子どもの頃は８月も半ばを過ぎると夏休みが終わるのが悲しくて、ずっと８月だったらいいのにと思っていました。今は一刻も早くこの酷暑が終わって欲しいと切に願う日々です。

以前は楽しみな行事が続いたお盆休みも、今年は親の付き添いなどで瞬く間に過ぎてしまいましたが、唯一会えた友人母娘と名古屋駅でランチができました。関東在住の友人ですが、「大名古屋ビルヂングのひまわりスポットで写真を撮りたい」とのご要望。ひまわりスポット？そんなのありましたか？と探してみると「大名古屋ビルヂングの夏の風物詩」だそうです。案外地元の人は知らないというのもよくあることです。いや私だけかもしれませんが。

こんなビル街にひまわり？と思っていましたら、やはり造花でした。しかし精巧に造られた花とその量に圧倒され、年甲斐もなく若者に交じり、はしゃいで写真撮影をしました。ご存知の方も多いでしょうが一応情報として。

真昼間の炎天下に訪れましたので暑さで倒れそうでしたが、造花と分かっていても黄色いひまわりに囲まれると気分が上がり元気になるから不思議です。ひまわりのドームの中やひまわりのトンネルで映える写真が撮影できます。

夜のライトアップも幻想的で素敵なようです。暑さを避けたい方は夜に訪れてはいかがでしょうか。

さて「ひまわり」といえば、ゴッホですね。と無理矢理話を変えますが…。あまりに有名な絵の割には知識が少ないので、頭がひまわりで一杯のこの機会に調べてみました。

実はゴッホは何枚もひまわりの絵を描いていて、特に知られているのがアルル時代に描いたといわれる７枚です。７枚もあったのかと驚きですが、そのうちの一枚は芦屋の実業家・山本顧弥太氏が所蔵していました。残念なことに日本にあったその一枚は第二次世界大戦の空襲で焼失してしまったとのこと。（写真は見られるようです）

そして一枚は現在アメリカの個人が所蔵しているため、実際に目にすることができるのは残りの５枚のみ。

ロンドン・ナショナル・ギャラリーに展示されているひまわりの絵が有名ですが、こちらはアルルで実際にひまわりを見ながら描いたとされています。この絵をゴッホ自ら２枚模写したのですが、一枚はオランダのファン・ゴッホ美術館。もう一枚は新宿の損保美術館が所蔵しています。

もう一枚実際にひまわりを見て描いたとされるブルーグリーンの背景のひまわりはドイツ・ミュンヘンのノイエ・ピナコテーク美術館が所蔵し、そこの絵を模写して描いたのものがアメリカのフィラデルフィア美術館に所蔵されています。

模写といってもそれぞれ違いがあり、ゴッホが様々な技法を試していたのではと推測されています。主にクロムイエローという黄色で様々な表情のひまわりを描き分けています。ゴッホは生まれながらの天才画家だと勝手に思い込んでいたのですが、意外なことに画家を目指し始めたのが２７歳で、３３歳の時にパリで本格的に活動を始め、亡くなったのが３７歳。そんなに短い画家生活だったことが何より驚きでした。その間、絵の基礎を勉強し、他の画家の技法を研究しながら自分のスタイルを求め続けたのだとか。

人といるのが好きなのに、付き合い方が不器用で中々社会に溶け込むのは難しいところもあったようです。孤独を好む気難しい人なのかと想像していましたが、どちらかというと他人に与えることが好きで、すごく純粋な人という印象です。ひまわりの絵もアルルでゴッホが住んでいた「黄色い家」に飾って、他の画家たちとの交流の場にしたいと思っていたのではという話もあるようです。

８月末まで大阪市立美術館で「ゴッホ展　家族がつないだ画家の夢」が開催されています。ゴッホが手紙などに残した言葉を理解することで初めて彼の絵は理解できるという人もいます。来年、愛知県美術館でも開催されるとのこと。機会のある方は訪れてみてはいかがでしょうか。

When I was a child, I used to feel sad when summer vacation ended in mid-August, wishing that August would last forever. Now, I find myself desperately hoping that this intense heat will end as soon as possible.

