昨日名古屋では桜の開花発表がありました。千種区の名古屋地方気象台で、職員がソメイヨシノの標本木に５輪以上の花を確認し、桜の開花を発表しました。前年よりも２日早い開花だそうです。

「満開日」は標本木の約８０％以上のつぼみが開いた最初の日とされています。ご近所の桜の蕾が膨らんでいるのを見るだけで気分が高揚いたします。

 

 

 

 

そしてタイミングも良く、本日３月２７日は「さくらの日」とのこと。私存じ上げませんでした。さくらの日は１９９２年に公益財団法人の「日本さくらの会」によって制定されたそうです。「日本を代表する桜の花への関心を高めると共に、花と緑の豊かな国土づくり」を目的として制定されました。

３月２７日とされたのは、「３×９（さくら、咲く）」＝２７の語呂合わせからきているのと、七十二候の一つである「桜始開（さくらはじめてひらく）」の時期と重なるという意味合いがあるそうです。

何日頃に咲くんだっけ？などどこの歳になっても毎年忘れてしまう私にとって語呂合わせは助かります。

 

この時期、日本各地で桜まつりなどのイベントが開催されますね。地元名古屋のイベントを少し調べてみました。

 

※リニューアルで話題の鶴舞公園。名古屋で桜といえばここと言われる名所ですね。

３月２０日から４月６日まで桜まつりが開催され、ライトアップされた夜桜が楽しめます。キッチンカ―やビアガーデンなども出店します。

また３月２９日（土）、３０日（日）に「春のワイン祭り」と称し、桜とワインとグルメを堪能できるなんとも贅沢で魅力的なイベントが開催されるそうです。ワイン祭り、行きたい！

約１００種類の桜が千本以上咲き誇り、ウオークラリーや淑徳大学の学生によるポップアップカフェなどが出店するそうです。

期間中の土日にはジャズコンサート、ワークショップなどが行われ、カフェやパニーニのお店、美濃加茂茶舗、キッチンカ―も出店します。

ライトアップは１８時から２１時となっており、水面に映る桜が圧巻だそうです。

こちらの桜まつり、かなり活気がありそうです。

 

いつも花見はご近所で済ませておりましたが、少し遠出してみるのも新鮮でいいかもしれません。

 

通勤時、今日は咲いているかなと楽しみにしている駅前の桜の木。まだ蕾のままですが、夕闇を背にすっくと立つ姿が美しくて思わず撮影してしまいました。桜の木には「盃状」の樹形と「傘状」の樹形があるそうで、盃状はヤエザクラ、サトザクラ、傘状はヤマザクラ、オオシマザクラ、ソメイヨシノ、エドヒガンなどと区別できるようです。駅前のさくらは盃状？毎年何も考えず、ただ見とれて見上げております。

Yesterday in Nagoya, the cherry blossoms were announced to be in full bloom. At the Nagoya District Meteorological Observatory in Chikusa-ku, an official confirmed more than five blossoms on a specimen Someiyoshino tree and announced the blooming of cherry trees. This is two days earlier than the previous year.

The “full bloom” date is considered to be the first day when more than 80% of the buds on the specimen trees have opened. Just seeing the buds of the cherry trees in our neighborhood swell up is enough to lift our spirits.

And, just in time, today, March 27, is “Sakura Day. I did not know this. Sakura Day was established in 1992 by the Japan Cherry Blossom Society, a public interest incorporated foundation. It was established to “increase interest in cherry blossoms, which represent Japan, and to create a country rich in flowers and greenery.

The reason why March 27 was chosen as the date is said to be because “3 x 9 (Sakura, blooming)” = 27, and also because it coincides with the time of “Sakura Hajimete Hiraku” (the first opening of cherry blossoms), one of the 72 weather conditions.

What day do you think it blooms? I always forget the time of the year no matter how old I get, so the combination of words is very helpful for me.

During this time of year, many events such as cherry blossom festivals are held in various parts of Japan. I did a little research on events in my hometown Nagoya.

Tsurumai Park has been the talk of the town since its renewal. It is one of the most famous places in Nagoya when it comes to cherry blossoms.

The Cherry Blossom Festival will be held from March 20 to April 6, and visitors can enjoy the illuminated nighttime cherry blossoms. Kitchen cars and beer gardens will also be open.

Beer garden open from 11:00 to 21:30

 

Also, on March 29 (Sat.) and 30 (Sun.), an extravagant and attractive event called “Spring Wine Festival” will be held, where you can enjoy cherry blossoms, wine, and gourmet food. I want to go to the wine festival!

