以前、名古屋には合格祈願の聖地である三社を巡る「名古屋三大天神参り」なるものがありますとお話をいたしましたが、愛知県外の皆さま、忘れましたよね笑。

復習しますよ、名古屋三大天神。上野天満宮、桜天満宮、山田天満宮です。

名古屋の受験生は、結構こちらに合格祈願で訪れます。

 

本日はその中の一つ、上野天満宮の近くを通ることがあり、寄り道をしてきました。

上野天満宮は、名古屋市千種区ちょうど古美術風光舎があります姫池通をそのまま北上しまして、日泰寺を越えた住宅街の中にあります。けっこうすぐ近くです。

およそ千年前の平安時代中期に陰陽氏安倍晴明の一族がこの地に住んだ折、菅原道真公を慕ってその御神霊をお祭りしたのがこの上野天満宮の起源です。

 

 

初詣も落ち着き、静かな参拝になるかと思いきや、たくさんの人で溢れておりました。それもそのはず、今日は３連休最終日。まもなく共通テストもありますし、愛知県の私立高校の受験日も近づいていますので、こんな快晴ですから皆さんいらっしゃるでしょう。

合格祈願の方々をしり目に、しれっとおみくじも引いてきました。今年は黄色の道真君にして、しっかりおみくじもくくってきましたよ。

しかし、境内のそこかしこに置かれている道真君の愛称の「天神みくじ」。毎年参拝に来ては思うことですが、いつどうやってそこに置いた？と驚くところに道真君がいたりします。

 

 

 

そして、天満宮といえば撫で牛です。本年のご挨拶詣ではもちろんなのですが、どちらかというと今回はこちらの方がメインです。実は年末から痛めたところがあり、撫で牛のご利益にあやかれたらと、受験生たちとは全く違う必死さで撫でてきました。

牛を撫でると賢くなるとか、体の悪いところを撫でると良くなると言われています。上野天満宮にも二つの撫で牛の像がありますので、訪れた際はぜひ撫でてみてください。囲われた牛の方が昔からあるそうで、とってもご利益があるとご近所の方に教えてもらいましたよ。

 

参拝している受験生と思しき皆さんの表情は、それほど緊張感みなぎる感じではありませんでしたが、中学受験、高校受験、大学受験とこの時期は多くの受験生が緊張した日々を送っていることと思います。受験生だけでなく、ご家族の皆さまも子供たちのサポートをしながらも、まずは無事に受験できるよう祈る思いでお過ごしのことでしょう。

いよいよ本番も近づいていますね。受験生の皆さま、これまでの努力の成果を存分に発揮できますように。

We previously mentioned that there is a “Nagoya San-Dai-Tenjin-Mairi,” a tour of three shrines in Nagoya that are sacred places for prayers for success in school, but for those of you outside of Aichi Prefecture, you must have forgotten.

Let me recap, Nagoya’s three major Tenjin shrines. Ueno Tenmangu Shrine, Sakura Tenmangu Shrine, and Yamada Tenmangu Shrine.

Students in Nagoya often visit these shrines to pray for success in entrance exams.

 

Today, I happened to pass by one of them, Ueno Tenmangu Shrine, and made a side trip.

Ueno Tenmangu Shrine is located in Chikusa-ku, Nagoya City, in a residential area just north of Himeike-dori Street, where Fumikosha Antique Art is located, and past Nittaiji Temple. It is quite close.

The origin of Ueno Tenmangu Shrine dates back to about 1,000 years ago in the mid-Heian period, when the family of Abe no Seimei, the Yin-Yang clan, lived in this area and worshipped the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane, a famous Buddhist priest.

 

I thought it would be a quiet visit to the shrine after the New Year’s holidays had settled down, but it was full of people. It is no wonder, as today is the last day of a three-day weekend. The common test will soon be held, and the examination day for private high schools in Aichi Prefecture is approaching, so people will probably be there since the weather is so fine.

I saw many people praying for their success, but I also drew a omikuji (oracle). This year, I chose the yellow color for Michizane-kun and made sure to draw a fortune.