In the past, the Obon holiday was filled with exciting events, but it passed in the blink of an eye due to accompanying my parents. However, I was able to have lunch with a friend and her daughter at Nagoya Station, the only friends I was able to meet. My friend, who lives in the Kanto region, requested, “I want to take a photo at the sunflower spot in the Nagoya Building.” Sunflower spot? Is there such a thing? When I looked it up, it turned out to be “the summer tradition of the Nagoya Building.” It’s not uncommon for locals to be unaware of such things. Or maybe it’s just me.

I thought, “Sunflowers in this skyscraper district?” But of course, they were artificial flowers. However, I was overwhelmed by the intricate design and quantity of the flowers, and I ended up joining the young people in taking photos, despite my age. Many of you may already know about this, but here’s the information anyway.

I visited during the scorching midday sun and felt like I might faint from the heat, but even knowing they were artificial flowers, being surrounded by yellow sunflowers somehow lifted my spirits and made me feel energized. You can take stunning photos inside the sunflower dome or through the sunflower tunnel.

The nighttime lighting is also said to be magical and beautiful. If you want to avoid the heat, why not visit at night?

Speaking of sunflowers, of course, Van Gogh comes to mind. I’m forcing the conversation a bit here, but… Despite how famous his paintings are, I don’t know much about them, so I took this opportunity to look into it while my mind was filled with sunflowers.

In fact, Van Gogh painted several sunflower paintings, with the seven he is said to have painted during his time in Arles being the most well-known. It’s surprising that there were seven of them, but one of them was owned by Yamamoto Komata, a businessman from Ashiya. Unfortunately, that one painting in Japan was destroyed in the air raids of World War II. (The photo is still available.)

One is currently owned by a private individual in the United States, so only the remaining five can be viewed in person.

The sunflower painting displayed at the London National Gallery is famous, but it is said to have been painted while Van Gogh was actually looking at sunflowers in Arles. Van Gogh himself made two copies of this painting, one of which is housed at the Van Gogh Museum in the Netherlands, and the other at the Sompo Museum in Shinjuku.

Even though they are copies, each one is different, and it is speculated that Van Gogh was experimenting with various techniques. He mainly used chrome yellow to depict sunflowers with various expressions. I had always assumed that Van Gogh was a natural-born genius painter, but surprisingly, he didn’t start pursuing painting until he was 27, began his career in Paris at 33, and passed away at 37. The brevity of his artistic career was the most surprising thing to me. During that time, he studied the fundamentals of painting, researched other artists’ techniques, and continued to seek his own style.

Although he enjoyed being around people, his awkward social skills made it difficult for him to blend into society. I had imagined him to be a more difficult person who preferred solitude, but rather, he seemed to be a very pure person who enjoyed giving to others. There is also a story that he wanted to display his sunflower paintings in the “Yellow House” where Van Gogh lived in Arles, as a place for interaction with other artists.

The exhibition “Van Gogh: The Artist’s Dream Connected by Family” is currently on display at the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts until the end of August. Some say that one can only truly understand his paintings by comprehending the words he left behind in his letters. It is also scheduled to be held at the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art next year. 今日も暑いですね…。

少々夏休みをいただいておりましたが、相変わらず猛暑が続いており季節が全く変わっていない感じで、何もする気が起こらず今日に至っております。そろそろ秋の気配が恋しいものですね。

今日は夏の帰省からの移動の中の方もいらっしゃるでしょうが、みなさまのこの夏休みはいかがだっだでしょうか。

両親ともに愛知県にいる地元民としては、帰省する田舎もなく、実家も車ですぐにたどり着ける近さですので、お盆休み感はあまりありません。子供の頃は夏休みに「田舎」に帰る同級生をうらやんでいたものですが、街からは人が減り、友達は帰省、いつもの電車もガラガラで、お盆は不思議な感じがしたものです。

