長いゴールデンウィーク期間も明け、気合と共に通常運転に戻られている方も多いことでしょう。すぐにはエンジンがかからないかもしれませんね。

連休明けの体がだるい、意欲がわかないなどの症状は５月病ともいわれます。特に４月に環境が大きく変化した新入生や新入社員、引っ越しをされた方などは無意識にストレスを溜めやすく、この連休明けは注意が必要だそうです。くれぐれも無理のないようにお過ごしください。

私は連休後半、珍しく体調を崩してしまい、行楽地で楽しむ人々をニュースなどで眺めて過ごしておりました。皆さまはどのような連休を過ごされたでしょうか？

 

 

 

 

さて今では一般的に使用され、ここ数日何度も耳にした「ゴールデンウィーク」という言葉ですが、いつ頃どのように生まれたのでしょうか。

様々な説があるようですが、ひとつにはラジオ業界で元々使われていた「ゴールデンタイム」に由来するという説があります。ラジオの聴取率が高くなる時間帯をこう呼んでいました。また大型連休のころに最もラジオの聴取率が高くなる期間を「黄金週間」「ゴールデンウィーク」と呼んでいたのだとか。

 

また映画業界が造ったという説もあります。１９５１年の春の連休中に公開された映画「自由学校」が大ヒットしたことに関係しているとか。正月映画やお盆映画に並ぶヒット作が出たことから、翌年のこの時期を「ゴールデンウィーク」と呼んで宣伝したそうです。

当時映画は連休の貴重な時間を費やす価値のある、最大の娯楽だったのかもしれません。大ヒットしたとされる映画の「自由学校」ですが、ちょっと興味が湧いたので覗いてみました。題名から推測すると学校に関する映画なのかと思いきや、敗戦下の連合国軍占領下の日本で自由という価値観に翻弄される夫婦のドタバタ劇でもあり、戦後の日本を痛烈に風刺したシュールな大人の映画でもありました。

 

さてそういう訳で、「ゴールデンウィーク」という言葉はラジオ業界や映画業界から生まれた言葉とされているため、商業的な色合いが強い言葉としてNHKでは使用されないのだとか。また休みの期間が常に一週間とは限らないことも理由となっているようです。代わりに大型連休、春の連休、５月の連休などが使用されています。来年注意して聞いてみようと思います。覚えていれば…。

そういえば昔、山口百恵さんが歌番組で歌詞の「真っ赤なポルシェ」を「真っ赤なクルマ」と歌ったという噂を聞いたことがあります。真相は定かではありませんが、昔はそれほど規制も厳しかったということでしょうか。

現在はそこまで厳しい規制はないように思えます。

 

ちなみにゴールデンウィークは日本特有の連休ではありますが、中国でも５月の「労働節」１０月の「国慶節」、２月の「春節」を通称で「黄金周」と呼んでいるようです。国は違えどやはり漢字の国、長い休みは「黄金」のイメージなのですね。

 

また英語でも視聴率の高い時間をゴールデンタイムと呼ぶのかと思いましたら、完全な和製英語でした。英語ではプライムタイム（prime time)と言うそうです。ゴールデンタイムは「人生の最も輝いていた時期」を指すことはあるようですが意味合いが違ってきます。和製英語にはくれぐれも注意しましょう。

The term “Golden Week” is now in common use and I have heard it many times in the past few days, but when and how did it originate?

There are various theories, but one theory is that it originated from the “golden hour” originally used in the radio industry. One theory is that it comes from “prime time,” which was originally used in the radio industry to refer to the time of day when radio listening rates were highest. The period of highest radio listening rate around the time of major holidays was called “Golden Week” or “Golden Week.

 

There is also a theory that the movie industry coined the term “Golden Week” in connection with the blockbuster success of the movie “Jiyu Gakko (Free School),” which was released during the spring holidays in 1951. Since the film was a hit on par with New Year’s Day movies and Obon movies, the following year this period was promoted as “Golden Week.