More than 1,000 cherry trees of about 100 varieties will be in full bloom, and there will be a walk rally and pop-up cafes by Shukutoku University students.

From April 5 to 13, the event will open until 8:30 p.m. as “Evening Yaezakura Walk. Visitors can enjoy the illuminated yaezakura cherry blossoms.

The Cherry Blossom Festival at Arakogawa Park in Minato Ward is a must-see event, with cherry trees lining the banks of the Arakogawa River for a kilometer-long stretch.

Tuesday, March 25 to Sunday, April 6

Jazz concerts and workshops will be held on Saturdays and Sundays during the festival, and cafes, panini stores, Minokamo tea shops, and kitchen cars will be open.

The cherry blossoms are lit up from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., and the reflections on the water are said to be breathtaking.

This cherry blossom festival is expected to be quite lively.

 

I have always enjoyed cherry blossom viewing in my neighborhood, but it might be nice to get out of the city for a while.

 

When I commute to work, I look forward to seeing the cherry trees in front of the station to see if they are in bloom today. It is still in bud, but I couldn’t help but take a picture of it because of its beautiful appearance standing tall with the setting sun in the background. There are two types of cherry trees: “cup-shaped” and “umbrella-shaped.” The cup-shaped trees are called yaezakura and satozakura, while the umbrella-shaped trees are called yamazakura, oshimazakura, someiyoshino, and edohigan. Are the cherry trees in front of the station cup-shaped? Every year, I look up at them without thinking.

 

I look forward to seeing them bloom profusely all the way to the tips of these thin branches.

昨日からの黄砂のせいでしょうか、目に違和感があり涙が止まりません。黄砂は花粉に比べかなり小さいため体内に入り込みやすく呼吸器疾患やアレルギー症状が悪化するとも言われています。

また砂漠の砂ということで鋭利なガラス質の粒でできているため服にも付着しやすく手で払うだけでは取れにくいのだそうです。最近は注意喚起もされるようになりましたが、車に降り積もった黄砂はそのまま布で拭くとキズが付くことがあるので、たっぷりの水で洗い流す必要があるそうです。

温かい日差しに心弾む季節になりましたが、マスクから解放される日はまだまだ遠そうです。

 

さて先日から気になっておりました細長いかんざしのような、ペーパーナイフのようなお品。笄（こうがい）と呼ばれるものです。笄には女性の髪飾りとして使用されたものと、武士が身だしなみを整える道具として刀の鞘に付けられていたものがあり、いずれも室町時代に生まれたとされています。

 

 

 

 

 

写真の笄は刀に収められていた男性用の笄のようです。武士がまげを整えたり、頭を掻いたりするときに用いられました。先端部が耳かきの形に似ているなと思っていましたら「耳掻（みみかき）」という名称だそうで、実際に耳かきとして使われていたのでしょうか？その下の弦のようにくるんと丸まった模様が「蕨手（わらびて）」と呼ばれ、それにつづく地板の上に紋が施され、先に行くほど細くなっています。

笄は帯刀した時に体の外側に向く面にある「笄櫃（こうがいひつ）」に収められ、鞘の反対側の体に接する方には小さいナイフのような「小柄（こづか）」が「小柄櫃（こづかびつ）」に納められていました。江戸時代には「笄」と「小柄」、そして柄を握った時の調子を良くするための金具「目貫（めぬき）」を同じ意匠で揃えることが粋だとされ、この三つは「三所物」と呼ばれていました。

 

風光舎の笄は中で二つに割れている「割笄（わりこうがい）」と呼ばれるもので、店主に見せてもらった時は「SDGs？」「マイ箸？」と驚きましたが、箸として使っていたかは定かではないようです。しかし髪結い道具と耳掻きと箸を合わせたものを無駄のないスタイリッシュなデザインに仕上げたのだとしたら、今ならグッドデザイン賞をもらえるほどの出来ではないでしょうか。昔の人々のセンスは侮れません。

 

 

 

 

室町時代前期までは簡素な文様が多かった刀装具ですが、室町時代中期頃から芸術性の高いものが作られようになり、龍や獅子、花鳥や家紋などが施されるようになっていきました。素材も鉄や銅に代わり、金や赤銅（銅に金を加えた合金）などが用いられるようなります。

