今週末１０月１１日（土）、１２日（日）にかけて日・タイ文化フェス２０２５が覚王山の日泰寺境内で開催されています。１１日（土）は９時半～２０時、１２日（日）は９時半～１９時の予定です。

タイ舞踏やムエタイの実演などのショーもあり、屋台では本格的なタイ料理も楽しめます。トゥクトゥクに乗って無料撮影もできるそうですよ。少し覗いてみましたが、美味しそうな香りが漂っていてお腹が鳴りました。

 

先日スタッフTがブログでお伝えしたように明日１２日（日）には歌手の瑛人さんが出演されるそうです。日本で大ヒットした「香水」をタイ語でもリリースされたようで、もしかしたらタイ語の「香水」が聴けるかもしれませんね。

 

タイ料理では様々な香辛料が使われ、グリーンカレーやトムヤムクンなどが有名ですが、私は何といっても米麺を使った「パッタイ」が大好物です。ふと家でも作れるのかと思い調べてみましたら「タマリンドペースト」という調味料が必要なようです。タマリンドとはマメ科のフルーツで、そら豆のような殻に甘酸っぱい果実が入っています。時々見かけるバナナにタマリンドペーストを挟んだスナックはクセになる味で手がとまりません。パッタイの甘酸っぱさはタマリンドの味だったのかと今さらながら知りました。しかしタマリンドペーストなんてどこで手に入るのかと思っていましたら、輸入食品店のカルディでも購入できるようです。なんなら無印良品でパッタイの手作りキットが売られており、タマリンドペーストもしっかり入っていました。ありがたいことですが日本の食に対する貪欲さに驚いてしまいます。

 

 

 

 

先日ベトナム料理のフォーを食べに行った時にメニューにパッタイを見つけ、思わずパッタイを頼んでしまいました。ベトナムではパッタイはタイ風やきそばとして浸透し、レストランなどでよく提供されているようです。欧米ではパッタイをベトナム料理だと思っている人も多いのだとか。本場より少し甘めだそうですが、日本も各国の料理をアレンジすることが多いので同じようなものかもしれませんね。

 

さてタイの首都といえば「バンコク」ですが、実はタイの人はバンコクとは呼ばず「クルンテープ（天使の都）」と呼びます。しかし正式な名称はクルンテープでもなく、とんでもなく長い名称なのです。世界一長い首都名としてギネスブックにも登録されています。

ちなみに正式名は「クルンテープ・マハーナコーン・アモーンラッタナコーシン・マヒンタラーユッタヤー・マハーディロック・ポップ・ノパラット・ラーチャタニーブリーロム・ウドムラーチャニウェートマハーサターン・アモーンピマーン・アワターンサティット・サッカタッティヤウィサヌカムプラシット」だそうです。タイの皆さま、誤字脱字があったら申し訳ありません。しかしタイの人もさすがに覚えるのが難しいようで覚え歌もあるようです。

 

タイ語は複数の単語を組み合わせて意味を作ることが多いらしく、単語自体も長いものが多いのだとか。この長い首都名もひとつひとつに意味があり、「天使の都、雄大な城、帝釈天の宝玉・・・」など都の繁栄の願いが込められた言葉が並んでいます。

 

異国の文化に触れると凝り固まった頭が刺激され、元気をもらえる気がします。ぜひ覚王山日泰寺でタイ文化に浸ってみてはいかがでしょうか。

This weekend, October 11th (Sat) and 12th (Sun), the Japan-Thailand Culture Festival 2025 is being held at the grounds of Nittaiji Temple in Kakuozan. Hours are 9:30 AM to 8:00 PM on Saturday the 11th, and 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM on Sunday the 12th.

There will be shows featuring Thai dance and Muay Thai demonstrations, and you can enjoy authentic Thai cuisine at the food stalls. You can even take a free photo riding in a tuk-tuk. I took a quick peek, and the delicious smells made my stomach rumble.

 

As Staff T mentioned in the blog the other day, singer Eito will be performing tomorrow, Sunday the 12th. It seems he released his big hit song “Koushu” in Thai, so you might be able to hear the Thai version of “Koushu”.

 

Thai cuisine uses a variety of spices, and green curry and tom yum kung are famous, but my favorite is definitely “pad thai” made with rice noodles. I wondered if I could make it at home, so I looked it up and found that I would need a seasoning called “tamarind paste”. Tamarind is a legume fruit with a pod like a broad bean that contains sweet and sour fruit. I sometimes see snacks with tamarind paste sandwiched between bananas, and their addictive taste makes it impossible to stop eating them. I only recently learned that the sweet and sour taste of pad thai comes from tamarind. I wondered where I could get tamarind paste, and it seems you can buy it at Kaldi, an imported food store. Muji even sells a homemade pad thai kit that includes tamarind paste. It’s wonderful, but I’m amazed by Japan’s insatiable appetite for food.

 

The other day, when I went out for Vietnamese pho, I spotted pad thai on the menu and couldn’t resist ordering it. In Vietnam, pad thai seems to have caught on as a Thai-style fried noodle dish and is commonly served in restaurants. I hear it’s a bit sweeter than the authentic version, but since Japan often adapts dishes from other countries, it might be similar.

 

Now, the capital of Thailand is Bangkok, but actually, Thai people don’t call it Bangkok, they call it Krung Thep (City of Angels). However, the official name is not Krung Thep, but an incredibly long name. It is registered in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest capital name in the world.

Incidentally, the official name is “Krung Thep Maha Nakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Yuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkatattiya Witsanukam Prasit”. To everyone in Thailand, I apologize if there are any typos or omissions. However, even Thai people seem to find it difficult to remember, so there is a song to help them remember.

 

Thai words often combine multiple words to create meaning, and the words themselves are often long. Each part of this long capital name has a meaning, and the words are strung together to express wishes for the prosperity of the capital, such as “City of Angels, Magnificent Palace, Jewel in the Heavenly Realm…”

 

Encountering foreign cultures stimulates my rigid mind and gives me energy. Why not immerse yourself in Thai culture at Kakuozan Nittaiji Temple?
