春先に一泊二日の小旅行で久しぶりに奈良を訪れました。

初日、興福寺国宝館で阿修羅像と再会した後、念願のある場所へ向かいました。

猿池を超えると奈良観光の新名所で若者にも人気の「ならまち」が現れます。

昔ながらの町屋が並び、新旧様々なお店が軒を連ね、お洒落なカフェや雑貨屋が並んでいます。

「中川政七商店」の奈良本店で限定品のお土産を買いました。

 

そして最終目的地であるかき氷の名店「ほうせき箱」に到着。

冷たい食べ物はあまり得意ではありませんが、こちらのかき氷はいつか食べてみたいと思っていました。

奈良の昔の方言で「おやつ」のことを「ほうせき」と呼んでいたそうで、それが店名の由来になっています。まさに宝石のように眩しくて美味しいおやつでした。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

数年前から続くかき氷ブーム。その中でも奈良はかき氷の聖地と言われ、「ほうせき箱」はその先駆者と言われています。

使われている氷は７２時間（通常は４８時間）かけて作られた純氷で、驚くほど繊細で口溶けが良く、夢中で食べ続けてしまいます。

奈良県産の新鮮な素材をふんだんに使い、季節ごとにメニューも変わるので何度でも訪れたくなります。

かき氷の歴史は古く平安時代にまで遡ります。清少納言の「枕草子」には、あてなるもの（上品なもの、良いもの）の段に「削り氷」と記されています。

さらに奈良には氷室神社という氷と深い関わりのある神社があります。

奈良時代に氷室（氷の貯蔵所）を設けて神を祀ったことに由来する伝統行事「献氷祭」が毎年５月１日行われ、全国の製氷、冷蔵業者が祈願に訪れています。

毎月１日には日没から参道を照らすように氷で作られたキャンドル「氷献灯」が配置され幻想的な世界を彩ります。

２０１４年からは、かき氷を神様に奉納し、境内いっぱいにかき氷店が並ぶ「ひむろしらゆき祭」が開催され、県外からもかき氷ファンが訪れているそうです。

梅雨の後には蒸し暑い日本の夏がやって来ます。涼を求めて訪れてみてはいかがでしょうか。

In early spring, I visited Nara for the first time in a long time on a two-day and one-night excursion.

On the first day, after reuniting with the statue of Ashura at the Kofukuji National Treasure Hall, we

headed to a place we had longed to visit.

After crossing the Monkey Pond, you will find “Naramachi,” a new sightseeing spot in Nara and popular among young people.

Lined with old-fashioned townhouses, various old and new stores, fashionable cafes, and general stores.

I bought a limited edition souvenir at the Nara main store of Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten.

 

We then arrived at our final destination, the famous shaved ice store Hosekibako.

I am not a big fan of cold food, but I had always wanted to try shaved ice here.

In the old dialect of Nara, “treats” were called “hoseki,” which is the origin of the store’s name. The treats were truly dazzling and delicious, just like jewels.

The shaved ice boom has been going on for several years. Among them, Nara is said to be the holy land of shaved ice, and Hosekibako is considered a pioneer in this field.

The ice used is pure ice that takes 72 hours (usually 48 hours) to make, and is surprisingly delicate and melt-in-your-mouth, keeping you hooked.

The menu changes with the seasons and uses many fresh ingredients from Nara Prefecture, so you will want to visit again and again.

The history of shaved ice dates back to the Heian period (794-1192). In “The Pillow Book” written by Sei Shonagon, “shaved ice” is mentioned in the section of “Aimonaru mono (elegant or good food).

In addition, there is a shrine in Nara called Himuro Shrine, which has a deep connection with ice.

The “ice offering festival,” a traditional event originating from the Nara period (710-794) when an ice storehouse was built to worship the gods, is held on May 1 every year, and ice and cold storage companies from all over Japan visit the shrine to pray.

On the first day of each month, candles made of ice, called “ice offering lanterns,” are placed to illuminate the approach to the shrine from sunset, creating a fantastic world of color.

And since 2014, the Himuroyuki Festival, where shaved ice is dedicated to the gods and shaved ice stores line the entire temple grounds, has been held, attracting shaved ice fans from outside the prefecture as well.

 

After the rainy season comes the hot and humid Japanese summer. Why not visit to cool off?

From my room at the inn, I had a panoramic view of Mount Wakakusa and the city of Nara.
