本日はここ名古屋、成人式のようですね。

朝から晴れ着を着て、車に乗り込むお嬢さんを見かけました。お天気もなんとか大丈夫そうなのでよかったですね。三連休の真ん中皆様いかがお過ごしでしょうか。

さて、本日は鏡開き。我が家のお鏡餅もちょうど良いひびが入ってきておりましていい感じになってきております。

先日もちらっと呟いたのですが、鏡開きの日は一般的には毎年1月11日なのですが、地域によって少し違いがあるようですね。関西出身の自分も当初は、え？11日？と違和感がありました。

1月11日鏡開きの地域は、東北、関東、九州など多くの地域なのですが、これらの地域は松の内（門松などを飾る期間）が1月7日まででして、鏡開きは11日に行っています。

また、1月15日の地域は関西を中心とした地域でして、松の内が1月15日までとなり、鏡開きは15日または20日に行います。

さらには1月4日の地方もあるようでして、京都と近隣の一部の地域なのですが、松の内にかかわらず三が日が明けたら鏡開きを行います。

ところで、この日にちの地方差はなんなんでしょうね、しかも11日という半端な日に鏡開きはどういう意味なのでしょうね。ちょっと調べたのですが、かつては全国的に松の内は15日まで、鏡開きは15日or20日だったようです。

20日の場合は、武家の具足祝いを、刀の「刃」と「柄」にかけて「刃柄の祝い（はつかのいわい）」は「二十日の祝い」と呼んで20日に行っていたようです。

それが江戸三代将軍・徳川家光が4月20日に亡くなると、月命日の20日の祝い事を避けるようなります。そこで幕府は、松の内を7日までとさだめ、大名家や商家が「蔵開き」と呼んで使用人や得意先にお餅やおとそをふるまっていた11日に合わせるようになったのだとか。

また、1657（明暦3）年1月に江戸で起こった「明暦の大火」の反省で、燃えやすい松飾りを早めに片付けるため、松の内を短縮したという説もあります。幕府のお触れなので浸透するのに差があり、もともとの習慣が生き残った地域もあったと考えられています。

それにしても、鏡開きの日は絶妙。乾燥してきたお餅にちょうどよく割りやすいひびがはいってきて、個人的にはお餅の具合に合わせたんだろうな笑、なんて思うのですが、今年も相変わらず我が家では、割ったお餅はぜんざいの中へダイブしていくのですが、なにか違ったメニューはないのか…が、このところの悩みであります。

Today here in Nagoya seems to be Coming-of-Age Day.

I saw young ladies dressed in their formal kimonos, climbing into cars since this morning. The weather seems to be holding up, which is good news. How is everyone spending the middle of this three-day weekend?

Now, today is Kagami Biraki. Our family’s kagami mochi has developed just the right cracks and is looking perfect.

I mentioned this briefly the other day, but while Kagami Biraki is generally held on January 11th each year, it seems to vary slightly by region. As someone originally from Kansai, I initially thought, “Huh? The 11th?” and felt a bit out of place.

Regions celebrating Kagami Biraki on January 11th include Tohoku, Kanto, Kyushu, and many others. In these areas, the Matsunouchi period (when kadomatsu decorations are displayed) lasts until January 7th, so Kagami Biraki is held on the 11th.

Regions celebrating on January 15th are mainly centered around Kansai. Here, Matsunouchi lasts until January 15th, so Kagami Biraki is held on the 15th or 20th.

Furthermore, some areas, like Kyoto and nearby regions, hold Kagami Biraki on January 4th, regardless of the Matsunouchi period, once the first three days of the new year have passed.

By the way, what’s the reason for these regional differences in dates? And what’s the significance of holding Kagami Biraki on the 11th, such an odd date? I did a bit of research and found that historically, Matsunouchi lasted until the 15th nationwide, with Kagami Biraki held on either the 15th or 20th.

When it was the 20th, it was called the “twentieth day celebration” (hatsuka no iwai), a play on words for the samurai’s armor celebration (hatsuka no iwai), linking the blade (ha) and the hilt (tsuka) of the sword.

