先日も買取させていただきましたが、遺品整理や生前整理や実家の片付けなどで刀剣がでてきてどうしたらいいですか？買取してもらえるか？などのご相談をよくお受けします。刀剣は、登録証など少々扱いに注意が必要だったり、その保存やその価値など扱いが難しいのでは？とのご相談も。

本日は、刀剣類を売却する際どのような点に注意点や、高く買取ってもらうためのポイントなどをあげてみましたので是非ご一読ください。

1．登録証はありますか？

まず、刀剣の売買には「鉄砲刀剣類登録証」が不可欠です。これは、銃刀法に基づき、所持を許可された証でして、この登録証がない刀剣の売買は法律違反となります。登録証は、刀の所有者情報や刀の形状、銘などが記載された重要な書類でして、売却前には登録証の有無、記載内容の正確性を必ず確認してください。

よく、親族様がその存在すら知らずに古い刀剣がでてきたりすることが多いのですが、登録証の紛失や破損した場合は、速やかに警察署への届け出と教育委員会への再発行手続きが必要となります。手続きの際は、刀剣と身分証明書、印鑑が必要になり、手続きの流れなどは管轄の警察署や教育委員会に確認をしてください。

また、登録証の有無、売買手続き、所有権の移転など、法律に違反しないよう注意が必要です。刀剣の売買には銃刀法などの法律に関する知識が不可欠ですし、違法な売買に関わると罰則が科せられる可能性がありますので、専門業者に相談することをおすすめいたします。

なお、手続きには一定の費用と時間がかかりますので、売却を検討する際には余裕を持って手続きを行ってください。

2、刀剣の状態とその価値は？

刀剣そのものの状態は査定額に大きく影響します。錆び、欠け、汚れなどがあると価値が大きく下がる可能性があります。とはいえ素人による洗浄はかえって状態を悪化させる可能性があるため、絶対に避けましょう。また、保管状態にも注意が必要ですので、湿気や直射日光を避け、専用の保管ケースなどで保管することが大切です。

査定前に状態を良くするためにできることは、乾いた布で優しく拭く程度でじゅうぶんです。

3．刀剣の付属品にも価値があります。

刀剣には刀身以外にも様々な付属品があります。刀装具と呼ばれるのですが、鍔（つば）、柄（つか）、はばき、目貫（めぬき）、笄（こうがい）、小柄（こづか）、縁頭（ふちがしら）、柄巻（つかまき）など。これらの刀装具は刀の価値を左右する重要な要素であり全て揃っている方が高額査定につながりますが、単品でも価値はあり売却は可能です。

また、刀を収納する箱や鞘なども、状態が良いほど査定額が高くつきますので、付属品の状態も事前に確認し、可能な限り綺麗に保管しておいてください。とはいえ、付属品が不足している場合は査定額に影響する可能性がありますので不安な点等はお気軽にご相談ください。

4．早期売却も検討に

It is common for relatives to discover old swords without even knowing the certificate existed. 本日文化の日は晴れの特異日の一つとされています。朝の雨空から一転、清々しい晴れ間が広がり、久しぶりに虹も見ることができました。本日は日本各地で美術館や展覧会の観覧料が無料になるところが多いとのこと。足を運ばれた方はいらっしゃるでしょうか。

文化の日はもともと明治天皇の誕生日で、大正時代には「明治節」と呼ばるようになり、戦後「自由と平和を愛し、文化をすすめる日」として「文化の日」と定められました。

文化の日が誕生日という友人がいて、誕生日が毎年休日だなんてラッキーだし知的な感じ。などと羨ましく思っておりましたが、今朝のニュースで「文化勲章」などの表彰者の名前が発表されるのを観ながら、ところで「文化」って何？と今さらながら疑問が湧いてきました。思えば「文化」が付く言葉は膨大にあります。日本文化、文化財、文化的生活、文化人、文化祭、オタク文化…等々。そういえば一昔前、俳優の石田純一さんの発言が誇大解釈されニュースのタイトルにもなった「文化」もありましたね。

「文化」はもともとは中国の古典文学に由来し、「文治教化」という言葉の中で、文＝学問や礼儀、化＝教え導くことを意味し、刑罰や武力ではなく、学問や教育によって人々を導くことを表しています。　日本では平安時代の貴族社会において文学や芸術の発展とともに「文化」という言葉が広まったとされています。

明治時代には少し意味合いが変化し、西洋の技術や思想を取り入れる「文明開化」を「文化」として捉える時期があり、さらに戦後、英語のculture=カルチャーを「文化」と翻訳したことから更に意味は広がっていき、文化の意味の定義が複雑になっているのだとか。

現在の文化の用いられ方としては大まかに２通りあり、「文化人」などに用いられるように、豊かなもの、知的水準の高いものという「知性」「教養」「芸術」などを意味するもの。もうひとつは「日本文化」などに用いられるように集団により共有、伝達され、歴史的に形成された「言語」「道徳」などの生活様式を意味するものとされています。

話は変わりますが、昨日のアメリカのワールドシリーズの最終戦は盛り上がりましたね。日本人選手の活躍に感動し楽しませてもらいました。優勝したドジャースの祝賀会でインタビューを受けていた選手が「自分が目立つのではなくチームのために貢献しようという文化（culture)がチームに根付いていることが勝因のひとつです」と話していました。この文化には２年前に入団した大谷翔平選手の影響が大きいとのこと。味方への配慮だけでなく、敵対心をむき出しにする人をも理解し受け入れようとする姿は文化の垣根を越えて人の心を揺さぶる力があるようです。同じ日本人として誇らしく、学ぶところが多いです。今ではドジャースの選手の名前をほとんど言えてしまう自分が大谷選手に一番影響されているのかもしれませんが。

It seems many museums and exhibitions across Japan are offering free admission today. Did any of you happen to visit?

