ここは名古屋市東区にある建中寺の山門付近なのですが、銀杏の紅葉はそろそろピークを迎えていました。

このところ、京都の紅葉の混雑などの中継をTVなどでよくみますが、見ている側は人混みの様子に少々圧倒されておりますが、先日自分もそんな京都に突っ込んできたひとりです。訪れるとやっぱり行って良かったと思いますし、楽しかったので、ここは圧倒されつつも行ってみるものだな…と思いました。

それにしても、今日のお天気は最高。

ここは京都のような紅葉の名所でもない街中の紅葉の風景なのですが、山門内の広場ではご近所の保育園の子どもたちやワンちゃんを連れたご近所さん、そして自分のような通りすがりの人などなど。

子ともたちのはしゃぐ声が聞こえたり、ワンちゃんが落ち葉の中を飛び跳ねていたり、お散歩をするご近所さんがベンチに座っておしゃべりしていたり。

それぞれのみなさんが山門と自分の木々の落ち葉を踏みしめながらゆったりと楽しむこの時期の紅葉の風景と時間が、彩られた風景画の中の人物がゆっくりと動きがしたような感覚を覚えました。

この秋は、お天気も安定いているようですので紅葉の名所の人混みに突っ込むのもよし、いつもの風景の紅葉を楽しむ日常もよし、この時期の紅葉との風景と、それぞれの楽しみ方がどれも彩りよい時間を過ごしたいものですね。

Today’s contrast between the golden ginkgo leaves and the blue sky. Beautiful, isn’t it?

This is near the mountain gate of Kenchū-ji Temple in Higashi Ward, Nagoya City, and the ginkgo leaves were just about reaching their peak.

Lately, I often see live coverage on TV of the crowds at Kyoto’s autumn foliage spots. Watching the scenes of the throngs, I feel a bit overwhelmed, but the other day, I was one of those people who plunged right into Kyoto. Visiting, I still think it was worth going and I enjoyed it, so I figured… even if you feel overwhelmed, it’s still worth going.

That said, today’s weather is absolutely perfect.

This isn’t a famous autumn foliage spot like Kyoto, just the scenery in the city. But in the plaza inside the mountain gate, there were children from the neighborhood nursery school, locals walking their dogs, and passersby like myself.

I could hear the children’s excited voices, dogs leaping through the fallen leaves, and neighbors sitting on benches chatting during their walks. Everyone was leisurely enjoying this season’s foliage scenery, crunching through the fallen leaves around the temple gate and their own trees. It felt like the figures in a landscape painting had slowly come to life.

This autumn seems to have stable weather, so whether you choose to dive into the crowds at famous autumn foliage spots or simply enjoy the everyday scenery of leaves changing, each way of experiencing the season’s colors promises a richly colored time.

秋も深まってきたな…なんてようやく思っていたところですのに、早くも来週から12月ということに驚きです。私のように驚いてる方もおいでではないでしょうか。それと同時に、年末に向けて何かやっておくことはないかなどと考えるだけでいろいろ気忙しくもなってきました。

ところでそんなお正月の準備のひとつ。いえいえ、もはやそのひとつで“あった”年賀状ですが、昨今は様子が違ってきていますよね。みなさまはどうされていますでしょうか。

SNSなどの普及もあり、「年賀状を卒業したい」と考える人が増えているようですが、その「年賀状じまい」のタイミングが大変難しく思います。その後のお付き合いになにか不都合なことはないか、疎遠にならないのか…、年に一度なのだから出すべきなのか…などと、もやもやしてしまいます。

そんなことを考えている方も多いようで、今年いただいた年賀状にも、「年賀状じまいします。」や「来年からはLINEでのご挨拶に致しますね」「これからも変わらぬお付き合いを」などなど言葉を添えている方も多くいらっしゃいました。

ですので、ここ数年は私もLINEでのご挨拶に移行し、これからも変わらぬお付き合いをなどとお伝えおり、翌年は喪中などであいさつができていなかった方やいただいた方のみに遅ればせながらの年賀状を出すようにし、徐々にして移行しておりました。