 

In those days, movies were probably the greatest entertainment worth spending precious time on consecutive holidays. The movie “Free School,” which is said to have been a big hit, piqued my interest, so I took a peek. I guessed from the title that it was a movie about school, but it was also a slapstick drama about a couple who are at the mercy of the values of freedom in defeated, Allied-occupied Japan, and a surrealistic adult movie that bitingly satirized postwar Japan.

 

The term “Golden Week” is said to have originated in the radio and movie industries, so it is not used by NHK as it has a strong commercial connotation. Another reason is that the vacation period is not always a week long. Instead, major holidays, spring holidays, May holidays, etc. are used. I will pay attention and ask next year. If I remember….

By the way, I once heard a rumor that Momoe Yamaguchi sang the lyrics “bright red Porsche” as “bright red car” on a singing show. I am not sure of the truth, but I guess it means that the regulations were so strict in the past.

It seems that there are no such strict regulations nowadays.

 

Incidentally, Golden Week is a consecutive holiday unique to Japan, but in China, “Labor Day” in May, “National Day” in October, and “Spring Festival” in February are commonly known as “Golden Week. Although the countries are different, they are still countries with Chinese characters, and long holidays are associated with the image of “gold.

 

I wondered if the hours with high viewer ratings are also called “golden time” in English, but it is a completely Japanese word. In English, it is called “prime time. Golden time” is sometimes used to refer to ‘the most glorious time of one’s life,’ but the meaning is different. Please be careful with Japanese-English words.

ここ名古屋、本日もよいお天気です。

 

 

 

 

このお天気ですから、この連休お片付けをされている方も多いのではないでしょうか。

 

先日もお片付けの買取をさせていたのですが、しばらく目にすることのなかった家族や先代の方々が大切にされていた御品をひとつひとつ確認するすのですが、その際には「そういえば、お父さん昔使っていたね。」「昔飾っていたのみたことある、懐かしいな…。」などと、ご家族やその御品の思い出がたくさん溢れてくる場面が幾度となくあります。

 

また、「手放す前にひとつひとつ丁寧にみることができてよかったです。」などという場面もあったり、そんな時はいつもジーンときてしまうのと共に、身の引き締まる思いにもなるものです。手放す御品はここで旅立ってきますが、ご家族とその御品との思い出はずっと大切にしてほしいなぁ…。などと思う場面が多い連休でありました。

 

さてさて、本日はこどもの日。

鯉のぼりを飾っているお家がこのところ少なくなってきましたが、古美術風光舎は今年から小さな鯉のぼりを店先に泳がせております。近所のお子さんや親子連れの目に読まるようでして、先日も小さな子供が

 

やねよりたかい こいのぼり
おおきいまごいは おとうさん
ちいさいひごいは こどもたち
おもしろそうに およいでる

 

なんて元気いっぱいの声でうたっている様子を店の窓から見ておりました。こどもたちの元気いっぱいの歌声と爽やかな晴天の空に泳ぐこいのぼり、ほんとうによく似合います。

 

ところで、さっき歌っていた鯉のぼりのうたなんですが、ちょっと気になったのですが。

「おかあさん」はどこへ。歌にもあるように、赤いのは女の子の子どもらしいので、どうもおかあさんではないようです。

 

諸説あるようなのですが、

実はこの行事、現在は男の子の祭りとされているのですが、実際は女性が小屋にこもって田んぼの神にその年の豊作を願うという女の祭りだったということもあるようです。昔の暦でいけば5月5日は今でいう6月の梅雨入りの季節であたるようでして、この時期の雨量よって秋の稲の収穫が左右されるこの時期は実に大切な時期のようでして、女性が農耕の神を祀る風習があったようです。この風習は弥生時代からというから稲作の広まりとともに始まったとされており、一説によれば卑弥呼がこの風習を始めたともされています。

 