ところでお盆は終わってしまったのですが、皆様の地域は「精霊馬（しょうりょううま）・精霊牛（しょうりょううし）」でご先祖様を迎える風習はありますでしょうか。ご存じかと思いますが、精霊馬とはご先祖様が家に帰るための乗りものなのですが、お盆になると位牌や盆花、供物を置く盆棚に ナスやキュウリで作った精霊馬、精霊牛を飾ります。

キュウリは足の速い馬に見立てられ、ご先祖様に早く帰ってきてくださいという願いが込められ、ナスは牛に見立てられ、ゆっくりとお戻りください、またお供え物をたくさん積んで帰ってもらいたいという願いが込められていると言われています。

そんな精霊馬・精霊牛ですが、近ごろのの精霊馬・精霊牛のアレンジが凄いのです。精霊馬・精霊牛職人とでも言いましょうか、気合の入ったもはやアートと言っても過言ではないものや、魔改造の作品まで、InstagramやＸなどで盛りだくさんのコレクションがアップされているのですが、それをみて感心、いや思わず笑ってしまいます。

スーパーカーにしていたり、脚の部分にモーターを付けたり、いろいろなキャラによせてみたり。某自動車メーカーの投稿では、行きは乗用車、帰りはスーパーカブの素晴らしい精霊馬、精霊牛などなど。

それにしても肝心のご先祖様は「え、これに乗れってこと？」とさぞやびっくりするでしょうか。実のところはわかりませんが、私はスーパーカータイプだったら乗ってもいいかな…笑、なんて勝手に想像しております。

食べ物で遊んではいけないと叱られたものですが、昔ながらの風習もこうやって進化しながらでも伝わっていくのだったらそれはそれでいいのかなと思いました。

It’s hot again today…

I took a short summer vacation, but the intense heat continues and it feels like the season hasn’t changed at all, so I haven’t felt like doing anything and today has come around. I’m starting to miss the signs of autumn.

Some of you may be traveling back from your summer vacations today, but how was everyone’s summer vacation?

As a local resident whose parents both live in Aichi Prefecture, I don’t have a rural hometown to return to, and my parents’ house is close enough to reach by car, so I don’t really feel the Obon holiday spirit. When I was a child, I used to envy my classmates who returned to their “rural hometowns” during summer vacation, but the streets were empty, my friends had gone home, and the usual trains were empty, so Obon felt strange.

Speaking of which, Obon has already ended, but do you have the custom of welcoming your ancestors with “spirit horses” and “spirit cows” in your area? As you may know, spirit horses are the vehicles that ancestors use to return home. During Obon, spirit horses and spirit cows made from eggplants and cucumbers are displayed on the Obon altar, along with ancestral tablets, Obon flowers, and offerings.

Cucumbers are said to represent fast horses, symbolizing the wish for ancestors to return quickly. Eggplants are said to represent cows, symbolizing the wish for ancestors to return slowly and bring back many offerings.

Such spirit horses and spirit cows, but the recent arrangements of spirit horses and spirit cows are amazing. Let’s call them spirit horse and spirit cow artisans, but there are works that are so passionate they could be called art, or even modified works, and there are plenty of collections uploaded on Instagram and X, which make you marvel, or rather laugh.

Some are turned into supercars, others have motors attached to their legs, and some are designed to resemble various characters. In a post by a certain automobile manufacturer, there was a spirit horse and spirit cow that were ordinary cars on the way there and Super Cub motorcycles on the way back.

Still, I wonder if the ancestors themselves would be surprised to see this and think, “Wait, are we supposed to ride this?” I don’t really know, but I imagine that if it were a supercar type, I might be willing to ride it… laugh.

We were scolded for playing with food, but if traditional customs can evolve like this while still being passed down, maybe that’s not so bad.