However, there are many “Tenjin-mikuji,” a nickname for Michizane, placed here and there in the precincts of the shrine. Every year when I come to the shrine, I wonder when and how they were placed there. I am always amazed at how and when they put them there.

 

 

And speaking of Tenmangu Shrine, there is a petting bull. Of course, I pay a visit to greet the New Year, but this time, my main focus is on the petting cows. In fact, I have had a sore spot since the end of the year, so I stroked the cow with a desperation that was completely different from those of the students taking the entrance examination, hoping to be blessed by the blessings of the petting cow.

It is said that stroking a cow makes you smarter or that stroking a bad part of your body will make it better. There are two statues of petting cows at Ueno Tenmangu Shrine, so please try to pet them when you visit. I was told by a neighbor that the enclosed cow has been around for a long time and is said to be very beneficial.

 

The expressions on the faces of the students who were visiting the shrine for the entrance examinations did not seem so tense, but many of them must have been nervous during the time of entrance examinations for junior high school, high school, and university. I am sure that not only students but also their families are supporting their children and praying for them to take the examinations safely.

昨年末、たしか「早く年末年始が終わって、1月10日くらいになっておぜんざいとかかべてほっこりしたい…。」などと、やる気のない呟きをしたような気がするのですが。気がついたら昨日は11日、鏡開きでありました。この歳になりますと、「早く」が本当に秒のように過ぎ去ります。

 

ところで昨日の鏡開き、ここ名古屋は年末年始も乾燥した日々が続いたものですから、我が家の玄関先に飾っておりました御鏡餅もみごとなひびが入っており、カビも少なく上出来でありました。

この鏡開きをしたこのお鏡餅でおぜんざいを食べれそうですので、やっと思い描いた「ほっこり」にたどり着けそうです。

 

ところで鏡開きというのは、お正月に飾っていた鏡餅を神棚からおろして、これから1年無病息災に幸せに過ごせるように祈りながら食べる習わし。どうやら年神様の依り代である鏡餅には力が宿っているとされています。ようは、お餅の中に年神様がいらっしゃるようで、しっかりと恩恵をいただくためにも、鏡餅は神棚などに備えて、松の内が終わったあとにおろして、開いて（割って）、年神様をお送りし、そして残さずいただくまでが一連の流れのようです。

 

昨日お餅を開いてみたのですが、それがけっこうな量でして。「残さずいただく」なんて言われますと、これは何度かに分けていただきたいものとして、この年末年始にかけての体重増がやはりしっかり確認できていますので、少々悩ましいところ。

 

ほっこりと過ごしたかったこの時期ですが、そういえば「ならわし」と「現実」とが毎年葛藤しているな…などと、毎年この一連の流れを思い出す1月11日でもありました。これを全部いただくのか…汗。

At the end of last year, I seem to have muttered something like, “I can’t wait for the New Year’s holiday to be over, so that I can enjoy a bowl of ozenzai and a bowl of rice wine on January 10….” I think I mumbled something uninspiring like, “I can’t wait for the New Year’s holidays to be over and I want to be able to relax and enjoy some Zenzai or something on January 10th. I realized that yesterday was the 11th, Kagamibiraki. At my age, “soon” really does fly by like a second.

 

By the way, since we have had many dry days during the year-end and New Year holidays here in Nagoya, the Kagamibiraki mochi displayed at the entrance of our house had beautiful cracks and was very well done, with few molds.

We will be able to eat ozenzai (sweet red bean soup) with this Kagamibiraki rice cake, so we will finally be able to reach the “Hokkori” that we had envisioned.

 

Kagamibiraki, by the way, is the custom of taking down the Kagamimochi from the altar and eating them while praying for a year of good health and happiness. It is believed that the Kagamimochi, which is a vessel for the New Year’s god, contains power. It seems that the New Year God is inside the rice cake, and in order to receive the blessings of the New Year God, the Kagamimochi should be kept on the altar, etc. After the pine season is over, the rice cake should be unloaded, broken open, and the New Year God sent to the altar, and then all of the rice cake should be eaten.

