名古屋は本日も清々しい秋晴れとなっております。動いていると良い具合に体が温まり、ウオーキングなどにはもってこいの季節ですね。昨日に引き続き鮮やかに色づいたイチョウ並木に出くわしました。千種区にある「千種公園」です。スマホで写真を撮っていると、他にも撮影している方がちらほらいらっしゃいました。この景色は撮りたくなりますよねぇと思いながら撮影している人たちを見ると、皆さん立派な一眼レフのカメラを構えていらっしゃいました。恐らく私のように通りすがりで思わず撮影、というのではなく、このイチョウ並木を撮影するために来てたのでしょう。

パシャパシャと何も考えずにシャッターを押している私とは違い、撮るたびに写りを確認されたりしているので、「写真見せてもらっていいですか？」と声をかけたい衝動に駆られましたが、その勇気はありませんでした…。

 

 

 

千種公園のイチョウ並木は名古屋市の「まちなみデザイン２０選」（２０１２年より２年ごとに選定）にも選ばれたことがあります。高く黄色くそびえ立つイチョウの木は遠くからでも目に付くので、思わず公園の方に足が向いてしまいます。千種公園は昭和４５年に名古屋陸軍造幣廠の跡地の一部に作られました。約２００ｍに渡るイチョウ並木の他にも６月中旬に咲くユリも有名です。

 

愛知県には香嵐渓や犬山寂光院など紅葉の名所はたくさんありますが、紅葉の時期はそう長くはないため、人気スポットでは混雑は免れません。目的地までたどり着くまでに渋滞に巻き込まれることもあり、帰るとどっと疲れが出るなんてこともあります。私は年々人混みが苦手になり、なるべく人のいない場所や時間を狙って外出するようになりました。今日のイチョウ並木なんて最高でした。有名ではないけれども「お気に入りの紅葉スポット」をお持ちの方も多いのではないしょうか。私もお気に入りの「カエデの木」が近所の公園にあります。真っ赤に色づくのを毎年楽しみにしています。

ただいつも「モミジ？カエデ？」と混乱します。モミジは切れ込みが深く小さめ、名前の由来は「布を植物の色素で染める際に揉みだし、水に色がしみ出す様子」を表す「もみづ」から、カエデは切れ込みが浅く、カエルの手に似ていることが名前の由来とされています。しかし植物学的にはカエデ属の中にモミジも含まれていて、イタヤカエデもイロハモミジもカエデ属なのだそうです。現在では「もみじ」という言葉には紅葉した樹木という意味もあるため、色づいたイタカエデを見て、綺麗なもみじ！と言っても何も恥じることはないそうなので、安心しました。ちなみに英語では全て「メープル」だそうです。

 

話が逸れましたが、愛知県であまり混んでいない？けれど紅葉の美しい穴場スポットを検索してみました。

豊根村･･･新豊根ダム

大府市･･･大倉公園

一宮市･･･萬葉公園

瀬戸市･･･雲興寺、定光寺公園

岡崎市･･･かおれ渓谷

西尾市･･･西尾市歴史公園

豊田市･･･松平郷、石畳足湯、木瀬発注神社、王滝渓谷

 

訪れたことがない場所が愛知県にはまだまだありそうで楽しみです。

Nagoya is blessed with another crisp, clear autumn day today. Being active warms you up just right—it’s the perfect season for walking. Continuing from yesterday, I came across a row of ginkgo trees vividly colored. This is Chikusa Park in Chikusa Ward. As I took photos with my smartphone, I noticed several others snapping pictures here and there. Seeing them shoot while thinking, “This view is irresistible to photograph,” I noticed they were all holding impressive DSLR cameras. Unlike me, who was just passing by and spontaneously taking pictures, they had probably come specifically to photograph this ginkgo avenue.

Unlike me, mindlessly clicking away, they checked the results after each shot. I was tempted to ask, “Can I see your photos?” but I didn’t have the courage…

 

The ginkgo tree-lined path at Chikusa Park has been selected for Nagoya City’s “20 Selected Urban Designs” (selected every two years since 2012). The tall, yellow ginkgo trees stand out even from a distance, drawing your feet towards the park. Chikusa Park was created in 1970 on part of the former site of the Nagoya Army Mint. Besides the approximately 200-meter-long ginkgo avenue, the lilies blooming in mid-June are also famous.

 

Aichi Prefecture has many famous autumn foliage spots like Korankei and Jikkōin Temple in Inuyama, but the peak season is short, so popular spots inevitably get crowded. You might get caught in traffic before even reaching your destination, and the exhaustion hits you hard on the way back. Year after year, I’ve grown less fond of crowds and now try to go out when and where fewer people are around. Today’s ginkgo avenue was absolutely perfect. Many people probably have their own “favorite autumn leaf viewing spots” that aren’t famous, right? I have my favorite “maple tree” in a nearby park. I look forward to seeing it turn bright red every year.

But I always get confused: “Is it a momiji or a kaede?” Momiji leaves have deep, small lobes, and the name comes from “momizu” – describing the process of rubbing fabric with plant dyes to bleed color into the water. Kaede leaves have shallow lobes, and the name originates from their resemblance to a frog’s hand. But botanically, both Japanese maples and maple trees belong to the Acer genus. Both Japanese maples and Japanese sweet maples are Acer species. Nowadays, the word “momiji” also means any tree with autumn colors, so seeing a colored Japanese sweet maple and saying, “What a beautiful momiji!” is perfectly fine—I’m relieved to know that. Incidentally, in English, they’re all called “maples.”

 

But I digress. I searched for less crowded yet beautiful hidden spots for autumn leaves in Aichi Prefecture.

 

Shinshiro City… Aichi Prefectural Forest, Hōraiji Mountain

Toyone Village… Shin-Toyone Dam

Ōbu City… Ōkura Park

Ichinomiya City… Manyō Park

Seto City… Unkoji Temple, Jōkōji Park

Okazaki City… Kaore Valley

Nishio City… Nishio City History Park

Toyota City… Matsudaira Village, Stone-Paved Footbath, Kise Hakushaku Shrine, Otaki Valley

 

It seems there are still many places in Aichi Prefecture I haven’t visited yet, which I’m looking forward to.