If you’re interested, please search for it. There are plenty of unique spirit horses and spirit cows that would surprise your ancestors. Still, it’s amazing how the ideas never run out…

こんなふうに石や鉱物がなぜかしら気になります。先日も新鉱物発見のニュースを目にしました。

岡山県で採取された翡翠の中から黒緑色の新鉱物を発見し、日本神話の天照大神にちなんで「アマテラス石」と命名したと発表。既知の鉱物とは化学組成や結晶構造が明確に違っており、国際鉱物学連合に新鉱物として正式に承認されたとのことです。

 

この新しい鉱物はヒスイの中から発見されたということですが、これまでもヒスイから新鉱物が発見されたことはあったのようでして、これまではあの翡翠ハンターなどで有名な新潟県糸魚川地域のヒスイに特有の鉱物と考えられてきました。ですが今回発見された「アマテラス石」は岡山県で発見されたということで、岡山県大佐山地域のヒスイからも同様の鉱物が産出することを確認できたようです。また大佐山地域のヒスイには未知の鉱物が複数含まれていることも明らかになり、そのうちの一つがアマテラス石だということです。

 

研究チームの方によりますと、「鉱物は、地質作用の産物だ。すなわち新鉱物の発見は、未知の地質環境や作用の存在を示すものでもある。従来、ヒスイは沈み込み帯（2つのプレートが衝突して、片方が片方の下に滑り込む場所。日本列島の深部が該当）で形成されると知られてきたが、その中からアマテラス石のような新鉱物が見つかったことは、ヒスイの成因や進化を考察するうえで新たな視点を提供する」との見解ですので、ただの素人にとっては新たな鉱物が見つかるんじゃないかという予感しかないのですね。

 

そんな鉱物ですが、世界では約5,478種類の鉱物が知られており、実は毎年新しい鉱物が発見されていたりします。

日本でもこれまでに132種の鉱物が世界で初めて発見されているのですが、昨年も熊本県美里町の山中から新鉱物「不知火鉱（しらぬいこう、学名：Shiranuiite）」を発見されおり、（日本で唯一のプラチナ系砂白金の鉱床で、不知火鉱は同地の砂白金から見出されました。）不知火鉱は熊本県の古称「火の国」の伝承にちなんで命名されております。いつも思うのですが落ち着いてそれでいて分かりやすくて覚えやすくてネーミングセンスが絶妙だなといつも思います。

今回の万博においても（こちらは地球の鉱物ではないですが）「世界最大級の火星の石」が展示されているのですが、かつての「月の石」においても多くの人が石を観に長蛇の列をなして並んだことを思い返しても、石が人を魅了するのか、人が石を観てみたくなるのか…。

また、ジュエリーになったり、珍しい形状の鉱物でない限りみるからになんてことない石だとしても、その石の分析や科学的根拠などなど「生い立ち」を知れば知るほどこれまた不思議、「ただの石」ではなくなってきます。人を惹きつける石の存在とは…

そんな惹きつける惹きつけられる理由は人それぞれ？石それぞれ？だとは思いますが、自分の場合、自分たちをよりも地球のことよく知ってるんじゃないかという気にさせるところなのか、とはいいつつも物は言わない。

鉱物は形成されるまでに数千万年〜数億年という膨大な時間をかかり、また、その形成途中においても地球46億年の歴史の中で地中の圧力やマグマの熱により破壊と再生を繰り返しているわけでして、そんな鉱物たちがわずか100年足らずの私たちの短い人生と交差する瞬間は一瞬だと思うと実に奇跡的な確率。

長い年月をくぐり抜けてきた物言わぬ地球の大先輩と、一瞬だけ時を同じくした自分が交信してみたいと思うのですが、こうなったらどうしても万博の火星の石が観たくなってきます…。

Actually, I haven’t been able to visit the Osaka-Kansai Expo yet, but I’m starting to panic because I need to make plans soon. One thing I’d like to see if I get the chance is the “Mars Stone” meteorite. It is believed to have flown from Mars to Earth tens of thousands of years ago, and it is one of the largest meteorites of Martian origin in the world. Since there are very few people who have had the opportunity to encounter extraterrestrial matter, I would like to take this chance to see it for myself.