笄の地板と呼ばれる部分も、本体に直接文様を彫り込んだ「地彫（じぼり）」や、別に彫った紋を穴を開けた地板に打ち込んで組み込む「据紋（すえもん）」。薄い金属板に文様を彫り、完成してからはめ込む「地板嵌込式（じいたはめこみしき）」など時代と共に構造の変化があるようです。

耳掻の横の蕨手の文様も年代によって微妙に違っているため時代を特定する目安になっているとか。 Continue reading →

晴れていますが、空は霞んでいます。今年も黄砂が飛んできましたね。花粉よりも黄砂の方がダメなようで、体調も微妙です…。

ご存知の通り、黄砂は、中国大陸奥地のタクラマカン砂漠やゴビ砂漠などで舞い上がった砂ぼこりが飛んでくる現象です。上空の強い風によって、遠く離れた日本へも飛んできます。黄砂が最も多く観測されるのは、春(3～5月)です。昨日は急なゲリラ豪雨あり、もうそんな時季が来たのだな…と思いました。

 

季節の移り変わりをあらわす七十二候にも「雷乃発声（かみなりすなわちこえをはっす）」があります。名前がとても長い七十二候です。たぶん、七十二候の中で一番長いのではないでしょうか。その分インパクトの強い七十二候ですが、読んで字のごとく遠くで雷の音がしはじめる、という意味です。

 

ところで、雷の語源はなんでしょうか。

古来、日本で「雷」は「神鳴り」と表記され、文字通り、神の力で引き起こされる現象と考えられていました。
鬼の姿で背中には太鼓を背負い、それを打ち鳴らす雷神。今では空想上のものだと思われていますが、昔は本当に雷神が存在していて、雷を鳴らしていると考えられていました。

当時の人々はどれほど恐ろしかったことか。かの清少納言も「枕草子」の中でその脅威について書き記しています。 彼女もかなり苦手だったみたいですね。

 

おまじないで『くわばら、くわばら』という言葉があります。おばあちゃん世代は使ったかもしれない「くわばら、くわばら」というこのくわばらとは何のことでしょう？

『くわばら、くわばら』とは雷除けのおまじないの言葉ですが、実は地名なのです。

これは平安時代、流刑された菅原道真がその恨みから宮中に雷を落とし、その中で唯一「桑原」という土地だけ雷が落ちなかったという話に由来しています。

道真の死後、次々と不幸が見舞われ、京の町中あちらこちらに何度も雷が落ちたのですが、一ヵ所だけ落ちなかった場所があり、それが桑原＝くわばら、だったのです。それ以来、町中の人たちは、雷が鳴るとこの「くわばら、くわばら」と唱えるようになり、おまじないが浸透していったようですよ。

It is sunny but the sky is hazy. Yellow dust has flown in again this year. It seems that yellow sand is worse than pollen, and my health condition is delicate…

As you know, yellow sand is a phenomenon in which dust from the Taklamakan Desert and the Gobi Desert in the interior of the Chinese continent is blown in. Strong winds in the sky above the country can carry it to Japan, which is far away. DSS is most frequently observed in spring (March to May). Yesterday’s sudden downpour made me realize that the season has already arrived….

 

The forecast for the weekend is for cooler temperatures and cooler flowers. These days, it rains periodically, and the temperature changes rapidly from high to low. It is the season of “warmer weather with each rainfall.

The phenomenon that occurs at this time of year is “spring thunder,” which is also a seasonal term in haiku.
Thunder may have a strong image of midsummer, but it can also occur during this season. Literally, it is the thunder that signals the arrival of spring.

The 72nd season, which represents the changing of the seasons, also includes “kaminari nokoe hahassu” (雷乃発声, meaning “the sound of thunder”). It is a very long-named 72-weather season. It is probably the longest of the 72 seasons. As you can read, it means that the sound of thunder begins to be heard in the distance.

 

By the way, what is the origin of the word “thunder”?

Since ancient times, “thunder” in Japan has been written as “kaminari,” literally meaning “divine sound,” and was thought to be a phenomenon caused by the power of the gods.
The god of thunder, in the form of an ogre, bears a drum on his back and beats it to the ground. Nowadays it is thought to be imaginary, but in the old days it was believed that the god of thunder really existed and was sounding the thunder.

How terrifying it must have been for the people of that time. Even the famous Sei Shonagon wrote about the threat in her “Pillow Book. It seems that she was not very good at it either.

 

There is a word “Kuwabara, Kuwabara” as a spell. What does “Kuwabara, Kuwabara” mean, which grandmother’s generation might have used?

