今朝は冷え込みましたね。明日明後日の方が冷え込むようですので、風邪などひかぬよう温かくしてお過ごしください。

 

テレビやネットニュースでは、今回の大寒波の特集で賑わっていますが、そもそも「寒波」とは何なのでしょうか。「寒波」と似たような言葉で「寒気」がありますが、寒波とはどのような違いがあるのでしょうか。気になったので調べてみました。

「寒波」とは、常に気温の低い寒冷な空気が広い範囲に流れ出して、ある地域で気温が急激に下がる現象をいいます。高緯度の寒気団が、まるで波が伝わるように流れ出ることから名付けられたようです。規模の大きい寒波は「大寒波」と表現されることもあります。

寒波が流れ込むと、1日に10〜20℃程度低下して、暴風雨や大雪を伴うこともあります。通常の寒波であれば1〜2日で冷え込みが弱まりますが、大寒波の場合は数週間続くことも少なくないようです。

では「寒気」と「寒波」の違いは何なのでしょうか。その違いは、どの程度長く気温の低下が続くかにあるようです。
寒気は寒さの程度を表し、一時的なもので、寒さの影響も寒波ほど長引かず、短期集中的に寒くなることを言うようです。

 

また、テレビやネットニュースを見ていると、「10年に一度の寒気」などよく耳にします。今回の大寒波もそうですが、いったい何回くるんだ？と疑問に思うことも。

 

テレビなどでこのように表現される頻度は「10年に一度」とは限らないようですが、何を根拠に「10年に一度」なのでしょう。

テレビなどで報じられている「10年に一度」という予想は、気象庁の「早期天候情報」が元になっていることが多いようです。この情報は、6日先以降の5日間降雪量（または気温）の予測について、ある基準に達したときに発表されます。

その基準は「その地域・時期としては10年に1度程度しか起きないような顕著に多い降雪量（顕著な高温／低温）となる可能性が30％以上と予想された場合」となっています。

 

少々ややこしいですが、つまり、何度も「10年に一度」と聞くな…と思っておりましたが、頻度は10年に一度だけではないということですね。

寒波はこれからです。冷えないように首、手首、足首を温めて乗り切りましょう。

The TV and Internet news are full of features on this cold wave, but what is a “cold wave” anyway? A similar word to “cold wave” is “chilly air,” but what is the difference between it and a cold wave? I was curious, so I looked it up.

A cold wave is a phenomenon in which cold air, which is always cold, flows out over a wide area, causing a sudden drop in temperature in a certain region. The name “cold wave” is derived from the fact that cold air masses at high latitudes flow out like a propagating wave. A cold wave of large scale is sometimes described as a “major cold wave.

When a cold wave moves in, the temperature drops by 10 to 20°C per day and may be accompanied by storms and heavy snowfall. In the case of a normal cold wave, the coldness weakens within a day or two, but in the case of a major cold wave, it often lasts for several weeks.

So what is the difference between a “cold spell” and a “cold wave”? The difference seems to lie in how long the temperature drop lasts.
A cold spell describes the degree of coldness, and it seems to be temporary, and the effects of the cold weather are not as prolonged as a cold wave, but are more concentrated and cold for a short period of time.

 

Also, when watching TV or online news, we often hear such phrases as “once-in-a-decade cold wave. This cold wave is no exception, but how many times is it going to happen? How many times is this going to happen?

 

It seems that the frequency of such expressions on TV and other media is not always “once in 10 years,” but on what basis is it “once in 10 years”?

The “once-in-a-decade” forecasts reported on TV and other media are often based on “early weather information” from the Japan Meteorological Agency. This information is released when a certain criterion is reached regarding the forecast of snowfall (or temperature) for the next five days.

The criterion is that “there is a 30% or greater chance of significantly heavy snowfall (significantly high/low temperatures), which occurs only once every 10 years or so for the area/period in question.

 

It is a bit complicated. In other words, we have been thinking, “Don’t hear “once every 10 years” so many times…but it means that the frequency is not only once every 10 years.

The cold wave is just beginning. Warm your neck, wrists, and ankles to avoid getting cold.
