こんにちは。今日は雨が降ったり止んだりとはっきりしない空模様の名古屋ですが、

その晴れ間をぬって犬の散歩をなさっている方々が、お店の前を行き来しています。

 

 

犬と言えば、風光舎名古屋店にも凄い犬がおります。（笑）

店内に入るとひときわ目がいく置物、それが、鎌倉時代に作られた木製の狛犬です。

白目の部分が未だに金色に輝き、その眼光の鋭いことといったら、魔物が入り込む隙などないくらいです。

風光舎の守り神と言っても過言ではありませんね。

 

この狛犬。鎌倉時代から今まで、何百年と時を越えてそこにいる人々を守ってきてくれたのだと思います。

朱で塗られていたであろう色はだいぶ剥げてはおりますが、ところどころに残る皮膚の名残のようなものは、

時代を感じさせてくれます。戦乱の世の中を幾度となく越えてきたのでしょうし、木造の建物ばかりだったこの日本で

よくぞ火事にもあわずに残ってくれましたね、と感謝せずにはいられません。

 

 

 

 

そんな狛犬ですが、その歴史を紐解いていくと、日本に伝わったのは遣唐使からだと言われています。

中國で、皇帝の守護獣として獅子像が定着し、その思想を遣唐使が宮中に持ち込んだようです。

しかし、日本に持ち込まれた後、一対の獅子像はやがて日本独自の「獅子・狛犬」という形式に変わりました。向かって右側が獅子、

左側が狛犬。獅子は黄色で口を開け角はなし。狛犬は白色で口を閉じ、角がある、というものです。

この「阿吽（あうん）」形式はおそらく寺の山門を守る仁王像の阿吽などとおなじで仏教の影響を受けたもののようです。

このような日本独特の「狛犬」は平安時代後期頃に始まりました。これには、「左近の桜　右近の橘」のように、

アシンメトリー（左右非対称）配列を好む日本人独特の美感覚が関係していたようです。なんとなくわかりますよね。

そして時代は過ぎ、いつしか狛犬に角がなくなり、口元以外は同じような狛犬の姿に変化してきました。

 

 

 

 

ところで、私たちが普段見かける神社の境内の狛犬は、ほとんどが石でできていますね。だから、木製のものは大変珍しく感じます。

でも、古い時代の狛犬は、ほとんどが木製だったようです。というのも、平安、鎌倉という古い時代は、神社やお寺で

狛犬が置かれた場所といえば、門やお堂の中、つまり屋内だったからです。建物やそこにまつられる神像・仏像が日本では

ほとんどが木製だったので、必然的にそこに置かれる狛犬も木でつくられたようです。今のように石像になったのは

もっと時代が後になってからのようですね。石像しか見たことがない私にとっては、驚くことばかりです。

 

 

 

この狛犬の目から見た日本の景色や人々はいったい、どのように変わったのでしょうね。

幾度となく時代の変わり目を見てきたこの狛犬と話せたのなら、私たちはいったい何といわれるのでしょうか。

Although it is such a guardian dog, it is said that it was the envoy to Tang that was introduced to Japan when we unravel its history.

In China, the lion statue was established as the guardian beast of the emperor, and it seems that the envoy to Tang brought the idea to the palace.

However, after being brought to Japan, the pair of lion statues eventually changed to Japan’s unique “lion / guardian dog” format.

The lion is on the right and the guardian dog is on the left.

The lion is yellow with an open mouth and no horns. The guardian dog is white, has a closed mouth, and has horns.

This “Aun” style is probably influenced by Buddhism in the same way as the statue of Nio, who protects the temple gate.

Such “Komainu” peculiar to Japan started around the latter half of the Heian period. This includes, like “Sakon-no-Sakura, Ukon-no-Tachibana”.

It seems that the aesthetic sense peculiar to Japanese people who prefer asymmetrical arrangement was related. You can understand it somehow.

And the times have passed, and the guardian dogs have lost their horns, and they have changed to the same guardian dogs except for their mouths.

 

By the way, most of the guardian dogs in the shrine precincts that we usually see are made of stone. Therefore, wooden ones feel very rare.