Culture Day was originally Emperor Meiji’s birthday. During the Taisho era, it became known as “Meiji Festival.” After the war, it was designated as “Culture Day” to be a day “cherishing freedom and peace, and promoting culture.”

I have a friend whose birthday falls on Culture Day. I used to envy them, thinking how lucky they were to have their birthday on a holiday every year, and how intellectual it sounded. But watching this morning’s news announcing the recipients of the Order of Culture and other awards, I suddenly wondered, “What exactly is ‘culture’?” Looking back, there are countless words containing “culture”: Japanese culture, cultural properties, cultural life, cultural figures, cultural festivals, otaku culture… and so on. Come to think of it, there was also that “culture” from a while back when actor Junichi Ishida’s remarks were blown out of proportion and made headlines.

The term “culture” originally comes from classical Chinese literature. Within the phrase “wen zhi jiao hua” (文治教化), ‘wen’ means learning or etiquette, and “hua” means to teach and guide. During the Dodgers’ victory celebration, one player interviewed mentioned, “One reason for our win is the culture rooted in our team – the mindset of contributing for the team rather than seeking personal glory.” It seems Shohei Ohtani, who joined the team two years ago, has had a significant influence on fostering this culture. His attitude—not only considering teammates but also seeking to understand and accept even those who show open hostility—seems to have the power to move people across cultural barriers. As a fellow Japanese person, I feel proud and have much to learn. I might be the one most influenced by Ohtani, as I can now name almost all the Dodgers players.

本日、お客様より蓄音機とレコードを買取させていただきました。ご実家のご両親様が大切にされておりました御品だったということで、たくさんの思い出話を聞かせていただきました。やはり大切にしてくださる方の手に渡ればということで、弊店までわざわざお持込くださりました。誠にありがとうございました。

ところで蓄音機、まだ使えるようでしたので試しにレコードをセットして鳴らしてみました。詳しい鳴らし方がわからなかったので流れてくる音がちょっと不思議な音になりましたが笑、しっかり歌が流れてきます、面白い。かつての持ち主様もこうやって楽しんでおられたのでしょうね、それがとても伝わってきます。

自分も含め、現在はCDやサブスクなどのWi-Fiから音楽を楽しんでいる方が大半でしょうか。音楽を作られる方のクオリティも素晴らしいのはもとより、音源を発するツールも臨場感や再現度など今耳にする音全てが素晴らしいのではありますが、さっき聞いた蓄音機からの音楽はそれらと全くは別のものと捉えた方がよさそうです。

演奏家や歌手の音と魂が1本のマイクで録音され、一度も電気に変換されることなくレコードの溝に刻まれ、その溝から電気を介することなく直接音になり、蓄音機のスピーカーから再生されます。くぐもったそしてプツプツとしたその針のから聞こえる音楽は、たまに回転が遅くなって変な音になったり。現代のオーディオからみればその音は粗悪で、昔の音の悪い電話機のようですね。

もちろん音量調整もないので、ゼンマイ仕掛けのこの蓄音機音はかなり大きい。そのせいでしょうか、弾いた人や歌った人の音や緊張感や気持ちが一度も電気に変換されることなく、レコードの溝に閉じ込められたような音となってとても伝わってきます。粗悪なだけどその臨場感が、逆に目の前に鮮明に浮き上がってくるのですから不思議ですね。

どんな音がいい音なんだろう？なんて想像だにしていない演奏家や周りの人々の緊張感やリアルが閉じ込られた音に魂を揺さぶられるのですから…まいりましたね。

Today, we purchased a phonograph and records from a customer. We were told these items were cherished by the customer’s parents at their family home, and we heard many fond memories about them. The customer specifically brought them to our shop, believing they should go to someone who would truly treasure them. We sincerely thank you.

Incidentally, since the phonograph still seemed functional, I tried setting a record to play it. I wasn’t sure of the exact method, so the sound that came out was a bit peculiar, but the song played clearly—it was fascinating. I imagine the previous owner enjoyed it this way too; you could really feel that connection.

Nowadays, most people, myself included, enjoy music via CDs, streaming services, or Wi-Fi. While the quality of music creators is outstanding, and the tools producing sound offer incredible realism and fidelity—every sound we hear today is superb—the music I just heard from that phonograph seems like something entirely different.

