朝から寒いですね。

 

 

 

全国的に、これから週末にかけて日本列島上空に強い寒気が居座る予想でして、日本海側の広い範囲で雪が降り続くようですね。大雪による道路の大規模な立ち往生などに十分な注意が必要のようですが、寒気が強まるタイミングで太平洋側でも雪の降るところがある見込みのようですので、今から既にびびっているスタッフYの今朝であります。

 

ところで、寒い時にみなさまはどんな暖をとっていますか？

連続テレビ小説では、島根の寒さに耐えかねたヘブン先生が、リヨさんからいただいた湯たんぽに「アタタカイ！　アア！　スバラシ！」なんて感激したシーンがあったりしましたが、寒さに耐えられないヘブン先生がちょっとキレ気味なのがとても印象的でした。寒さって、確かに気持ちまでもってかれますよね。

 

いただいた湯たんぽが瀬戸物のかまぼこ型だったのが面白かったのですが、湯たんぽの歴史が意外と古いことを知ってて少々驚きました。始まりは中国の唐の時代のようでして日本には室町時代に伝来。当初は陶器製が主流でしたが、江戸時代には銅製、大正・昭和期にはブリキ製が普及し、現代ではプラスチック製やPVC製が主流となり、電子レンジで加熱できるタイプも登場。電気暖房の普及で一度は減少しますが、エコや防災意識の高まりで再び注目され、多様な素材とデザインで現在も愛用されています。

 

ちょっと調べてみたのですが、時代物の湯たんぽその形も素材も様々なのでデザインも面白おかしく様々なものが多くありました。素材デザイン問わずお湯の注ぎ口があって、足触りのよい温かくなるものでしたらもうそれは湯たんぽなんだな…笑。

 

唐の時代の見ず知らずの人、ヘブン先生などなどどの時代も湯たんぽを使っていたであろう方がその温かさに安心して「アタタカイ！　アア！　スバラシ！」なんて言葉がどれにも浮かんでくるようなのは私だけでしょうか。しかもその丸っこいフォルムも相まってどうしてもフフッと笑ってしまうので、そこはどうかお許し願いたいものです。

 

そして、時代とともに素材や形を変えながらも、その温もりと利便性から現代でも多くの人に愛用され続けている知恵の道具湯たんぽ、これからも少しづつではありますが進化し続けてほしいとも願っております。

It’s cold since morning, isn’t it?

 

Nationwide, a strong cold front is expected to linger over the Japanese archipelago through the weekend, with snow continuing to fall across a wide area on the Sea of Japan side. While we need to be very careful about large-scale traffic jams on roads due to heavy snow, it seems snow is also expected to fall on the Pacific side when the cold front intensifies. So, I’m already freaking out this morning.

 

By the way, how do you all keep warm when it’s cold?

In the morning TV drama, there was a scene where Mr. Heaven, unable to endure the cold in Shimane, was thrilled by the hot water bottle he received from Riyo-san, exclaiming, “So warm! Ahh! Wonderful!” It was quite memorable seeing Mr. Heaven, who couldn’t stand the cold, getting a bit irritable. The cold really does get to you, doesn’t it?

 

I thought it was funny that the hot water bottle I received was a ceramic fish cake-shaped one, but I was a bit surprised to learn the history of hot water bottles is surprisingly old. It seems they originated in China during the Tang Dynasty and were introduced to Japan during the Muromachi period. Initially, ceramic ones were mainstream, but copper ones became popular in the Edo period, and tinplate ones in the Taisho and Showa periods. Nowadays, plastic and PVC ones are mainstream, and types you can heat in the microwave have also appeared. Though their use declined with the spread of electric heating, they’ve regained popularity due to growing eco-consciousness and disaster preparedness. They’re still beloved today in diverse materials and designs.

 

I did a little research and found that vintage hot water bottles come in all sorts of shapes and materials, with many designs being quite whimsical and varied. Regardless of material or design, if it has a spout for pouring hot water and provides that pleasant warmth against your skin, well, that’s a hot water bottle… lol.

With every hot water bottle, I can’t help but imagine someone from the Tang Dynasty—a stranger, or perhaps even Heaven-sensei—feeling its warmth and exclaiming, “So warm! Ahh! Wonderful!” Their words seem to float up from each one. Combined with their round forms, it’s just too funny not to laugh, but please forgive me for that laugh.

 

Though materials and shapes have changed with the times, the hot water bottle remains a tool of wisdom, cherished by many today for its warmth and convenience. I hope it continues to evolve, bit by bit, for years to come.
