このところの湿気と暑さで間違いなく水分を採る量が増えて、顔がむくんでいたりするのですが…。これは命を守るため…多少は致し方ないとげんなりしながら、今朝も顔を洗ったのですが、きっと今日も水分をたくさん採るのでしょうね、わたし。

 

そんな暑さと湿気をちょっとだけ忘れさせてくれるようなグラスが。

 

「ウランガラス」

 

 

 

先日から、気になってしょうがなかったウランガラス。「ウラン」て、そうあの「ウラン」なのですが、原子力発電の燃料に使われる天然資源のこと。原子番号92の元素でして、記号ではUと表示され、天然元素の中では原子番号が最も大きい元素であります。

 

「ウラン」と聞きますと、あの原子力発電に使っているほうで、なぜにウランガラスなんだ？と、思われるかもしれませんが、当初のウランの利用法はなんと美しいガラスでありました。ウランガラスとは、着色剤として少量のウランを混ぜて作った緑黄色のガラスでありました。そのウランが発見されたのが今から２００年前なのですが、その後ウランの黄色いことを利用してガラスの着色に利用されるようになります。

 

そんなウランガラスは１８３０年代にチェコで発明され、欧米に広がり工芸品や食器などが大量に作られるようになります。ウランガラスの最大の特徴は、紫外線を当てると緑色蛍光を出すこと。よくわからないのですが、原子レベルでは ウランのまわりをまわっている電子が励起されて、それがまた元に戻るときに、エネルギーが放出されて発光するという現象のようです。

 

ですがどう説明しましても、これで水分をとったりお酒を飲んだりするのか？…汗。と、少々焦るかと思いますが、ウランガラスに含まれているウランは通常０．１％から１％程度で、ウランの放射能はごくわずか。自然界には地球や宇宙からの放射能も飛んでおりますし、人体のカリウムからも放射能を出しているのですから、ウランガラスの放射能については心配ないレベルのようでございます。そもそもウランガラスのウランは、ガラスに閉じ込められていますので、外に出ることはございませんよ。

 

しかしウランガラスなどの着色剤として使用されたウランは、第二次世界大戦中にガラス等への利用が禁止され一気に衰退。戦後利用禁止が説かれましたが、ウラン製造を再開したのはアメリカ、チェコなど数か国、数社にとどまります。したがって現存するウランガラスの製品は殆どが骨董となるのです。

 

ちょっと頼りない光ですが、お店のウランガラスで試してみましょう。

 

 

 

お分かりいただけますでしょうか。

こちらは、大正昭和初期に作られた日本製の酒器。和ガラスの控えめな形やその印象に、この不思議なネオカラーの緑が暗闇に浮かび上がるのですから、当時初めてご覧になった方はそれはそれはみなさん驚いたことでしょうね。ですが、これはこれでマッチしているように思えます。

当時の日本においてこの発色が受け入れられていたことにも驚くのですが、不思議な色のガラスを眺めながら新しい時代に胸躍らせていた当時の人々の姿を想像し、さっきから私もガン見み。この不思議な緑に魅了され、当時の人々もこんな風ににただただ眺めていたのでしょうか。

 

当時日本では、明治に西欧から近代ガラスの製造技術が投入され後に、色彩豊かな氷コップなど日本の独自色が現われるのですが、ウランガラスもその一つでありました。ですが、日本でも大正期からウランの一般使用が禁止される昭和初期のほんの短い間にしか製造されませんでしたので、日本製のウランガラスももちろん骨董でしか存在いたしません。

 

それにしても少々喉が渇いてきました。その数奇な運命と魅了してやまない緑の輝きの中に、何を注ごうか…。そちらも気になってまいりましたので、ガン見はこのあたりといたします。

Radioactivity from the earth and space is also flying to the natural world, and since potassium in the human body also emits radioactivity, it seems that there is no need to worry about the radioactivity of uranium glass. In the first place, uranium in uranium glass is trapped in the glass, so you won’t go outside.

 

However, uranium, which was used as a colorant for uranium glass, was banned from being used for glass during World War II and declined at once. Although it was said that the use of uranium was prohibited after the war, only a few countries and companies such as the United States and the Czech Republic have resumed uranium production.
