たしか先週、「若冲と応挙のコラボの屏風が発見され、中之島美術館にて展示されています。他にもまだ眠っている凄い美術品があるんじゃないか…。」なんて欲を張ったつぶやきをした矢先だったのですが、偶然にもその予言が当たってしまいまして、自分でもびっくりなニュースが目にとまりました。

 

 

 

 

 

先月6月末のニュースだったようなのですが、大阪市平野区の杭全神社にて平安時代の刀匠「国永」の作である可能性が高いとされる貴重な刀剣が発見されたようです。

 

刀匠「国永」は、宮内庁の管理する御物「鶴丸」の作者として知られてるのですが、三条宗近を祖とする三条派に連なる平安時代の山城国（現在の京都府）の刀匠であります。京都・五条に居住したため「五条国永」とも言われていますが、現在国永の作として知られている刀剣は、 御物の鶴丸国永、伊勢神宮御宝物の太刀（重要文化財）などを合わせてたったの５振。この刀が国永だとすると、６振目の国永が発見されたことになります。

 

今回は、国永の他、文化財としての価値が高いとされた2振とあわせて、修復・研磨を進めることとなりましたが、研磨のみでも数百万円の費用がかかることや適切な環境で保全されなければこれらを含む文化財の朽損が懸念されるため、修復および保全環境整備の費用の一部をクラウドファンディングにて募る運びとなったようです。

 

こうなると、発見された経緯の詳細がどうしても気になったので、クラウドファンディングのプロジェクト本文を読んでみましたのですが、発見の際のリアルな状況が伝わります。

 

ある日、禰宜となった藤江寛司さんが、神社境内にある築３００年も土蔵を片づけていたところ、蔵の奥から無造作にまとめられた刀剣が出てきます。もちろん登録証などはありません。神社に収められている刀剣については以前より「戦時中の供出により古い物は残っていない」と聞いていたこともあったので、まさか蔵の隅で埃をかぶった刀剣を見つけたところでそれが重要なものであるとは思いもよらなかったようです。

 

もちろん登録証もないので手続きの煩雑さから処分も頭をよぎったのですが、念のため地域の刀剣に詳しい方に見ていただくことにしたそうです。するとその刀剣が貴重なものである可能性を指摘され、その後改めて刀剣の専門家である原田一敏東京藝術大学名誉教授にご検分いただく機会にめぐまれます。

 

その結果8本のうち1本は、平安時代の刀匠「国永」の作である可能性が極めて高いということがわかったのですから、禰宜の藤江さんが「念のため…」とふっと頭によぎらなければ、錆びた刀剣は間違いなく処分をしていたところでしょうね。

 

いつも思うのですが、こうやって美術品が見つかるタイミングって、きっとひょんなことからもけっこうありますよね。どんな経緯で見つかったのか、いつも気になるところなのですが、え？みたいなタイミングだったりしますよね。禰宜の藤江さんのふっと降りてきた「念のため…」が功を奏して「国永」は見つかったようですが、「国永」の錆びの中からどんな輝きや刃文の景色があらわれるか、機会があるようでしたら見に行きたいですね。

 

先日はまだまだ世にお目見えしていない凄い美術品があるに違いない…なんて変な欲を出してみたのですが、逆に知らず知らずに処分していることも多いじゃないかとも思ったので、ピンとくるその「念のため…」は、ここは欲を出してスルーしない方がいいかもしれませんね。

As I recall, last week a collaborative folding screen by Jakuchu and Okyo was discovered and is now on display at the Nakanoshima Art Museum. I was just about to make a greedy tweet that there must be some other great artworks still lying dormant…. I was just about to make a greedy tweet, when my prediction came true by chance, to my own surprise.

 

It seems that at the end of June last month, a valuable sword, said to have been made by the Heian-period swordsmith Kuninaga, was discovered at Kakezu Shrine in Hirano Ward, Osaka City.

 

Kuninaga is known as the creator of “Tsurumaru,” a sword controlled by the Imperial Household Agency. Kuninaga was a Heian-period swordsmith from Yamashiro Province (present-day Kyoto Prefecture), who was a member of the Sanjo School, which was led by Sanjo Munechika. He is also known as “Gojo Kuninaga” because he lived in Gojo, Kyoto, but there are only five swords known to be made by Kuninaga, including the Gomono no Tsurumaru Kuninaga and the Tachi sword (Important Cultural Property), a treasure of the Ise Jingu Shrine. If this sword is Kuninaga, it would be the sixth Kuninaga to be discovered.

 

However, the restoration and polishing of the two swords, along with Kuninaga and two other swords that are considered to have high value as cultural properties, will cost several million yen for the polishing alone. Therefore, they have decided to raise part of the cost for restoration and preservation through crowdfunding.

 

I was curious about the details of how it was discovered, so I read the text of the crowdfunding project, which gives a realistic picture of the circumstances of the discovery.

 

One day, Mr. Kanji Fujie, who had become a priest, was cleaning out a 300-year-old storehouse on the shrine grounds when he found a random collection of swords in the back of the storehouse. Of course, there was no registration certificate. He had heard that there were no old swords left in the shrine due to wartime offerings, so he had no idea that the swords he found in the dust in the corner of the storehouse were important.

 

Of course, there was no registration certificate, so he thought about disposing of the sword due to the complicated procedures, but he decided to have a local sword expert take a look at it just to be sure. He was then given the opportunity to have the swords inspected again by a sword expert, Professor Emeritus Kazutoshi Harada of the Tokyo University of the Arts.

 

As a result, one of the eight swords was found to be most likely the work of the Heian-period swordsmith Kuninaga, and had it not occurred to Priest Fujie to say, “Just in case…,” the rusted sword would have been disposed of without a doubt.

 

I always think that the timing of finding art works like this must be by chance.

 

 

 

The other day, I was thinking that there must be some amazing artworks that have yet to be shown to the world… I was trying to be greedy, but on the other hand, I also thought that there are many things that we dispose of without knowing it, so I thought, “Just in case…” might be a good idea. I think it would be better not to go through with it.