そんなことを繰り返したここ数年での個人的感想ですが、結論。年賀状を卒業してもメールや電話でのお付き合いを続けているため、人間関係は何も変わっていないなと思いました。よって「年賀状じまい」のあいさつの有無は、それほど重要ではないようにも感じました。

それよりも、これまでの年賀状のからの呪縛といいますかプレッシャーから開放された感が、正直なところでした。

ただ、毎年ものすごい達筆の年賀状をくださる方がおりまして、勝手ながらそれは楽しみにしているので、どうしたものか…などと今年の年末も少しもやもやは残りそうです。

Autumn has truly deepened… I was just beginning to think that, yet I’m surprised to find December already starting next week. I wonder if others feel as surprised as I do. At the same time, just thinking about what needs to be done before year’s end has made me feel rather flustered.

Speaking of New Year’s preparations—well, actually, it used to be one of them: New Year’s cards. But things have changed lately, haven’t they? How do you all handle it?

With the spread of SNS and such, it seems more people are thinking, “I want to graduate from New Year’s cards.” But I find the timing for that “ending New Year’s cards” thing really tricky. I get all fuzzy-headed thinking about whether it might cause any awkwardness in future interactions, if we’ll drift apart… or if I should send one since it’s only once a year…

It seems many others are thinking the same thing. Among the New Year’s cards I received this year, many included messages like: “Starting next year, I’ll send greetings via LINE,” or “Looking forward to our continued friendship.”

So, for the past few years, I’ve also transitioned to sending greetings via LINE, expressing wishes for our continued friendship. The following year, I’d send belated New Year’s cards only to those I hadn’t been able to greet due to mourning or to those who had sent me cards, gradually making the shift.

After repeating this process for several years, my personal conclusion is this: Even after “graduating” from New Year’s cards, I’ve kept in touch via email or phone, so my relationships haven’t changed at all. Therefore, whether or not you send a “farewell to New Year’s cards” message doesn’t seem that important.

Honestly, what I felt more strongly was a sense of liberation from the pressure, or perhaps the shackles, of the New Year’s card tradition.

However, there’s someone who sends me incredibly beautifully written cards every year, and I must admit I look forward to them. So, I wonder what to do… I suspect I’ll still feel a bit uneasy about it this year-end too.

朝ドラ「ばけばけ」にて小泉八雲がモデルのヘブン先生の素性が色々と明らかになってきました。朝ドラに興味のない方でも小泉八雲とその作品には馴染みがあり、なぜ外国の記者が日本人を魅了する「雪女」や「耳なし芳一」などの怪談話を書けたのか不思議に思う人も多いかと思います。

実際私も小泉八雲が日本人ではないと知った時には俄かには信じられませんでした。日本的な情緒に溢れた物語は妻である小泉セツの影響も大きいのでしょうが、八雲自身の人となりにも関係が深いように思います。

ちなみにヘブン先生を演じるトミー・バストウさんはイギリス人で、昨年アメリカでエミー賞を受賞した、真田広之さん主演の「ＳＨＯＧＵＮ 将軍」に司祭役で出演されていたのだとか。父親の影響で古い日本映画が好きになり、日本語も独学で勉強したそうです。先日テレビに普段着で出演されていましたが、すぐには気付かないほど雰囲気が違っていました。バンドのリードボーカルも務めるという多才な人物で、役になり切るために八雲の研究を熱心にしたとのことです。

先日ドラマの中で、ヘブン先生に関するクイズ大会が開催され、彼が４０歳だということが判明し驚きました。小泉八雲は５４歳で亡くなっているため（ネタバレになっていたらすみません）、わずか十数年で家族をつくり、日本に関する多くの書物を残したことになりますね。

母親がギリシャ人でギリシャのレフカダ島（別名ラフカディア島）で生まれました。２歳までギリシャに住み、その後父親の故郷のアイルランドに移住します。７歳で両親が離婚し、ひとり大叔母に預けられ、１６歳の時にロープの結び目が当たり左目を失明。壮絶な少年期を過ごし、孤独で愛情に飢えた繊細で内気な性格になっていったといわれています。