The performer’s voice and soul were captured by a single microphone, carved directly into the record’s grooves without ever being converted to electricity, and then played back as sound directly from those grooves, without any electrical mediation, through the phonograph’s speaker. The muffled, crackling music from that needle occasionally slowed down, producing strange sounds. Compared to modern audio, that sound is crude, like an old telephone with poor reception.

Of course, there’s no volume control, so the sound from this spring-wound phonograph is quite loud. Perhaps because of this, the performer’s sound, tension, and emotion—never converted to electricity—are captured in the record’s grooves, conveying everything vividly. It’s strange how that poor quality, that very lack of refinement, paradoxically makes the scene spring vividly to life before your eyes.

What even is a “good sound”? I’m utterly moved by this sound, which captures the tension and raw reality of performers and those around them—people who never imagined such a thing… I’m truly blown away.

本日は覚王山秋祭が開催されていますので、駅周辺も賑わっておりました。普段なら入るのに勇気が必要で、素通りしていたお店の前にもブースがあり、お店の様子を気軽にのぞくことができそうです。

食べ物ブースのお店の外には椅子なども用意され、お祭りモード全開です。今年は【文化のみち　揚輝荘】も初出店されており、缶バッチ作りなどお子様が喜ぶ体験ができるようですよ。

ここ最近のお祭りの日は、お天気が悪いことが多かったので、久しぶりの今日の晴天は絶好のお出かけ日和ですね。ゆっくり見たいところですが、お仕事がありますので後ろ髪を引かれながら、楽しい気分だけいただいてきました。

さて、今日から三連休ですね。季節を表す七十二候では「楓蔦黄（もみじつたきばむ）」を迎え、いよいよ紅葉シーズンに入りました。紅葉といえば秋というイメージですが、人にとっては目を楽しませてくれるものでも、木々たちにとっては、色づき、葉を落とすのは、冬も生き残るための大事な手段だからです。

秋に美しく紅葉する木は「落葉樹」と呼ばれています。

木々は、春から夏にかけては、たっぷり日差しを浴びることができるので、光合成を盛んに行い、成長するために必要な栄養をたくさん作ります。

ところが、秋になって日差しが弱くなると、光合成によって作られるエネルギーは激減します。そのため葉を緑色に維持するエネルギーより、光合成によって得られるエネルギーの方が少ないという状態になってしまうのです。

そこで落葉樹は、余分なエネルギーをカットしようと葉に栄養や水分を送ることをやめます。その代わり、枝や幹にエネルギーを蓄え、寒い冬を乗り越える準備を始めるというわけです。紅葉は立冬を迎えると一気に進んでいきますが、今はまだほんの始まりの時期ということになりますね。

夏には緑一色だった山がだんだん色づいてくると、黄、橙、辛子色、赤、紫、その複雑さはしばしば錦の織物に例えられますが、日本はイロハモミジやヤマモミジをはじめとするカエデの種類が多いだけでなく、紅葉、黄葉する植物がたくさんあるためです。

真っ赤に紅葉することが名前の由来になったニシキギ（錦木）、ヤマボウシ（山法師）、コナラ、ケヤキ、ハゼノキなどのウルシの仲間や、ナツハゼ、ドウダンツツジ（灯台躑躅）などのツツジの仲間、黄葉が美しいのはクロモジなどのクスノキの仲間、カツラやダンコウバイ、クヌギ、カラマツ、イチョウなど数えきれないほどあります。

紅葉は日中の天気がよく、夜の冷気が増すほど鮮やかになると言われますが、この寒暖の差が少ない年は鮮やかな紅葉が見られないまま終わってしまうこともあります。やはりメリハリがないと、なんでもぼんやりしてしまうものなのかもしれません。さて、今年はどうなるでしょうか。

Food booths had chairs and tables set up outside, fully embracing the festival spirit. This year, the [Bunkano Michi Yōkizō] is participating for the first time, offering experiences like making can badges that children will enjoy.

Weather has often been bad on recent festival days, so today’s long-awaited sunshine makes it perfect for going out. I’d love to take my time looking around, but work calls, so I left with a heavy heart, taking only the joyful mood with me.

Well, today marks the start of a three-day weekend. According to the seasonal divisions of the 72 micro-seasons, we’ve reached “Maple Vines Turn Yellow,” signaling the full onset of autumn foliage season. While autumn leaves evoke images of fall, what delights our eyes is actually a vital survival strategy for trees: changing color and shedding leaves to endure winter.

Trees that turn beautifully red in autumn are called “deciduous trees.”

From spring through summer, trees soak up plenty of sunlight, actively performing photosynthesis and producing abundant nutrients needed for growth.

However, when autumn arrives and sunlight weakens, the energy produced through photosynthesis drastically decreases. This creates a situation where the energy required to maintain the leaves’ green color exceeds the energy gained from photosynthesis.

The Japanese spindle tree (Nishiki-gi), whose name originates from its vivid red autumn color, mountain dogwood (yamabōshi), Japanese oak (konara), zelkova (keyaki), and sumac (hazeno-ki) from the sumac family; summer haze (natsuhaze) and Japanese andromeda (dōdantutsuji) from the azalea family; beautiful yellow foliage from camphor trees (kuro-moji) and other laurel family trees; katsura, Japanese spindle tree (dankōbai), Japanese oak (kunugi), larch (karamatsu), ginkgo (ichō), and countless others.

