あさって８日の未明、２０２２年１１月８日以来、３年ぶりに日本全国で皆既日食が見られるそうです。明日９月７日の夕方にのぼった満月が深夜１時２７分に欠け始め、２時３０分から３時５３分の間に月が完全に地球の影に入り皆既月食となり、部分月食が４時５７分に終わるとのこと。各地で月の高度は違いますが、月食の経過時刻はどこから見ても同じだそうです。分単位の時刻まで分かってしまうんですね。

起きているには辛い時間帯ではありますが、地球の影に完全に入った時の赤銅色（しゃくどういろ）の「ブラッドムーン」と呼ばれる月はぜひ肉眼で見てみたいものです。望遠鏡などがあればさらに鮮明に影が移動する様子や月の色などを鮮明に観察できるのでしょうね。以前子どもだましのような望遠鏡を購入し、皆既月食を観察した気がするのですが、どこにしまい込んだか全く思い出せません。

観察のコツとしては、月の位置を前もって確認しておくこと、だそうです。大きく欠けてしまってからは月を探すのに手間取る可能性があるからです。また月ばかりに意識が集中しがちですが、月食により暗くなった空には、それまで月の明かりにより肉眼で見えなかった星が見え、夜空に瞬く星々を楽しめるのだとか。

 

個人的な悩みですが、天体ショーの情報を耳にするたび月食と日食の星の並びが分からなくなり、混乱してまいます。何度も経験している現象のはずなのですが、いつまで経っても太陽と地球と月の並びが思い出せず情けなくなります。おさらいに付き合わせて申し訳ないのですが、整理をさせていただきますね。

 

８日未明に起こる「月食」は「太陽、地球、月」の順に一直線に並び、太陽からの光を地球が受けた時にできる影の中を月が移動する時に起こる現象です。明るい満月が欠けていくように見えるのは地球の影が移動しているからで、一部だけ欠けるのを「部分月食」、完全に影に隠れるのを「皆既月食」といいます。

赤銅色に見えるのは、太陽の光のなかで波長の短い青や紫色は地球の大気中で散乱し、最も波長の長い赤色が影を通って月まで届くからです。

宇宙に出ない限り地球を俯瞰的に見ることができず、自分が地球に住んでいて、地球が自転していることなど実感しにくいものです。皆既月食で地球の影が動くのを観察すると、地球の自転を感じ、自分が地球に住んでいることを実感できる気がします。

 

そして「日食」は「太陽、月、地球」の順に並び、太陽と地球の間で月が光を遮り太陽が欠けて見え、日中に月の影に入る地域だけが観測できる現象です。太陽と月の大きさの比率は、４００：１ですが、地球からの距離が違うため奇跡的に月が太陽と同じ大きさに見え、太陽を隠していきます。明るい昼間に月が太陽をすっぽりと隠し、辺りが暗くなる皆既日食は、理屈の分かっている現代の私たちでも神秘的に感じるのですから、古の人々の驚きは想像以上だったことでしょう。天岩戸の神話などが生まれるのも納得できます。

 

実は今回の月食と同じ日、８日の夜に土星と接近した月を見ることができるのだそうです。８日未明に皆既日食が終わったあと、夕方東の空にのぼった月の横で明るく輝く土星が見えるとのこと。９日未明の午前２時頃には月に３.２度まで月に接近するのだとか。２日連続の夜更かし、体力に自信のある方はチャレンジしてみてください。

The day after tomorrow, on the 8th, in the early hours of the morning, a total lunar eclipse will be visible across all of Japan for the first time in three years since November 8, 2022. The full moon rising tomorrow evening, September 7th, will begin to wane at 1:27 AM. Between 2:30 AM and 3:53 AM, the moon will fully enter Earth’s shadow, resulting in a total lunar eclipse. The partial eclipse will end at 4:57 AM. While the moon’s altitude varies by location, the sequence of the eclipse will be the same everywhere. You can even know the exact minute it happens.

It’s a tough time to stay awake, but I really want to see the copper-red “Blood Moon” with my own eyes when it’s fully in Earth’s shadow. If you have a telescope, you could observe the shadow’s movement and the moon’s color even more clearly. I vaguely recall buying a cheap telescope years ago to observe a total lunar eclipse, but I have absolutely no idea where I stashed it.

A key tip for viewing is to locate the moon beforehand. Once it’s significantly eclipsed, finding it might take some effort. Also, while the moon tends to grab all the attention, the darkened sky during an eclipse reveals stars previously obscured by moonlight, allowing you to enjoy the twinkling stars in the night sky.

 

This is a personal struggle, but every time I hear about a celestial event, I get confused about the alignment of the stars during a lunar or solar eclipse. I should know this by now, having experienced it many times, but I still can’t remember the alignment of the Sun, Earth, and Moon, which is embarrassing. I apologize for making you review this with me, but let me organize it for clarity.

 

The “lunar eclipse” occurring in the early hours of the 8th happens when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align in a straight line. The Moon passes through the shadow cast by the Earth as it blocks sunlight. The bright full moon appears to fade because the Earth’s shadow moves across it. When only part of the moon is obscured, it’s called a “partial lunar eclipse”; when it’s completely hidden, it’s a “total lunar eclipse.”

The coppery red color is because the shorter wavelengths of blue and violet light scatter in Earth’s atmosphere, allowing only the longest wavelengths of red light to pass through the shadow and reach the moon.

Unless you go into space, you can’t see Earth from above, making it hard to truly feel that you live on Earth and that it rotates. Observing the Earth’s shadow move during a total lunar eclipse makes you feel the Earth’s rotation and gives you a real sense of living on this planet.

 

A solar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Moon, and Earth align in that order. The Moon blocks the Sun’s light between the Sun and Earth, making the Sun appear partially or fully obscured. This phenomenon is only observable during daytime in regions that fall within the Moon’s shadow. Although the Sun and Moon have a size ratio of 400:1, due to their differing distances from Earth, the Moon miraculously appears the same size as the Sun and can completely cover it. Even for us modern people who understand the science, a total solar eclipse—where the moon completely obscures the sun in broad daylight, plunging the surroundings into darkness—feels mystical. The astonishment of ancient people must have been beyond imagination. It’s no wonder myths like the Cave of the Sky Rock emerged.

 

Actually, on the same night as this lunar eclipse, the 8th, you can see the moon close to Saturn. After the total solar eclipse ends in the early hours of the 8th, Saturn will be visible shining brightly beside the moon rising in the eastern sky in the evening. Around 2:00 AM on the 9th, Saturn will come within 3.2 degrees of the moon. For those confident in their stamina, why not try staying up late two nights in a row?