For some reason, I’ve always been fascinated by stones and minerals, and recently I came across news about the discovery of a new mineral.

A new black-green mineral was discovered within jade extracted in Okayama Prefecture, and it was named “Amaterasu Stone” after the Japanese mythological deity Amaterasu. It reportedly differs significantly from known minerals in terms of chemical composition and crystal structure, and has been officially recognized as a new mineral by the International Mineralogical Association.

This new mineral was discovered in jade, but it seems that new minerals have been discovered in jade before, and until now, they were thought to be unique to the jade from the Itoigawa region of Niigata Prefecture, which is famous for its jade hunters. However, the “Amaterasu Stone” discovered this time was found in Okayama Prefecture, and it has been confirmed that similar minerals are also produced in the jade from the Oosayama region of Okayama Prefecture. Additionally, it has been revealed that the jade from the Oosayama region contains multiple unknown minerals, one of which is Amaterasu Stone.

According to the research team, “Minerals are products of geological processes. Therefore, the discovery of new minerals also indicates the existence of unknown geological environments or processes. Previously, it was known that jade forms in subduction zones (where two plates collide and one plate slides beneath the other; The Japanese archipelago’s deep interior falls under this category. However, the discovery of new minerals like Amaterasu Stone from such zones provides a new perspective for understanding the origin and evolution of jade.” For the average person, this is just a hunch that new minerals might be discovered.

Such minerals are known worldwide, with approximately 5,478 types identified, and new minerals are actually discovered every year.

In Japan, 132 mineral species have been discovered for the first time in the world, and last year, a new mineral called “Shiranuiite” was discovered in the mountains of Misato Town, Kumamoto Prefecture. (This is the only platinum-group sand platinum deposit in Japan, and Shiranuiite was discovered from the sand platinum in the same area.) Shiranuiite was named after the traditional name of Kumamoto Prefecture, “The Land of Fire.” I always think that the naming is calm yet easy to understand and remember, with an exquisite sense of naming.

At this World Expo, although it is not an Earth mineral, the “world’s largest Martian rock” is on display. Recalling how many people formed long lines to see the “moon rock” in the past, one wonders whether stones captivate people or whether people are simply drawn to see stones…

Even if a stone is just an ordinary rock that doesn’t look particularly interesting unless it’s turned into jewelry or has a rare shape, the more you learn about its analysis, scientific basis, and “origin,” the more mysterious it becomes—it’s no longer just a “stone.” What is the essence of a stone?

The reasons for being drawn to or repelled by stones vary from person to person, and perhaps from stone to stone. In my case, it makes me feel like stones know more about the Earth than we do.

Even if a stone is nothing special—unless it’s turned into jewelry or has an unusual shape—the more you learn about its analysis, scientific basis, and “origin,” the more mysterious it becomes, and it ceases to be “just a stone.” What is the essence of a stone?

The reasons for being drawn to or repelled by stones vary from person to person, and perhaps from stone to stone. In my case, it makes me feel that stones know more about Earth than we do.

Mineral formation takes tens of millions to hundreds of millions of years, and even during their formation, they undergo repeated cycles of destruction and regeneration due to underground pressure and magma heat over Earth’s 4.6 billion-year history. The moment when such minerals intersect with our brief human lives of less than 100 years is but an instant.

It’s truly a miraculous probability, so I’m eager to see the Mars rocks at the Expo, hoping to communicate with these silent, ancient Earth elders for just a moment.