It’s said autumn colors become more vivid when daytime weather is fine and nighttime chill intensifies. Yet in years with little temperature variation, the vibrant foliage may fade away unseen. Perhaps without contrast, everything just becomes blurred. Well, what will this year bring?

ハッピーハロウィン！

今日はこの古美術風光舎界隈も小さな仮装プレイヤーたちが楽しく界隈を練り歩ており、つい眺めてしまいました。楽しそうですね。

そういえば、昨年のハロウィンの日にSJのハロウィンイベントに行ったのですが。物見遊山的に行ったわけですが、大人ですので、ここは本気のゾンビに合わねば…と、本気ゾンビの出現するエリアへ突入してきました。宣伝などで本物の怖さがよくわからなかったのですが、暗闇から突然出現する演出やゾンビそのもののクオリティも高くて、思ったよりも怖かったですね。怖かったとはいえ、周りの方とワ―キャー言いながら怖がるのも楽しかったですので、結論、イベントは何事も突入しないと本当の面白さは分からないです。

というわけで、小さな仮装プレイヤーたち、今日一日楽しんでくださいね。

１．どんなものが買取してもらえるのか？

茶道具の弊店では茶道具全般あらゆる種類のものを買取しております。

お茶碗・釜（茶釜）・お香・香合・風炉先屏風・柄杓・盆・水指・水注薬缶・茶筅・茶巾筒・棗・茶杓・蓋置・建水・台子・掛物・花入れなど、他にも季節によってお道具は様々でありますが、特に買取の多いお道具の買取の特徴を上げてみました。

【茶碗（ちゃわん）】ここでいう茶碗とは、茶道でお茶をいただくときに使用される器のことですが、主に和物（日本で作られた茶碗）と唐物（中国や朝鮮の高羅などで作られた茶碗）に分けられます。これは薄茶用と濃茶用に分かれており、濃茶には文様のないものを、薄茶にはあるものが使用されるのが特徴です。

【茶杓（ちゃしゃく）】茶杓とは、抹茶を茶入や棗からすくって茶碗に移すために作られた道具です。柄の長いスプーンのような形状をしています。主に竹で作られた茶杓が多いですが、松や桜、象牙などを使っているものもあるようです。茶杓には銘がつけられ茶策を納める竹筒にその銘を墨書することもあります。

【棗（なつめ）】棗とは抹茶を入れるための道具です。棗の実に形状が似ているところからその名前が付けられました。古くは黒い漆器のものが使われていましたが、時代の流れで現在では多くのデザインの棗が流通しています。
棗に入れる抹茶は決められており、鮮やかな青緑色をした薄茶を入れていました。濃茶用の抹茶は、茶入という道具に入れます。

【柄杓（ひしゃく）】柄杓とは、窯や水差しから水を汲むための道具で、竹で作られています。季節や用途によって柄杓の種類が違ってきます。

【鉄瓶】鉄瓶とは、お茶を立てるときに使用するお湯を沸かすための道具です。鉄瓶には、多くの種類があります。南部鉄器・京鉄瓶・龍文堂の鉄瓶などさまざまで、種類によって中古市場での価値も異なります。

【水差し】水差しは、茶席で使う水を入れておくための道具です。水差しに入っている水を使って、お茶の温度調整や茶碗をすすぎます。水差しに使われている素材はさまざまあり、陶器や金属、ガラスが代表的です。
蓋にも違いがあり、同じ焼物で作られたものは共蓋と呼び、別の素材のものは塗蓋といいます。

【茶釜】茶釜は、お湯を沸かすための道具です。鉄瓶と似た用途として使われています。ほとんどが鉄でできており、大きさや形が茶釜によって異なるのが特徴です。管理の状態で錆がついたものでも買取可能ですのでご安心ください。

茶道具には、ほかにもさまざまな種類がありますが、古美術風光舎ではあらゆる茶道具も買取しておりますので、まずはご相談くださいませ。

2．価値の高い茶道具の特徴

では、どんなお道具が価値が高いのか気になってきますが、その主な特徴は4つあります。

・保存状態が良い

やはり、保存状態が良いものは高く売れる傾向にあります。茶道具にはワレモノが多いため、キズやヒビが入っていると価値が下がってしまいます。侘び寂びの世界では金継ぎをして修復しますが、中古市場の視点から見るとあまりよい対処法とはいえません。修復もダメージと捉えられるため価値が下がってしまいますので、売却する予定がある場合は慎重に取り扱ってキズやヒビが入らないようにお気を付けください。

・有名作家の作品

有名作家の作品も高く買取してもらえます。自分の持っている茶道具が有名作家のものかどうかが気になる場合は、説明書き、茶道具に付いているサインなどを確認してみてください。自分で判断がつかない場合には、買取専門店で鑑定してもらえます。

・素材や関連人物などで希少性を持つ

素材や関連人物などの影響で、茶道具の価値が上がることもあります。例えば、金や銀などの希少性の高い素材が使われていると素材そのものの価値が付加されます。同様に装飾がされているものも高く買い取ってもらえます。