However, when the third shogun of Edo, Tokugawa Iemitsu, died on April 20th, celebrations on the 20th became avoided to steer clear of his monthly memorial day. Consequently, the shogunate set the Matsunouchi period to end on the 7th, aligning it with the 11th—a day when daimyo families and merchant houses held “Kurabiraki” (warehouse opening ceremonies), serving mochi rice cakes and otoso sake to their servants and clients.

Another theory suggests the period was shortened after the Great Fire of Meireki in January 1657 (Meireki 3), as a precaution to remove flammable pine decorations earlier. Since this was a shogunate decree, its adoption varied, and some regions retained the original custom.

Even so, the timing for Kagami Biraki is perfect. Cracks form just right in the dried mochi, making it easy to break apart. Personally, I think they timed it to match the mochi’s condition, haha. As usual this year, the broken mochi dives straight into our zenzai. But lately, I’ve been wondering… isn’t there some other menu option?

先日は七草がゆを食べ、来る関東では1月11日、関西では1月15日に鏡開き、スーパーにはそろそろ節分の豆まきが並び始め…と、このところの時間の流れはちょっとめまぐるしいのですが、個人的に大河ドラマのチェックもこの時期の毎年の自分の恒例行事でもありまして笑。

今年の大河ドラマ「豊臣兄弟！」、舞台のスタートはもちろん尾張（名古屋）でありました。戦国ものですと、ここ尾張地域はどうしてもはずせない場所ですので、何年かに一度はゆかりの地巡りに忙しくなってしまいがちなんですよね…。

ご存知のとおり舞台は中村（現在の中村区）の実家から始まりましたが、今年はここ尾張（名古屋）ということで、豊臣兄弟ゆかりの土地やイベントなどを少しずつご紹介できたらと思っております。

今日はその第一弾。

地元名古屋の方はご存知かと思いますが、先日初詣に訪れた熱田区高蔵町にあります「高座結御子神社」

こちらは神社は熱田神宮の摂社なのですが、古来、子育ての神として信仰が篤く、4月3日に幼児成育祈願祭、続く6月1日には例祭が行われます。また、境内にある御井社（みいしゃ）は「高座の井戸のぞき」として有名でして、数多くの人々が子供を連れて参拝されます。幼児に井戸をのぞかせると「疳（かん）の虫封じ」になるという信仰があります。

そちらも有名なのですが、今回はその境内にある「高座稲荷社」がゆかりの地と言いますか、秀吉ゆかりの神社であります。というか、私も知らなくて先日の初詣の際に偶然みつけました。参道にある小さな稲荷神社なのですが、豊臣秀吉が幼少時に母に連れられて参拝したことから、出世稲荷として知られているそうです。

先にも述べた通りこちらの神社は熱田区にあるのですが、中村区辺りに住んでいた秀吉と母が、なぜこんな小さな神社に参拝にきていたのかな…なんてちょっと考えていたのですが、そういえば、秀吉の母のなか（大政所）が生まれた土地を昭和区御器所の住宅街で偶然見つけたことを思い出しました。

地図を見みるとわかりやすいのですが、この神社はなか（大政所）の生まれた尾張御器所村（現在の名古屋市昭和区）と現在の中村区にお嫁入した中村の中間あたりですので、どこかで話をきいて、なか（大政所）と秀吉がこの神社に立ち寄ることもあったのでしょうね。

また、この神社の一帯はかつて8基の円墳が社殿の西と南に散在して記されており、発掘調査により玄室の他様々な副葬品なども発掘されているようでして、高座結御子神社境内の稲荷社の裏手には高蔵4号墳、その北側の奥に高蔵3号墳があるのがよくわかります。

古墳があることからも、神社が創建される以前から栄えてきた土地でかつての繁栄していたことや、この神社に秀吉と母もここに足を運んだのだな…、なんて古墳好き、歴史好き、神社仏閣好きの方ですと妄想癖をかきたてる神社であります。私もしばし妄想にかられていたのですが、訪れた時は、そんな騒がしい脳内をかき消すべくいたって静かで澄み切った心地のよい境内でありました。

静かに歴史を振り返ることのできる心地よい「高座結御子神社」「高座稲荷社」、初詣まだの方は是非足を運んでみてはいかがでしょうか。いろいろ楽しめます。

The other day we ate seven-herb rice porridge, and soon it’ll be Kagami Biraki on January 11th in Kanto and January 15th in Kansai. Supermarkets are starting to stock beans for Setsubun bean-throwing… Time’s been flying by lately, but personally, checking out the historical drama series is also my annual tradition around this time, haha.

