現在、東京都品川区の寺田倉庫にて開催されておりまして、

「ガウディ没後100年公式事業 　NAKED meets ガウディ展」 へ行った知人より画像が届きまして。

昨年も、ここ名古屋で開催されましたガウディ展訪れたのですが、今回開催のガウディ展は、ガウディ没後100年となる今年2026年、そしてサグラダ・ファミリアのメインタワー「イエスの塔」完成を記念し、公式展覧会として東京を皮切りに開催されるようです。

今回のガウディ展はガウディの手記や直筆の書簡、彼が使用した制作道具をはじめ、未公開の資料や模型、スケッチなど、学術的にも極めて貴重なコレクションを網羅的に展示しており、これほど多くの財団所蔵資料が同時公開されるのは世界初のようであります。また、展示のほかにも大人から子どもまで楽しめる参加型アートも体験できるようでして、これらを通してガウディ建築の魅力にも触れられるようになっているそうです。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

さて、そのサグラダ・ファミリア聖堂ですが、2025年に聖母被昇天の礼拝堂が完成し、ガウディの没後100年にあたる今年2026年は、高さ172.5mあるメインタワー「イエス・キリストの塔」が完成します。その後、3つのファサードのうち最後となる「栄光のファサード」などの建設にとりかかり、全体が完成するのは10年後の2034年ごろと見込まれています。

 

 

 

 

それにしてもなぜそんなに建設に時間がかかるのか不思議に思うところですが、そもそもサグラダ・ファミリアの全貌は設計者であるガウディの頭の中にしかなかったとも言われており、頼りにできるのはたった1枚のスケッチのみ。ガウディ亡き後弟子たちがこしらえた数々の資料もスペイン内戦で焼失してしまうというアクシデントに見舞われ、常に手探り状態で建設を進めていくしかなかったようですね。

 

このところ重要な役割を担う日本人建築家（彫刻家）外尾悦郎氏の活躍などがTVなどでこのところ取り上げられていますが、確かにひとつひとつの彫刻の作成など手探りですすめている様子などをみますと、完成にかける情熱と執念もガウディの時代から現在に一緒に受け継がれているひとつのような気もしました。

 

少し長く生きてきた昭和世代ですと、完成には実に300年以上を要するともきいていて、自分たちが生きている間にサグラダ・ファミリアの完成を見ることはないのだろうなぁと、思っていたと思うんですね笑。なにせ建設が進まないことにより、着工からすでに長い年月が経過しているため、新しい部分を作ると同時に完成部分の補修もしなければならない始末ですので、完成なんてそんなそんな笑、なんて。

 

 

 

 

 

 

一体どうしてそんなに早く完成を見込めるようになったのか。その理由には大きく二つあるようです。

 

一つ目はさきほどサグラダ・ファミリアの工事がなかなか進まない理由としても挙げた建設方針の手探り状態が、近年のIT技術を駆使することでだいぶクリアになったこと。コンピュータのない時代には模造実験のための模型も手作業で作らなくてはなりませんでしたが、今は3Dプリンターやコンピュータによる設計技術も進んでいるため、進捗はかなりスムーズになってきました。

 

二つ目は、サグラダ・ファミリアを建設する予算が観光客増加によって潤沢になってきたことでしょうか。というのも、サグラダ・ファミリアを語る上で欠かせないポイントが建設費です。サグラダ・ファミリアは贖罪教会という特性から、その建設予算は人々の寄附によってまかなわれてきました。かつては工事費の不足により建設が遅れてしまっていた側面も大きかったようです。

 

それにしても生きている間にサグラダ・ファミリアの完成を目にすることなんて、昭和世代の自分には、実は突然すぎてピンとこないところでして。今現在のところはちょっと驚きの「えっ？」しか言葉はでないのすが、いよいよ完成した全貌をみることになると、自分の生きてきた時の流れと時代の流れとかいろんなものがどーっと押し寄せてきて、きっと感嘆の「えー－－－っ」の大きな声となると思います。

 

ということで、2026年いよいよあらわれる「イエス・キリストの塔」、きっとどこかでみているガウディと一緒にみんなでカウントダウンといきましましょうか。

Currently being held at Terada Warehouse in Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo,

I received images from an acquaintance who visited the “Official Centennial Commemoration of Gaudí’s Death: NAKED meets Gaudí Exhibition.”