また、有名な武将が持っていた茶道具や有名コレクターの遺品など、所有していた人物によっても希少性が付き、買取価格が高くなります。茶道具の価値を調べたいときには、素材や関連人物も調べてみてください。

・家元の書付がある

茶道具はそれぞれの流派を持った家元のお墨付きの印である書付があるかどうかでも価値の高さが変わります。とくに有名な家元は、表千家と裏千家です。家元によって使う道具が異なり、書付があると高額買取が期待できますので、書付を確認したいときは蓋の内側を調べてみてください。（棗などの漆作品は作品自体に書付がされています。）

3．茶道具をより高価で買取してもらうポイント

茶道具など売却をされているのでしたら工夫をするだけで買取価格に大きな差が出るポイントがいくつかあります。少しでも高く売却したい場合は参考になさってみてください。

・鑑定前に軽く手入れをしておく

茶道具は、鑑定前に軽くお手入れをしておくのがおすすめです。きれいな状態にしておくことで、査定価格も上がる可能性があります。ただし、取り扱いには注意することが大切です。お道具はできるだけ水洗いは避け、きれいな布で拭く程度にとどめておきましょう。茶碗などは破損など取扱いにお気を付けください。

・箱や付属品が揃っている

箱や付属品が揃った状態で売却しましょう。茶道具のほとんどは木箱に収められています。木箱はただの箱ではなく、作家の名や制作年などが入っている場合がございますので判別するときに役立ちますので、購入した際には、箱や付属品は使わなくても保存しておくのが望ましいです。さらに査定でも有利に働くため、箱や付属品は必ず一緒に売却しましょう。

ですが、木箱などを廃棄してしまった、失くしてしまったなどの場合でも買取は可能ですので、安心してご相談ください。

・セットの作品であれば揃えて鑑定に出す

セットの商品は揃えて売却するのがおすすめです。茶道具のみならず一般的なお皿なども枚数が揃っていないと、査定金額が下がってしまいますので、茶道具も一式で売られていることも多いです。一見査定に関係なさそうな布や紐などもセットに含まれますので、セットには何が含まれているのか確認しながらすべて揃えた上で売却しましょう。

故人やご先祖の方の持ち物ですと、片付けをしている親族がお道具のことはわからないという方ももちろんおられます。価値のある御品ということもありますので、まずはその価値を確認してみてはいかがでしょうか。

秋の夜長、どんなことをしてすごされていますか？

昨日は「読書の日」。読書習慣ならぬ読書週間が始まりました。世の中に活字は溢れているように思いますが、なんと、読書をしない小中高生は半数に上り、約10年で1.5倍に増えているといいます。

学校では、「朝ドク」に取り組んで本を読むことを習慣化させたり、読書ノートを配布してたくさん読んだ生徒を表彰したり、教室や廊下に書架をつくって本や洋書を置いたりして本に興味を持つ工夫に取り組んでいるところが多くあります。また、家庭でも、読み聞かせをしたり、家族で読書時間を設定したりしているという話はよく聞きます。

ですが、子どもがまだ小さいうちは一緒に習慣化できても、学年が上がるにつれ読書をしなくなる割合は高くなり、一方、スマホの使用時間が学年が上がるごとに増えているようです。一概に読書が良くてスマホが悪いとは言えませんが、読書でまとまった文章を読んだり、著者の意図をしっかり読みとったりすることの習慣化は大切なことなのでは思います。

そういえば、小６でメガネ女子になると確定したとき、眼科の先生が、
「よく本読んでるんだね。きっと本の読み過ぎだね！」
と、笑いながら言ってくれたこともありました。
けれど、私が自覚していた視力低下の原因は、家でハマってしまったスーパーマリオだったか、顔にボールが当たったことが原因で、決して読書好きではなかったという残念な話…。

ちなみに今年のキャッチフレーズ「こころとあたまの、深呼吸。」が刺さりすぎて、とりあえず深呼吸を何度もしています。

On these long autumn nights, how do you spend your time?

Yesterday was “Reading Day.” It marked the start of Reading Week, not just a reading habit. While it seems the world is overflowing with printed words, astonishingly, half of elementary, junior high, and high school students don’t read books. This number has increased by 1.5 times in about 10 years.

Many schools are making efforts to spark interest in books. They implement initiatives like “Morning Reading” to make reading a habit, distribute reading logs to recognize students who read extensively, and install bookshelves in classrooms and hallways stocked with books and foreign titles. At home, too, we often hear about parents reading aloud to their children or setting aside family reading time.

However, while parents can help establish reading habits when children are young, the percentage of children who stop reading increases as they advance through school grades. Conversely, smartphone usage time seems to rise with each grade level. While it’s not accurate to say reading is inherently good and smartphones inherently bad, I believe cultivating the habit of reading substantial texts and carefully discerning the author’s intent is important.

Come to think of it, when I got my glasses in sixth grade, the eye doctor laughed and said,
“You must read a lot of books. It’s definitely from reading too much!”
But the truth is, I blame my declining eyesight on getting hooked on Super Mario at home or getting hit in the face with a ball… not because I loved reading. Sad story…

By the way, this year’s catchphrase, “Take a deep breath for your heart and mind,” resonated so strongly with me that I’ve been taking deep breaths repeatedly just for now.