そのため農村の女性たちは一日、集落の小屋や神社の拝殿などに集まり祈りを捧げ、神事のあとに直会とよばれる神様との今でいう食事会や宴会でご馳走や酒を飲み、楽しみながらも朝がくるまでその場にいることになっていたようです。言い換えれば年に一度、夫や子、舅や姑から解放される日だったようです。

 

その名残なのでしょうか、現在のこいのぼりにおかあさんはなし。そのかわり、古のこいのぼり伝説が「羽伸ばしておやすみでいいよ。」と泳ぎながら言っておりますので、実は女性にとってはサイコーの日だったようですね。

 

今でこそこどものためのイベントなどが多く、こいのぼりと同じようにぜひお休みにしたいとことろではありますが、現実はかなり難しい。こどもの日に食事会や宴会でご馳走や酒を飲み、楽しみながらも朝がくるまでその場にいる…なんて世界線がまた復活しないかな…。などと、元気に泳ぐこいのぼりの眺めながら願っている5月5日でありました。

I remember seeing them displayed in the past…” and so on. There are many times when we are filled with memories of our family members and their items.

There have also been times when we have said, “I’m glad I was able to carefully look at each piece before I let it go. I am always moved by these moments, and at the same time, I feel a sense of deepening of my own strength. The items that we are parting with will leave here, but I hope that the memories of the family and the items will be cherished forever…. I hope that the memories of the family and their belongings will be cherished for a long time….

 

Today is Children’s Day.

Recently, there are fewer and fewer houses decorated with carp streamers, but starting this year, Fukousha Antique Art has put up a small carp streamer in front of our store. The other day, a small child came up to us and said, “I have a carp streamer that is taller than a yane (a rice paddy).

By the way, I was wondering about the carp streamer song they were singing earlier.

Where is “Okaasan”? As the song says, the red one seems to be a girl child, not a mother.

 

There are various theories,

In fact, this event is now considered a boy’s festival, but in reality, it is said to have been a woman’s festival, where women would stay in their huts and pray to the god of the rice paddies for a good harvest for the year. After the rituals, the women of the village would gather at a hut or shrine for a day to pray, and after the rituals, they would have what is now called “Naokai,” a feast or banquet with the gods where they would enjoy feasts and sake, and stay there until morning. In other words, it was a day once a year to be free from husbands, children, and mother-in-laws in Alexandria.

 

As a remnant of this, the current carp streamer without a mother is swimming around saying, “Good night. It looks like they are swimming, saying “Good night.

 

Nowadays, there are many events for children on Children’s Day, but today, “Ladies, today is a day when many things are open and you can take off your clothes. It is actually a day for difficult things.

本日、快晴の名古屋です。

桜の花が散り、新緑を芽吹かせるこの頃、いつもの道に艶やかに白い花を咲かせる木があります。

たぶんその名は「なんじゃもんじゃの木」。

 

 

正式な名前は「ヒトツバタゴ」で、高さ約１５ｍくらいになる落葉樹。なんと日本では愛知県、岐阜県、対馬にだけ自生する希少種のひとつなのだそう。その自生地は国の天然記念物にも指定されているという珍しい樹木でした。

「なんじゃもんじゃ」とても不思議な呼び名ですよね。なんでこんな名前になったのでしょうか…。

 

物の名前がわからないとき「これはなに？」と聞きます。
昔、水戸黄門として有名な徳川光圀が、時の将軍に「あの木は何という木か」とたずねられ、その返事に困り、とっさに「なんじゃもんじゃ」と答えたという話があり、それ以来、その地方に生えている珍しい正体不明の立派な木を「なんじゃもんじゃの木」と呼ぶようになったようです。

 

ほかにも、木が神事などに使われたため、名を呼ぶことをはばかったというものなど諸説あるようですが、伝えられている多くの話は同じような内容のようで、その土地ごとで、正体不明の立派な木を｢なんじゃもんじゃ｣と呼んでいる樹木は20種類以上あるのだそうです。

一般的に「なんじゃもんじゃの木」といわれているのがヒトツバタゴですが、それ以外にもホルトノキ・ハルニレ・クスノキ・アブラチャン・タブノキ・カツラなどもそう呼ばれているようです。

