今日は立春。暦の上では春のスタートです。

とはいえ、外に出ればまだまだ寒いし、「春？」って首をかしげたくなりますね。それもそのはず、立春は実際に暖かくなる日というより、「そろそろ季節が切り替わりますよ」という合図みたいな存在なんですよね。日差しがほんの少しやわらいだり、夕方の明るさがわずかに伸びていたり、よく見るとちゃんと春の気配は忍び込んできているのです。そうそう、花粉の気配も感じ始めておりますよ。

昔の人は、この立春をとても大事にしていました。今でいう元日みたいな感覚で、「ここから一年が始まる」と考えることもあったそうです。ですので前日の節分で豆をまいて、厄を追い出して、気持ちを一度リセットする。季節も運気も、ちゃんと区切りをつけてから次へ進む。その几帳面さ、ちょっと見習いたくなります。

昔の人にとっては、ただの日付ではなくて、一年の運気が切り替わる大事な日。江戸時代の庶民も「立春の朝に食べると一年健康でいられる」と言われるものを用意したり、季節の掛け軸を床の間に飾ったりして、春の訪れを祝っていたようですね。

江戸の町では、立春の朝にあま酒 を飲む習慣があり、「甘い酒で身体を温めて、冬の邪気を追い払う」という理由で、この日だけ特別にお寺や町の茶店で振る舞われることもあったとか。
想像すると、寒い朝にみんなで甘酒を飲みながら「さあ、春だ！」って元気を出す風景、なんだかほっこりします。

節分というと、恵方巻を食べるという習慣はこの地方でもすっかり定着しましたが、我が家では方向をめぐって軽い口論が起きます。「そっちは去年だ」「いや今年はこっちだ」とスマホを見比べながら、結局どちらでもいい空気になるのですが。そして、無言で一本食べきるはずが、途中でしゃべり出してしまい、ルールは自然消滅。それでもなぜか、ちゃんとやった気分にはなるんですけども。

今日から立春。新しい年だからといって無理に何かを始めなくてもいいけれど、「今年もまあ、やっていきますか」とつぶやいて、少し気持ちを整えるにはちょうどいい日かもしれません。

Today is Risshun, the start of spring according to the calendar.

Still, stepping outside, it’s still quite cold, making you tilt your head and wonder, “Spring?” And no wonder—Risshun isn’t so much the day it actually gets warm as it is a signal saying, “The seasons are about to shift.” Look closely, and you’ll see signs of spring creeping in: the sunlight softening just a little, the evening light lingering slightly longer. Oh yes, and the hint of pollen is starting to appear too.

People in the past held Risshun in very high regard. It was considered akin to what we now call New Year’s Day, a time when they thought, “The year truly begins here.” That’s why they would throw beans on Setsubun, the day before, to drive away misfortune and reset their spirits. They made sure to draw a clear line between seasons and fortunes before moving forward. That meticulousness is something we could learn from.

For people back then, it wasn’t just a date on the calendar—it was a crucial day when the year’s fortune shifted. Even commoners in the Edo period celebrated spring’s arrival by preparing foods said to bring health for the year if eaten on Risshun morning, or by hanging seasonal scrolls in their alcoves.

In Edo towns, there was a custom of drinking amazake (sweet rice wine) on the morning of Risshun. The reasoning was that “warming the body with sweet sake drives away winter’s evil spirits.” On this day alone, it was sometimes specially served at temples or town teahouses.
Just imagining the scene—everyone drinking amazake on a cold morning, cheering “Spring is here!”—is somehow heartwarming.

Speaking of Setsubun, the custom of eating ehō-maki has become firmly established in this region too. At my house, though, it leads to a minor argument over which direction to face. “That way was last year’s,” “No, this year it’s this way,” we say, comparing our smartphones, until it ends up feeling like either way is fine. And then, even though we’re supposed to eat the whole roll in silence, we inevitably start talking halfway through, and the rule just fades away. Still, somehow, it feels like we did it properly.

Today marks the start of spring. You don’t have to force yourself to start something new just because it’s a new year, but it might be the perfect day to mutter, “Well, I guess I’ll just keep going this year too,” and get your thoughts in order.