現在NHKで放送されている朝ドラ「ばけばけ」にハマっております。日本に帰化し、日本の幽霊や民話を元にした「怪談」の著者である小泉八雲（ラフカディオ・ハーン）とその妻、小泉セツの波乱万丈の人生を描いた物語です。前回はセツの最初の夫との涙涙の別れのシーンでしたが、やはり史実を元に作られた朝ドラはある程度ストーリーの予想がつき（オープニングの映像からも明らかですが）、この夫とはいずれ別れるのだな、ラフカディオ・ハーンはいつ登場するのかな、などと考えながら観ることとなります。

小泉八雲の日本文化や日本人への理解の深さは並外ており、万物に神や精霊や宿ると信じる日本人の感覚に多大な影響を受けたとされています。「八雲」という日本名も古事記にある和歌の始祖とされる歌「八雲立つ　出雲八重垣　妻籠みに　八重垣作る　その八重垣を」に由来しているのだとか。妻を守るために垣根を作る幸せな気持ちを表しているそうです。

予告では、いよいよ次週あたりに登場するようで楽しみです。

タイトルの「ばけばけ」とは「怪談」の中に出てくる「雪女」や「ろくろ首」などのいわゆる「お化け」の意味の他に、江戸時代から明治へと世の中が劇的に変化するなか、言葉も上手く通じない二人がいかに「化けて」変わっていくかという意味も込められているといいます。

「ばけばけ」というタイトルだけではなく、週ごとのタイトルも気になっておりました。第一週の「ブシムスメ、ウラメシ」、第二週の「ムコ、モラウ、ムズカシ」などです。明らかに外国の人が話すカタコトの日本語なのですが、このカタカナだけの助詞のない、文法を簡略化した日本語が小泉八雲とセツをつなぐ大切な言語であり、「怪談」などのベストセラー小説が生まれた重要なポイントとなるようです。

初めはお手伝いさんとして働いていた小泉セツがハーンの言葉をなんとか理解しようと書き留めた「単語帳」が残っているようで、靴はシウ、綿はカタン、酒はワエンなどハーンの発する言葉を聞こえた通りにメモしたようです。これらは後に「ヘルン言葉」と呼ばれるようになります。ハーンは名前の綴り「Hearn」から「ヘルン」さんと呼ばれるようになりました。セツが作った単語帳などを元にハーンもカタカナで日本語の文章を書くようになり、二人だけが理解する言葉で気持ちを通わせるようになったのだとか。

意思の疎通だけではなく、このヘルン語は小泉八雲が「怪談」などの物語を書く上で重要な役割を果たしました。小泉八雲がいかに優れた書き手だとしても、日本語が分からなければ日本の民話や幽霊話を知ることはできません。そこでセツが古本屋などで見つけた民話などを八雲に読み聞かせるのですが、八雲は本をそのまま読むことをよしとせず、本の内容を体に浸透させてから、セツの言葉で語るよう求めました。ちょっと荷が重すぎるのでは？とも思いますが、セツは擬音語や擬態語を織り交ぜながら、八雲の「その時どんな気持ちだと思う？」などの突っ込みにも応えながら物語を語ります。セツの語りからインスピレーションを受け、小泉八雲はあの幽玄な世界を描いていきました。これはもう小泉セツさんの作品でもあるのではないでしょうか。

お互いに相手の言語がカタコトだったからこそ一生懸命に耳を傾け、深い思いやりが生まれたのかもしれません。いや深い思いやりが先でしょうか？

「怪談」には雪女、ろくろ首など有名なお話が収められていますが、子供の頃の私にとっては何と言っても「耳なし芳一」が強烈でした。目の見えない芳一に感情移入してしまい、真っ暗なお墓の中で幽霊囲まれているのに、華やかな宮廷で琵琶を奏でていると思っている自分。そして最後には…。

子供用の本で読んだだけですが、強烈な印象だったのか挿絵などもまだ目に浮かびます。

この機会に小泉八雲の文体でもう一度「耳なし芳一」を体験してみたくなりました。

I’m currently hooked on the morning drama “Bakebake” airing on NHK. It depicts the turbulent lives of Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo), who naturalized as a Japanese citizen and authored “Kwaidan” based on Japanese ghost stories and folklore, and his wife, Koizumi Setsu. The previous episode featured Setsu’s tearful farewell to her first husband. As with most morning dramas based on historical facts, the story’s trajectory is somewhat predictable (as the opening sequence clearly hints), so I find myself watching while thinking: “She’ll inevitably part ways with this husband,” or “I wonder when Lafcadio Hearn will appear.”

Koizumi Yakumo’s understanding of Japanese culture and the Japanese people was extraordinary. He is said to have deeply respected the Japanese sensibility that believes gods and spirits dwell in all things. His Japanese name, “Yakumo,” is said to originate from the waka poem “Yakumo tatsu, Izumo yaegaki, tsuma gomini, yaegaki tsukuru, sono yaegaki o” (The clouds gather thickly over Izumo, building a fence to keep my wife safe), considered the origin of waka poetry in the Kojiki. It is said to express the happy feeling of building a fence to protect one’s wife.