This year’s “Toyotomi Brothers!” naturally began its story in Owari (Nagoya). When it comes to Sengoku period dramas, the Owari region is absolutely essential, so every few years I tend to get busy visiting places connected to it…

As you know, the story started at the family home in Nakamura (present-day Nakamura Ward), but since this year’s setting is here in Owari (Nagoya), I thought I’d gradually introduce places and events connected to the Toyotomi brothers.

Today marks the first installment.

Locals in Nagoya may know this, but recently I visited Takako-cho in Atsuta Ward for the first shrine visit of the year: Takako Musuko Shrine.

This shrine is a subsidiary shrine of Atsuta Shrine, but since ancient times it has been deeply revered as a deity of child-rearing. It holds a ceremony for the healthy growth of infants on April 3rd, followed by its annual festival on June 1st. Also, the Mii Shrine within the grounds is famous as the “Takaza Well Peek,” attracting many people who bring their children to visit. There’s a belief that letting a young child peek into the well wards off “kan no mushi” (a superstition about a mysterious ailment affecting children).

While that well is well-known, this time the focus is on the “Takaza Inari Shrine” within the grounds, which is a shrine associated with Hideyoshi. Actually, I didn’t know about it either and only discovered it by chance during my recent New Year’s visit. It’s a small Inari shrine along the approach path. It’s known as the “Succeeding Inari” because Toyotomi Hideyoshi visited it as a child with his mother.

As mentioned earlier, this shrine is in Atsuta Ward. I found myself wondering why Hideyoshi and his mother, who lived around Nakamura Ward, would come to pray at such a small shrine… Then I remembered that I had also accidentally found the birthplace of Hideyoshi’s mother, Naka (Ōmasadokoro), in a residential area of Shōwa Ward’s Gokiso.

Looking at a map makes it clear: this shrine is roughly midway between Owari Gokiso Village (present-day Showa Ward, Nagoya City), where Naka (Ōmasadokoro) was born, and Nakamura Ward, where she married into the Nakamura family. So, they probably heard about it somewhere and occasionally stopped by this shrine.

Furthermore, records indicate that eight circular burial mounds were once scattered west and south of the shrine’s main hall. Excavations have uncovered burial chambers and various grave goods. Behind the Inari shrine within the Takasagoyukiko Shrine grounds, you can clearly see Takakura No. 4 Mound, and further north beyond it lies Takakura No. 3 Mound.

The presence of these ancient burial mounds suggests this was a prosperous land long before the shrine’s founding, a place of former glory. It’s a shrine that stirs the imagination of those who love ancient burial mounds, history, or shrines and temples—making one wonder if Hideyoshi and his mother truly visited here… I, too, was briefly lost in such imaginings, but when I visited, the grounds were remarkably quiet and serene, a pleasant place that seemed to calm the noisy chatter in my mind.

The Takasagoyukiko Shrine and Takasago Inari Shrine offer a peaceful place to quietly reflect on history. If you haven’t made your New Year’s visit yet, why not pay them a visit? There’s plenty to enjoy.

明けましておめでとうございます。本年も何卒よろしくお願い申し上げます。

実は今日が仕事始めでして、遅くなりましたが新年のご挨拶になりました。本年も皆さまに寄り添ったお店として、私共も精進してまいりますので何卒よろしくお願い申し上げます。

さて、気付けば松の内も過ぎました。賑やかなお正月が終わると寂しさを感じる反面、なぜだかほっとして肩の荷がおりた気持ちがしています。

毎年、気がつけばもう7日になっていて、七草粥の準備なんて忘れていた…ということが続いておりましたが、今年は七草粥の存在を忘れることなく食することができて、なんだか幸先良さそうな気がしています。

七草粥は、江戸時代の武士にとって重要なならわしだったそうですが、それから数百年経った今も受け継がれ、お正月に食べたり飲んだりして疲れた私の胃をいたわってくれました。

七草粥に入れる若菜といえば、「せり、なずな、ごぎょう（おぎょう）、はこべら、ほとけのざ、すずな、すずしろ、春の七草」といった言い回しで知られる、七種類が定番です。地域によって入れる菜も違うようですので、毎年あり合わせの即席七草粥でもよしとしています。