さきほど、行って参りました！。

本日、14：30より始まったご近所城山八幡宮の節分祭です。あ、豆まきです。

青空にきれいに飛んでますね、豆が笑。

10分前に到着。すでに本殿の上では年男年女(当年干支の男女)・厄年・廻り厄年の方が豆まきの準備が整っていました。年男年女の方この節分祭に参加し、御神前で豆を撒くことで厄を祓い運を開くことができるようでして、節分のご祈祷設けられるようです。（詳細は城山八幡宮のHPへ)

そして、本殿下では臨戦態勢の老若男女（自分含む）がわらわらと集まってきています。

時間になり一斉に豆まきがはじまりました！。手を広げて皆さん待っているのですが、飛んできた豆を最初にキャッチできるのは、やはり背の高い男性、そしてこぼれ落ちた豆を素早く手に取れるのは子どもたちです。もう一帯が、がやがやしてきましたが、自分のようなどうすることもできないおばさんがいちばんあたふたしていたような気がします。

ですが、青空に舞いながら飛んでくる豆にあたふたする老若男女の様子が神事と言えど笑えてきます。ていうか、みんな笑ってます笑。それがとてもいい景色でした。

そして肝心の豆ですが、スタッフY、4袋なんとか手に入りました。（ありがとうございました。）

店主・スタッ全員分はなんとか確保できましたので、豆を食べながら今年の厄落とし、開運をかみしめたいと思います。

このような豆まき、実ははじめてだったのですが、これれはちょっとやみつきになりそうです。そして、いつか年女として本殿から豆まきをしてみたいな…と絶対思えてきますので、城山八幡宮の節分祭、来年是非参加してみてください。

I just came back!

Today’s Setsubun Festival at the nearby Shiroyama Hachimangu Shrine started at 2:30 PM. Oh, the bean-throwing ceremony.

The beans are flying beautifully into the blue sky, lol.

I arrived 10 minutes early. Already, on the main hall’s upper level, the men and women of the zodiac year (those born in the current zodiac sign), those facing unlucky years, and those in their rotating unlucky years were all ready for the bean-throwing. It seems that by participating in this Setsubun festival and throwing beans before the deity, the men and women of the zodiac year can purify misfortune and open their fortune. A special Setsubun prayer service is held for this purpose. (For details, see Shiroyama Hachimangu Shrine’s website)

Meanwhile, below the main hall, men and women of all ages (myself included) were gathering in a state of readiness.

The time came, and the bean-throwing began all at once! Everyone stood with arms outstretched, waiting. Naturally, the tall men were the first to catch the flying beans, while the children were quickest to grab the ones that fell to the ground. The whole area became a noisy hubbub, but I think it was the helpless middle-aged women like me who were flustered the most.

But seeing everyone, young and old, scrambling over beans dancing through the blue sky—even though it’s a sacred ritual—was genuinely funny. Actually, everyone was laughing! It was a wonderful sight.

And as for the beans themselves, Staff Y managed to get four bags. (Thank you so much.)

We managed to secure enough for the shop owner and all the staff, so we’ll savor eating these beans while reflecting on warding off this year’s misfortune and welcoming good luck.

This was actually my first time experiencing this kind of bean-throwing, but I think I might get a little hooked on it. And I absolutely feel like someday, as a woman of the zodiac year, I’d like to try throwing beans from the main hall… So, please do try attending the Setsubun Festival at Shiroyama Hachimangu next year.

本日は、先日からかにカニはまかぜ号にて訪れた城崎温泉へ訪れた続編です。

なんとか城崎温泉まで電車は走っておりましたが、ひとたび降り立った城崎温泉はご覧のとおり笑。旅館のカニはもちろん美味しく、サイコーだったのですが、寒さと雪により城崎温泉の楽しみの一つであった立ち寄り湯は断念となりました。

旅館の方とお話したところ、今年は例年以上の豪雪だということで、こんなタイミングは逆にすごいのかなとも思いました笑。これから城崎温泉へ行かれる方は防寒とスノトレのような靴で行かれることを是非おススメしますが、雪の城崎温泉はそれゆえにとても情緒がありました。想像してみてください…、お風呂上りの浴衣で、カニに熱燗、そしてこの雪景色…そんな景色の中、友人とおしゃべりしながらゆっくり飲もうと思っていたのですが、深酒により気が付いたらあたりはすっかり朝になっていました笑。