Kuwabara, kuwabara” is a word for a spell to ward off lightning, but it is actually the name of a place.

It is derived from a story that during the Heian period (794-1185), Michizane Sugawara, who was exiled from Japan, caused lightning to strike the court out of resentment, and that Kuwabara was the only place among them where lightning did not strike.

After Michizane’s death, the town of Kyoto was struck by lightning many times, but there was only one place where lightning did not strike, and that was Kuwabara, or Kuwabara. Since then, people in the town started chanting “Kuwabara, Kuwabara, Kuwabara” whenever lightning strikes, and the spell seems to have spread.

 

Spring thunder” heralds the arrival of spring.
The word is seasonal and has a very elegant feel to it, but the change of seasons and weather can be a bit tiring. However, the cherry blossoms begin to bloom and thunder begins to rumble in the distant sky…. I feel that the seasons, which flow in order every year, somehow reassure me.

春の陽気に誘われるのは、どうやら人間だけではないようで、ここ覚王山で店主がよく出会うという黒猫ちゃんもお散歩中のようでしたので、お写真をパシャリ。

しっかりとカメラ目線でポージングしてくれたその姿は、あの菱田春草の代表作『黒き猫』のような佇まいです。

 

 

菱田春草と言えば、近代の日本美術史には欠かせない超大物。岡倉天心の門下生として横山大観や下村観山らとともに日本美術院を支え、いわゆる「朦朧体」を生み出した一人ですが、まずはその経歴を。

 

1874年、現在の長野県飯田市に生まれた菱田春草は、16歳にして東京美術学校（現在の東京藝術大学）に第二期生として入学。ひとつ上の学年には、横山大観や下村観山がいました。彼らとは卒業後にも長期にわたって共に活動することとなるわけですが、春草は在学中から才覚を現し、その名声と期待は非常に大きなものであったとされています。

その後、岡倉天心が新たに発足させた美術団体・日本美術院の正員となり、横山大観らとともに、日本の伝統絵画に西洋絵画の技法を取り入れた新たな日本画の創造に尽力しました。線の描画に頼らず、色彩の濃淡によって対象を表現したその技法は、「朦朧体」と呼ばれています。

 

31歳のときには、横山大観らとともに海外の技術を学ぶためにインドやアメリカを訪問し、各地で個展を開催しました。当時、絵で表現するにはあまりにもデリケートな光や空気を日本画で表現する「朦朧体」への挑戦は、日本では評価されませんでしたが、海外ではその画風が「神秘的」と高い評価を受けることとなります。そして、海外での評価とともに日本での画家としての地位も上昇していきます。

 

ところが評価を受けていく最中、34歳のときに網膜炎を患います。眼病に苦しんだ早過ぎる晩年、本当に目が悪かったのか、と思うほど精力的に作品を残し続けました。そんな中で描かれた「落葉」や「黒き猫」はのちに重要文化財に指定され、彼の代表作となりました。しかし、ついには36歳で失明。その１か月後に腎臓病でこの世を去りました。

 

春草は同期の横山大観ほど評価はされていませんでしたが、日本画家の巨匠、横山大観は、自分が周りに褒められるたびに、「春草こそ本当の天才だ。もしもあいつ（春草）が生きていたら、俺なんかよりずっと上手い」と語っていたと言います。

それほど絵の才能があったんですね。

 

菱田春草の作風の特徴は、輪郭を用いずにモチーフを彩色または水墨で描くこと。この「朦朧体」と呼ばれている技法は、恩師であった岡倉天心が「なんとか空気を絵で表現する方法はないか」と問いかけたことがきっかけに、盟友である横山大観と共に試行錯誤を重ね、生まれたと言われています。

「黒き猫」に描かれた黒猫を見てみますと、ふわふわとした質感が一番最初に目につきます。この猫の毛並みは墨のにじみで表現されています。元々線で描くのが一般的な常識だった日本画ですので、この当時の常識から外れたもやもやした表現方法は「かすんでいて、はっきりしていない」と言うことから批判されてしまったわけですね。

 

 

欧米文化が伝わる前、江戸時代から幸運を呼ぶ生き物だとされていた黒猫。黒猫を飼うと結核が治るという迷信が広がり、新選組の沖田総司も結核を治すために黒猫を飼っていたのだとか。そういえば、夏目漱石の『吾輩は猫である』のモデルになった猫もたしか黒猫。黒猫の性格は人懐っこく甘えん坊だといわれていますが、もし黒猫がすり寄ってきたときは、幸運の予兆なのかもしれませんよ。

It seems that it is not only humans who are lured by the spring weather, as a black cat that the owner often encounters here in Kakuozan was also out for a walk.