さて、仕事はじめでしたので、今年も近所の上野天満宮へお参りさせていただきました。

名古屋には合格祈願の聖地である三社を巡る「名古屋三大天神参り」なるものがあります。名古屋三大天神とは上野天満宮、桜天満宮、山田天満宮です。ですので、名古屋の受験生は、結構こちらに合格祈願で訪れます。

上野天満宮は、名古屋市千種区ちょうど古美術風光舎があります姫池通をそのまま北上しまして、日泰寺を越えた住宅街の中にあります。けっこうすぐ近くです。

およそ千年前の平安時代中期に陰陽氏安倍晴明の一族がこの地に住んだ折、菅原道真公を慕ってその御神霊をお祭りしたのがこの上野天満宮の起源です。学問の神様にあやかり、境内には「合格祈願」の絵馬が所狭しと奉納されておりますよ。

そして上野天満宮と言えば、境内のそこかしこに置かれている道真君の愛称の「天神みくじ」。毎年参拝に来ては思うことですが、いつどうやってそこに置いた？と驚くところに道真君がいたりしますが、今年はなんだか少なくなっているような…。毎年増え続けることでしょうから、何年かに一度片付けるのでしょうね。

そうそう、上野天満宮には、晴明殿の前に水占いみくじなるおみくじがあるのですが、なぜかそこも道真君たちでいっぱいに…。

おみくじをを御清水に浮かべると、あなたへのアドバイスの文字が浮かび上がってきます…。ということのようですが、これでは無理ですね。

Happy New Year. We sincerely appreciate your continued support this year.

Today actually marks the start of work for us, so while belated, this serves as our New Year’s greeting. We will strive to be a shop that stays close to all of you this year as well, and we humbly ask for your continued support.

Well, before I knew it, the New Year holidays had passed. While I feel a sense of loneliness after the bustling New Year festivities end, I also feel strangely relieved, like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

Every year, I’d suddenly realize it was already the 7th and forget to prepare the seven-herb rice porridge… but this year, I remembered it and managed to eat it. Somehow, it feels like a good omen for the year ahead.

Seven-herb rice porridge was apparently an important custom for samurai during the Edo period. Centuries later, it’s still passed down, and it gently soothed my stomach, tired from all the eating and drinking over New Year’s.

The seven herbs traditionally added to the porridge are known by the phrase “serri, nazuna, gogyo (ogyo), hakobera, hotokenoza, suzuna, suzushiro – the seven herbs of spring.” The specific herbs used seem to vary by region, so I’m perfectly fine with making a quick, improvised version each year with whatever I have on hand.

Well, since it was the first day back to work, I paid my respects at the nearby Ueno Tenmangu Shrine again this year.

In Nagoya, there’s something called the “Nagoya Three Great Tenjin Shrine Pilgrimage,” where you visit three shrines considered sacred for prayer for exam success. The Nagoya Three Great Tenjin are Ueno Tenmangu, Sakura Tenmangu, and Yamada Tenmangu. So, quite a few Nagoya exam takers visit these for their prayers.

Ueno Tenmangu is located in the residential area just past Nittaiji Temple, heading north along Himeike-dori where the antique shop Fūsōsha stands, in Chikusa Ward, Nagoya City. It’s quite close by.

Its origins date back to the mid-Heian period, roughly a thousand years ago. When the Abe clan, descendants of the onmyōji Abe no Seimei, settled here, they revered Sugawara no Michizane and enshrined his divine spirit, marking the start of Ueno Tenmangū. Drawing on the power of the god of learning, the shrine grounds are densely packed with “prayer for success” ema votive tablets.

And speaking of Ueno Tenmangū, the “Tenjin omikuji” fortune slips—named after Lord Michizane’s affectionate nickname—are placed all over the grounds. Every year when I visit, I’m amazed at where they’ve been placed: “When and how did they put this here?” But this year, there seem to be fewer… Since they keep increasing every year, I suppose they tidy them up every few years.

Oh yes, at Ueno Tenmangū, there’s a water fortune-telling oracle in front of the Seimei Hall. But for some reason, that spot is also packed with Lord Dōjin and his companions…

Apparently, if you float the fortune slip in the sacred water, the characters offering advice to you will rise to the surface… But with it being like this, that’s impossible.