そして翌朝、城崎温泉を後にしてもう一つの目的神戸で開催しております「大ゴッホ展」へ。前情報では予約なしですと180待ちというディズニーランド並みの待ち時間だということで、さすがに予約だったのですが、もし行かれる方は予約必須であります。

今回の展覧会では、クレラー＝ミュラー美術館が所蔵するコレクションから、《夜のカフェテラス》をはじめとする約60点の作品と、モネやルノワールなど、同時代の作品を展示されていました。

今回の展覧会で、どうしてもみたかった「夜のカフェテラス」

1888年2月、ファン・ゴッホは南仏プロヴァンス地方のアルルを訪れるのですが、都会での生活に疲弊を感じ、心機一転をはかる意図もあったようです。春の訪れとともに、彼はアルルの澄み切った大気と鮮やかな色彩に魅了されます。初期の彼の絵を見ていますと、農村生活を主題としたバルビゾン派の巨匠ジャン＝フランソワ・ミレーの作品に強い憧れを抱いていたようでして、それはどことなくそのトーンは落ち着いたものが多かったように思えます。それが、アルルの開放的な雰囲気や自然に影響を受け、鮮烈な色彩対比で表現へと変化していき、彼の次の表現方法となっていったのでしょうか。

基調となっている色は、夜空の青色とカフェの黄色い灯りでして、これまで夜空を黒か灰色にしか描かなかった西洋絵画としてはかなり斬新な表現なようです。交流のあったルイ・アンクタンや歌川広重による江戸の月夜を描く浮世絵からの影響も想定され、「夜のカフェテラス」は、ゴッホが様々な角度から影響を受け、新境地を切り開いた傑作の一枚だったのでしょうね。

弾丸の城崎・神戸旅、豪雪にもめげず、なんとかたどり着くことができ、慌ててお見上げを買いあさり、無事新幹線に乗り込むのでありました。楽しかったです。

Today’s post is a follow-up to our recent trip to Kinosaki Onsen aboard the Kani Kani Hamakaze train.

The train somehow made it to Kinosaki Onsen, but once we stepped off, well, you can see for yourself lol. The crab at the ryokan was delicious, absolutely amazing, but the cold and snow forced us to skip one of Kinosaki’s main pleasures: visiting the public bathhouses.

Talking with the inn staff, I learned this year’s snowfall was heavier than usual. In a way, I thought this timing was actually pretty amazing lol. For anyone planning to visit Kinosaki Onsen, I highly recommend bringing warm clothes and snow-ready boots. That said, snowy Kinosaki Onsen had a truly poetic charm. Just imagine… fresh out of the bath in your yukata, enjoying hot sake with crab, all while taking in this snowy landscape… I had planned to relax and drink while chatting with friends in such a setting, but I ended up drinking too much and when I came to, it was already morning (laughs).

The next morning, we left Kinosaki Onsen and headed to our other destination, the “Great Van Gogh Exhibition” in Kobe. According to prior information, without a reservation, the wait time was 180 minutes, comparable to Disneyland, so we made a reservation, as expected. If you plan to go, reservations are essential.

This exhibition featured about 60 works from the Kröller-Müller Museum’s collection, including “Café Terrace at Night,” as well as works by Monet, Renoir, and other artists of the same period.

In February 1888, Van Gogh visited Arles in the Provence region of southern France, apparently with the intention of refreshing himself after feeling exhausted by city life. With the arrival of spring, he was captivated by the clear air and vivid colors of Arles. Looking at his early paintings, it seems that he had a strong admiration for the works of Jean-Francois Millet, a master of the Barbizon school whose subject matter was rural life, and his tone often seemed somewhat subdued. Perhaps it was the open atmosphere and nature of Arles that influenced him to change his style to one of vivid color contrasts, which became his next method of expression.

The basic colors are the blue of the night sky and the yellow light of the cafe, which seems to be a rather novel expression in Western painting, which had previously only depicted the night sky as black or gray. Influences from Louis Ancain, with whom he exchanged ideas, and ukiyo-e depicting Edo moonlit nights by Utagawa Hiroshige are also plausible. “Café Terrace at Night” was likely one of Van Gogh’s masterpieces, created by synthesizing influences from various angles and breaking new ground.

My whirlwind trip to Kinosaki and Kobe—undeterred by heavy snow—finally got me there. I frantically bought souvenirs and made it onto the bullet train safely. It was a blast.