その後１９歳でアメリカに渡り記者となりますが、お金に困ることも多く、ドラマのクイズにもありましたが実際に１カ月だけレストランを開いたこともあるそうです。

今朝のばけばけで「僕も料理をします」というセリフがさらっと流れました。ドラマでは魚の小骨を女中にとってもらい、糸こんにゃくが虫に見え大騒ぎする様子から、てっきり食べる専門の食にうるさい人かと思っていましたが、実は料理にこだわりがあり、ニューオーリンズ時代にはクレオール料理を研究していたのだとか。

クレオール料理とは欧米やネイティブアメリカ、アジアやアフリカなどの食文化がミックスされた料理なのだそうです。いつもどこかアウトサイダーであるがゆえに、固定観点に囚われないラフカディオ・ハーンがこの料理に魅了されたのは自然なことだったのかもしれませんね。残念なことに（幸運なことに？）レストラン経営の才能はなかったようですが。

今朝のドラマではヘブン先生にプレゼントされたウグイスが雄か雌かの論争から、いやウグイスではなくメジロではないかという話でコントのように盛り上がっていましたが、小泉八雲は実際にはウグイスを贈られていたようです。

梅の木にとまるメジロはよくウグイスと間違えられ、メジロがウグイスの偽物のようにいわれることもありますが、メジロにとっては迷惑な話です。ドラマのラストで泥酔したヘブン先生が「ウグイスがメジロなら、私もメジロなんだろうか」と呟きますが、どこか意味深でした。

In the morning drama “Bakebake,” the true identity of Mr. Heaven, modeled after Lafcadio Hearn, has gradually been revealed. Even those uninterested in morning dramas are likely familiar with Lafcadio Hearn and his works, and many probably wonder how a foreign reporter could write ghost stories like “The Snow Woman” and “The Earless Hōichi” that so captivated the Japanese.

Honestly, when I first learned Lafcadio Hearn wasn’t Japanese, I couldn’t believe it at first. While his wife, Setsu Koizumi, undoubtedly influenced his stories rich in Japanese sentiment, I believe Yakumo’s own character played a significant role too.

Incidentally, Tommy Bastow, who plays Mr. Heaven, is British. He reportedly appeared as a priest in last year’s Emmy-winning American miniseries “SHOGUN,” starring Hiroyuki Sanada. He developed a love for old Japanese films through his father and taught himself Japanese. I saw him on TV recently in casual clothes, and his aura was so different I didn’t recognize him at first. He’s a multi-talented person who also serves as a band’s lead vocalist, and I hear he diligently researched Yakumo to fully embody the role.

In a recent drama, a quiz show about Mr. Heaven revealed he’s 40 years old, which surprised me. Since Lafcadio Hearn passed away at 54 (sorry if that’s a spoiler), he managed to build a family and leave behind numerous writings about Japan in just over a decade.

His mother was Greek, and he was born on the Greek island of Lefkada (also known as Lefkada Island). He lived in Greece until age 2, then moved to his father’s homeland, Ireland. His parents divorced when he was 7, leaving him in the care of a great-aunt. At 16, he lost sight in his left eye when a rope knot struck him. He endured a harrowing childhood, which is said to have shaped him into a lonely, love-starved, sensitive, and shy person.

This is purely my personal impression, but it seems to me that many writers who leave a lasting mark on the world often craved family love, especially their mother’s love, during childhood but were denied it… Sorry, this is really just my own arbitrary assumption.

Later, at age 19, he moved to America and became a journalist. He often struggled financially, and as mentioned in the drama quiz, he actually opened a restaurant for just one month.

This morning on Bakebake, the line “I cook too” slipped out casually. In the drama, he had the maid remove fish bones and made a huge fuss because shirataki noodles looked like worms, so I’d assumed he was just a picky eater who only cared about eating. But apparently, he was actually quite particular about cooking and studied Creole cuisine during his time in New Orleans.

