ここでクイズなのですが、日本で一番古いお寺はどこのお寺でしょうか？

 

法隆寺と答えてしそうになってしまいそうですが、法隆寺は世界最古の木造建築群を有しているお寺でして、創建は601年であります。実は601年創建の法隆寺より古い寺院が明日香の里に所在する飛鳥寺でして、飛鳥寺は日本で一番古いお寺であります。

 

先日「超国宝展」を訪れる際に以前から行ってみたかった飛鳥寺、ちょっと寄り道してきました。

 

 

 

 

飛鳥寺は587年に時の権力者である蘇我馬子によって建立を発し596年に完成したとされおります。創建当時の飛鳥寺は現在よりもかなり大規模だったようで、仏塔を中心に北と東西にそれぞれ金堂、東金堂、西金堂を配置し、大伽藍を有していた大きなお寺だったようです。ですが鎌倉時代に火災で大部分を焼失し、現在のお堂は江戸時代に再建されたものであります。現在は明日香らしい長閑な地に佇む可愛らしいお寺といったところであります。

 

 

 

 

 

 

現在の飛鳥寺は写真のように明日香の里に静かに佇む古寺となりましたが、むしろ現在の静かな雰囲気が在りし日の大伽藍の妄想が膨らむんですよね。歴史好き妄想癖の本領発揮といったところであります。

 

 

 

 

 

 

前述のように飛鳥寺は度重なる焼失の被害に遭っていますが、推古天皇の命により606年に造立された金銅釈迦如来像は、こちらも日本最古の大仏として現在も飛鳥寺の本堂に安置されています。この大仏様も建立当初から同じ場所に在り続けているそうなのですが、落雷による火災、そして戦乱の時代には雨ざらしだった期間も長かったようです。

 

そんな環境下で耐えていたということで大部分が後年に修復されたと考えられていましたが、最近の調査では大部分が当時のまま残っていることが判明し、国宝候補にもあがっているそうであります。

仏像の高さは275cmで銅と金でできており、奈良に比べるとかなり小ぶりではありますが、なかなか大きな大仏様でして、これが当時は金色に輝いていたのですから蘇我氏の栄華ぶりが伺え知れますね。

 

ところで、この大仏様は右から見るのと左から見るのでは、少しお顔の表情が違って見えるそうです。左から見るとやや穏やかに、右から見ると少し厳しい表情に見えるそうなのですが、どうでしょうか。

 

訪れてみるとわかりますですが、周りは田畑や民家がぽつぽつと立ち並ぶとてものどかな地区でありまして、この場所でぽつんと長く野ざらしに耐えたえ鎮座していたかと思いますと、ちょっと感慨深いものがあります。

 

先日は先を急ぐので、ちょっと立ち寄っただけでありましたが、ゆっくりとまた訪れてみたい明日香の里でありました。

Here’s a quiz: Which temple is the oldest temple in Japan?

 

 

You may be tempted to answer “Horyu-ji Temple,” but Horyu-ji Temple has the world’s oldest group of wooden buildings, and was founded in 601. In fact, Asukadera Temple in Asuka-no-sato is older than Horyu-ji Temple, which was built in 601.

 

When I visited the “Super National Treasures Exhibition” the other day, I took a short detour to Asukadera Temple, which I had wanted to visit for a long time.

 

 

Asuka-dera Temple is said to have been built by Soga Umako, a powerful man of the time, in 587 and completed in 596. It is said that Asukadera Temple at the time of its construction was much larger than it is today, and had a large temple complex with Kondo (main hall), Togondo (east hall), and Nishi Kondo (west hall) located on the north, east, and west sides, respectively, with the stupa at the center. However, most of the temple was destroyed by fire in the Kamakura period (1185-1333), and the current hall was rebuilt in the Edo period (1603-1868). The present Asukadera is a lovely temple located in a quiet area typical of Asuka.

 

 

The present Asukadera Temple has become an old temple standing quietly in the village of Asuka, as shown in the photo, but the quiet atmosphere of the present day makes my imagination of the great temple complex of the past grow. This is the realm of my history-loving imagination.

 

As mentioned above, Asukadera Temple was repeatedly destroyed by fire, but the gilt bronze statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, built in 606 by the order of Emperor Suiko, is still enshrined in the main hall of Asukadera Temple as the oldest Great Buddha in Japan. This statue has remained in the same place since its construction, but it was exposed to fire caused by lightning strikes and to rain for a long period of time during the period of warfare.

 

It was thought that most of the statue had been restored in later years because it had endured such an environment, but recent research has revealed that most of the statue remains as it was in those days, and it has been nominated as a candidate for National Treasure.

The statue is 275 cm tall and made of copper and gold, and although it is considerably smaller than those in Nara, it is a rather large statue of the Great Buddha, which was shining in gold at that time, which shows the prosperity of the Soga clan.

 

By the way, it is said that the face of the Great Buddha looks a little different when viewed from the left than from the right. It is said that the face looks a little calmer when viewed from the left, and a little more severe when viewed from the right.

 

As you can see when you visit, the area is very tranquil, with fields and houses standing side by side, and it is a bit deeply moving to think that the statue sat there for a long time in the open air.

 

I was in a hurry the other day, so I only stopped by for a short while, but I would like to visit Asuka village again.
