さて、こちらで働かせていただくようになって、いつも目にして気になっておりましたが、今日はお掃除をしながら、あらためて店内の李朝家具に見入っております。

 

韓国ドラマ(とりわけ時代もの)がお好きな方なら、おそらく映像の中で一度は目にしたことがある「李朝家具」。

李朝家具は韓国の高級官僚、両班(ヤンバン)が主に使用していたとされる家具で、古くは朝鮮王朝時代に作られた歴史ある家具です。一見日本の和家具と雰囲気が似ていますが、各所に韓国の伝統的な意匠が見受けられます。

落ち着いた雰囲気で、日本人にとってどこか親しみを感じさせるその佇まいは、日本の民芸運動の父・柳宗悦など、多くの文化人に愛されてきました。

 

李朝とは、500年以上も朝鮮半島を支配した朝鮮最後の王朝を指します。李朝家具とはすなわち、「李王家が君臨した朝鮮王朝時代の家具」のことを表しているんですね。この「李王家が君臨した朝鮮王朝」を短くし、「李朝」と呼ばれています。

李王家が朝鮮半島を支配していたのは、14世紀末～20世紀初頭までのこと。なんと李王家の繁栄は500年もの長きにわたって続いていたということになります。日本の江戸時代でも300年ですので、あまりに壮大な歴史にちょっとめまいがしそうですね。
この朝鮮王朝時代には、印刷事業や教育機関の進化、また、磁器やパンソリに代表される芸術・芸能の発展など、さまざまな文化が育まれました。そんな豊かな文化を支えたのが、「両班(ヤンバン)」と呼ばれる高級官僚の存在。両班は文臣である「文班」と武臣である「武班」の2つに分けられますが、特に文班の官僚たちの間では、「清雅(せいが)」「簡潔」な生き方が理想とされていました。清雅とは、国の官僚として常に清らかであり、貴族として雅であること。そして簡潔は、簡素で潔いという意味です。彼らはこの思想を家具にも反映させ、その結果、すっきりとした見た目ながら随所に気品を感じる李朝家具のデザインが生まれました。

 

さて、李朝家具のデザインには、箪笥であっても書棚のような家具であっても、脚が付いているものが多いことに気づかされます。この特徴的なデザインは、韓国のオンドルの生活様式によるもの。寒さの厳しい韓国では、家屋に温突(オンドル)と言う独自の暖房システムが備わっているのが一般的でした。これはいわゆる床暖房のようなもので、熱く熱せられた床からの熱気を受けて家具が歪んだり割れたりしないよう、床から遠ざけるために脚を付けたのだそうです。

私のときめきポイントも、この脚付という点。お部屋のアクセントとなったり、なにより掃除しやすいという優秀さが魅力です。大きな家具は一度設置してしまうと、なかなか動かす機会はないですし、そうなると隙間に溜まったほこりが気になります。その点、脚付きの家具なら掃除機も、お掃除ロボットも余裕で入ることができますね。

 

こうした伝統家具が、現代の生活にも溶け込み、『なるほど、昔はこうやって使っていたのね。』と、昔ながらの生活を想像しながら使えるのはとても素敵なことですね。

Since I started working here, I have always been curious about the Yi Dynasty furniture in the store, and today, while cleaning up, I was looking at it again.

 

 

If you are a fan of Korean dramas (especially period dramas), you have probably seen Yi Dynasty furniture at least once in a movie.

Yi Dynasty furniture is said to have been used mainly by the Yangban, high-ranking Korean bureaucrats, and has a long history dating back to the Joseon Dynasty. At first glance, the furniture looks similar to Japanese-style furniture in Japan, but traditional Korean designs can be seen in various parts.

Its calm atmosphere and somewhat familiar appearance to Japanese people have made it a favorite of many cultural figures, including Muneyoshi Yanagi, the father of the Japanese folk art movement.

 

Yi Dynasty refers to the last dynasty of Korea, which ruled the Korean peninsula for more than 500 years. Yi Dynasty furniture, in other words, refers to “furniture from the Joseon Dynasty, when the Yi royal family reigned. This “Joseon dynasty under the reign of the Yi royal family” is shortened to “Yi Dynasty.

The Yi royal family ruled the Korean peninsula from the end of the 14th century to the beginning of the 20th century. What is more, the prosperity of the Yi royal family lasted for as long as 500 years. The Japanese Edo period lasted only 300 years, so the grandeur of this history makes one feel a little dizzy.
During the Joseon Dynasty, a variety of cultures were nurtured, including the evolution of printing and educational institutions, as well as the development of porcelain and the arts and performing arts represented by pansori (a type of traditional Korean folk dance). Such a rich culture was supported by the existence of high-ranking bureaucrats called “yangban. The yangban were divided into two groups: the literati, or “literati,” and the military, or “military,” and among the literati, the ideal lifestyle was one of “seiga” (simplicity and elegance). Seiga” means to be always pure as a bureaucrat of the state and elegant as an aristocrat. Conciseness means to be simple and clean. They reflected this philosophy in their furniture, resulting in Yi Dynasty furniture designs that are clean in appearance but graceful in many places.

 

Now, we notice that many Yi Dynasty furniture designs, whether chests of drawers or bookcases, have legs. This distinctive design is due to the Korean ondol lifestyle. In Korea, where it is very cold, it was common for houses to be equipped with their own heating system called ondol. This was a kind of floor heating system, and legs were attached to keep furniture away from the floor to prevent it from being distorted or cracked by the hot air from the hot floor.

My crush point is also the fact that it has legs. They are excellent for accenting the room and, above all, are easy to clean. Once a large piece of furniture is set up, you don’t have a chance to move it, and when you do, you have to worry about dust accumulating in the crevices. In this respect, furniture with legs can easily accommodate a vacuum cleaner or cleaning robot.

 

This kind of traditional furniture can be integrated into modern life, and people can use it while imagining how they used to live in the old days. It is wonderful to be able to use such traditional furniture while imagining how people used to live in the olden days.
