本日は、先日からの奈良旅のつぶやきの続編であります。それはそうと、なぜ薬師寺に来たのか？という話に戻るのですが、事の発端は、このお軸の二文字。

 

 

 

 

 

先日、店舗にてかけありましたこの掛軸

 

「不東」

 

このお軸はかつての薬師寺管主、高田好胤管主の筆であります。

この言葉、意味をおさらい致しますと、これは玄奘三蔵（三蔵法師）の残した有名なお言葉でして

「目的地であるインドへたどり着かない限り東へ戻ることはない。」という不退の決意を表す意味であります。

 

かつて玄奘三蔵は、インドへ求法の旅へ出ます。これが皆様ご存じ「西遊記」の旅であるのですが、その後、インドへの修学の末、経論や舎利、仏像を供えて17年ぶりに帰国。持ち帰った経典や論琉などをたくさん翻訳致します。その中で最も知られている「般若心経」も、実は玄奘三蔵の翻訳によるものであります。知らなかったです…。

 

そんな玄奘三蔵の求法の旅の目的は「唯識」を教えを求めることでして、その教えは弟子である慈恵大師により「法相宗」として大成、飛鳥時代道昭僧都により日本に伝来いたします。現在「法相宗」の大本山はこの薬師寺と興福寺でありますが、いまも玄奘三蔵は「法相宗」の始祖として仰がれております。

 

そして始祖と仰がれる玄奘三蔵の遺徳顕影のため建立された「玄奘三蔵院伽藍」。そしてその二文字もこちらに。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

こちらの伽藍は平成3年に建立されたものですが、ここには玄奘三蔵のご頂骨（頭部の遺骨）がお納めされております。ご頂骨は昭和17年に中国南京で発見されたようでして、その後日本にも分納され、さいたま市の慈恵寺に奉安されておりましたが、この度、ご分骨賜り、現在こちらにも奉安されているそうです。

 

 

 

 

あらためて

 

「不東」

 

先日の私の「有言実行」とは重みは全く違いますが、「不東」を「有言実行」したこの言葉の通り、しっかりと目的を果たし帰ってきた玄奘三蔵はいったいどんな気持だったのでしょう。その時の「不東」という言葉の意味をあらためてお聞きしたかったものですね。

 

「玄奘三蔵院伽藍」は、薬師寺の金堂や東塔西塔と少し離れた場所にございますのでこちらまで脚を伸ばす方はあまり。そんな伽藍に佇み、自分の「不東」と向き合う。とても静かな、そして気持ちの引き締まるひと時でもありました。

 

 

次回は、私の勝手に好きなお寺ランキング第一位のお寺へ参ります。ヒントは「天平の甍」でありますが。

Today is a continuation of the tweets from our trip to Nara from the other day. So, why did we come to Yakushiji Temple? The reason is the two words on the scroll.

 

The other day, I saw this hanging scroll in a store.

“Non-dong” (meaning “not to go east”)

This scroll was written by Yoshitane Takada, the former abbot of Yakushiji Temple.

To review the meaning of this word, it is a famous word left by Genjo Sanzo (Sanzo Hoshi).

I will not return to the East unless I reach my destination in India. This is the meaning of his determination not to retreat.

 

Genjo Sanzo once set out on a journey to India in search of Buddhism. After that, he returned to Japan after 17 years with sutras, relics, and Buddhist statues after his study in India. I will translate many of the sutras and treatises that I brought back with me. The most well-known of these, the Heart Sutra, was actually translated by Genjo Sanzo. I didn’t know that.

 

The purpose of Genjo Sanzo’s journey was to seek for the teaching of “Yidai-kyo,” which was developed into the “Hosso sect” by his disciple, Jie Daishi, and introduced to Japan by the monk Dosho during the Asuka period (710-794). Today, Yakushiji Temple and Kofukuji Temple are the main temples of the Hosso sect, and Genjo Sanzo is still revered as the founder of the sect.

 

The Genjo Sanzoin Temple was built to commemorate the legacy of Genjo Sanzo, the founder of the Hosso sect. The two characters are also shown here.

 

This temple was built in 1991, and the remains of Genjo Sanzo’s head are enshrined here. The remains were discovered in Nanjing, China, in 1942, and were later moved to Japan and enshrined at Jikeiji Temple in Saitama City, but now they are enshrined here as well.

 

 

Once again, we would like to thank the following people for their kindness.

 

 

“Fudo” means “not to go east.

 

Although the meaning of the word “non-dong” is completely different from the meaning of the word “wujihatsu,” I wonder how Genjo Sanzo must have felt when he fulfilled his goal and returned to Japan. I would like to ask him again about the meaning of the word “Fudo” at that time.

The Genjo Sanzoin Temple Complex is located at a distance from the Kondo Hall and the East and West Pagodas of Yakushiji Temple, so not many people make the effort to visit it. Standing in such a temple complex, you will be confronted with your own “Fudo”. It was a very quiet and sobering moment for me.

 

 

Next time, I will visit the temple that ranks first on my list of favorite temples. The clue is “Tenpyo-no-iraka” (Tenpyo-no-iraka).