Hishida Shunso is an extremely important figure in the history of modern Japanese art. As a student of Tenshin Okakura, he supported the Nihon Bijutsuin (Japan Art Institute) along with Taikan Yokoyama and Kanzan Shimomura, and was one of the creators of the so-called “Fuoborotai” style of painting.

 

Born in 1874 in what is now Iida City, Nagano Prefecture, Hishida Shunso entered the Tokyo Fine Arts School (now Tokyo University of the Arts) as a second-generation student at the age of 16. One year above him were Yokoyama Taikan and Shimomura Kanzan. Shunso’s reputation and expectations were very high, as he showed great talent while still a student at the school.

Later, Shunso became a regular member of the Nippon Bijutsuin, an art organization newly established by Tenshin Okakura, and worked with Taikan Yokoyama and others to create a new style of Japanese painting that incorporated Western painting techniques into traditional Japanese painting. His technique of expressing the subject through shades of color, rather than relying on lines, is known as “Fuoborotai” (fuzzy style).

 

At the age of 31, he visited India and the United States to study overseas techniques with Yokoyama Taikan and others, and held solo exhibitions in various places. At the time, his challenge to create “Fuoborotai,” a Japanese style of painting in which light and air, which are too delicate to be expressed in painting, were not well received in Japan, but his style was highly acclaimed overseas as “mystical. His status as a painter in Japan rose along with his reputation overseas.

 

However, in the midst of his growing reputation, he suffered from retinitis at the age of 34. During the last years of his life, he suffered from an eye disease and continued to leave behind works so energetically that one wonders if he really had a bad eye. His paintings “Falling Leaves” and “Black Cat” were later designated as important cultural properties and became his masterpieces. However, he finally lost his sight at the age of 36. A month later, he died of kidney disease.

 

Although Shunso was not as highly regarded as his colleague Yokoyama Taikan, the master Japanese-style painter Yokoyama Taikan said whenever he was praised by others, “Shunso is the real genius. If he (Shunso) were alive, he would be much better than I am.

He was such a talented painter.

 

A characteristic of Hishida’s style is that he painted motifs in colors or ink without using outlines. This technique, known as “fuzzy style,” is said to have been created through a process of trial and error with Yokoyama Taikan, a close friend of Hishida’s. Tenshin Okakura, Hishida’s former teacher, asked Hishida if there was some way to express the atmosphere in his paintings.

When we look at the black cat depicted in “The Black Cat,” the fluffy texture is the first thing we notice. The fur of this cat is expressed by the blurring of black ink. Since it was originally common practice in Japanese painting to draw with lines, this method of expression was criticized because it was “hazy and indistinct,” which was out of the norm at the time.

 

Before the arrival of Western culture, black cats had been considered lucky creatures since the Edo period (1603-1868). A superstition spread that owning a black cat would cure tuberculosis, and even Soji Okita of the Shinsengumi kept a black cat to cure his tuberculosis. Come to think of it, the cat that served as the model for Soseki Natsume’s “I am a Cat” was also a black cat. It is said that black cats are friendly and sweet-natured. If a black cat comes close to you, it may be a sign of good luck.

春の陽気に誘われてお出かけされている方も多いのではないでしょうか。上着を脱いで手に持っている方も多く見かけ、私も少し歩いただけでじんわりと汗をかきました。あと数ヶ月でやってくる猛暑に備え体に予行練習をさせる良い季節かもしれませんね。

 

さて風光舎に新しく仲間入りしました、永楽の器。小さな片口が可愛く、様々な用途に使えそうです。上部半分には横に波打つように溝があり手に馴染みやすく、また青い縦縞がゆらゆらと揺れているようにも見え美しいです。

ただ凹凸の上をフリーハンドで真っすぐ線を描くのは難しそうですよね。頭の中でシュミレーションしてみましたが、元々絵が不得意なこともあり、絶対に無理だな…と確信しました。

 

 

 

 

外と内に描かれている青い縦縞模様は古くから日本で親しまれてきた模様のひとつで、「十草（とくさ）」とよばれているそうです。植物のトクサがモチーフとなっており、日本では中部地方より北に分布し湿地や岸辺などに自生しているシダ植物です。写真を見ますと「つくし」のように節があり、草というより茎が林立しているような不思議なイメージです。この固くザラザラした茎を木材や爪などを磨くのに使ったことから「砥石になる草」→「砥草」と書かれることもあるようです。固い茎で歯を磨くこともあったようで、「はみがき草」という別名もあるとか。

