残念ながら、ＷBC準々決勝は、ベネズエラの逆転勝ちで、日本は初のベスト8での敗退となってしまいましたね。

本日、出張買取が入っておりましたので、ラジオで聴きながらどうなることかとソワソワしていたのですが、お仕事が終わってラジオをつけたら、WBCも終わっておりました。

前回の2023年に、奇跡のような逆転劇で優勝した日本チームでしたが、そうそう奇跡はおきないということでしょうか。そして、日本が敗退したとなれば、Netflixを解約する人がたくさんいそうだなとは思っていましたが、速攻で「ネトフリ解約」がXのトレンド入りしていたのには少々笑えました。

 

野球好きの友人曰く、ここまで観戦してきて、NPBと大きく違うと感じるのは、なんといってもピッチクロック制があることによる緊迫感なのだそう。私にはよく分からないのですが、日本のプロ野球を見慣れている人にすると、ポンポンと投げ込んでくれるのがなんとも心地よいのだそうな。

 

そもそもルールがよく分からないので調べてみると、ピッチクロックとは、投手が一定時間以内に投球しないといけないルールで、試合のテンポを早くするためのものなのですね。

現在のルールでは、

ランナーなし：15秒以内

ランナーあり：18秒以内

この時間を超えると、投手には自動的にボールが宣告されるのだそう。

この制度は、MLBで本格的に導入され、試合時間が短縮されるなど大きな効果が出ていると言われており、今回のWBCでも、このピッチクロックが採用されました。

 

実際に導入された後は、試合時間が平均で約24分も短くなり、3時間以上かかっていた試合がだいたい2時間40分くらいで終わるようになったといいます。観る側としては、試合がだらだら長くならないのは結構いい変化かなと思います。

ただ、選手にとってはちょっと大変そうですね。投手は投げるまでの時間が決まっているので、ゆっくり考えたり休んだりする余裕が減って、スタミナの管理も今までより難しくなるかもしれません。打者も、打席でのルーティンの時間が短くなるので、落ち着いて考える時間が減ってしまい、影響がありそうです。

 

面白いと思ったのは、盗塁が増えたことです。ピッチクロックと同時に、投手のけん制が基本2回までに制限されたので、ランナーがスタートを切りやすくなったのだそう。その結果、盗塁がかなり増えて、野球の動きが少し活発になったと言われています。

 

日本のプロ野球ではまだ本格的に導入されていませんが、試合時間の短縮やテンポの良さを考えると、今後どうなるのかちょっと気になるところです。個人的には、野球の面白さを保ちながら、観やすさも良くなるなら、検討する価値はあるのかもしれないなと思いました。

Unfortunately, Venezuela pulled off a comeback victory in the WBC quarterfinals, meaning Japan was eliminated in the quarterfinals for the first time.

I had a house call scheduled today, so I was listening to the game on the radio and feeling pretty anxious about how it would turn out. But by the time I finished my work and turned the radio back on, the WBC game was already over.

The Japanese team won the championship in 2023 with a miraculous comeback, but I guess miracles don’t happen that often. And since Japan was eliminated, I figured a lot of people would cancel their Netflix subscriptions, but I had to laugh a little when “Cancel Netflix” immediately trended on X.

 

According to a friend who loves baseball, after watching this tournament, the biggest difference he feels compared to the NPB is, above all, the sense of tension created by the pitch clock system. I don’t really get it myself, but for people used to watching Japanese pro baseball, they say there’s something incredibly satisfying about the pitcher just throwing the ball one after another.

 

I didn’t really understand the rule to begin with, so I looked it up. The pitch clock is a rule requiring the pitcher to deliver the ball within a certain time limit, designed to speed up the pace of the game.

Under the current rules:

No runners on base: Within 15 seconds

Runners on base: Within 18 seconds

If this time limit is exceeded, the pitcher is automatically called for a ball.

This system was fully implemented in MLB and is said to have had a significant impact, such as shortening game times, and it was also adopted for this year’s WBC.

 

After its implementation, game times reportedly shortened by an average of about 24 minutes, with games that used to take over three hours now ending in roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes. From a spectator’s perspective, I think it’s a pretty good change that games don’t drag on endlessly.

However, it seems a bit tough for the players. Since pitchers have a set amount of time before they must throw, they have less leeway to think things through or rest, and managing their stamina might become more difficult than before. For batters, too, the time for their pre-at-bat routines has been shortened, so they have less time to calmly think things through, which is likely to have an impact.

What I found interesting is that stolen bases have increased. Along with the pitch clock, pitchers’ pickoff attempts were limited to a maximum of two, making it easier for runners to steal. As a result, stolen bases have reportedly increased significantly, and the game has become a bit more dynamic.

It hasn’t been fully implemented in Japanese professional baseball yet, but considering the potential for shorter game times and a better pace, I’m curious to see how things will develop. Personally, I think it might be worth considering if it can maintain the excitement of baseball while also making the games easier to watch.