さて、クリスマスが終わり、早いもので、本年も残すところあとわずかとなりました。皆さまにとってどのような一年だったでしょうか。

いろいろあった一年かと思われますが、一旦こうして振り返ることが出来るということは、自分にとっては何よりの一年であった…ということになるのでしょうか。

さて、今年の古美術風光舎はと申しますと、やはりご実家のお片付けや、親御さんから引き継いだ御品などの整理をしたいというお客さまからの買取や問い合わせが大変多くございました。

大切な御品を買取させていただく際、その御品のことや使われていたご家族のことを懐かしくお話される様子や表情は大変印象に残っております。思い出の御品を手放し、寂しく思われるご様子の中には、次のスタートを切っているような表情もお見受けすることができました。

本年も多くのお客様よりご愛顧いただき、古美術風光舎は無事一年を過ごすことが出来ました。これもひとえにお世話になりました皆さまのお陰でございます。感謝申し上げます。

Well, Christmas has come and gone, and before we know it, this year is drawing to a close. What kind of year has it been for you?

It must have been a year filled with various events, but the fact that we can now look back on it like this… perhaps that means it was the best year possible for me.

As for Fūkosha Antiques this year, we received an exceptionally high number of inquiries and purchases from customers wishing to organize items inherited from their parents or to clear out their family homes.

When purchasing cherished items, the expressions and nostalgic stories shared about the objects and the families who used them left a deep impression. Amidst the sadness of parting with these mementos, we also saw glimmers of faces ready to begin a new chapter.

Merry Christmas🎄！

今朝、枕元にプレゼントをみつけたみなさんも、冬休み前でやる気なく学校へ行っている学生さんも、クリスマスマーケットに出かけている若いカップルも、私のようにお仕事をしているどんよりした大人も、様々なクリスマスを過ごしていますでしょうか。

ここ名古屋は少々どんよりした空模様でして、冬空らしいと言えばそうとも言えますが、プレゼント？と思しき袋を持った人やケーキを持った人が楽しそうに行き来し、どんより空もクリスマスらしくみえます。

ところで、クリスマスのプレゼントのお話というと「賢者の贈り物」はご存知ですよね。

貧しいジェイムズ・ディリンガム・ヤング夫妻が、お互いにクリスマスプレゼントを買うお金を工面しようとするお話なのですが、

夫のジムは、祖父から父そして自分へと受け継いだ懐中時計を宝物にしていて、妻のデラは、膝下まで届く美しい髪を持ち、それはまた夫婦の宝物でもありました。

デラは、金の懐中時計に付けるプラチナの鎖を夫へのプレゼントとして買うために、髪の毛を髪をバッサリと切り落と、売ったお金で懐中時計につけるプラチナの鎖を買います。一方、夫のジムはデラが欲しがっていた鼈甲の櫛をプレゼントとして買うために、宝物の懐中時計を質に入れてしまいます。

プレゼントをお互い受け取ると、デラが買ったプ懐中時計は夫の手元にはすでに無く、ジムが買った鼈甲の櫛が留めるはずだった妻の髪もすでに無くなっています。

結局お互いのプレゼントは無駄になってしまうのですが、夫婦は、お互いの「思いやり」をプレゼントとして受け取ったというお話でして、物語の決末は「この一見愚かな行き違いは、最も賢明な行為であった」と、結ばれています。

自分も、先日プレゼントを選んでいたのですが、いつも贈られる方の顔や様子を思い浮かべ、これは気に入ってもらえるかな？これは好きかな？なんていろいろ悩ましい時間でして、傍から見ると苦い顔をした完全に挙動不審なおばちゃん笑。「賢者の贈り物」のように贈る方への大切な気持ちも一緒に届くとよいのですが、贈る方のことをあれやこれや思い浮かべる時間は、贈る人に側も悩ましくも自分はちょっと好きでして、それはそれでいい時間のプレゼントをもらっているような気もします。

というわけで、今日枕元のプレゼントをみつけ大騒ぎしているみなさん、そうだな…サンタさん（？）には、プレゼントをもらったその笑顔をプレゼントを贈りましょう✨。

本日のクリスマスイブ、名古屋はあいにくの雨模様で少し暖かくもあり、クリスマスっぽくないなのですが、街を歩くと個人のお宅や店先がイルミネーションなどで飾られており楽しませてもらっています。