 

ヒトツバタゴは漢字で書くと「一ッ葉タゴ」です。小葉を持たない単葉であるため「一ッ葉」という名前がつけられました。タゴとはトネリコのことです。トネリコはヒトツバタゴと同じくモクセイ科の植物です。

実はこのトネリコとヒトツバタの葉がよく似ているのです。しかしながら違いが一つ。トネリコの葉は複葉ですがヒトツバタゴは葉が一つだけ。そこで「一ッ葉でトネリコに似ている植物」ということで「一ッ葉タゴ」という名前になったようです。

 

4月下旬から5月初旬にかけ、なんじゃもんじゃは満開になります。
まるで雪が積もったようにふわふわとしたきれいな花を咲かせるのは2週間くらいでしょうか。思えば、桜よりも儚い気がします。その「なんじゃもんじゃ」の英語名はSnow Flower（雪の花）。美しい名前ではあるけれど、なんとなくなんじゃもんじゃの方が奥深いような…。

 

桜が満開になると、ようやく長い冬が終わったんだなと、ほっとして、そして、なんじゃもんじゃの木に真っ白な花が咲くと、もう夏も近いんだなと思います。まるで雪のようなのに、初夏を感じて嬉しくなります。

見頃は今週いっぱいといったところでしょうか。

It is a beautiful sunny day in Nagoya today.

At this time when cherry blossoms are falling and fresh greenery is sprouting, there is a tree with glossy white flowers on the usual road.

Perhaps its name is “Nanjamonja tree.

Its official name is “Hitotsubatago,” a deciduous tree that grows to about 15 meters in height. It is one of the rare species that grows naturally only in Aichi, Gifu, and Tsushima prefectures in Japan. The area where it grows is designated as a national natural monument.

Nanjamonja” is a very strange name, isn’t it? I wonder how it came to be called this….

When I don’t know the name of something, I ask, “What is this? I ask, “What is this?

There is a story that Mitsukuni Tokugawa, the famous Mito Komon, was asked by the Shogun of the time, “What kind of tree is that tree?” He was at a loss for an answer and quickly replied, “Nanjamonja.

There are other theories, such as that the tree was used in Shinto rituals, and people were afraid to call it by its name, but most of the stories are similar, and there are more than 20 types of unidentified trees called “nanjamonja” in each area.

Hitotsubatago is generally called “nanjamonja tree,” but other trees such as hortonoki, harunire, kusunoki, abrachan, tabunoki, and katsura are also so called.

Hitotsubatago is “one-leafed tago” when written by the Chinese character. The name “Hitotsuba” was given because it is a single leaf without small leaves. Tago-“ means ”ash tree” in Japanese. The ash is a member of the Moraceae family, as is the hitotsubatago.

In fact, the leaves of the ash and the hitotsubata are very similar. However, there is one difference. The ash has compound leaves, but the hitotsubatago-hitotsubata has only one leaf. Therefore, the name “Hitotsubatago” was given to this plant because it has only one leaf and resembles the ash tree.

From late April to early May, Nanjamonja is in full bloom.

It may take about two weeks for the beautiful, fluffy flowers to bloom, as if covered with snow. When you think about it, it seems more ephemeral than cherry blossoms. The English name of this “nanja monja” is Snow Flower. It is a beautiful name, but I feel that nanjamonja is more profound….

When the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, I feel relieved that the long winter is finally over. It is like snow, but it feels like early summer, which makes me happy.

The best time to see the flowers will be throughout this week.

