当店スタッフたちは美術館巡りなどで教養や平穏を得ていますが、皆さまも美術鑑賞を楽しみに、徐々に足を運ばれてることと思います。

本日は、日本の美術界を支えた賛仰のコレクター列伝__

国宝級古美術品などなど、近現代を代表するコレクターたちを深掘りです。

 

美術館や展覧会などで私たちの目を楽しませてくれる日本美術の数々。

その背景には情熱と愛着をもって名品を買い支え、後世に伝えることに努めたコレクターたちの存在があります。

欧米の価値観が流入し、日本をとりまく美意識が大転換した明治期。

日本の美術を支援してきた実業家の方たちの存在を、恥ずかしながらここで勉強させてもらいます。

 

「数寄者（すきしゃ）」という言葉がありますが、数寄は「好き者」の意で、風流人を指します。

明治以降、茶の湯を通して名物道具や古美術品を蒐集（しゅうしゅう）した「近代数寄者」と呼ばれる財界人が現われたそう。

その代表格が明治・大正期の政治家・井上馨氏であります。

現在の山口県に生まれ、明治新政府の中心官僚として、日本の近代化に大きな役割を果たした人物とのこと。

実業界の発展にも尽力し、紡績業・鉄道事業などを興して殖産興業に努めた氏は、三井財閥最高顧問となりました。

明治維新後、廃仏毀釈によって、日本古来の仏教美術が破壊されるなか、井上氏らはそれらを積極的に蒐集し、名品を救済。

『孔雀明王像』や『虚空蔵菩薩像』（ともに東京国立博物館蔵）、奈良国立博物館蔵の『十一面観音菩薩像』など、井上氏が所蔵した仏画には、のちに国宝に指定されたものもあります。

財力だけではなく、確かな目もお持ち！

日本の至宝ともいえる作品群は、財界人コレクターに引き継がれたとのことです。

 

他にも井上氏と並び称される人物に、明治期の日本文化の守護者として、益田孝という実業家がいらっしゃいます。

幕府の使節に随行して渡仏。

維新後大蔵省に入省、のちに世界初の総合商社・三井物産の設立とともに社長を就任された方です。

また、日本経済新聞の前身にあたる中外物価新報を創刊。

茶人としても高名で純翁と号し、”千利休以来の大茶人”と称されたとのことです。

なんとも多趣味⁈で（その域は越えていますね）、多才、輝かしい経歴ですね。

この方は、日本の美術品が海外に大量に流出するのを見かね、それらを買い支え、茶道具ほか古美術品を蒐集。

盛時は5000点とも8000点ともいわれる膨大な蒐集品は、戦後の混乱で流出散乱しますが、五島美術館の平安時代の絵巻物『源氏物語絵巻』（国宝）や畠山記念館の『志野撫四方酒呑（しのなでよほうさけのみ）』などに往時を偲ぶことができるそうです。

 

そして、益田氏が築いた財界の数寄者ネットワークには、同じ志をもち、自身の蒐集品を核として現代に続く有名美術館を創設した実業家コレクターも。

東武鉄道の他、国内初の地下鉄開通など、多くの鉄道敷設や再建を手がけ、「鉄道王」と呼ばれた根津嘉一郎もそのひとりであります。

そうです、この方の遺志は、皆さま憧れ⁈の根津美術館に引き継がれています。

山梨の政界で活躍し始めた頃からの骨董好きだったよう。

東京実業界での活躍に伴い、蒐集熱に拍車がかかったとのことなんです。

その買い方といえば”豪快”のひと言だったようで…

当時、盛んに催された名家の売り立てでは、他の追随を許さぬ高額で次々と落札し、鎌倉時代の宗教画『那智瀧図』（国宝）など、数多の名品を手中に収めたそうです。

氏が亡くなった翌年、日本・東洋の古美術品コレクションを保存・展示するために根津美術館開館に至ったとのこと。

今では、国宝７件、重要文化財８７件、重要美術品９４件も所蔵されているんですね。

”豪快”の恩恵を受けられた私たちにとっては、ありがたいものです。

 

どの美術品もいくつもの時代を超え、それらを継ぐ人たちの意志とともに、今わたしたちの目の前にあるんだなぁとしみじみ思います。

簡単に喪失されてしまいそうな、ときには儚いような美術品でありますが、後世にいつまでも伝わるよう、コレクターたちの情熱も受け継がれていきますよう…

After the Meiji era, business people called “modern scholars” who collected famous tools and antiques through the tea ceremony appeared.

The representative is Mr. Kaoru Inoue, a politician in the Meiji and Taisho eras.

Born in what is now Yamaguchi Prefecture, he played a major role in the modernization of Japan as a central bureaucrat of the new Meiji government.

He also contributed to the development of the business world, and worked for the breeding industry by developing the spinning industry and railway business, and became the chief advisor of Mitsui Zaibatsu.

After the Meiji Restoration, while the ancient Japanese Buddhist art was destroyed by Haibutsu Kishaku, Inoue and his colleagues actively collected them and rescued the masterpieces.

Buddhist paintings owned by Mr. Inoue, such as “Mahamayuri Statue”, “Kokuzo Bosatsu Statue” (both from the Tokyo National Museum), and “Eleven-faced Kannon Bosatsu Statue” from the Nara National Museum, were later designated as national treasures. There are also some.

Another person named alongside Mr. Inoue is a businessman named Masuda Takashi as a guardian of Japanese culture during the Meiji era.

He accompanied the envoy of the Shogunate to France.

He joined the Ministry of Finance after the restoration, and later became president with the establishment of the world’s first general trading company, Mitsui & Co., Ltd.

He also launched the Chugai Shogyo Shimbun, the predecessor of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.

He is also famous as a tea master and was called Juno, and he was called “the great tea master since Sen no Rikyu”.

He has a lot of hobbies (beyond that range), is versatile, and has a brilliant career.

This person could not see a large amount of Japanese art flowing overseas, bought them, and collected tea utensils and other antique art.

The enormous collections, which are said to be 5,000 or 8,000 at the peak, are scattered due to the turmoil after the war. It seems that you can remember the past with “Sake drink (only Shino de Yohosake)”.

 

And, in the network of people in the business world built by Mr. Masuda, there are also businessman collectors who have the same aspirations and founded a famous museum that continues to the present age with their own collections as the core.

In addition to Tobu Railway, Kaichiro Nezu, who has been involved in the construction and reconstruction of many railways, including the opening of the first subway in Japan, is one of them.

That’s right, this person’s will has been handed down to the Nezu Museum, which everyone longed for.

He seems to have been an antique lover since he started playing an active part in Yamanashi’s politics.

It is said that his collection fever was spurred by his success in the Tokyo business world.

It seems that the way to buy it was a word of “exciting” .

At that time, many famous houses were sold at a high price that was unrivaled, and many masterpieces such as the Kamakura period religious painting “Nachi Takizu” (national treasure) were acquired. That’s right.

The year after his death, the Nezu Museum was opened to preserve and display the collection of Japanese and Oriental antiquities.

Today, it holds 7 national treasures, 87 important cultural properties, and 94 important art objects.

We are grateful for those of us who have benefited from the “excitement”.

I think that every work of art has passed many times and is now in front of us with the will of those who succeed it.

It’s a work of art that is likely to be easily lost, and sometimes ephemeral, but I hope that the passion of collectors will be passed down to future generations .
