今日、お掃除しながらふと目に留まった後ろ姿。「あら、こんな後ろ姿だったかしら？」と、二度見してしまいました。

 

 

 

片足をひょいと上げた姿はなんとも可愛いらしいではありませんか。こちらは「墨池」といいまして、お習字などで使う墨を入れておくものになります。もちろん正面から見た顔も可愛らしいのですが、意外と店内にある品の後ろ姿や裏側をじっくり見たことはなかったかもしれません。

 

他に「後ろ姿が印象的な有名作品」なにがあったかな…と、パッと思いついたのは、菱川師宣の《見返り美人図》だったのですが、調べていると、フェルメール「後ろ姿の少女」からミロのビーナスの後ろ姿の画像まで辿りついてしまいました。

調べているうちになぜか後ろ姿が描かれている女性像ばかりになってしまったのは、女性が描かれることが圧倒的に多いからかどうかは定かではありませんが、画家が後ろ姿を描くのには理由があるようでして、まあ私のような凡人にはよく分かりませんが、正面では見せない仕草や背中のライン、服の落ち方など、後ろ姿には人物の性格や空気感が現れるのだそうで…。

 

それはさておき、私が調べていて気づいたことは、裸婦の後ろ姿はどれも肩甲骨が美しいということ。

「後ろ姿美人」なんて言葉もありますが、後ろ姿には、思うより年齢がにじみ出ております…。以前、何気なく撮ってもらった自分の後ろ姿の写真を見た時のこと。しっかり姿勢を正しているつもりだったのに、丸まった背中に前傾した頭。思わず目を背けてしまったことを思い出しました。

脂肪は年齢と共に蓄積されやすくなりますが、もともと脂肪がつきづらい背中に贅肉がつくと、とてもとても老けた印象になるのです。それ以来、日常の中で“姿勢を整えること”を意識するようになりました。絵画の中の女性たちがそうであるように、美しい背中づくりのカギは肩甲骨にあると言っても過言ではありません。

 

骨董品の中にも、表は整えてあっても、裏側はちょっと雑だったりすることがあります。でもそれが骨董品となると、何百年も残って「味」になっていくのかもしれません。

ということは、もう少し時が経てば、私の雑なところも「味ですね」と言われるのかも？それなら、もう少し雑でもいいかと思えてきました（笑）

Today, while cleaning, I caught sight of a back view that caught my eye. “Oh my, did it really look like this from behind?” I found myself looking twice.

The way it had one leg casually lifted up was utterly adorable, wasn’t it? This is called a “sumizome-ike,” a container for holding ink used in calligraphy and such. Of course, the front view is also charming, but I realized I’d never really taken the time to look closely at the back or underside of items in the store before.

What other famous works feature memorable backs? The first thing that popped into my head was Hishikawa Moronobu’s “The Beauty Looking Back.” But as I looked into it, I ended up tracing images from Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring” to the back view of the Venus de Milo.

I’m not sure if the fact that my search ended up focusing almost exclusively on female figures depicted from behind is because women are overwhelmingly more often the subjects of such paintings, but it seems there’s a reason artists depict the back view. Well, it’s beyond the comprehension of an ordinary person like me, but apparently, the back view reveals the character’s personality and aura through gestures not seen from the front, the line of the back, the drape of the clothing, and so on…

Anyway, what struck me during my research was how beautifully defined the shoulder blades are in every nude female back view.

There’s even a phrase, “beautiful from behind,” but the back view reveals more about age than you might think… I recall seeing a photo of my own back taken casually some time ago. I thought I was standing perfectly straight, but there I was: hunched back, head tilted forward. I remember looking away immediately.

Fat tends to accumulate more easily with age, but when excess fat settles on the back—an area that naturally resists fat—it creates an incredibly aged impression. Since then, I’ve consciously made an effort to “correct my posture” in daily life. It’s no exaggeration to say that, just like the women in paintings, the key to a beautiful back lies in the shoulder blades.

Even with antiques, sometimes the front is meticulously maintained, but the back is a bit rough. But perhaps that’s why they become antiques – surviving for centuries, developing that “character.”

So, maybe if a little more time passes, people will say my rough edges have “character”? If that’s the case, I’m starting to think it’s okay to be a bit more rough around the edges (laugh).