Creole cuisine is a blend of culinary cultures from Europe, the Americas, Native Americans, Asia, and Africa. It seems natural that Lafcadio Hearn, always something of an outsider and thus unfettered by fixed perspectives, would be captivated by this cuisine. Unfortunately, it seems he lacked talent for restaurant management.

In this morning’s drama, the debate over whether the bush warbler gifted to Dr. Heaven was male or female—or rather, whether it was even a bush warbler or perhaps a Japanese white-eye—escalated into a comedic skit. However, Koizumi Yakumo was apparently actually given a bush warbler.

The Japanese white-eyes perched on plum trees are often mistaken for bush warblers, and sometimes even called fake bush warblers—which must be quite annoying for the white-eyes themselves. In the drama’s finale, the drunken Mr. Heaven mutters, “If bush warblers are white-eyes, then am I a white-eye too?” It felt rather meaningful somehow.

つい先月、たしか半袖を着ていた自分だったのですが今日は年賀状の注文を済ませました。今月はいろいろとメンタルとフィジカル面の両方でついていけない状態でして、このようにいろいろ驚いておりますが、過ごしやすい貴重な時期ですので11月は有効に過ごしたいものです…。

さてさて貴重なお天気を有効に使おうと先日、マルシェなるものにいってまいりました。大府市にあいち健康の森公園の大芝生広場開催されておりました「器と暮らし市へ」へ。

と言いましてもこの三連休を完全になめていました…。10：00時に現地近くにたどり着いたのですが、いきなりの大渋滞にハマりまして、一旦入場を離脱…。近くのカフェでご飯を食べてから再入場を試みました。車移動は便利なのですが、ここは車でしか行くことが難しい公園ですので致し方ないのですが、これだけは気持ちが萎えます。

再トライの末、遅ればせながらなんとか14：30頃に会場に到着。

この「器と暮らし市」、東海地区の常滑焼、瀬戸焼、美濃焼、などの有名な焼き物の他、三重県の萬古焼や滋賀県の信楽焼なども加わり、温もりを感じる器やつくり手の個性が光る作家ものまで、食卓を彩るステキな器が数多くブースを連ねておりました。さらにはそれらと共に使われる道具やおいしい焼菓子、フードトラックも登場、ワークショップなども開催されており、公園内ということで大変賑わっておりました。

ですが、ゆっくり見ていこうと思っていたのですが大渋滞のための出遅れで時間が足りず。あわてて一つ気に入った器を手に取り購入。すべて出発時間の出遅れで残念な一日になってしまい、反省反省…。写真からもお分かりのとおりすっかり夕方。この夕焼けの景色をみて反省を踏まえ来年の再リベンジを誓いました笑。

愛知県はこういった器市ややきもの市が春や秋の季節の良い時期に各所で開催されいますので、またの機会にご紹介できればと思っております。がいかし、どこも大渋滞混雑が見込まれますので私のような失敗をしないよう、くれぐれも出発時間には余裕をもって早めが必須であります。

Just last month, I distinctly remember wearing short sleeves, yet today I’ve already ordered my New Year’s cards. This month, I’ve been struggling to keep up mentally and physically, and while I’m surprised by how things are unfolding, November is a precious, comfortable time of year, so I want to make the most of it…

Well then, to make the most of this precious weather, I went to a market the other day. It was the “Pottery and Lifestyle Market” held at the large lawn plaza in Aichi Health Forest Park in Obu City.

That said, I completely underestimated this three-day weekend… I arrived near the venue around 10:00 AM, but got stuck in a massive traffic jam right away and had to leave the entrance area… I tried eating at a nearby cafe before attempting to re-enter. While driving is convenient, this park is difficult to reach by anything but car, so it can’t be helped, but this alone really dampens my spirits.

After another attempt, I finally arrived at the venue around 2:30 pm, albeit late.