九州地方の雨が心配ですね。

このところ「線状降水帯」という言葉をニュースで耳にする機会が増えて、大雨が降ると次はここかも…と不安になります。

ここ最近「線状降水帯」を耳にする機会が増えたなと感じるわけですが、単に認知度が上がっただけではなく、実際に線状降水帯の発生頻度も増加傾向にあるといわれています。増加傾向にある主な原因として、地球温暖化の影響は言うまでもありませんが、 気象レーダーの性能が飛躍的に向上したことで、高い精度で降水の状況を観測できるようになったこともそのひとつですね。

気象研究所の調査によると、日本における線状降水帯の発生には明確な地域的特徴があることがわかっています。2009年から2022年までの期間で458の線状降水帯事例を分析した結果、九州、 南西諸島、 四国、 紀伊半島では線状降水帯による大雨のリスクが高いとされています。しかし、日本全国どこでも発生する可能性があるわけで、日頃から災害のリスクがあることを想定して、事前に適切な備えをすることが大切です。

というわけで、雨ですることもないので、私も備えや行動の再確認を行いました。備えは多い方が良いのでしょうが、どのくらい備えればよいのか見当がつかずストックが増えている我が家ではありますが…。

今日は朝からそんな雨の一日なのですが、雨の日に家にいるのは実は嫌いじゃない派だったりもしますが、わかってくれる方いますでしょうか…。

お天気の日は、基本このお天気にせっかくだからと、どこか出かけたり、何かしなくてはいけない気がして、実は落ち着きません。

ところが雨の日は、朝、雨音が耳に徐々に入って徐々に目覚めるのですが、まずはこれがけっこう好きです。そして徐々に頭の中で決めていたタスクの変更なんかして「あれは今日しなくていいな…」なんてサボりモードへ。

「ま、雨だし」と、いろいろサボっちゃったり予定を変更したりしても、全部雨のせいにして心置きなく手抜きする私なのですが、だって雨ですもんね笑。

とはいえ、今日はひどい雨のところも多く、落ちついて雨を眺める状況ではないようですが、これ以上豪雨による災害が起こらないことを願うばかりです。

さてさて、お天気は良くありませんが、今週末からお盆休みを兼ねて夏季休暇という方もおいでではないでしょうか。

I’m worried about the rain in the Kyushu region.

Lately, I’ve been hearing the term “linear precipitation zone” more often in the news, and when heavy rain falls, I feel anxious that it might happen here next.

While it may seem like linear precipitation zones have increased recently, this is not merely due to increased awareness; it is also said that the actual frequency of their occurrence is on the rise. One of the main causes of this increase is, of course, the impact of global warming, but another factor is the significant improvement in weather radar performance, which now allows for highly accurate observation of precipitation conditions.

According to a survey by the Meteorological Research Institute, there are clear regional characteristics associated with the occurrence of linear precipitation zones in Japan. An analysis of 458 cases of linear precipitation zones from 2009 to 2022 revealed that the risk of heavy rain caused by linear precipitation zones is particularly high in Kyushu, the Southwest Islands, Shikoku, and the Kii Peninsula. However, they can occur anywhere in Japan, so it is important to anticipate the risk of disasters and take appropriate precautions in advance.

That said, since there’s nothing to do in the rain, I also took the opportunity to review my preparations and actions. While it’s probably better to have more preparations, I’m not sure how much is enough, and our home is already stockpiling supplies.

Today has been a rainy day since morning, but I actually don’t mind staying home on rainy days. Does anyone else feel the same way?

On sunny days, I feel like I should go out somewhere or do something because it’s such a nice day, which actually makes me feel restless.

But on rainy days, I wake up gradually to the sound of rain in the morning, and I actually quite like that. Then I start changing the tasks I had planned in my head and think, “I don’t have to do that today…” and slip into a lazy mode.

“Well, it’s raining,” I tell myself, and I end up slacking off or changing my plans, blaming it all on the rain and feeling no guilt about it. After all, it’s raining, right? Haha.

That said, today’s rain is pretty heavy in some areas, so it’s not exactly a situation where you can sit back and enjoy the rain. I can only hope that no further disasters caused by heavy rain occur.

Well, the weather isn’t great, but some of you may be taking summer vacation starting this weekend, which coincides with the Obon holiday.