 

Yesterday, I opened the rice cake, and it was quite a lot. I was told to “eat all of it,” but I wanted to divide it into several portions, which was a bit troubling since I have confirmed that my weight had increased over the New Year’s holiday.

 

I wanted to spend this time of the year in a relaxed atmosphere, but I remembered that “tradition” and “reality” conflict every year…and so it was on January 11 when I was reminded of this annual series of events. I wonder if I will have all of this…sweat.

昨日、熱田神宮へ遅ればせながら初詣に行ってまいりました。何度も訪れているのに全く知らなかったのですが、手水舎の横の大楠の木には昔から蛇が住んでいるとの話を聞き、改めて繁々と眺めてまいりました。大楠には蛇にまつわる説明などは書かれていませんが、立て札に「この楠は弘法大師お手植えとも伝えられ、樹齢は千年以上といわれている」と書かれており、それだけで有難い気持ちになります。

蛇が今も住んでいるのかどうか定かではなかったのですが、卵が供え物として置かれていたこともあり遭遇すると縁起がよいと言われています。ご神木の上の方にも祠が置かれているのが見えました。

 

 

 

 

熱田神宮は三種の神器のひとつである草薙の剣が祀られています。草薙の剣には蛇に関する伝説も多いそうで、巳年の本年に蛇が住むという大楠に手を合わせてみてはいかかでしょうか。

 

さて本日１月１１日は鏡開きですね。鏡餅は元旦にお迎えした年神様の居場所であり、その魂が宿る依代とされています。

その辺りは親から教えてもらった記憶がありますが、なぜ鏡開きをするのか…。いつものごとく深く考えもせずお餅をいただいていましたので少し調べてみました。

 

古来日本では、人の魂は元日に更新されるという考え方があり、年神様が宿った鏡餅を開いて頂くことによりその力を体にとり込むという意図があります。なぜ「鏡」がつくのかというと、鏡が三種の神器として伊勢神宮をはじめとする神社に祀られているからだとされています。鏡はこの世とあの世の境界として神事に用いられたり、神話の中で太陽の神様とされる天照大神の御神体として祀られます。昔の鏡は銅鏡で丸い形をしていました。

一説によりますと、餅は八咫鏡（やたかがみ）、橙は八尺瓊勾玉（やさかにのまがたま）、串柿は草薙の剣と鏡餅の飾りは三種の神器を表しているとも言われているそうです。

 

鏡餅は平安時代には既に存在していたようで、「源氏物語」にも記述があります。２段重ねになっているのは、陰と陽、月と太陽を表しているという説もあり、万物は陰と陽の相互作用により成り立つという中国の陰陽思想に基づいているとされています。

そしてもう一つ興味深いお話を見つけました。

 

鏡餅には年神様の魂である「年魂（としだま）」が宿っており、鏡開きでその年魂を家長が家族に分け与え、それを食べることにより一年を無事に過ごせますようにという願いを込めていたのこと。

もうお気づきでしょうが、この「年魂」が年始に配る「お年玉」の起源だそうです。元々は鏡餅を与えていたものが、江戸時代頃からお金に変わっていきました。

ちなみに鏡餅は包丁で切ってはならず、木槌などで割らないといけないとか。なかなか難しそうですよね。

 

スッタフH、例年なら紅白歌合戦を観た後に除夜の鐘を聞きながら（最近はあまり聞こえてきませんね）近所の天満宮を参拝するのが恒例でした。人混みに押されながら参拝することに醍醐味を感じていましたが、今では紅白を最後まで観るのもきつくなり、見終えた達成感と共にすぐに眠りにつきます。

初詣も人混みを避けて１５日までに参拝すればいいかという呑気な心持ちで、昨日の初詣となりました。

午前中は雪が降っていて外出するのを躊躇しましたが、さすがにそろそろ参らなければと思い向かった熱田神宮。いつも清々しい場所ですが、雪のあとは更に澄んだ空気に包まれており、気持ちが引き締まりました。

Yesterday, I paid a belated visit to Atsuta Jingu Shrine for the first time. Although I have been to the shrine many times, I had no idea that snakes have been living in the camphor tree next to the hand-watering basin for a long time, and I looked at the camphor tree again with great interest. There is no explanation about the snake on the camphor tree, but a sign says, “This camphor tree is said to have been planted by Kobo Daishi and is said to be over 1,000 years old,” which made me feel grateful.