The preview suggests he’ll finally appear around next week, which I’m looking forward to.

The title “Bakebake” not only refers to the so-called “ghosts” like the “Yuki-Onna” (Snow Woman) or “Rokurokubi” (Long-Necked Ghost) that appear in ‘kaidan’ (ghost stories), but it also carries the meaning of how two people, unable to communicate well amidst the dramatic societal changes from the Edo to Meiji periods, “transform” and change.

Beyond the main title “Bakebake,” I’ve also been curious about the weekly episode titles like “Bushi Musume, Urameshi” and “Muko, Mora, Muzukashi.” These are clearly broken Japanese spoken by a foreigner. This simplified Japanese—written entirely in katakana, lacking particles, and with simplified grammar—seems to be the crucial language connecting Koizumi Yakumo and Setsu, and a key factor in the birth of best-selling novels like “Kwaidan.”

It seems a “vocabulary notebook” remains, where Koizumi Setsu, initially working as a maid, tried to understand Hearn’s words by writing them down. She noted words as she heard them spoken by Hearn: shoes as “shiu,” cotton as “katan,” sake as “waen,” and so on. These would later be called “Hearn-speak.” Hearn came to be called “Hearn-san,” derived from the spelling of his name. Using Setsu’s vocabulary notebook as a basis, Hearn also began writing Japanese sentences in katakana, and the two communicated their feelings using words only they understood.

Beyond mere communication, this Hearn-speak played a crucial role in Koizumi Yakumo’s writing of stories like “Kwaidan.” No matter how skilled a writer Koizumi Yakumo was, he couldn’t understand Japanese folk tales or ghost stories without knowing the language. So Setsu would read folk tales she found in secondhand bookstores to Yakumo. However, Yakumo didn’t approve of simply reading the books verbatim; he insisted she absorb the content deeply and then retell it in her own words. It seems like a bit too much to ask, doesn’t it? Yet Setsu weaves in onomatopoeia and mimetic words, responding to Koizumi’s probing questions like “How do you think they felt at that moment?” as she narrates. Inspired by Setsu’s storytelling, Koizumi Yakumo painted that ethereal world. It makes you wonder if this isn’t also Setsu Koizumi’s work.

Perhaps it was precisely because each spoke the other’s language haltingly that they listened so intently, fostering such deep compassion. Or was that deep compassion there first?

The Ghost Stories collection includes famous tales like The Snow Woman and The Long-Necked Woman, but for me as a child, nothing was as powerful as “The Earless Hōichi.” I empathized deeply with the blind Hōichi, imagining myself surrounded by ghosts in the pitch-black graveyard, yet believing I was playing the biwa in the splendid palace. And then, at the very end…

Even though I only read it in a children’s book, the impression was so strong that the illustrations still vividly come to mind.

This occasion made me want to experience “The Tale of Hōichi the Earless” again, this time in Lafcadio Hearn’s prose style.

10月も後半に入り、朝晩を中心にやっと秋の気配が濃くなってきました。

この季節といえば、ハロウィンです。街中にオレンジの飾りが溢れてきましたね。

試しに『ハロウィン』と入れて検索かけてみたら、何やらかわいい幽霊たちがいっぱいでてきました 。『ジャック・オ・ランタン』と入れてみると、今度は大量のカボチャが画面を埋め尽くしました。最近の演出はどんどん凝ってきていて、感心しきりなのですが、見るだけで参加した気持ちになって満足しております。

ハロウィンの始まりは、紀元前のケルト民族が行っていた秋の盛大な収穫祭とされています。

ケルト民族では、1年の最終日となる10月31日。ハロウィンの日は、秋の収穫をお祝いする日であるとともに、日本でいう「お盆」のように死後の世界と現世とを隔てている扉が開き、先祖の霊が戻ってくるとも信じられていました。

それと一緒に誘われるようにして、悪霊や悪魔たちもやって来て、畑を荒らしてまわると言われていました。

そんなさまよう魔物や悪霊たちと同じ格好をして、モンスターたちの仲間ですよ、とアピールして厄逃れ、難を逃れるために、生きている人間たちは仮装するようになりました。

こういった古代ケルト人たちの大晦日のお祓い行事がルーツにあると言うことは、知れ渡っているお話かと思います。

そしてこの時に忘れてならないのは、ジャック・オ・ランタン（Jack-o’-Lantern）。
くりぬいたカボチャに明かりを灯してランタンにして飾られている様子は、誰もが思い浮かべるハロウィンの絵だと思います。

ですが、実はこの、ジャック・オ・ランタン、もともとはカブだったってこと、ご存知でしょうか 。

「ジャック・オ・ランタン」のジャックとは、アイルランドの物語に登場する男の名前です。

悪事ばかり働いていたジャックという男が、生前自分の魂を狙った悪魔を騙し、「死んでも、地獄に落とさない」という契約を結びました。その後、ジャックは寿命でこの世を去りますが、生前の行いから天国へ行くことはできず、悪魔との契約のせいで地獄に行くこともできない。行き場を失ったジャックはくり抜いたカブの中に火を灯し、今も彷徨い続けているというお話です。