With the summer vacation, some people are returning to their parents’ homes, and with the recent trend toward end-of-life planning, we’ve seen an increase in consultations and requests for purchases related to cleaning up homes. It’s too hot to do any heavy lifting, but it might be a good opportunity to discuss these matters.

Recently, some people are taking the initiative to organize their own belongings through pre-death organization, but many parents at their parents’ homes are getting older and find it difficult to take action, so it is often the surrounding family members who take the lead. Once they start, they may realize how difficult it is, or there may be disagreements with their parents.

Since this is a rare opportunity, it might be a good idea to have a casual conversation with your family while looking each other in the face.

今年の夏の甲子園では、暑さ対策の一環として８月１０日までは午前の部と夕方の部の２部制が実施されています。

一日全試合観戦する場合でも午前の部と午後の部の２枚のチケットが必要になり、午前の部のあと観客は全員球場を出なくてはいけません。これまで全日観戦してきた甲子園ファンには少し不便になりますが、会社帰りなどに立ち寄って観戦できると喜ぶ方々もいるようです。

私は時間が許せば、家事などをしながら４試合連続で見続けることも苦になりません。というか気が付くと４試合観戦し続けているといった感じなのですが…。軽いヤジなどを飛ばしながら観続ける姿を見て家族が呆れております。

今年は連日ナイターで試合を観るという例年とは違う観戦に少し戸惑いも覚えます。ひと昔前は前の試合が長引き４試合目がナイターに突入すると、「甲子園でナイター試合が経験できてラッキーだね」といった特別感がありました。それが毎日となると不思議な感覚です。

プロ野球の試合のようでもあり、ナイターの方がお得なのではと思いがちですが、実際は昼間とボールの見え方が違うという声もあるようです。照明のあかりの下では、ピッチャーの球が通常より速く見えると言う人もいるのだとか。慣れない環境でプレイするのは選手にとって少なからずストレスがあるかもしれません。

甲子園のナイター照明は１９５６年に設置され、当時主流だった白熱光線に加え複数の種類の照明を組み合わせたものでした。より明るく温かみのある照明で「カクテル光線」と呼ばれ注目されたとのこと。その後照明のLED化が求められると、「カクテル光線」の温かみは何とか残せないかという声が上がり、試行錯誤の末、白色のLEDと深い橙色のLEDを使用した、甲子園球場のためのカクテル光線LEDが開発されました。

甲子園照明の温かさを残しつつ、試合を盛り上げる様々な演出も可能になったとのことです。そして一番重要なのはプレ―がしやすいということ。フライボールを捕る時の照明の眩しさを軽減する工夫もされているそうです。

それにしても年々夏の暑さが厳しくなっていく中、人間も夏は夜行性になる必要がでてきているのでしょうか。不安になってきます。

「ナイター」について調べていますと、英語ではナイターは使わずナイトゲームと呼ぶそうですね。和製英語だと言う人もいるようですが、昔はアメリカでも「ナイター」が使われていたという話もあります。野球用語のカタカナは日本人に分かりやすいように造られたものが多く、しばしば話題に上ります。「ランニングホームラン」や「フォアボール」など絶妙なネーミングだと思います。カナカナではないですが、個人的には「振り逃げ」が好きです。

他にも「バックスクリーン」は英語で「センターフィールド・スクリーン」や「batter’s eye screen （バッターズアイ・スクリーン」などと表現されます。バッターの目のスクリーンとは？と不思議に思い調べてみますと、バッター、キャッチャー、球審がピッチャーの投げる球が見やすいようにと設置されているスクリーンなのだとか。バックスクリーンに観客や派手な広告などがあるとボールが見えにくくなりケガの危険性も高まるので。緑や黒で塗られていることが多いようです。

