先日買取に伺ったお宅に素敵なステンドグラスのフロアランプが飾られていました。お聞きするとお客様ご自身がご趣味で製作されたとのこと。手先がよほど器用でなければ作れない作品だと素人目にも分かるほど美しいランプでございました。

 

昔親に連れて行ってもらっていた昔ながらの喫茶店のステンドグラスのランプが素敵だった思い出から、自分でもいくつか購入しています。小さなランプでも明かりを灯すと想像以上の存在感があります。子ども部屋に小さなフクロウのステンドグラスを置いていたのですが、ある日ベッドに入る前に一日の出来事をそのフクロウに報告している子供の姿を偶然目にし、そーっとドアを閉めました。柔らかい光が安心感を与えるのでしょうか。日々忙しくてゆっくり話を聞いてあげられていないのかと反省もしましたが、本人は覚えていないそうです。

 

朝ドラの「あんぱん」で主人公のたかしが暮らしている医師である伯父の家は診療所も兼ねていて素敵な和洋折衷の建物です。その中でダイニングでの食事のシーンでよく映り込む壁のステンドグラスにいつも目を奪われます。イケメンの登場人物たちを押しのけて目に飛び込んでくる可愛らしい印象のステンドグラスは日本の古い家屋にもしっくりと馴染んでいます。優しい光が注ぎ込み何とも美しいのです。外の光の強弱によっても日々変化が楽しめそうで憧れます。

 

ステンドグラスは中世ヨーロッパでキリスト教の普及と共に聖書の内容を分かりやすく伝える役目も果たしていました。大きな窓にはめ込まれた聖書の物語が描かれたステンドグラスの美しさは当時の人々にとっては衝撃だったのではないでしょうか。現在の技法はこの頃に既に完成していたと言われています。

 

日本でも大正時代から昭和初期にかけて建築装飾として広く普及し、ホテルや百貨店などで人々の目を楽しませました。この頃にアール・デコ様式の幾何学模様のデザインのステンドクラスが登場し人気だったとか。

この幾何学模様のステンドグラスが私は結構好みです。いつか飾れたらいいなという願望と共に、いや小さいものでいいから製作にチャレンジしてみる？などとまた好奇心だけが空回りしております。

A lovely stained glass floor lamp was displayed at a house we visited the other day. When we asked about it, we were told that the customer herself had made it as a hobby. The lamp was so beautiful that even the untrained eye could see that it could only have been made by someone who was very dexterous with his or her hands.

 

I have a fond memory of stained glass lamps in an old-fashioned coffee shop that my parents used to take me to, and I have bought a few myself. Even a small lamp has more presence than I imagined when lit. I had a small stained glass owl in my child’s room, and one day I happened to see my child reporting the day’s events to the owl before going to bed, and gently closed the door. The soft light of the room made him feel safe. I reflected on the fact that I was so busy that I had not been able to listen to him slowly, but he said he did not remember.

 

In the morning drama “Anpan,” the main character Takashi lives in his uncle’s house, a doctor, which also serves as a clinic and is a lovely blend of Japanese and Western architecture. The stained glass windows on the walls, which are often reflected in the dining room scene, always catch my attention. The lovely impression of the stained glass that catches the eye over the handsome characters blends in nicely with the old Japanese house. The gentle light pouring in is absolutely beautiful. I admire the way it seems to change day by day depending on the intensity of the light outside.

 

In medieval Europe, stained glass served the role of conveying the contents of the Bible in an easy-to-understand manner along with the spread of Christianity. The beauty of stained glass windows with biblical stories painted in large windows must have been a shock to the people of that time. It is said that the present technique was already completed at this time.

 

In Japan, stained glass spread widely as architectural decoration from the Taisho era (1912-1926) to the early Showa era (1926-1989), delighting the eyes of people in hotels, department stores, and other places. Around this time, stained glass with geometric designs in the Art Deco.

 

 

I quite like this geometric pattern stained glass. I hope to be able to decorate it someday, or maybe I should try my hand at making a small one. My curiosity is running away with me again.