子供のころ、クリスマスイブというとケーキやチキン料理などの他に楽しみと言えば、テレビで放映される外国のクリスマスのアニメでした。

暖炉や煙突がある日本とは全く違う家や街の様子に目が釘付けになりました。みなさまはお気に入りのクリスマス映画や本などはありますか。

私は小学校の図書館に置かれていたレイモンド・ブリックスの「さむがりやのサンタ」の絵本が大好きでした。クリスマスの時期でなくとも読んでいました。レイモンド・ブリックスといえば「スノーマン」や「風が吹くとき」で有名ですが、図書館でこの絵本を見つけてから、なぜかこの寒がりで不機嫌なサンタが登場する、ちょっとシニカルなお話にはまり、大人になってから英語版も購入してしまいました。子どもにも読み聞かせをしたため、クリスマスイブの夜はサンタのために赤ワインを用意するという我が家の恒例行事が生まれ、子供が寝てからサンタの代わりに私が有難くいただいておりました。

日本では見たこともない外国の街並みや文化は刺激的で惹かれてしまいますが、最近では日本の文化が外国の人に新鮮で強烈な印象を与えているようで、昨年のエミー賞では非英語作品にもかかわらず「SHOGUN（将軍）」が監督賞をはじめ１８の賞を獲得しました。そして「将軍」をきっかけにアメリカや他の国で日本の時代劇がブームとなっているようです。以前から熱烈な時代劇ファンは海外にもいたのでしょうが、現在は若者などにもファン層が広まっていて、「将軍」をきっかけに、往年のスター俳優、三船敏郎さんが出演する「羅生門」や「七人の侍」、勝新太郎さんの「座頭市」なども脚光を浴び、日本独特の撮影手法や俳優の演技に釘付けになっているのだとか。

映画の生まれた国、フランスでも日本の時代劇の人気が高まり、日本では注目されていない作品を掘り起こし上映するというフランスらしい企画も行われているそうで、若い監督や俳優にはチャンスかもしれませんね。

しかし時代劇といえばセットなどにかなりの資金が必要です。撮影では当時を再現するために衣装から小道具まで細部にこだわった演出がされてきました。髪形なども今とは全く違うので、リアリティを持たせるためにはかなりの技術が求められます。草履ひとつにしても、年齢や階級などにより変えるというこだわりは日本ならではでしょう。

時代劇の魅力のひとつとして、現代劇では声高に訴えることができないテーマを時代劇を通して間接的に表現できることが挙げられます。ルールや縛りが多いようで実は自由度が高いのだそうです。日本では時代劇映画やドラマの衰退が著しいといわれていますが、まさか外国で日本独自の世界観を表現する時代劇が評価される日が来るなんて、と不思議な感覚になります。日本人の感性のまま表現しても、そのまま魅力が伝わるとというのは嬉しいことです。普遍的な感性というものが人にはあるのかもしれませんね。

Today, on Christmas Eve, Nagoya is unfortunately rainy and a bit warm, not feeling very Christmassy at all. But walking through the city, I’m enjoying seeing private homes and storefronts decorated with illuminations and such.

When I was a child, besides cake and chicken dishes, I looked forward to foreign Christmas cartoons broadcast on TV on Christmas Eve.

I was fascinated by the houses and towns that were completely different from Japan, with fireplaces and chimneys. Do you have any favorite Christmas movies or books?

I loved Raymond Briggs’ picture book “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas,” which was in my elementary school library. I read it even when it wasn’t Christmas time. Raymond Briggs is famous for “The Snowman” and “When the Wind Blows,” but after finding this book at the library, I somehow became hooked on this slightly cynical picture book featuring a cold-sensitive and grumpy Santa, and even bought the English version as an adult. I read it to my children, and it became a tradition in our house to prepare red wine for Santa on Christmas Eve, which I gratefully drank instead of Santa.

