ひと昔前の夏の北海道といえば避暑地として憧れの場所でしたが、ここ数年は猛暑に見舞われ、本日も道東などでは４０℃に近づく暑さとなるようです。沖縄よりも暑いとは…にわかには信じられません。

北海道は学生時代の夏に初めて訪れ、雄大な景色といい人の温かさといい今でも忘れられない土地です。その頃は「半袖を着るのは２週間くらいだから数枚しか持っていない」という地元の人の話に驚いたものです。

 

この酷暑の中、道内の小中学校ではまだ夏休みに入っていないところもあり、エアコンの設置が急ピッチで進められているようです。北海道では小中学校のエアコンが設置率が他府県に比べ低いのだとか。

そういえば三重県の両親の実家も昔はエアコンなしでもひんやりと涼しく、畳の上に皆で雑魚寝して昼寝をしていました。そこも今では３８℃を超える日もありエアコンなしでは過ごせません。自然の風に揺れる風鈴の音を聴きながらウトウトした記憶はこの上なく贅沢な時間となってしまいました。

 

北海道はここ６年ほど酷暑となっており、慣れない暑さに対処するのは大変なことでしょう。温暖化が進み全国的に気温が上がってはいますが、北海道の気温上昇のスピードは他の地域に比べて速くなっているということです。

都市化によるヒートアイランド現象なども要因として挙げられていますが、他にも温暖化により雪の量が減りむき出しになった地面に太陽の熱が吸収されることにより気温が上がりやすいのだとか。気温の上昇によりさらに温暖化が進み、雪が減るという悪循環に陥っているとのこと。

 

雪や氷の減少は世界的にも深刻で北極やシベリアなどで深刻な問題となっています。北極の氷は２１世紀末には夏の間はほぼなくなってしまうと予想されているそうです。そのため地球の北からの寒気の影響を受ける北海道は急速に温暖化が進んでしまうことになります。

北海道はパウダースノーと呼ばれるサラサラの雪が人気で、海外からも多くのスキー観光客が訪れています。他に類を見ない上質の雪に感動するそうです。私も一度だけ経験しましたが、膝のあたりまで雪に埋まっているのに何の抵抗もなく、まるで雪などないかのように進んでいく感覚が不思議でたまりませんでした。パウダースノーという名に偽りなしです。そんな貴重な雪も少なくなってしまうのかと思うと悲しくなります。

 

雪も最高ですが、学生時代に友人と訪れた夏の北海道も素晴らしく、特に人の温かさと親しみやすさが私には衝撃でした。

美瑛町などをタクシーで一日案内してくれた武田鉄矢似の運転手さん、今でいう「映えスポット」に連れて行ってくれ、「はいここに立って！」「ポーズはこれで！」など次々と写真を撮ってくれ、用意してくれたお弁当を広大な景色の中で食べる間、松山千春の「大空と大地の中で」をラジカセで大音量で流してくれました（笑）。

海岸で夕日を眺めていたらウニ漁船のおじさんが船に乗せてくれ、夕日の中を漁船でクルーズしながら獲れたてのウニを「食べろ食べと」とパカパカ開けてくれるので遠慮なく食べまくりました。あんなにウニを食べたのは後にも先にもありません。

電車の中で話した幼稚園くらいの男の子は同じ駅で降りたあと、私たちが泊まる宿に、お母さんと一緒に湯でたての大量のトウモロコシをもってきてくれました。

北海道大学を見学していたら、個性的な大学教授が大学の秘密のスポットを案内してくれ、変な写真をたくさん撮りました。なんだかアルバムを見返したくなってきました。

 

挙げればきりがないのですが、北海道では会う人会う人あまり経験したことがないほど人懐っこく、景色を楽しむだけではない貴重な経験でした。何十年も前の数日間の旅行でしたが、こんなにも鮮明に思い出せる自分に驚きです。

 

温暖化の話からいつものごとく随分話題がそれました。失礼しました。

A long time ago, Hokkaido in the summer was a favorite place to escape from the heat, but in the past few years it has been hit by a heat wave, and today, in the eastern part of Hokkaido, the temperature is expected to approach 40°C. It is hard to believe that it is hotter than Okinawa…. It is hard to believe that it is hotter than Okinawa.

I visited Hokkaido for the first time in the summer when I was a student, and I still cannot forget the magnificent scenery and the warmth of the people. At that time, I was surprised to hear locals say that they only had a few short sleeves because they would only wear them for about two weeks.

 

In this extremely hot summer, some elementary and junior high schools in Hokkaido have not yet started summer vacation, and the installation of air conditioners seems to be proceeding at a rapid pace. I heard that the installation rate of air conditioners in elementary and junior high schools in Hokkaido is lower than in other prefectures.

Come to think of it, my parents’ home in Mie Prefecture used to be cool without air conditioning, and we all used to take naps together on the tatami mats. Nowadays, however, the temperature there can be over 38 degrees Celsius, and it is impossible to spend a day without air conditioning. The memory of falling asleep listening to the sound of wind chimes swaying in the natural breeze has become the most luxurious time of the year.

 

Hokkaido has been experiencing extreme heat for the past six years, and it must be difficult to cope with the unaccustomed heat. Although global warming is progressing and temperatures are rising nationwide, Hokkaido’s temperatures are rising faster than in other regions.

The heat island effect caused by urbanization has been cited as a factor, but another factor is that the amount of snow has decreased due to global warming, and the sun’s heat is absorbed by the bare ground, causing the temperature to rise more easily. The rise in temperature is causing further global warming, which in turn is causing less snow, creating a vicious cycle.

 

The decrease in snow and ice is serious worldwide and is a serious problem in the Arctic and Siberia. The Arctic ice is expected to be almost gone by the end of the 21st century during the summer months. Therefore, Hokkaido, which is affected by cold air from the Earth’s north, will experience rapid global warming.

Hokkaido is popular for its smooth snow, known as powder snow, which attracts many ski tourists from overseas. They are impressed by the unparalleled quality of the snow. I experienced it once myself, and it was a strange feeling to be knee-deep in snow without any resistance, as if there was no snow at all. The name “powder snow” is true. It makes me sad to think that such precious snow will become scarce.

 

Snow is great, but Hokkaido in the summer when I visited there with my friends as a student was also wonderful, especially the warmth and friendliness of the people.

The driver, who looked like Tetsuya Takeda, took us on a one-day cab tour of Biei-cho and other places, took us to what we would now call “Eiyoe spots,” and told us to “stand right here! Stand here!“ ”Pose like this! While we ate our lunch in the vast landscape, he played Chiharu Matsuyama’s “In the Sky and on the Earth” on a boom box at high volume (laugh).

While we watched the sunset on the beach, a man on a sea urchin fishing boat took us on his boat, and as we cruised along in the sunset, he opened the freshly caught sea urchins, saying “Eat me, eat me,” and we ate them all without hesitation. I have never eaten so much sea urchin before or since.

A kindergarten-aged boy we talked to on the train got off at the same station and brought a huge amount of freshly boiled corn to the inn where we were staying, along with his mother.

When we were touring Hokkaido University, a unique university professor showed us around the secret spots of the university and we took a lot of strange pictures. I kind of want to look back at the album.

 

The list is endless, but the people I met in Hokkaido were more friendly than I have ever experienced before, and it was a valuable experience that went beyond just enjoying the scenery. I was surprised at how vividly I can remember this trip, even though it was only a few days long decades ago.

As usual, I have strayed from the topic of global warming. My apologies.
