品などを思い浮かべがちでしょうか…）、今回の作品は戸外の光だけではない室内の印象派の魅力が伝わる作品が多く展示されています。

 

「室内」ですので、当時のパリの生活様式などもそうなのですが、鋭い人間観察も伝わってくる心理劇の一画のような作品も多くあり、一作一作の人の表情、周りの持ち物、家具、背景などなどどれも丁寧に紐解きたくなる作品が多くとても面白かったです。

 

今回初来日作品、ドガの《家族の肖像（ベレッリ家）》はそれがとても特徴的でして、

作品を見ると、一般的な肖像画…と思える反面、なんだか冷たい違和感がします。左側に固まっている3人の女性と子供に対し、右側の男性の存在感も背を向けてなにやら表情が…。

 

 

 

実はこの『ベレッリ家』は、家族の「つながり」と「不和」を巧みに表現した作品のようです。

ドガはイタリアでの修業を経て、叔母ローラとその家族を描いているのですが、作品を一目見ると、中央の女性の厳格で凛々しい表情が印象に残ります。この人物こそがドガの叔母ローラです。

 

ローラが着ている象徴的なドレスには最近亡くなった父（ドガの祖父）を悼む意味が込められており、いわゆる「喪中」の状態。固く厳しいローラの表情には、その悲しみや亡き父への思いを視覚的に表現する効果があるようです。また、彼女の後ろに目を向けると、額装された肖像画には亡き父の存在が暗示されていることがわかります。背景に飾られたローラの父の絵は、家族の絆と歴史的背景を巧みに絡めているようですね。

 

ほかにも、ドガが描いた家族構成員の表情やポーズもそれぞれの性格や関係性がくみ取れます。

ローラの厳格さに対して、彼女の夫である男爵は背を向けた姿勢で家族との距離感を感じさせるポーズをとっていて、これは彼が家族と親しい関係ではなく、反対にビジネスや外部世界との関わりが強かったことを示唆しています。

そう、ベレッリ家は、あまりうまくいっていない家族だったのです。

 

パッと見ると単純な家族肖像画に見えるのですが、注意して一人ひとりの姿勢や表情からいろいろ紐解いていくと、家族の状況がいろいろと見えてきますね。ドガが家族の一瞬を捉えながらも、その背後にある深い感情や関係性を丁寧に描写した作品といえます。

 

 

こんな風に一枚一枚紐解きながらいろいろな作品を見ていくと、すっかり時間が経っていしまったのですが…。

写真などなかった時代に、この一瞬を逃すまいと狙って描いた画家たちの集中力と意気込みも一緒に伝わってくるようで、観る側もいろいろ見つけはクスっと笑たりといろいろ忙しくあっという間の時間でありました。

The other day, I enjoyed viewing works from the Musée d’Orsay collection.

This time, the exhibition primarily featured numerous pieces from the Musée d’Orsay. A total of 100 works by artists like Degas, Manet, Cézanne, Monet, Renoir, and Bartholet—names familiar from art textbooks—who gathered in Parisian studios, came together for this special visit to Japan.

 

When we think of Impressionism, we often picture outdoor works capturing fleeting light (perhaps works like Monet’s Water Lilies come to mind…). However, this exhibition featured many pieces showcasing the charm of Impressionism indoors, not just the light of the outdoors.

Because they are “indoor” scenes, they offer glimpses into Parisian lifestyle at the time, but many also feel like scenes from psychological dramas, conveying sharp observations of human nature. Each piece invites careful examination of the subjects’ expressions, their belongings, the furniture, the backgrounds—every detail is fascinating.

 

Degas’s Portrait of the Bellelli Family, making its first appearance in Japan, is particularly distinctive.

 

At first glance, it seems like a typical portrait… yet it carries a peculiar, cold sense of dissonance. While the three women huddle tightly on the left, the man on the right, turned away, seems oddly faint and lacking presence…

In fact, this ‘Berelli Family’ is a work that skillfully expresses both the “bond” and the “discord” within the family.

 

After training in Italy, Degas painted his aunt Laura and her family. At first glance, the stern, dignified expression of the woman in the center leaves a strong impression. This figure is Degas’s aunt Laura.

 

The symbolic dress Laura wears signifies mourning for her recently deceased father (Degas’s grandfather), indicating she is in a state of mourning. Laura’s stern, rigid expression seems to visually convey her sorrow and thoughts of her late father. Furthermore, looking behind her, the framed portrait suggests the presence of her deceased father. The painting of Laura’s father displayed in the background skillfully intertwines family bonds and historical context.

 

Furthermore, the expressions and poses of the family members Degas painted reveal their individual personalities and relationships. In contrast to Laura’s strictness, her husband, the Baron, adopts a pose with his back turned, suggesting a sense of distance from his family. This implies he was not close to his family, but rather had stronger ties to business and the outside world.

 

Yes, the Bellelli family was not a particularly harmonious one.

At first glance, it appears to be a simple family portrait. Yet, upon closer examination of each individual’s posture and expression, the family’s circumstances gradually come into focus.

It can be said that Degas captured a fleeting moment within the family while meticulously depicting the deep emotions and relationships underlying it.

 

 

 

 

As I examined each piece this way, unraveling its layers, time slipped away completely…

In an era without photography, the artists’ intense focus and determination to capture this fleeting moment come through. For the viewer, it’s a momentary experience filled with discoveries and quiet chuckles.