This “Pottery and Living Market” featured not only famous pottery from the Tokai region like Tokoname ware, Seto ware, and Mino ware, but also included Mie Prefecture’s Banko ware and Shiga Prefecture’s Shigaraki ware. Numerous booths lined up, showcasing wonderful tableware to brighten your dining experience – from pieces radiating warmth to unique artisan works highlighting the maker’s individuality. Alongside the tableware, tools for use with them, delicious baked goods, and food trucks were also present. Workshops were held, and being in the park, the atmosphere was incredibly lively.

I had planned to take my time browsing, but due to heavy traffic delays, I arrived late and ran out of time. In a rush, I grabbed one piece I liked and bought it. The entire day was a disappointment because of the late departure time—I really need to reflect on this… As you can see from the photos, it was already evening. Seeing this sunset view, I reflected on my mistakes and vowed to come back next year for a rematch!

Aichi Prefecture hosts these pottery and ceramics markets in various locations during the pleasant spring and autumn seasons, so I hope to introduce them again in the future. However, heavy traffic and crowds are expected everywhere, so to avoid my kind of mistake, I strongly recommend leaving plenty of time and heading out early.

大相撲九州場所、いよいよ本日千秋楽を迎えます。優勝争いが大混戦となっており大変盛り上がっていますね。昨日の取り組みでは両横綱に黒星が付くという波乱の一日となりました。大の里が琴桜に敗れ、豊昇龍が安青錦に敗けたことで、豊昇龍、大の里、安青錦、の三力士が１１勝３敗で並んでいます。

昨日の安青錦が巨体の豊昇龍を押し出した取り組みは、私の知っている相撲とはまた一味違う気迫と凄みを感じ興奮しました。

先月の話になりますが、１０月１５日から１０月１９日までイギリスのロイヤル・アルバート・ホールにて大相撲のロンドン公演が行われ大変盛況だったようです。ロンドンでの公演は１９９１年以来３４年ぶりのことだったのだとか。初日チケットはすぐに完売したそうで、イギリスでの相撲人気に驚きました。

力士による取組だけでなく、土俵づくり、横綱土俵入り、綱打ちなどの神聖な儀式を通して日本の伝統文化や精神性をイギリスの方々も感じることができたようです。観客の「よいしょ」という掛け声のタイミングもばっちりでしたね。

力士たちも「清めの塩」をいつもより派手にまいていた気がしたのですが…観客へのサービスもあったのでしょうか。大きな歓声が上がっていました。

イギリス公演では特に「宇良」が人気だったようで、脇の下をくぐり後ろに反って倒す「伝え反り」の技が決まった時には会場が大いに沸き、「マジシャン」というニックネームもついたとか。また「琴栄峰」の足を高く上げる見事な四股も大喝采をあびていました。きっとイギリス人の大相撲ファンが一気に増えたことでしょう。

時々力士の名前が間違えて呼ばれていたのもご愛嬌で、解説者が「グッド フットワーク！きむら しょうのすけ！」と土俵で軽やかに飛び回る「行司」に声援を送っていたのも日本ではあり得ないことで面白かったです。

これらの取組はずっと動画サイトで観ていたのですが、最近は英語で解説している動画も配信されており、取組をスローモーションにして、「今まわしを取ろうとしています、足を掛けようとしています」などの英訳もついていて驚きました。日本人よりも相撲に詳しい外国の方も出てくるかもしれませんね。

本日千秋楽の結びの取り組みは琴桜と安青錦、大の里と豊昇龍。かなり白熱しそうで楽しみです。

The Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament finally reaches its final day today. The championship race is incredibly tight and exciting. The previous day saw upsets as both Yokozuna suffered losses. Onozato lost to Kotosakura, and Hoshōryū fell to Aonishiki. This leaves Hoshōryū, Onozato, and Aonishiki tied at 11 wins and 3 losses.

Yesterday’s bout where Aonishiki pushed out the massive Hoshoryu felt like a different level of intensity and awe compared to the sumo I know.

Going back to last month, the Grand Sumo Tournament in London was held at the Royal Albert Hall from October 15th to 19th and was apparently a huge success. It seems this was the first time in 34 years since 1991 that a tournament was held in London. Tickets for the opening day reportedly sold out immediately, surprising me with the popularity of sumo in the UK.