I was not sure if snakes still live in the tree, but it is said that it is good luck to encounter one, as eggs were once placed as an offering. A shrine was also placed at the top of the sacred tree.

 

Atsuta Jingu Shrine enshrines the Sword of Kusanagi, one of the three sacred weapons. The sword is said to have many legends about snakes, so why don’t you join hands with the camphor tree where snakes are said to live in this year of the Snake?

 

Today, January 11, is Kagamibiraki. Kagamimochi is the place for the New Year’s god who was welcomed on New Year’s Day, and it is believed to be a yorishiro, a place where the god’s spirit resides.

I remember learning about this from my parents, but why do we have Kagamibiraki? As usual, I had been receiving rice cakes without giving it much thought, so I did a little research.

 

In ancient Japan, there is a belief that a person’s soul is renewed on the first day of the year, and by opening and eating the Kagamimochi, in which the New Year’s god resides, the person intends to take its power into his or her body. The reason why the word “Kagami” is used is because mirrors are enshrined in shrines such as the Ise Jingu Shrine as one of the three sacred treasures. Mirrors are used in Shinto rituals as a boundary between this world and the next, and are also enshrined as the sacred object of Amaterasu, the sun god in mythology. In ancient times, mirrors were bronze and round in shape.

According to one theory, the rice cake represents the Yatagami, the orange the Yasakani no Magatama, and the persimmon the Kusanagi no Tsurugi (sword of Kusanagi), and the decorations of the Kagamimochi represent the three sacred objects.

 

Kagamimochi already existed in the Heian period (794-1185), and is mentioned in “The Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari),” and some say that the two-layered decoration represents yin and yang, the moon and the sun, and is based on Chinese yin-yang philosophy that all things are composed of the interaction of yin and yang.

I also found another interesting story.

 

Kagamimochi contains “Toshidama,” the spirit of the New Year’s god, and at Kagamibiraki, the family head of the family shares the Toshidama with his family, hoping that the family will spend the year safely by eating it.

As you may have already noticed, this “Toshikama” is said to be the origin of the “New Year’s gift” given out at New Year’s. Originally, Kagamimochi (mirror-shaped rice cakes) were given to the family. Originally, Kagamimochi (mirror-shaped rice cakes) were given as New Year’s gifts, but around the Edo period (1603-1867), they were replaced by money.

By the way, Kagamimochi must not be cut with a knife, but must be broken with a mallet or something. It sounds quite difficult, doesn’t it?

 

Usually, after watching the Kohaku Uta Gassen, I would visit the nearby Tenmangu Shrine while listening to the bell tolling the New Year’s bell (you don’t hear it very often these days). I used to feel real pleasure in visiting the shrine while being pushed by the crowds, but now it is hard to watch Kohaku all the way through, and I immediately fall asleep with a sense of accomplishment after watching the show.

I was so optimistic that I would be able to visit the shrine by the 15th to avoid the crowds, that I decided to pay my first visit to the shrine yesterday.

I hesitated to go out because it was snowing in the morning, but I decided it was time to go to Atsuta Jingu Shrine. It is always a refreshing place to visit, but after the snow, the air was even clearer and I felt more relaxed.

昨晩からグッと冷え込み、名古屋でも2年ぶりの積雪となりました。それよりも前の記憶に残る積雪は10年ほど前だった気がしますが、あの時はなかなか大きな雪だるまが作れた記憶があります。

 

 

テレビで「雪が落ちてきました」ということばを耳にしたことがありました。「雨が落ちてきました」と言われるのはしっくりきますが、「雪が落ちてきました」と言われるとちょっと違和感があります。てっきり、屋根に積もった雪が落ちて下を歩いていた人にでも当たったのかと思ってしまいますが、「雪が降り始めた」ということだったようです。

英語でSnowfallという言葉がありますが、直訳すると「雪が落ちてきた」になります。ですが、やはり雨や雪は「降る」のであって「落ちる」のではないというのが日本語では普通の考え方のような気がします。