このトクサの真っすぐに伸びる姿をモチーフとした十草模様は、成長や繁栄の象徴として江戸時代から愛されてきました。また金を磨く時にトクサの葉で磨くと光沢が出ることから「金を呼ぶ」ともいわれ、いずれにしても縁起の良い模様です。

十草模様には綺麗に１本線がひかれているものから、線に強弱があるもの、太さに変化をつけたものなど様々あるそうで、シンプルだからこそ自由度が高いデザインなのでしょうね。

 

京都で茶道具を中心に制作する作陶の名門、永楽家。その歴史は室町時代にまでさかのぼります。祖先は奈良、春日大社の斎器をつくる家柄だったといわれ、宗禅を祖とし、１１代目保全までは西村姓を名乗っていました。９代目までは茶の湯に用いる土風炉の製作を生業としていましたが、１０代目以降は土風炉だけではなく茶陶の分野も手掛けるようになったとのこと。染付、色絵、交趾焼など多種多様で華やかな作風のものが多いとされています。

現在は１７代目永楽善五郎氏が引き継いでいらっしゃいます。

 

この機会に京焼とはと調べてみますと、思った以上に複雑で私ごときには理解が難しく、分かったような、分からないような感覚だけが残りました。京都の様々な窯元がお互いに切磋琢磨し独自の逸品を生み出してきたということでいいでしょうか。ある方が「京焼とは京都のやきものが他の産地や国のものと競う時に使われるもの」と仰っていて、そういう考え方もあるのかと膝を打ちました。

それで納得するだけでなく、もう少しお勉強も必要かと思われます。

I am sure many of you are out and about in the spring weather. I saw many people taking off their jackets and holding them in their hands, and I was sweating just by walking a little. This may be a good time to prepare your body for the heat wave that will be coming in a few months.

 

Now, Eiraku vessels are new additions to the Fuhkosha. It has a cute little one-sided mouth and can be used for a variety of purposes. The top half of the bowl has a horizontal groove that makes it comfortable in the hand, and the blue vertical stripes look as if they are swaying, which is beautiful.

It seems difficult to draw straight lines freehand on the uneven surfaces, doesn’t it? I tried to simulate it in my mind, but I am not good at drawing, and I was convinced that it would be absolutely impossible….

The blue vertical stripe pattern on the outside and inside of the handles is one of the Japanese traditional patterns and is called “Tokusa” (ten grasses). The motif is based on the plant “tokusa,” which is a fern that is found in Japan north of the Chubu region and grows wild in wetlands and along banks. The photo shows that it has knots like “Tsukushi,” giving it a strange image of a forest of stems rather than grass. The hard, rough stems were used to polish wood, nails, and other objects, hence the name “whetstone grass. The hard stems were also used to brush teeth, and it is also known as “hakimigusa.

The ten-weed pattern, based on the straight growth of the tokusa, has been a symbol of growth and prosperity since the Edo period (1603-1868). It is also said to “bring in gold” because of the luster produced when gold is polished with the leaves of the tokusa plant.

There are various types of jyukusa patterns, including those with a single clean line, those with strong and weak lines, and those with varying thicknesses, etc. The simplicity of the design allows for a high degree of freedom.

 

The Eiraku family is a prestigious pottery family in Kyoto that mainly produces tea ceremony utensils. Its history dates back to the Muromachi period (1333-1573). The Eiraku family is said to have been the ancestors of the family that produced the saibi for Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara, and the family name was Nishimura until the 11th generation, when it was succeeded by Sozen. Many of his works are said to be diverse and gorgeous in style, such as tsuchitsuke (underglaze blue), iroe (overglaze blue), and koji-yaki (togi-yaki).

Currently, Eiraku Zengoro, the 17th generation, is taking over the pottery.

 

When I took this opportunity to look into Kyoyaki, I found it to be more complicated than I had expected and difficult for me to understand, leaving me with a feeling of both understanding and not understanding. I guess it can be said that various kilns in Kyoto have created their own unique masterpieces through friendly competition with each other. One person said, “Kyo-yaki is used when Kyoto pottery competes with pottery from other regions or countries,” and I was struck by this idea.

I was struck by this idea. I think I need to study a little more than just agreeing with him.