Beyond the wrestlers’ bouts, it seems the British audience also experienced Japanese traditional culture and spirituality through sacred rituals like ring preparation, the Yokozuna ring entrance, and the rope-throwing ceremony. The audience’s timing for the “Yoshō!” shouts was spot on too.

I also felt the wrestlers were sprinkling the “purifying salt” more dramatically than usual… perhaps as a service to the audience? It drew huge cheers.

Ura seemed particularly popular during the UK tour. When he executed his signature move, the “tsutae-zori” (a technique where he makes his opponent pass under his armpit and then throws them backward), the venue erupted. He even earned the nickname “Magician.” Kotoeiho’s magnificent shiko, lifting his leg high, also drew huge applause. British sumo fans surely increased dramatically overnight.

Occasional mispronunciations of wrestlers’ names added to the charm. It was amusing to hear the commentator cheer, “Good footwork! Kimura Shonosuke!” to the “gyoji” (referee) nimbly darting around the ring – something unthinkable in Japan.

I’ve always watched these bouts on video sites, but recently, videos with English commentary have started streaming. They even slow down the action with English translations like “He’s trying to grab the mawashi now, trying to hook his leg in.” It’s surprising. Maybe some foreigners know sumo better than Japanese fans do.

Today’s final day, the closing bouts feature Kotosakura vs. Aonishiki and Onozato vs. Hoshoryu. They look like they’ll be quite heated, and I’m looking forward to them.

三連休に入りましたね！。皆様いかがお過ごしでしょうか。

本日はここ名古屋、紅葉も相まっで絶好の行楽日和でして、自分調べでは一年の中でランキング1，2位くらいに外に人がでている感じがするのですが…。しかもですねリュックを背負った方が多く、みなさん楽しそうに見えます。

この近辺ですと東山や覚王山界隈を散策するのでしょうか、古美術風光舎近辺はふらりと散策したりお店に入ったりご飯を食べたり、また東山植物園にかけては街路樹の紅葉もすばらしく絶好の散策ルートでして、しかも電車でアクセスできますので個人的はおススメルートでありますので、是非是非楽しんできてください。あ、お時間ありましたら古美術風光舎にも是非お立ち寄りください。

実は、個人的にこの秋トライしてみたいことがまさにその「街歩き」でして。

先日、京都へ行った際に普通の民家のある道を歩きながら目的地を目指したり、乗ったことのないルートでバスに乗ったり、それがけっこうスリリングで結構な脳トレになった気がしました笑。普段はほぼ決まったルートを走る車の生活なので地理や交通機関の感覚もつかめない街を、ランチのお店や見学箇所の予約時間や、帰りの新幹線の時間などなどいろんな制約を感じました。（いかにふだん自由気ままな田舎者であるかがバレますよね）

そんな中でも、見学場所にぴったりに到着できたり、思わぬ素敵な景色に出くわしたり、よくわからない街を散策すると、スリリングとなにやら達成感もあったりして、こんなお天気ですとあの感覚がまた味わいたくなってきました。ベストシーズンは短いですので、是非ともどこかでまた「街歩き」ができればよいのですが…。

The three-day weekend has begun! How is everyone spending theirs?

Today here in Nagoya, the autumn leaves are at their peak, making it perfect weather for outings. Based on my observations, it feels like the number one or two busiest days of the year for people heading outdoors… And what’s more, many are carrying backpacks and seem to be having a great time.

Around here, people might be strolling around the Higashiyama or Kakuozan areas. Near the Antique Art Fuko-sha, you can casually wander, pop into shops, grab a bite to eat, or head over to the Higashiyama Botanical Gardens. The autumn colors of the street trees along the way are stunning, making it a perfect walking route. Plus, it’s easily accessible by train, so personally, I highly recommend it. Please do enjoy it! Oh, and if you have time, please stop by Antique Art Fuko-sha too.

Actually, personally, what I really want to try this autumn is precisely that “street walking.”