Foreign cities and cultures I’ve never seen are exciting and appealing, but these days, Japanese culture seems to be making a fresh and strong impression on foreigners. At last year’s Emmy Awards, despite being a non-English language work, “SHOGUN” won 18 awards, including Best Director. It seems that “SHOGUN” has sparked a boom in Japanese period dramas in the United States and other countries. While passionate fans of period dramas likely existed overseas before, the fan base has now expanded to include younger audiences. Following “Shogun,” classic films like ‘Rashomon’ and “Seven Samurai,” starring the legendary actor Toshiro Mifune, and Katsu Shintaro’s “Zatoichi” series are also gaining attention. People are reportedly captivated by Japan’s unique cinematography and the actors’ performances.

Even in France, the birthplace of cinema, Japanese period dramas are gaining popularity. There are French-style projects underway to unearth and screen works that haven’t received much attention in Japan, which could be a chance for young directors and actors.

However, period dramas require significant funding for sets and production. Filming involves meticulous attention to detail, from costumes to props, to authentically recreate the era. Hairstyles, too, differ entirely from today, demanding considerable skill to achieve realism. Even something like a pair of straw sandals might be changed based on age or social class – a level of detail perhaps unique to Japan.

One appeal of period dramas is their ability to indirectly express themes that modern dramas cannot address so directly. They seem constrained by rules yet actually offer considerable creative freedom. While Japanese period films and dramas are said to be in sharp decline domestically, it feels strange to think that period dramas expressing Japan’s unique worldview might one day be appreciated abroad. It’s heartening that their charm can resonate even when expressed purely through Japanese sensibilities. Perhaps there is such a thing as universal sensibility.

みなさま、もう大掃除には取り掛かっていらっしゃいますか？

普段から綺麗にしているから必要ない。できれば暖かい時期にしたい。などなど色々とご意見はあることでしょう。わざわざ年末の忙しい時期に、寒さに耐えながら掃除をするのは合理的ではないようにも思えます。

ただ年末の掃除は普段の掃除とは違い１年の穢れを払い清め、新しい年神様を迎え入れるという意味合いもあるため、全くやらないというのは私としては気が引けてしまいます。

平安時代には宮中で年末に煤払いが行われ、江戸時代になると庶民の間でも１２月１３日の「正月事始め」から年末まで障子の張り替えなどの大掛かりな掃除をする習慣が浸透していたといいます。

しかし現在は忙しくてそんなに何日もかけて掃除をする時間はないという方もいることでしょう。様々な新しい掃除道具や洗剤を目にするたび、昔のようには動けないなぁと憂鬱になっていたところ、大掃除の心得なるお話が耳に入ってきました。

年末の大掃除は家中を完璧にピカピカにするのが目的ではなく、無心で掃除をしながら１年を振り返り、自分と向き合う時間なのだと。掃除で少し片付いた余白のスペースと、余裕のある落ち着いた心に年神様は来てくださるのだそうです。

掃除の手を抜く言い訳のようにも聞こえますが、自分に都合の良いお話はすぐに取り入れる性分ですので、１年間頑張った自分を褒めながら、落ち着いた心持ちを意識し、出来る範囲で丁寧に掃除したいと思います。

Everyone, have you started your year-end cleaning yet? Some might say it’s unnecessary since they keep things tidy year-round, or prefer to do it during warmer months. It does seem rather unreasonable to endure the cold and clean specifically during the busy year-end period.

However, year-end cleaning differs from regular cleaning. It carries a religious significance: purifying the year’s impurities and welcoming the New Year deity. Personally, I feel hesitant about skipping it entirely.

During the Heian period, the imperial court performed year-end soot-cleaning rituals. By the Edo period, the custom had spread among commoners: starting on December 13th, the “beginning of New Year preparations,” they would undertake major cleaning tasks like replacing shoji paper until year’s end.

But nowadays, many are too busy to spend several days cleaning. I, too, was feeling down about not being able to move as nimbly as I once did. Then I heard about the true spirit of year-end cleaning.

The purpose of year-end cleaning isn’t to make the entire house spotless. It’s a time to reflect on the past year and confront oneself while cleaning mindfully. It’s said that the Year God visits the slightly tidier, more spacious areas and the calm, composed heart that comes with a little breathing room.

It might sound like an excuse to cut corners, but I’m the type to readily embrace stories that suit me. So, I plan to clean only what I can manage, praising myself for a year of hard work and maintaining a calm state of mind.