 

そういえば、「雪が落ちる」を始めて体験したのは、たしかスタッフＴが小学３年生の冬。

祖父母宅の座敷でお茶を飲んでいると、突然ズズズズドドーンと聞いたことのない音が屋根の上から響いてきたのです。

「地震？」と思ったのですが、揺れもなく、音が止むとそれまでと同じ静かな雪の世界が戻っていました。どうやらそれは、屋根から落ちる雪の音だったよう。その後、庭を散策して部屋に戻ろうと縁側に近づくと、あのズズズズドドーンの音が上から降ってきたかと思うと、右の肩を硬く重たく冷たい塊が掠めて地面にドサリと落ちました。

一瞬、何が起きたのか分からなかったのですが、理解したら恐ろしくなりました。下敷きになったら命にかかわることです。今思うと、かなり危険なヒアリハットでした。ともあれ、こうして私は、神様とご先祖様とのご加護により、怪我もなく「落雪デビュー」を経験したのでした。

 

日本には冬の時期にしか感じることができない、雪が降るときのオノマトペがたくさんあります。

絶え間なく降る雪の様子は「こんこん」。雪がひるがえりながら降る様子は「ちらちら」。軽やかに降る様子は「はらはら」。空中に漂う様子は「ふわりと」「ふわっと」などと表現し、木の枝や屋根から落ちる雪は「どさっ」。聞きなれないですが「綿々（めんめん）」「霏霏（ひひ）」「蕭蕭（しょうしょう）」なんて表現もあるようです。どれもその景色がイメージできますが、やはり表現としては「しんしんと降る雪」が寒い雪の降る様子に一番ぴったりな気がします。

 

名古屋は午後から晴れてすっかり雪が消えてしまいました。ですがしばらく寒い予報です。こんな日は、童謡の♪ゆきやこんこん～♪に出てくる猫のように、できれば丸くなって何もしたくないですね…。

It has been cold since last night, and Nagoya has had its first snowfall in two years. I think the last memorable snowfall before that was about 10 years ago, and I remember that I was able to make a rather large snowman then.

I remember making a rather large snowman at that time. I once heard the phrase “the snow is falling” on TV. It is more appropriate to hear “rain has fallen,” but it is a little strange to hear “snow has fallen. You might think that the snow on the roof fell and hit the people walking downstairs, but it seems to mean that it started snowing.

In English, the word “snowfall” is a literal translation of “snow began to fall. However, I think it is still the usual Japanese way of thinking that rain and snow “fall” and not “fall”.

 

Come to think of it, the first time I experienced “snow falling” was in the winter when Staff T was in the third grade of elementary school.

We were having tea in the tatami room of his grandparents’ house when suddenly there was a sound from the roof that we had never heard before: “ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

An earthquake?” I thought, but there was no shaking, and when the sound stopped, the same quiet snowy world returned as before. Apparently, it was the sound of snow falling from the roof.

For a moment, I didn’t understand what had happened, but once I understood, I was terrified. If I became trapped underneath it, my life would be in danger. Thinking about it now, it was quite a dangerous hari-hat. Anyway, this is how I experienced my “snowfall debut” without any injuries, with the blessings of God and my ancestors.

In Japan, there are many onomatopoeias for snowfall that can only be felt during the winter season.

The incessant snowfall is called “kon-kon. Flickering snow” for snow falling in a fluttering pattern. Flutter” for snow falling lightly. Drifting snow in the air is expressed as “fluffy” or “fluffy,” and snow falling from tree branches or roofs is “thud. Some people may be unfamiliar with the term “snow,” but there are also expressions such as “fluffy,” “incessant falling,” “incessant falling,” and “snowy,” “snowy,” and “snowy, snowy, snowy. All of them give us an idea of the scenery, but I think that “snow falling softly” is the most appropriate expression for the cold snowfall.

 

In Nagoya, it cleared up in the afternoon and the snow has completely disappeared. But it is forecast to be cold for a while. On days like this, I’d rather curl up and do nothing, just like the cat in the nursery rhyme “Yukiya Konkon”….