カーネーションですね。このお軸を眺めて、母の日がもうすぐということに気がつきました。

 

さてさて、連休も中盤になりますと、毎年来週に迫った母の日のプレゼントが気になってくるのですが、リクエストが無い場合は好きな食べ物をプレゼントしたり、それも毎年同じものだとどうかなあ…なんてちょっと悩んでいる連休ど真ん中であります。母の日のプレゼントをご検討中のみなさま、なにか喜ばれるいいプレゼントみつかりましたでしょうか。（これは⁈というものがあったら教えてほしい）

 

先日ＴＶを観ていましたら、そんなカーネーションの食用カーネーションの和菓子が発売されるというニュースが耳に入りました。昨今では「エディブルフラワー」と呼ぶそうですよ。

 

「edible＝食べられる」「flower＝花」で“食べられる花”のことを「エディブルフラワー」という素敵なお名前でよばれているようですが、パンジー、ビオラ、バラ、コスモス、ナスタチュームなどさまざまな品種がエディブルフラワーとして使われております。たまに、おしゃれなカフェのランチなどにいくと添えられているだけなのかなと思ったら「こちら、食べられるんですよ。」なんてお勧めされたりして、その華やかさで料理をきれいに彩るだけでなく、野菜やフルーツと同じような感覚で色々なメニューに目にすることも多くなりました。

 

かつての食用花なんて食用菊くらいでしたが、エディブルフラワーの特徴は美しさや豊富なカラーバリエーションを楽しめることの他に実は栄養面でもとても優れており、ミネラルやビタミンなどを多く含むヘルシー食材としてその人気は年々高まっているようであります。

 

ただし食用と鑑賞用の花は農薬や育て方など異なりますので、鑑賞用は口にしてはいけませんので、そこはご注意ください。

 

そんな母の日の近づく中、このカーネーションのエディブルフラワーいいかもしれませんね。

華やかでカラーが豊富で渋みもなく、またデザートやサラダをはじめさまざまな料理に利用でき、色々な場面で活躍してくれる花なので、食材として非常に使いやすいエディブルフラワーでもあるようです。さらには食物繊維や糖質などが豊富に含まれるとともに、心臓の働きを助け、疲労回復にも効果的と言われております。

あっという間に今日から5月です。そして今日5月1日は、2019年に元号が「平成」から「令和」に変わった日でもありますね。令和も気づけば7年。「令和」の元号発表の様子は、記憶力に自信がなくなってきた私でもまだ鮮明に覚えております。

言わずと知れず、日本では天皇お一人につき元号を一つ制定する「一世一元の制」が施行されておりますので、第126代・徳仁天皇が即位され、元号が令和となりました。元号「令和」は、日本初の元号「大化」から数えて248番目であり、『万葉集』の一節から採用されました。当時も話題になりましたが、日本の古典から元号が選定されたのは初めてのこと。ちなみに、元号に使われている文字の選定回数は、「令」は初めて、「和」は20回目となっておりました。

 

 

そして、今日5月1日は、雑節のひとつ、立春から数えて88日目の「八十八夜（はちじゅうはちや）」でもあります。茶摘みの光景を見たことがなくても、「な～つ～も～ち～かづ～く　は～ちじゅ～う　は～ち～や」の歌詞を聴いたことがある方も多いのではないでしょうか。

茶摘みの歌にもあるように、昔はこの頃を春と夏の境目として、新茶を摘んだり種まきをしたりする農業の目安ともしていました。

江戸時代の農家の日記には、八十八夜の別れ霜を過ぎて、木綿を蒔く、干鰯(ほしか)を買って干し、粉にして田畑の肥料にする、杉苗を植える、さらに女性は茶摘みをするなどと記され、この日以降は霜が降りることもなく、各地域とも本格的な農作業の時期の目安となったようです。

 

新茶の時期は4月下旬から5月初旬ですが、なかでも八十八夜に摘み採られた新茶を飲むと長生きできると言われ、縁起のいいものとして古来より特別に扱われてきました。

また、八十八は組み合わせると「米」という字になることや、末広がりの「八」が重なることから、豊作や長寿を願う大切な日としてお祝いされていたそうです。

 

もうすぐ端午の節句もやってきます。柏餅と一緒に新茶の香りを楽しむのもいいかもしれません。そんなに長生きしたいわけではないけれど、どうせなら自分好みのお茶を見つけてみたいなと思います。

May has come and gone in the blink of an eye. And today, May 1, is also the day when the original name of Japan changed from “Heisei” to “2021” in 2019. It has been seven years since we changed to “Heisei” in 2025. I still vividly remember the announcement of the new year’s name “2021,” even though I am losing confidence in my memory.

