爽やかな秋晴れの連休ですね。いかがお過ごしでしょうか？

少し時間が経ちましたが、先月お休みをいただきスペインのバルセロナを旅行しました。

直行便もなく、時差も７時間あり体力的に自信がなかったのですが、今しかないというタイミングでしたので、大量の常備薬を携え強行しました。

情報量が多すぎて圧倒されたまま過ぎてしまった日々だったので、頭を整理しながら綴らせていただけるとありがたいです。よろしければお付き合いください。

 

バルセロナといえばサグラダファミリア大聖堂とグエル公園くらいしか予備知識がなかったので、予定を詰め込まずゆっくり過ごすつもりでしたが、思いのほか忙しい日々となりました。

建築に縁のない私が、これほど影響されてしまうのですから、建築に興味のある方には宝石箱のような街かもしれません。

 

まず最初に訪れたのが、時差ボケの状態で見学したカタルーニャ音楽堂です。街の一角にひっそりと建っており華やかな装飾が施された音楽堂が異彩を放っておりました。

中に入るとさらに別世界が広がっていて、窓や天井のステンドグラスから陽の光が降り注いでいる様子に、シャキッと目が覚めました。世界で自然光で照明されているコンサート・ホールはこのカタルーニャ音楽堂のみだということです。

勉強不足で、この音楽堂が世界遺産であることも存じ上げませんでした。

 

 

 

 

天井のステンドグラスは太陽を表しており、万華鏡のように輝き、周りには陶器のバラがちりばめられています。

また天井や壁はタイルや彫刻で覆いつくされているという贅沢さ。

 

 

 

 

バルセロナが属するカタルーニャ州ははスペインの北東部、フランスとの国境沿いに位置します。スペインの中でも独特の文化を持っており、パブロ・ピカソ、サルバドール・ダリ、ジョアン・ミロなど個性豊かな芸術家を生み出した地域でもあります。

こちらのカタルーニャ音楽堂は建築家ルイス・ドメネック・イ・ムンタネーによって建てられました。ムンタネーは若くしてバルセロナ建築学校の教授となり、教え子にはサグラダファミリア建設で有名なアントニ・ガウディがいます。

 

１８９１年にカタルーニャ出身のリュイス・ミイェットが男性合唱団を創立し、練習やコンサートを楽しめる場所として音楽堂の建設をムンタネーに依頼し、合唱団の多くのメンバーが多く住んでいて、市民にとっても便利なこの場所にカタルーニャ音楽堂を建てたとのこと。

カタルーニャの芸術や伝統工芸を昇華させるようと、バルセロナ市内の実業家や富豪も多大な寄付したことで、このような豪華な音楽堂が生まれました。建設期間は１９０５年から１９０８年のわずか３年間でした。

バルセロナを中心としカタルーニャ地方で１９世紀末から２０世紀初頭に流行した「モデルニスモ」という様式が取り入れられ、独特の曲線が目を引きます。

ムンタネーは「光とアーチと花の魔術師」とも言われ、建物の細部に至るまで華やかな装飾が施されています。

建設には地元の彫刻家や工芸家たちが携わり、鉄という新しい技術を導入し、陶器、タイル、ガラス、木材にいたるまで地元のものを使用しているとのこと。パイプオルガンのみがドイツ製だそうです。

ステージは大きくはありませんが、２２００人を収容する客席からの眺めは圧巻です。中央上部のパイプオルガンが威風堂々としています。

 

 

 

 

 

 

コンサートは夕方以降に行われることが多いのですが、太陽の光を通すステンドグラスが見たくて昼間の見学を選びました。日中も決まった時間にパイプオルガンの演奏が流れ、その響きを聞けただけでも得難い経験でした。

建築家ムンタネーは音楽堂の完成後、ホールの上に住みコンサートの音楽を聴きながら過ごしたとか。これ以上の贅沢はないのではないでしょうか。

It’s a refreshingly sunny autumn holiday weekend, isn’t it? How are you spending your holidays?

A little time has passed, but last month I took a vacation and traveled to Barcelona, Spain.

There were no direct flights and the time difference was 7 hours, so I was not confident about my physical strength, but it was the right time to go, so I took a lot of medicines with me and went.

I was overwhelmed by the amount of information available, so I would be grateful if you would allow me to write about it as I sorted through it. Please bear with me if you like.

 

I had no prior knowledge of Barcelona other than the Sagrada Familia Cathedral and Parc Güell, so I planned to take my time and not cram my schedule full, but my days turned out to be busier than I had expected.

I had no prior knowledge of architecture, but I was so impressed by the city that it may be a jewel box for those who are interested in architecture.

 

The first place I visited was the Catalunya Conservatory, which I visited in my jet-lagged state. The music hall, which stands quietly in a corner of the city and is decorated with gorgeous ornaments, radiated a different color.

Once inside, I was awakened to a different world, with sunlight pouring in through the stained glass windows and ceiling. I was told that the Concert Hall of Catalonia is the only concert hall in the world that is illuminated by natural light.

I did not know that this music hall is a World Heritage Site.

 

The stained glass ceiling represents the sun, shining like a kaleidoscope, and is surrounded by ceramic roses.

The ceiling and walls are covered with tiles and sculptures.

 

Barcelona is located in Catalonia, in the northeastern part of Spain, along the border with France. It has a unique culture within Spain and has produced unique artists such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, and Joan Miró.

The Catalunya Concert Hall was built by architect Luis Domènech i Muntanay. Muntaner became a professor at the Barcelona School of Architecture at a young age, and among his students was Antoni Gaudí, famous for building the Sagrada Familia.

 

In 1891, Lluís Mijet, a native of Catalonia, founded a men’s choir and asked Muntanay to build a music hall as a place where they could practice and enjoy concerts, and he built the Catalan Music Hall in this location where many of the choir’s members lived and where it was convenient for the citizens.

The city of Barcelona’s businessmen and wealthy people also donated a great deal of money to sublimate Catalonia’s arts and traditional crafts, which led to the creation of this magnificent music hall. Construction lasted only three years, from 1905 to 1908.

The building was built in the “moderneismo” style, which was popular in Barcelona and other parts of Catalonia from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century, and its unique curves are eye-catching.

Muntanay is also known as “the magician of light, arches, and flowers,” and every detail of the building is gorgeously decorated.

Local sculptors and craftsmen were involved in the construction, and they introduced a new technology, iron, and used local materials such as pottery, tiles, glass, and even wood. Only the pipe organ is said to be made in Germany.

The stage is not large, but the view from the auditorium, which seats 2,200 people, is breathtaking. The pipe organ in the upper center is majestic.

 

Concerts are usually held later in the evening, but we chose to visit during the daytime to see the stained glass windows that allow sunlight to shine through. The pipe organ plays at regular intervals during the day as well, and it was a unique experience just to hear the sound of the organ.

After the completion of the music hall, the architect Muntaney lived above the hall and spent his time listening to the concert music. What could be more luxurious than that?