The other day when I went to Kyoto, I walked along streets lined with ordinary houses to reach my destination, or took buses on routes I’d never ridden before. It felt quite thrilling and like a decent brain workout, haha. Since I usually drive almost exclusively on fixed routes, I felt constrained by various factors—like the time for lunch reservations, sightseeing spots, and my return Shinkansen schedule—in a city where I had no sense of geography or public transport. (It really shows how much of a carefree country bumpkin I am normally, doesn’t it?)

Even so, arriving perfectly on time at a sightseeing spot, stumbling upon unexpectedly beautiful scenery, or just wandering through unfamiliar streets brought a thrill and a sense of accomplishment. With weather like this, I find myself wanting to experience that feeling again. The best season is short, so I really hope I can go on another “city stroll” somewhere soon…

アニメ映画「『鬼滅の刃』無限城編　第一章　猗窩座再来」の全世界興行収入が1000億円を超えたことが発表されました。しかも、これは日本映画初の快挙だそうですね。

「無限城編」は現在、日本国内では379億円とのことですので、国内興行収入は400億円超を記録した前作の「『鬼滅の刃』無限列車編」にまだ届いていないのですが、海外で日本の2倍近くの興行収入があったことになります。アニメ作品は、家族みんなで見に行くというより、熱狂的なファンが劇場に訪れるものという印象がありますが、一体どれくらいの人が映画館に足繫く通ったのでしょうか。

『鬼滅の刃』の主人公・竈門炭治郎の羽織の柄は、黒と緑の「市松紋様」ですが、映画の影響か、もはや「市松紋様」＝炭次郎と言っても過言ではないかもしれません。

この令和では「炭治郎文様」と名前が変わってしまうかも？しれない「市松紋様」ですが、店内に、手に取るのをためらってしまう小さな銀製の宝石箱にも、その「市松紋様」が使われています。

こちらの小さな銀製の宝石箱は、手のひらにのる可愛らしいサイズで、中が小さな箪笥のようになっています。

金工品と呼ばれるそうで、金・銀・銅・鉄・錫などの金属を加工してできる工芸品の総称です。こちらは昭和初期のものですが、日本では弥生時代に中国大陸・朝鮮半島から伝わった金工技術によって剣や銅鐸、装身具などが作られたのが始まりなのだとか。

外側には常緑樹で不老長寿の象徴とされる松が彫られ、正面と側面に一羽ずつ小鳥が装飾されています。おしどりでしょうか。金具にも細かく細工がされ、葉の形から「ナズナ」にも見えます。春の七草の一つで長寿や無病息災の縁起の良い植物です。

扉を開けると３段の小引き出しにそれぞれ違った文様が装飾されています。１段目は市松模様、２段目は青海波、３段目は鹿の子でしょうか。

1段目の市松模様は２色の違う正方形を交互に並べて構成される文様で、連続する四角が途切れずに続くことから「子孫繁栄」や「事業の拡大」を意味します。

竈門 炭治郎の衣装と同じ、黒と緑のこの「市松文様」。古墳の埴輪や法隆寺・正倉院の染織品にも見られ、古代より存在した紋様とされ、もともとは「石畳」「霰（あられ）」などの名称でしたが、江戸時代中期に人気を博した歌舞伎役者の佐野川市松が、白と紺の石畳の袴をはいて流行したことから「市松文様」と呼ばれるようになりました。「市松文様」の着物は浮世絵にも描かれており、当時の人気ぶりが伺えます。

２段目は青海波。半円を三重に連続させて波を表現しています。発祥はペルシャとされていますが、名前の由来は雅楽の演目「青海波」とされています。終わりなく続いていく波模様には未来永劫穏やかに暮らしていけますようにとの願いが込められ、結婚のお祝いでよく使われます。

３段目の鹿の子文様は、小鹿の背中に見られる白い斑紋を表現しており、鹿の子文様の絞り染めは手間がかかるため高級品とされています。日本の歴史において鹿は神様からの使いだと考えられ、現在でも春日大社や鹿島神社のなどでは鹿を手厚く保護しています。鹿は繁殖力と生命力の強い動物で、子孫繁栄や長寿の意味もあり縁起の良い文様とされています。

扉の内側の桜も昔から「五穀豊穣」や「繁栄」の象徴とされており、この小さな宝石箱には幸せを願う気持ちが目いっぱいに詰め込まれています。昭和初期のお品ながら、輝きはまだまだ失われておりません。是非ごらんになっていただきたいお品です。

The worldwide box office revenue for the animated film “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Infinity Castle Arc: Chapter One – The Return of Akaza” has surpassed 100 billion yen. Moreover, this marks the first time a Japanese film has achieved this feat.