なぜ今ではカボチャが定着しているのかというと、ハロウィンがアイルランド移民によってアメリカに伝わったとき、アメリカではカブよりカボチャの方が手に入りやすかったという理由がひとつと、カボチャがカブよりもくり抜きやすく、ろうそくを中に入れやすかったという理由もあるようです。

そういえば、「トリック・オア・トリート」はハロウィンの代名詞とも言えるフレーズですが、ある調査によると、ハロウィンの日に一般的なアメリカ人家庭の子供が消費するカロリーは7,000カロリーにも及ぶのだとか。7,000カロリーというと、バナナ66本分だそうです…。

可愛い衣装に身を包み、キャンディを集める子どもたちを想像すると可愛いのですが、そのカロリーはもはや恐怖でしかありません…。

As we enter the latter half of October, the signs of autumn have finally grown stronger, especially in the mornings and evenings.

This season is synonymous with Halloween. Orange decorations have started flooding the streets.

I tried searching for ‘Halloween’ and found all sorts of cute ghosts popping up. When I searched for ‘Jack-o’-lantern,’ this time the screen was filled with tons of pumpkins. The decorations these days are getting more and more elaborate, and I’m truly impressed. Just looking at them makes me feel like I’m participating, and that’s satisfying enough for me.

Halloween’s origins trace back to the grand autumn harvest festivals celebrated by the ancient Celts.

For the Celts, October 31st marked the final day of the year. Halloween was a day to celebrate the autumn harvest, but it was also believed that, much like Japan’s Obon festival, the door separating the afterlife from the living world opened, allowing ancestral spirits to return.

It was also said that evil spirits and demons would be drawn along, coming to ravage the fields.

To ward off misfortune and escape harm, the living began dressing up, mimicking the appearance of these wandering monsters and evil spirits to signal, “We’re one of the monsters!”

It’s widely known that these ancient Celtic New Year’s Eve purification rituals form the roots of Halloween.

And what we mustn’t forget at this time is the Jack-o’-Lantern.

The image of a hollowed-out pumpkin lit up as a lantern is surely the picture of Halloween that comes to everyone’s mind.

But did you know that this Jack-o’-Lantern was originally made from a turnip?

The “Jack” in “Jack-o’-Lantern” is the name of a man who appears in an Irish tale.

A man named Jack, who had done nothing but evil deeds, tricked the devil who sought his soul while he was alive, striking a deal: “Even after death, you won’t send me to hell.” Later, Jack passed away at the end of his life. However, due to his deeds in life, he couldn’t go to heaven, and because of his deal with the devil, he couldn’t go to hell either. Left with nowhere to go, Jack lit a fire inside a hollowed-out turnip and is said to wander the earth to this day.

As for why pumpkins became the norm, one reason is that when Halloween was brought to America by Irish immigrants, pumpkins were easier to find than turnips. Another reason is that pumpkins are easier to hollow out and fit a candle inside than turnips.

Speaking of which, “Trick or Treat” is practically synonymous with Halloween. But did you know? According to one study, the average American child consumes a whopping 7,000 calories on Halloween night. That’s equivalent to eating 66 bananas…

It’s adorable to imagine kids dressed in cute costumes collecting candy, but those calories are nothing short of terrifying.

毎年恒例の覚王山秋祭が今年も開催されます！覚王山では年に３回、春、夏、秋に日泰寺参道にてお祭りが開催されていますが、どの季節もそれぞれに趣向が凝らされています。

日時：１１月１日（土）、２日（日）　雨天決行

１１時～１８時

場所：覚王山日泰寺参道

ステージでは様々ジャンルの音楽や和太鼓、フラダンスやベリーダンスなどのパフォーマンスが行われる予定です。懐かしのゲームコーナー、手作り雑貨やアクセサリーのマーケットなど子供から大人まで楽しめます。

秋祭り限定の屋台が参道に並び、秋限定のグルメやスイーツも堪能できます。美味しいものを片手に秋のそぞろ歩きはいかかでしょうか。

※１０月２５日（土）、２６日（日）には田代小学校の生徒が作成した燈籠の灯が参道を彩ります。

The annual Kakuozan Autumn Festival is back again this year! Kakuozan hosts festivals three times a year—spring, summer, and autumn—along the path to Nittaiji Temple, each season offering its own unique charm.

Date: Saturday, November 1st and Sunday, November 2nd (Rain or shine)

Location: Kakuozan Nittaiji Temple Approach

The stage will feature performances across various genres, including Japanese taiko drums, hula dancing, and belly dancing. Enjoy nostalgic game stalls, a handmade goods and accessories market, and more—this festival offers fun for all ages.

Autumn festival-exclusive food stalls line the approach, offering seasonal gourmet treats and sweets. Why not enjoy a leisurely autumn stroll with something delicious in hand?

※On October 25 (Sat) and 26 (Sun), lanterns crafted by students of Tashiro Elementary School will illuminate the approach.
