甲子園がそろそろ準決勝に差し掛かり、先日から暑い夏を自分が勝手に熱くしているのですが、本日は朝からお隣の岐阜県代表の県立岐阜商業VS日大三高の準決勝であります。すみません、ちょっと仕事が手に付きません…。

 

 

 

 

どうやら2－2で延長戦にもつれ込み、10回表日大三高が2点追加し、これから裏の県立岐阜商業の攻撃入ったようです。先日の横浜高校戦が頭をよぎり、何も手につかない方がたくさんいるのではないでしょうか。私もそのひとりであります。

 

それにしてもいろいろ暑い夏ですが、先日夏の定番中の定番スイカを食べたのですが、最近はもっぱらカットスイカを購入。さすがに丸ごと買うことは出来ないのですが、先日丸ごとのスイカを買って帰る人をみかけまして。手にとる姿をちょっと羨望の眼差しで見てしまいます。

 

何故って、想像なんですが、きっとイベントや集まりで大勢でワイワイ言いながら食べるのだろうな…なんて様子とテンションが伝わってきて、その姿に悲壮感なんて1ミリも感じませんよね。さらにはスイカ割なんてもしするのであったらサイコーじゃないですか。

 

ところで先日知ったのですが、スイカ割には公式のルールがどうやらあるらしいのですが、ご存知だったでしょうか。一部抜粋ですが、それはそれは結構本格的でした。

 

・スイカと割る人の距離:5m以上7m以内（意外とゆるい）

・棒のサイズ:直径5cm以内、長さ1m20cm以内　（公式の素材はヒノキらしい）

・チーム構成:割る人1名と、割る人をサポートする複数名のサポーター（何人でもいいようですね）

・目隠し:割る人は手ぬぐいで目隠しをする

・回転:目隠し後、右回りで5回と3分の2回転

・時間:1分30秒

・サポーターの声:サポーターは、割る人に対して「もう少し右」「まっすぐ」などと声をかけて、スイカの位置を教える

・審判:スイカの割れ具合によって点数がつけられ、最も点数の高いチームが優勝

 

 

 

 

とまあこんな感じなのですが結構本格的。もちろん本格的な大会もあるようでして、山形県尾花沢市では毎年夏になると「全日本すいか割り選手権大会」が行われれるです。さらにこの大会にはこの選手権大会ではスイカ割り専用の棒が使われるようです。専用の棒ということだけあって、グリップは手にフィットしやすいように加工されていて、スイカを割るときのパワーを最大限に引き出すことができるといい、材質はヒノキ。さらには審判員もスイカ愛を試される試験をくぐり抜けた資格がいるようであります。

 

どうですしょうか、本気度を感じられますよね。甲子園のみならずこのスイカ割大会のそうですが、各所で夏の負けられない熱い戦いが繰り広げられているようです。

 

そんなつぶやきをしていると、先ほどの県立岐阜商業VS日大三高の決勝戦の結果が目に飛び込んできました。両校の選手、暑い中の素晴らしい試合をありがとう、そしてこの流れで、がんばった選手たちに冷たいスイカを食べさせたくなってくるのは言うまでもありません。

The Koshien Tournament is approaching the semifinals, and I’ve been getting myself all worked up about the hot summer since the other day, but today is the semifinal match between Gifu Prefectural Gifu Commercial High School, representing neighboring Gifu Prefecture, and Nihon University Third High School. Sorry, I can’t concentrate on my work…

It seems the game went into extra innings tied at 2-2, and in the top of the 10th inning, Nihon University Third High School added two more runs. Now it’s Gifu Commercial High School’s turn to bat in the bottom of the inning. The recent game against Yokohama High School is still fresh in my mind, and I’m sure many people are feeling the same way—unable to focus on anything else. I’m one of them.

 

Anyway, it’s been a hot summer, and while I recently ate watermelon, a summer staple, I’ve been buying pre-cut watermelon lately. I can’t afford to buy a whole one, but I saw someone carrying a whole watermelon home the other day. I couldn’t help but envy them a little.

 

Why? Well, I imagine that they must be eating it at an event or gathering with a large group of people, chatting and having a good time… That kind of scene and energy comes through, and there’s not a hint of sadness in it. And if they’re doing watermelon-cutting, that’s the best, isn’t it?

 

By the way, I recently learned that there are apparently official rules for watermelon-cutting. Did you know that? Here’s a partial excerpt, but it’s quite serious.

 

• Distance between the watermelon and the person breaking it: 5m to 7m (surprisingly lenient)

• Stick size: Diameter of 5cm or less, length of 1m20cm or less (the official material is apparently cypress)

• Team composition: One person breaking the watermelon and multiple supporters assisting them (any number seems to be acceptable)

• Blindfold: The person splitting the watermelon wears a handkerchief as a blindfold

• Rotation: After putting on the blindfold, rotate clockwise five times and two-thirds of a turn

• Time: 1 minute and 30 seconds

• Supporters’ instructions: Supporters guide the person splitting the watermelon by shouting instructions like “a little more to the right” or “straight ahead” to indicate the watermelon’s position

• Judging: Points are awarded based on how well the watermelon is split, and the team with the highest score wins

 

It’s pretty serious, isn’t it? Of course, there are also official competitions. In Obanazawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, the “All-Japan Watermelon-Smashing Championship” is held every summer. Additionally, this championship uses a special watermelon-smashing stick. The grip is designed to fit comfortably in the hand, maximizing the power when smashing the watermelon, and the material is cypress wood. Furthermore, it seems that the referees must pass a test to prove their love for watermelons in order to qualify.

 

What do you think? You can really feel the seriousness of it, can’t you? Not only at Koshien, but also at this watermelon-smashing tournament, it seems that intense battles are being fought all over the place during the summer.

 

As I was musing on this, the results of the final match between Gifu Prefectural Commercial High School and Nihon University Third High School caught my eye. Thank you to the players from both schools for the wonderful match in the heat, and it goes without saying that I feel like treating the hardworking players to some cold watermelon.
