お店の花がもう咲き始めてしまったんですが、品種はさだかではないのですが、何という品種でしょうかね…。桜は、暖かさ貯金が約400℃でつぼみが花を開かせるそうなので、400℃に達成した認定してもよいってことでしょうか笑。

 

 

 

 

ところで、先日のスタッフＴさんが梅の情報を流してくれたので、梅は？と気になり調べてたところ、梅の花は暖かさ貯金が約300～400℃で開花がはじまるそうです。

春の訪れを感じさせてくれる「梅の花」と「桜の花」。どちらも同じ季節に咲く日本を代表する花ですが、実は咲くタイミングには少し違いがあるようですね。

まだ空気がひんやりとしている2月ごろ、街を歩いていると、時々梅の花を見かけることがありますが、寒さが残る中でも、凛と咲き始めるのが梅の花の特徴のようで、なんだかこの時期の梅には少し身の引き締まる思いがします。

 

桜の花はというともう少し暖かくなってから。春の暖かさ感じられる３月下旬から４月にかけて、一気に花を咲かせまが、どうしてこのような違いがあるのでしょうか。

梅の花は、「寒さをしっかり経験すること」で、春に咲く準備を整える性質を持っているそうです。冬のあいだに十分な冷たい空気に触れることで、花のつぼみが目を覚まし、春の訪れを待つ状態になります。そして、少しずつ暖かい日が増えてくると「そろそろ咲いてもいいよ」という合図を受け取って、花を開かせていきます。つまり、梅の花は「冬の寒さ」と「春のやさしい暖かさ」、どちらも必要とする花のようですね。

 

一方で、桜の花は梅よりも「暖かさ」に敏感な花のようです。もちろん桜も冬の寒さを経験してから春を待ちますが、実際に咲き始めるスイッチは、その後に訪れる気温の上昇です。春らしい暖かい日が何日も続くことで、「もう春が来たんだ」と感じ取り一斉に咲き始めます。このため、まだ肌寒さが残る頃に静かに咲く梅に対して、桜は暖かさが増してきたタイミングで、まるで春の訪れを祝うかのように華やかに咲き誇るのですが、すでに桜も待ち遠しくなってきましたね。

それぞれの咲き方の違いを知ると、道ばたに咲く花たちがまた少し愛おしく見えてくるかもしれませんので、これからの季節どちらの花の移ろいも目が離せませんね。この春は、ぜひそんな違いにも目を向けながらお花見を楽しんでみいものです。

The flowers at the shop have already started blooming, but I’m not sure what variety they are… I wonder what kind they are… Cherry blossoms apparently need about 400°C of accumulated warmth before their buds open, so I guess we can say they’ve reached that 400°C mark now, right? lol.

 

By the way, staff member T shared some plum blossom info the other day, so I wondered, “What about plum blossoms?” and looked it up. Apparently, plum blossoms start blooming when the accumulated warmth reaches about 300-400°C.

Plum blossoms and cherry blossoms both herald the arrival of spring. They’re both representative Japanese flowers that bloom in the same season, but it seems there’s actually a slight difference in their blooming timing.

Around February, when the air is still crisp, you occasionally spot plum blossoms while walking through town. It seems a characteristic of plum blossoms is that they begin to bloom with a dignified resilience even amidst lingering cold. Somehow, the plums at this time of year make you feel a bit more alert.

 

As for cherry blossoms, they bloom a bit later, once it warms up more. They burst into bloom all at once from late March to April, when you can really feel spring’s warmth. So, why is there this difference?

Plum blossoms, it seems, have a nature that requires “thoroughly experiencing the cold” to prepare for blooming in spring. Exposure to sufficient cold air during winter awakens the flower buds, putting them in a state of waiting for spring’s arrival. Then, as warmer days gradually increase, they receive the signal that “it’s about time to bloom” and open their flowers. In other words, plum blossoms seem to be flowers that need both “winter’s cold” and “spring’s gentle warmth.”

 

On the other hand, cherry blossoms seem more sensitive to warmth than plum blossoms. While cherry blossoms also experience winter cold before awaiting spring, the actual trigger for them to start blooming is the subsequent rise in temperature. When several days of distinctly spring-like warmth persist, they sense “spring has truly arrived” and burst into bloom all at once. Thus, while plum blossoms bloom quietly when a chill still lingers, cherry blossoms bloom magnificently just as warmth increases, as if celebrating spring’s arrival. I’m already longing for the cherry blossoms…

Understanding the difference in how each blooms might make the flowers lining the streets seem a little more precious.

 

In Nagoya, this year too, the plum blossoms reach their peak from late February to early March, followed closely by the swelling buds of the cherry blossoms.