そこで気になったのがバッターボックスの後ろの広告です。観客が座っているのはまだいいとして、メジャーリーグの放送を観ているとかなり派手な日本企業の広告が目に付きます。ピッチャーの気が散らないのかと心配していると、家族に「知らないの？」と冷たくあしらわれました。ご存知の方も多いのでしょうが、多くの場合あの派手な広告はCGではめ込まれ日本向けに流されているもので、現地では違う広告が流されているのだとか。球場では「グリーンバック」と呼ばれる緑一色のスクリーンなので、投手の邪魔にはならないとのこと。実際に広告が描かれている球場もあるようですが、ＣＧ広告が増えているそうです。

技術の進歩に追い付けていない私は、段々自分の目に見えているものが信じられなくなってきました…。

As part of measures to combat the heat, the Koshien Tournament this summer is being held in two sessions, morning and evening, until August 10.

Even if you want to watch all the games in a day, you will need two tickets, one for the morning session and one for the afternoon session, and after the morning session, all spectators must leave the stadium. This may be a little inconvenient for Koshien fans who have been watching all day, but there are also those who are happy to be able to stop by and watch the games on their way home from work.

If time permits, I don’t mind watching four consecutive games while doing household chores. In fact, I often find myself watching four games in a row without even realizing it. My family is amazed to see me watching the games while occasionally making light-hearted comments.

This year, watching night games every day feels a bit different from usual, and I’m a bit confused. Back in the day, if the previous game ran long and the fourth game went into night mode, there was a sense of specialness, like, “It’s lucky to experience a night game at Koshien.” But doing it every day feels strange.

It’s like a professional baseball game, and you might think night games are more advantageous, but apparently, some people say the ball looks different during the day. Some people say that under the stadium lights, the pitcher’s ball appears to move faster than usual. Playing in an unfamiliar environment may cause some stress for the players.

Koshien Stadium’s night game lighting was installed in 1956, combining multiple types of lighting in addition to the incandescent lights that were mainstream at the time. The brighter, warmer lighting was dubbed “cocktail lighting” and garnered attention. When LED lighting became necessary, there were calls to somehow preserve the warmth of the “cocktail lighting.” After trial and error, a Koshien Stadium-specific cocktail lighting LED system was developed using white LEDs and deep orange LEDs.

This lighting retains the warmth of Koshien Stadium while also enabling various effects to enhance the excitement of the game. Perhaps most importantly, it makes it easier for players to perform. Apparently, measures have been taken to reduce glare from the lighting when catching fly balls.

Still, as the summer heat grows more intense each year, one can’t help but wonder if humans are beginning to need to adopt a nocturnal lifestyle during the summer. It’s a bit concerning.

When researching “night games,” I found that in English, they are called “night games” rather than “night games.” Some people say it’s a Japanese-made English term, but there are also stories that “night games” were used in America in the past. Many baseball terms in katakana were created to be easy for Japanese people to understand and often become topics of discussion. I think terms like “running home run” and “four-ball” have clever names. It’s not in katakana, but personally, I like “swinging and missing.”

Additionally, “backscreen” is expressed in English as “center field screen” or “batter’s eye screen.” I wondered what a batter’s eye screen was, so I looked it up and found out that it is a screen installed to make it easier for the batter, catcher, and umpire to see the pitcher’s throws. Apparently, if there are spectators or flashy advertisements on the back screen, it makes it harder to see the ball and increases the risk of injury. That’s why they’re often painted green or black.

What caught my attention was the advertisement behind the batter’s box. While it’s fine for the audience to be seated there, when watching Major League Baseball broadcasts, the advertisements are quite flashy. I was worried that they might distract the pitcher, but my family coldly replied, “Don’t you know?” Many people are probably aware of this, but in most cases, those flashy advertisements are CGI-inserted and aired for the Japanese market, while different advertisements are shown locally. At the stadium, the screen is a solid green color called a “green screen,” so it doesn’t distract the pitcher. While there are some stadiums where ads are actually displayed, it seems that CG ads are becoming more common.

As someone who can’t keep up with technological advancements, I’m starting to doubt what I see with my own eyes…
