日本時間で明日１１日未明に二人の日本人、坂口志文氏と北川進氏がノーベル賞授賞式に参加されます。

お二人は先日ノーベル博物館を訪れ、博物館のレストラン「Bistro Nobel」の椅子の裏に、受賞者恒例のサインをされていました。ニュースなどでよく見る光景で、かなり昔から続くイベントなのかと思っていましたが、歴史は案外新しいものでした。

 

最初のきっかけは、２００１年にノーベル博物館が建てられた際、当時アメリカの大統領だったクリントン大統領が博物館を訪れ、座った椅子に、博物館のスタッフが記念に「ビル・クリントン」と書いたのが始まりだとか。椅子のサイン第一号の名前はノーベル賞受賞者ではなく、書いたのも本人ではなかったのですね。２番目にサインした人がかなり気になります…。ノーベル賞の受賞枠を獲得するのは至難の業で、その競争の激しさから、ノーベル賞の「椅子取りゲーム」と呼ぶ人もいるようです。

 

現在２００名以上のサインが椅子に残っており、レントランの椅子として使われています。サインを見ようと椅子を裏返す人も多く、人気？のサインがある椅子はショーケースなどに飾られているのだとか。

 

受賞者は博物館で椅子の裏にサインするだけではなく、博物館へ記念品の寄贈をします。自分の研究に関係する品物を贈る人もいれば、全く関係ないものを贈る人もいるそうで、研究者の個性が現れるといいます。生理学・医学賞を受賞した山中伸弥さんは実験器具や本を寄贈しました。

 

今回受賞された北川進氏は新材料「金属有機構造体（MOF）を寄贈し、坂口志文氏は漫画「はたらく細胞」の英語版と母手作りのネズミの人形、妻から贈られたネズミの置物を寄贈されたとのこと。やはり個性が現れますね。

坂口氏によると、研究の成果は人間だけで成し遂げられたものではなく、実験に使った動物たちのおかげでもあるとのこと。

また２０１５年から連載が始まった清水茜さんの漫画「はやらく細胞」には坂口氏が発見した制御性T細胞のキャラクターも登場しているそうです。

 

「はたらく細胞」の映画版は観たのですが、制御性T細胞の印象が残っていないので、原作の方に多く登場するのでしょうか。歴史漫画などもそうですが、教科書などで覚えるのが難しい細胞や免疫などキャラクター化すると覚えやすいですね。悪役とヒーローの立場が曖昧なところも面白く、坂口氏も人間の体の免疫細胞が体にとって味方にも敵にもなるところに魅力を感じたと仰っていました。

 

人間の体の仕組みはまだまだ未知の世界が広がっています。「はたらく細胞」の映画を観たあとは、こんなにも頑張ってくれている体に感謝しなければと思いつつ、結局欲望に負けてしまいます。

年末に向け忘年会などの様々な行事が目白押しですが、体を労わることも忘れないよう気をつけます。

Early tomorrow morning, November 11th Japan time, two Japanese individuals, Mr. Shimon Sakaguchi and Mr. Susumu Kitagawa, will attend the Nobel Prize award ceremony.

The two recently visited the Nobel Museum and signed the backs of chairs at the museum’s restaurant, “Bistro Nobel,” following the tradition for laureates. It’s a scene often seen in the news, and I had assumed it was an event with quite a long history, but its origins are surprisingly recent.

 

It apparently began in 2001 when the Nobel Museum was built. Then-U.S. President Bill Clinton visited the museum and sat in a chair. Museum staff wrote “Bill Clinton” on it as a memento. So the first name signed on a chair wasn’t a Nobel laureate, and it wasn’t even written by the person himself. I’m quite curious about who signed second… Winning a Nobel Prize is an incredibly difficult feat, and due to the fierce competition, some people refer to it as the Nobel Prize “musical chairs.”

 

Currently, over 200 signatures remain on the chairs, which are used as rental chairs. Many people flip the chairs over to see the signatures, and chairs with popular signatures are apparently displayed in showcases.

 

Winners not only sign the underside of a chair at the museum but also donate a commemorative item. Some donate items related to their research, while others donate completely unrelated things, reflecting the researcher’s personality. Shinya Yamanaka, who won the Physiology or Medicine Prize, donated experimental equipment and books.

 

This year’s laureate, Susumu Kitagawa, donated the new material “metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).” Shimon Sakaguchi donated the English edition of the manga “Cells at Work!”, a handmade mouse doll from his mother, and a mouse figurine gifted by his wife. Individuality certainly shines through.

According to Sakaguchi, research achievements aren’t accomplished by humans alone; they’re also thanks to the animals used in experiments.

Furthermore, Sakaguchi’s discovery of regulatory T cells appears as a character in Akane Shimizu’s manga “Working Cells,” which began serialization in 2015.

 

I watched the movie version of “Cells at Work!”, but I don’t recall the regulatory T cells making much of an impression. Perhaps they appear more prominently in the original manga? Like historical manga, turning cells and immune concepts—which are hard to grasp from textbooks—into characters makes them easier to remember. The ambiguity between villain and hero roles is also intriguing. Dr. Sakaguchi mentioned he found it fascinating how immune cells in the human body can act as both allies and enemies.

 

The human body’s mechanisms still hold vast unknown territories. After watching the “Cells at Work” movie, I feel I should be grateful to my body for working so hard, yet I inevitably succumb to my desires.

As year-end approaches, various events like year-end parties are packed together, but I’ll try to remember to take care of my body too.
