昨日今日とスッキリと晴れ渡りました。大学入学共通テストを受験される受験生の皆さまもご家族も、お天気が良いだけで少し気持ちも軽くなるのではないでしょうか。

 

 

さてさて、もはや解けはしないのに、毎年気になってしまうのが、その試験内容。ムーミンやブラタモリなど、毎年共通テストの試験内容が話題になりますが、なんと今年は私も愛読しておりました、ベルばら！

「歴史総合、世界史探究」で、フランス革命を描いた漫画「ベルサイユのばら」（ベルばら）が引用されたというではありませんか！

過去にも有名な漫画・アニメ作品としては、「妖怪ウォッチ」「ゲゲゲの鬼太郎」などが引用されたことがあるようですが、センター試験の頃から、定期的にこの手のメディアを使った問題が出されていた印象があります。思うに、出題者が親と同じ年代とか、それ以上とかだからなんでしょうか…。

 

1972年から「週刊マーガレット」に連載された、池田理代子先生の「ベルサイユのばら」は、革命前後のフランスを舞台に王族や貴族、従者らの愛を描いた物語で、アニメ化、宝塚歌劇団で舞台化もされた人気漫画であります。

その「ベルばら」が登場したのは、フランス革命に関する問題。貴族の娘に生まれながらも将軍の父に男性として育てられたオスカルが「普通の女性として育っていたら、15歳のころには嫁がされていたのか」などと父に問いただす場面が引用され、フランス革命で市民の側についたオスカルが「バスティーユへ!!」と民衆を率いて出撃する名場面も掲載されたのだそう。

 

受験生の方々も悲喜こもごもで、ベルばらが好きな方にとってはサービス問題とも言えなくもないですが、この作品を見たとて、フィクションの部分もあって、回答に有利になる事はないと思うのですが、頭の中で絵を想像できるのは、記憶に残りやすいのかなと思います。

 

以前テレビで、東大生が影響受けた漫画ランキングで、「キングダムを読んだおかげて世界史の中国の戦国の七雄(秦・楚・斉・燕・趙・魏・韓)を苦も無く言えるようになった」と言っているのを見ましたが、私もその昔、横山光輝先生の三国志や戦国時代の漫画を読んだおかげて歴史の授業が楽しかった記憶があります。

小説でも影響を受けますが、やはり漫画の方が頭にスッと入ってくる気がするので影響力は大きいと思います。歴史は単に出来事を暗記するのではなく、時間の流れを追って眺めると、わりとすんなり頭に入るのです。この事件はなぜ起こったか、その結果どうなったか、どの人物がどう関係したか、それらを知ることで、歴史を知る楽しさに気づくきっかけになったなとも思うのです。

 

「漫画ばかり読んで、勉強しなさい！」と言われて過ごしたあの頃…。まさかこんな日が来るとは！

The skies have been clear and bright these past two days. For all the students taking the National Center Test for University Admissions and their families, the fine weather alone must be lifting your spirits a little.

 

Now then, even though I can’t solve them anymore, I still find myself curious about the test content every year. Things like Moomin and Bura Torimori become topics of discussion regarding the test content annually, but this year, it was none other than The Rose of Versailles—a manga I myself loved reading!

In the “History Comprehensive, World History Exploration” section, the manga “The Rose of Versailles” (Berubara), which depicts the French Revolution, was referenced!

In the past, famous manga and anime like “Yokai Watch” and “GeGeGe no Kitaro” have been referenced too. I get the impression that since the days of the old Center Test, questions using this kind of media have appeared periodically. I wonder if it’s because the test creators are the same age as the parents, or even older…

 

Serialized in Weekly Margaret from 1972, Riyoko Ikeda’s “The Rose of Versailles” is a popular manga depicting the love lives of royalty, nobles, and their attendants against the backdrop of pre- and post-revolutionary France. It was adapted into an anime and staged by the Takarazuka Revue.

This “Rose of Versailles” appeared in a question about the French Revolution. A scene where Oscar, born to an aristocratic family but raised as a man by her general father, confronts him asking, “If I had been raised as a normal woman, would I have been married off by the age of 15?” was quoted. It also featured the famous scene where Oscar, siding with the citizens during the French Revolution, leads the people shouting, “To the Bastille!!”

 

For exam takers, it was a mix of joy and sorrow. While fans of “The Rose of Versailles” might see it as a bonus question, I doubt reading the manga—which contains fictional elements—would actually help with the answers. Still, being able to visualize the scenes might make them stick in your memory better.

 

I once saw on TV a ranking of manga that influenced Tokyo University students, where someone said, “Thanks to reading Kingdom, I can easily name the Seven Warring States of China in world history (Qin, Chu, Qi, Yan, Zhao, Wei, Han).” I also remember enjoying history class back in the day because I read Mitsuteru Yokoyama’s manga adaptations of the Three Kingdoms and the Warring States period.

Novels influence me too, but manga just seems to sink in more easily, so I think its impact is greater. History isn’t just about memorizing events; when you follow the flow of time and look at the bigger picture, it actually sticks in your mind quite smoothly. Understanding why an event happened, what the outcome was, and how specific figures were involved—learning these things made me realize the joy of discovering history.

 

Back then, I was always told, “Stop reading manga and study!”… Who would’ve thought this day would come!

It’s never too late, even after exams. I really, really, really want you to read them.
