昨年の母の日に、お花屋さんで微笑ましい光景を目にしました。小さい男の子２人を連れたお父さんが、カーネーションを熱心に選んでいるのです。最近のカーネーションはあまりにも様々な色があり、私もその親子と一緒にしばらく悩んでいました。

母が好きなのはたぶんこれだなと私が決めた頃、隣のお父さんはまだ決めかねているようでした。しびれを切らしたお兄ちゃんの方が「お母さんに電話して聞こうよー！何色がいいか聞こうよー！」と言い出しました。確かにその方が合理的と私も思いましたが、お父さんはぐずる子供たちをよそに店内をぐるぐる。その真剣に悩み続けるお父さんの姿を見ていると、だんだん愛おしく思えてまいりました。

 

 

 

プレゼントは贈られること自体嬉しいものですが、贈る人を思って悩む時間もプレゼントなのですね。ぐるぐる回るお父さんの姿をお母さんに動画で送ってあげたいほどでした。子どもたちが大人になった時、花屋で悩みまくっていたお父さんの姿をふと思い起こす日が来るのでしょうか。あれは愛情だったのだなと感じるか、いややっぱりさっさと聞くべきでしょ、と思うかそれもまた楽しみです。

私が会計を済ませて店を出る時もまだ悩んでいらっしゃいましたので、何色のカーネーションが選ばれたのかは定かではありません。

 

 

さて話は変わりますが、昨日久しぶりにメジャーリーグのドジャース戦をフルで観戦しました。佐々木朗希投手が登板するということで、母のような気持ちで観ておりました。残念ながら５回途中で交代となり勝利投手の権利はなくなりました。せめて５回が終わるまで投げさせてくれても…と思う親心（親ではないのですが）。ドジャースの投手になるだけでも十分親孝行ですが、勝負事の世界ですので、もし自分の息子だったら心休まる日が無いかもしれませんね。

 

昨日の試合は、両チーム合わせて２５得点という乱打戦、しかもシーソーゲームで目が離せませんでした。相手チームのダイアモンドバックスも個性的なスター選手が多くこれぞメジャーという印象。そんな強者揃いの中で、すんとすました愛くるしい表情で（失礼でしょうか？）輝きを放つ大谷翔平選手。

３－３の同点で迎えた３回、ノーアウト満塁のチャンスに打席が回ってきた大谷選手に期待が高まりましたが三振。ホームラン数は順調に伸びているものの打点が少ないと言われている大谷選手なので、満塁ホームランをと期待した人も多かったでしょうが、この三振すら９回のお膳立てだったのでは思うほどの劇的なエンディングでした。

 

９回表に入る時点で８－１１と３点のリードを許していたドジャースですが、連続ヒットにより、あっという間に１１－１１の同点。そしてランナーを１、２塁に置き打席が回ってくる大谷選手。ここで打席が回ってくるという運もスターの素質のひとつなのかもと思わせる演出ぶり。大歓声の中、バッターボックスにゆっくりと入る姿はもはや映画ですか？と疑いたくなります。そして４球目を豪快に振り抜き、右中間への特大のホームラン。飛距離は１２９．８メートル。

打った瞬間、凄い！打ったー！叫ぶより、えっ嘘でしょ、と呟いている自分がおりました。期待はしていましたが現実とは思えない光景を飲み込めない状態とでもいいましょうか。打った瞬間、本人もスタンドの観客もホームランを確信しほぼ全ての人がバンザイ状態で、ホームグラウンドのような盛り上がりよう。歓声の渦の中を一人悠々とベースを回るという人生で一度あればいいのではないかという幸福な瞬間、大谷選手は今年も何度も味わうのでしょうね。

大谷選手のお母さんて毎日どんな気持ちで過ごしているのだろう…。想像しても分かるはずもありませんでした。

On Mother’s Day last year, I saw a funny scene at a flower shop. A father with two small boys was eagerly choosing carnations. There are so many different colors of carnations these days, and I was wondering for a while along with the father and the boys.

When I decided that my mother would probably like this one, the father next to me was still undecided. My brother, who was getting impatient, said, “Let’s call your mother and ask her! Let’s ask her what color she likes! He said, “Let’s call your mother and ask her what color you want! I thought it would be more reasonable, but the father continued to walk around the store, leaving the rest of the children to fret. Watching the father earnestly worrying, I began to love him more and more.

Gifts are a joy to receive, but the time spent worrying about the gift is also a gift. I wanted to send a video of my father spinning around and around to my mother. I wonder if the day will come when the children grow up and suddenly remember the image of their father worrying over the gift at the flower shop. I am looking forward to seeing whether they will feel that it was a sign of love, or whether they will think that they should have listened to him sooner rather than later.

When I paid the bill and left the store, he was still wondering what color carnation he had chosen, so I am not sure what color carnation he chose.

 

On a different note, yesterday I watched a full Major League Baseball game against the Dodgers for the first time in a while. I watched the game as if I were a mother, because Akinori Sasaki was pitching. Unfortunately, he was replaced in the middle of the 5th inning and lost his right to be the winning pitcher. I felt like a parent (but I am not a parent) who wished they would have at least let him pitch until the end of the 5th inning. Just being a pitcher for the Dodgers is enough to show filial piety, but it is a world of competition, so if it were my son, I might not have a day to rest.

Yesterday’s game was a slugfest with both teams scoring a combined 25 runs, and it was a seesaw game that I couldn’t take my eyes off the game. The other team, the Diamondbacks, had many unique star players, giving the impression of a major league team. Amongst such a strong lineup, Sho Ohtani shined with a cool and charming expression (or was that rude?). Shohei Ohtani shines brightly.

With the score tied 3-3 in the third inning and the bases loaded with no outs, expectations were high for Otani, but he struck out. Many people may have expected him to hit a grand slam home run, but the ending was so dramatic that even this strikeout may have been a set-up for the 9th inning.

 

The Dodgers had allowed three runs to score, 8-11, entering the top of the 9th inning, but consecutive hits quickly tied the score at 11-11. Then, with runners on first and second, Ohtani came around to bat. The way he was directing the game made us think that luck might be one of the qualities of a star. The sight of him slowly entering the batter’s box amidst the cheers of the crowd made me wonder if this was a movie. I was wondering if it was a movie. Then, he swung at the fourth pitch and hit an oversized home run to right center field. The distance was 129.8 meters.

 

The moment I hit it, it was awesome! I hit it! Rather than exclaiming, I found myself muttering, “What a lie! I had been expecting it, but I couldn’t take in the sight that didn’t seem real. The moment he hit the ball, both he and the spectators in the stands were convinced that it was a home run, and almost everyone was in a banzai state, as if it were their home ground. It was a happy moment that Otani must have experienced many times this year as well, as he rounded the bases in the midst of a whirlpool of cheers, which is something you only need to experience once in your life.

I wonder how Ohtani’s mother feels every day…. I couldn’t possibly know even if I tried to imagine it.

I guess I got a little too passionate. My apologies.