 

This is said to be something Gaudí drew.

 

I also visited the Gaudi exhibition held here in Nagoya last year. This current Gaudi exhibition, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Gaudi’s death in 2026 and the completion of the Sagrada Familia’s main tower, the “Tower of Jesus,” appears to be an official exhibition starting in Tokyo.

 

This exhibition comprehensively displays an academically invaluable collection, including Gaudí’s notebooks, handwritten letters, his actual tools, previously unseen materials, models, and sketches. It appears to be the first time in the world that so many foundation-held materials are being exhibited simultaneously. Additionally, beyond the displays, there are participatory art experiences enjoyable for both adults and children, allowing visitors to engage with the charm of Gaudí’s architecture.

 

Now, regarding the Sagrada Família Cathedral itself: the Chapel of the Assumption is scheduled for completion in 2025. This year, 2026, marking the 100th anniversary of Gaudí’s death, will see the completion of the main tower, the “Tower of Jesus Christ,” standing 172.5 meters tall. After that, construction will begin on the final of the three façades, the “Façade of Glory,” with the entire structure expected to be completed around 2034, ten years later.

 

It’s puzzling why construction takes so long. It’s said that the entire vision of the Sagrada Família existed only in the mind of its designer, Gaudí, with just a single sketch to rely on. After Gaudí’s death, the numerous documents compiled by his disciples were tragically lost in the Spanish Civil War. Consequently, construction has always proceeded by trial and error.

 

Recently, the work of Japanese architect (and sculptor) Etsuro Tono, who plays a crucial role, has been featured on TV. Seeing how they proceed step by step, even with each individual sculpture, I felt that the passion and determination to complete it seem to be something passed down from Gaudí’s time to the present.

 

For us Showa-era folks who’ve lived a bit longer, we’d heard completion might take over 300 years. I think we all figured we wouldn’t live to see the Sagrada Familia finished, haha.

After all, construction progress has been slow. So much time has passed since groundbreaking that they have to repair completed sections while building new ones. Finishing? Yeah, right, haha.

So imagine the public uproar when it was announced that completion is now scheduled for around 150 years after groundbreaking—half the originally estimated timeframe! Furthermore, the video showing the projected completed design, announced for a 2026 completion, far exceeded our imagination, sparking a second wave of astonishment worldwide.

 

So how did they suddenly become so confident about finishing early?
There seem to be two major reasons.

 

First, the trial-and-error phase in construction methods—previously cited as a reason for the slow progress—has been largely overcome through the use of modern IT technology. In the pre-computer era, models for simulation experiments had to be crafted by hand. Now, with advances in 3D printing and computer-aided design, progress has become considerably smoother.

 

The second reason is likely the increased budget for Sagrada Família construction, fueled by rising tourist numbers. This is crucial because construction costs are central to the Sagrada Família narrative. Due to its nature as an expiatory church, its construction budget has always relied on public donations. In the past, insufficient funds were a major factor in delays.

 

 

Even so, witnessing the completion of the Sagrada Família within my lifetime feels so sudden and surreal to someone of my generation, born in the Showa era. Right now, I can only utter a surprised “Huh?” But when I finally see the completed structure in all its glory, I imagine the flow of my own life and the passage of time will wash over me all at once, surely eliciting a loud, amazed “Wooooow!”

So, let’s count down together with Gaudí, who’s surely watching from somewhere, to the “Tower of Jesus Christ” finally appearing in 2026.
