ついこの間まで、出かける時はカーディガンで十分だったのに、いつのまにかマフラーやコートの出番が回ってきました。季節が進むのは早く、カレンダーをめくるたびに、ちょっと驚いてしまいます。

そして、今日から二十四節気は立冬（りっとう）。暦の上では冬になりました。

とはいえ、多くの地域ではまだまだ紅葉がはじまったばかりで、冬というよりも秋の雰囲気が色濃く、今日は汗ばむような陽気でした。しかし、朝晩は冷え込みますので、そろそろ寒さに備えた冬支度を始めた方もいるのでは。

 

寒くなってくると、「そろそろお鍋が食べたいな。」と思う瞬間が増えるのですが、今日11月7日は「鍋の日」ということをご存知でしょうか。

「11＝いい 7＝なべ」の語呂合わせで、この日は立冬と重なることもあり、鍋はじめにぴったりだということから決められました。
こうなってくると、無性にお鍋をつつきたくなりますよね。この週末はお鍋にしようかな。

 

 

もう少し本格的に寒くなると、「寒いから外に出るのはいやだなあ。」と思うことも多くなってきます。これからはいよいよ年末に向かって季節は進み、時間のわりにやることはたくさんあって、疲れてしまうときもありますが、新しい年を迎える前に家の中もスッキリさせたいところ。近頃では「生前整理」や「終活」という言葉をよく耳にしますが、動きやすいこの季節はとりかかるにはもってこいかもしれません。

 

元気なうちに「生前整理」をしておくと、自分が亡くなったあとに、遺族にかかる負担を軽くすることができますので、定年退職をしたタイミングや子供が自立した時期などは、自分の財産や所有物を整理しようと考えるきっかけになるタイミングです。

生前整理とは、ある意味でこれまでの暮らしを大きく変えることになりますので、これまでの人生を振り返るとともに、老後の生活を考える大切な機会ともいえます。

 

生前整理が必要かどうかという話になると、自分がいつ病気になるか、または亡くなるのかということはわからないため、なかには「とくに何もしなくてもいいのでは？」と考える方もいるかもしれません。

ですが、早くから生前整理をされている方々は、「残される家族の負担を減らせること」を一番の理由に、自分のためというよりも、残される家族や友人のために行われているのではないでしょうか。

自分が亡くなった後は、家族や友人たちが「遺品整理」をすることになります。その際、不要なものを事前に処分しておけば、遺族たちの負担はとても軽くなるに違いありません。また、家や土地のように、相続が発生する財産はトラブルの原因になることもあります。生前整理は、遺される家族への「思いやり」なのかもしれませんね。

Just the other day, a cardigan was enough when going out, but before I knew it, it was time to bring out the scarves and coats. The seasons advance quickly, and every time I flip the calendar, I’m a little surprised.

And starting today, the solar term is Rittō (Beginning of Winter). According to the calendar, winter has arrived.

That said, in many areas, the autumn leaves have only just begun to change. The atmosphere feels more distinctly autumnal than wintry, and today was warm enough to make you sweat. However, mornings and evenings are getting chilly, so some of you may be starting to prepare for the cold.

 

As it gets colder, I find myself thinking, “I’m starting to crave hot pot,” more often. Did you know that today, November 7th, is “Hot Pot Day”?

It was chosen because the numbers “11” (pronounced “ii”) and “7” (pronounced “nabe”) sound like ‘good’ and “pot,” respectively. Coinciding with the start of winter, it’s considered the perfect day to kick off hot pot season.
Now that I mention it, I’m suddenly dying for some hot pot. Maybe I’ll make some this weekend.

 

 

As the cold sets in more seriously, you might find yourself thinking, “It’s too cold to go outside,” more often. From here on, the season moves steadily toward year-end. There’s often a lot to do relative to the time available, and it can be tiring. Still, you probably want to tidy up your home before welcoming the new year. Lately, terms like “pre-death organization” and “end-of-life planning” are often heard. This season, when it’s easier to move around, might be the perfect time to start.

 

Getting your affairs in order while you’re still healthy can lighten the burden on your family after you pass away. Timing like retirement or when your children become independent can be a good opportunity to start thinking about organizing your assets and possessions.

In a way, getting your affairs in order means making significant changes to your current lifestyle. It’s also an important chance to reflect on your life so far and consider your life in later years.

 

When considering whether pre-death organization is necessary, some might think, “Why bother doing anything at all?” since no one knows when they might fall ill or pass away.

However, those who start early often cite “reducing the burden on the family left behind” as their primary reason. It’s done less for themselves and more for the sake of the family and friends they leave behind.

After one passes away, family and friends must handle the “estate cleanup.” If unnecessary items are disposed of beforehand, the burden on the bereaved is undoubtedly lightened. Furthermore, assets subject to inheritance, like houses and land, can sometimes become sources of conflict. Estate planning may be an act of “consideration” for the family left behind.