The “Infinity Castle Arc” has currently grossed ¥37.9 billion domestically in Japan. While this hasn’t yet surpassed the ¥40 billion domestic box office of its predecessor, “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Infinity Train Arc,” it has generated nearly double that amount overseas. While anime films often seem to attract passionate fans rather than entire families, one wonders just how many people made repeated trips to the theaters.

The pattern on the haori worn by Demon Slayer’s protagonist, Kamado Tanjiro, is a black and green “ichimatsu mon” (checkered pattern). It might not be an exaggeration to say that “ichimatsu mon” is now synonymous with Tanjiro.

In this Reiwa era, the “ichimatsu pattern” might just get renamed the “Tanjiro pattern”? This pattern adorns a small silver jewelry box inside the store, one so delicate you might hesitate to pick it up.

This small silver jewelry box is a charming size that fits in the palm of your hand, with an interior resembling a miniature chest of drawers.

It’s apparently called a metalwork piece, a general term for crafts made by processing metals like gold, silver, copper, iron, and tin. This particular piece dates back to the early Showa period, but in Japan, metalworking techniques first arrived from the Chinese mainland and the Korean Peninsula during the Yayoi period, leading to the creation of swords, bronze bells, and ornaments.

The exterior is carved with pine trees, evergreen symbols of longevity. A small bird adorns both the front and side panels—perhaps mandarin ducks? The metal fittings also feature intricate detailing; the leaf shapes resemble shepherd’s purse (Nazuna), one of the Seven Herbs of Spring, a plant symbolizing longevity and good health.

Opening the doors reveals three small drawers, each decorated with a different pattern. The first drawer features a checkerboard pattern, the second an ocean wave pattern, and the third possibly a deer-spot pattern.

The first tier’s checkerboard pattern consists of alternating squares of two different colors. Its continuous sequence of squares symbolizes “prosperous descendants” and “business expansion.”

This black and green “checkered pattern” matches Tanjiro Kamado’s costume. It can be seen on ancient burial mound haniwa clay figures and dyed textiles from Horyuji Temple and Shosoin Repository, indicating it existed since ancient times. Originally called names like “stone pavement” or “hail,” it gained its current name “ichimatsu pattern” when the popular Kabuki actor Sano Kawamatsu wore hakama trousers with a white and navy stone pavement pattern in the mid-Edo period, making it fashionable. Kimonos featuring the “Ichimatsu pattern” were depicted in ukiyo-e prints, reflecting its immense popularity at the time.

The second tier features the “Seigaiha” (blue ocean waves) pattern. It depicts waves by connecting three concentric semicircles. While its origin is believed to be Persian, the name is derived from the gagaku (court music) piece “Seigaiha.” The endless wave pattern embodies the wish for eternal peace and tranquility, making it a common motif for wedding celebrations.

The third tier features the shikono pattern, depicting the white spots on a fawn’s back. Shikono-patterned shibori dyeing is labor-intensive, making it a luxury item. Throughout Japanese history, deer were considered messengers from the gods, and even today, shrines like Kasuga Taisha and Kashima Shrine protect them carefully. Deer are animals known for their strong reproductive power and vitality, symbolizing the prosperity of descendants and longevity, making this pattern highly auspicious.

The cherry blossoms inside the lid have long symbolized “bountiful harvests” and “prosperity.” This small jewel box is filled to the brim with wishes for happiness. Though dating from the early Showa period, its brilliance remains undimmed. It is truly a piece we hope you will see.
