さて、明日は「節分」ですね。

節分は、「立春」「立夏」「立秋」「立冬」と4つある季節の変わり目のうち、「立春」の前日にあたる日のことを指しまして、地球と太陽の位置関係によって決められるのですが、だいたい毎年2月4日頃に訪れるため、節分はその前日にあたるようです。

 

2024年の立春は2月4日。よって、その前日の2月3日が節分の日になります。節分は、翌日から新しい季節が始まる区切りの日と考えられておりますので、邪気や悪いものを落として、新しい年に幸運を呼び込むことを目的に、日本各地でこの行事が行われていますね。

 

名古屋でも各所で盛大に節分の豆まきイベントが開催されますが、名古屋の節分会で有名なのが「尾張四観音」です。

「尾張四観音」とは、「荒子観音寺」「龍泉寺」「甚目寺観音」「笠寺観音」の4つの寺院を指します。
徳川家康が尾張の国の中心として名古屋城を築いた際、名古屋城から見て鬼門の方角にあたる寺院を、名古屋城の鎮護として「尾張四観音」と定めたことが由来とされています。

 

尾張四観音の節分恵方は、「笠寺観音」→「龍泉寺」→「荒子観音寺」→「笠寺観音」→「甚目寺観音」と5年サイクルで回っており、2024年の恵方は「龍泉寺」です。

さらに今年の干支は「辰」。尾張四観音の節分恵方が5年で一巡するのに対し干支は12年で1サイクルですので、今年は60年に一度しかない「辰」と「龍」が合わさる奇跡の年なのだそう。

この地方では、名古屋城から見て、その年の歳徳神という吉祥の神様がいる方角に当たる恵方に一番近い寺へお参りするとご利益があると言われていますので、60年に一度の巡り合わせを考えると、御利益もさらにあるような気がしてきますね。

 

子供の頃から親しんできた「節分」ですが、なんで「鬼に豆をまくのか」という質問をされ、困ったことも何度か。これを機会にあらためて、節分について学んでみました。

 

仏教では、鬼は煩悩を表します。節分の鬼は赤か青のイメージがありましたが、他にも緑・黒・黄の鬼もおりました。

鬼は「人間の心にある煩悩の象徴」とされ、赤は欲望、青は怒り・憎しみ、緑はやる気が出ない、黒は疑い、黄色は甘えなどの意味があり、それぞれが違う煩悩の種類を表しているようです。

この5つのなかから、自分が打ち勝ちたい煩悩を選び、それを表す鬼に豆をぶつけると良いといういわれがあり、鬼に豆をまくことで煩悩を追い払い、気持ち良く新しい季節を迎える意味があるようですね。

 

では、なぜ豆をまくのかというと、昔から、人間の命を支える五穀(米、麦、ひえ、あわ、大豆)の中でも大豆が一番大きく、力が強いと考えられていたからだそう。

また、豆には「魔（ま）を滅（め）する」という意味も込められていて、節分には必ず炒った豆を使うのも、「豆を炒る」が「魔の目を射る」に通じることからきているようです。

さらに豆まきに使う豆を枡に入れるのも「“ますます”力が“増す”」という意味が込められているんだとか。

 

節分の後、私にとって辛いのは、豆の片付けと、年の数（満年齢に新年の分として1粒プラスした数）だけ豆を食べること。心身の邪気も払えて無病息災になれるとのことですが、豆類の苦手な私は、毎年増える豆の量に、修行のようになっております。今年は何粒食べようかしら･･･

Tomorrow is “Setsubun”.

Setsubun is the day before Risshun, one of the four seasonal turning points: Risshun, Risshatsu, Risshakyu, and Risshunyu. Setsubun is determined by the position of the earth and the sun, and it usually falls on February 4 every year.

 

In 2024, the first day of spring will be February 4. Therefore, February 3, the day before Risshun, will be the day of Setsubun. Setsubun is considered to be the day to mark the beginning of a new season, so this event is held in many parts of Japan to bring good luck in the new year by removing evil spirits and bad things.

 

In Nagoya, Setsubun bean-throwing events are held in various places, and the most famous Setsubun event in Nagoya is the “Owari Four Kannon”.

The “Owari Four Kannon” refers to four temples: Arako-Kannon-ji Temple, Ryusen-ji Temple, Jimoku-ji Kannon Temple, and Kasadera Kannon Temple.
When Ieyasu Tokugawa built Nagoya Castle as the center of Owari Province, he designated the temples in the direction of the devil’s gate from Nagoya Castle as the “Owari Four Kannon” to protect the castle.

 

 

The Setsubun eho of the four Owari Kannon temples rotates in a five-year cycle from “Kasadera Kannon” to “Ryusenji” to “Arako-Kannonji” to “Kasadera Kannon” to “Jimokuji Kannon”, with the eho for 2024 being “Ryusenji”.

Furthermore, this year’s zodiac sign is “dragon. While the Setsubun ekata of the four Owari Kannon temples rotate once every five years, the zodiac signs rotate once every 12 years, so this year is a miracle year for the combination of “dragon” and “dragon,” which happens only once every 60 years.

In this region, it is said that it is beneficial to visit the temple closest to the direction of the god of good fortune called “Toshitokujin” as seen from Nagoya Castle, which is the direction of the god of good fortune for that year.

 

Setsubun” has been familiar to me since childhood, but I have been asked several times why I have to “throw beans at ogres,” and I have been troubled by the question. I took this opportunity to learn about Setsubun once again.

 

In Buddhism, ogres represent vexations. I had an image of red or blue ogres for Setsubun, but there were also green, black, and yellow ogres.

Oni are said to “symbolize the vexations in the human mind,” with red representing desire, blue anger and hatred, green lack of motivation, black doubt, and yellow naivete, each representing a different kind of vexation.

It is said that it is good to choose the affliction you want to conquer from among these five and throw beans at the demon that represents the affliction.

 

The reason why people sow beans is because soybeans were thought to be the largest and most powerful of the five grains (rice, wheat, millet, millet, and soybeans) that sustain human life since ancient times.

Beans also have the meaning of “destroying evil spirits,” and the reason why roasted beans are always used for Setsubun is because “to roast beans” means “to shoot out the eyes of evil spirits.

The beans used in the bean-throwing ceremony are also placed in a “masu”, which is said to mean “more and more power”.

 

After Setsubun, the hardest part for me is to clean up the beans and eat as many beans as the number of the year (full age plus one bean for the New Year). It is said that it can dispel evil spirits in body and mind and bring good health, but as I am not good at beans, the amount of beans increases every year, and it has become like a training for me. I wonder how many beans I will eat this year…
