暖かくなりましたね。本日は三連休の中日ということで、さらにここ名古屋、お天気もよいせいでしょうか。街中を行き交う人がどことなく浮足立っているように見えて仕方ありません。そんな中、本日は仕事に向かうスタッフFでありますが、浮足立っているのは人だけではなく、スーパーの売り場もなかなかの春爛漫であります。

 

 

 

 

売り場には今、あのイチゴの瑞々しい赤色が私に買ってくれアピールしてきまして、昨日も誘惑に負けて手に取ったわけですが、イチゴ、新種が多くみられるようになりましたね。いつの間にかその種類が増えていますが、高級品の桐箱入りのものが出回っていいたり、苺スイーツのアフヌン特集をみかけたり、その多種多様ぷりとその存在アピールや食し方になど、このところ驚くばかりであります。みなさまはいろいろ食べてみましたでしょうか。

 

日本のイチゴは品種も約300種と大変多く、世界全体の品種の半分以上が日本のものだという説もありイチゴ大国にっぽんなのですが、現在も日本各地で品種改良が重ねられ、個性的な新品種も続々と誕生しています。あくまで私調べなのですが、このところ店頭で新種を毎年のように見かける気がいたします。

 

それにしても、この日本人のイチゴ愛はどこからくるのか。

その特徴は「これ」といってひとつに収まらないのですが、ビタミンCなどの美容に良い成分が多いという「栄養学的な理由」なのか、甘酸っぱくて酸味と甘みのバランスが良いという「味覚的な理由」なのか、はたまた赤くて葉の緑とのコントラストが映え、切ると断面がハートなど見た目や形が可愛いといった「ビジュアル的な理由」なのか、ひとつに収まらないところ全部が惹きつけ、気になって仕方ないぶつぶつのあの赤いヤツといったところでしょうか。

 

ちなみに、日本においても平安時代の古代法典「延喜式」にはイチゴの記載があり、野生のイチゴが食ベられていたことが分かり、どうやら平安時代からイチゴ愛は始まっているそうですので、行きつくところイチゴ好きは遺伝子レベルの話になってきそうです。

 

こうやって今、イチゴについてつぶやいている自分も間違いなくイチゴに取りつかれているわけですが、それよりなにより、無意識にイチゴ大福に手を伸ばしているのはかなりヤバい…。いただきます。

It’s gotten warmer, hasn’t it? Today is the middle day of a three-day weekend, and perhaps because the weather here in Nagoya is so nice, I can’t help but notice that people walking around town seem to have a certain spring in their step. Amidst all this, I, Staff F, am heading to work today, but it’s not just the people who seem to be in high spirits—the supermarket aisles were also bursting with springtime vibrancy.

 

Right now, the vibrant red of the strawberries on the shelves is practically begging me to buy them. I gave in to the temptation and picked some up yesterday, but I’ve noticed there are a lot of new varieties of strawberries around these days. The number of varieties has increased without me even realizing it. From high-end strawberries sold in mist boxes to special features on strawberry desserts in afternoon magazines, I’ve been amazed lately by the sheer variety, how they’re being promoted, and the different ways to enjoy them. Have any of you tried any of these new varieties yet?

 

Japan boasts an enormous variety of strawberries, with about 300 different cultivars. Some say that more than half of the world’s strawberry varieties originate from Japan, making us a true “strawberry superpower.” Even now, breeders across the country are constantly working on new varieties, and unique new cultivars are being introduced one after another. This is just my personal observation, but I feel like I’ve been seeing new varieties in stores almost every year lately.

 

That said, where does this Japanese love for strawberries come from?

It’s hard to pinpoint a single reason—perhaps it’s the “nutritional benefits” like high levels of vitamin C and other beauty-boosting nutrients, or the “taste” with its perfect balance of sweet and tart flavors, or the “visual appeal” of the striking contrast between the red fruit and green leaves, and the cute shapes like heart-shaped cross-sections when sliced. Maybe it’s the combination of all these factors that makes them so irresistible and keeps us coming back for more.

 

By the way, even in Japan, there are records of strawberries in the ancient legal code from the Heian period, the “Engishiki,” indicating that wild strawberries were eaten back then. It seems the love for strawberries dates all the way back to the Heian period, so perhaps, ultimately, this love for strawberries is a matter of genetics.

 

As I’m sitting here rambling about strawberries right now, I’m definitely obsessed with them myself, but more than anything, the fact that I’m unconsciously reaching for a strawberry daifuku is pretty bad, isn’t it? (laughs) I’m going to dig in…