As is well known, Japan has adopted the “Issei Ippongen System,” in which each emperor has one era name, so the 126th Emperor Tokujin came to the throne and the era name became “2025. The era name “2025” was the 248th in Japan since the country’s first era name “Taika,” and was adopted from a passage in the Manyoshu (The Anthology of Myriad Leaves). Although it was a hot topic at the time, this is the first time that an era name has been selected from a Japanese classic. Incidentally, this was the first time for the character “令” and the 20th time for the character “wa” to be selected for use in the era name.

 

 

 

Today, May 1, is also the 88th day counting from Risshun (the first day of spring), one of the miscellaneous days of the year, or “88th night”. Even if you have never seen the scene of tea picking, you may have heard the lyrics of the song “Natsu-mo~chi-kazu~ku hachiju~u hachi-ya”.

As in the song about tea picking, in the old days, this period was regarded as the border between spring and summer, and was also used as a guide for agriculture to pick new tea leaves and sow seeds.

In the diaries of farmers in the Edo period (1603-1867), it is written that after the frost on the 88th night, people sowed cotton, bought dried sardines, dried them, ground them into powder, and used them as fertilizer for the fields, planted cedar seedlings, and women also picked tea.

 

 

The new tea season is from late April to early May, and it is said that drinking tea picked on the 88th day of the month will help you live longer, so it has been treated as a symbol of good luck since ancient times.

Also, because the number 88 when combined forms the character for “rice” and the number eight, which is the last of the eight, overlaps, it was celebrated as an important day to wish for a bountiful harvest and long life.

 

Tango-no Sekku will soon arrive. It might be a good idea to enjoy the aroma of fresh green tea with Kashiwa Mochi. It is not that I want to live that long, but I would like to find my favorite tea anyway.

昨日のスタッフブログにもありましたが、私も子供が手を離れてからは、ゴールデンウィークに遠出するという意識が薄れております。今年は飛び石連休だとのこと。先日友人から連休前半は温泉に行くという話を聞き、前半っていつだっけ？とピンと来ていない自分に驚きました。

 

子供の手は離れましたが、親の手を取る年齢となり右往左往する日々ですが、移動中はちょっとした小旅行気分を味わっています。たった数時間の距離ですが空気が変わる気がするのです。

空気だけでなく、様々な慣習の違いも面白く、到着駅のエスカレーターに乗る時には脳が一瞬混乱します。日本のほとんどの地域では左側に立ち、主に関西地域では右側に立つという慣習の違いがあるようです。とはいえ昨今は効率的な人の流れを作るため、または片側を歩くことによる転倒の危険やエスカレーターの故障などを防ぐために両側に立つことが推奨されています。個人的な意見ですが名古屋ではこの両側立ちがかなり浸透してきているように思うのですが、大阪などではまだ左側だけに立つ人が多い気がしています。

 

これも個人的意見ですが、名古屋で両側立ちが浸透してきた一因として、時々出くわす「ストップしてね」と書かれた「巨大な手」作戦が功を奏しているのではと思っています。黄色い大きな手のひらを背負った若いスタッフ？がエスカレーターの右側を上り下りして強制的に右側をせき止めるのです。自分が流れをせき止めるのは、最初は中々勇気がいりますが、この手のひらのお陰で誰も罪悪感を抱かず、右側に堂々と立つことができ、何度か経験するうちに右側に立つことに抵抗感がなくなっていくのではないかと。他の地域でも何か工夫がされているのでしょうか？

 

そもそもなぜ関西地方だけ右側なのか。全国的に左側に立つのが多いのは、車が左側通行だからという説や、時代を遡れば武士が刀を左腰に差していて、刀がぶつからないよう昔から左側通行だったからなど、色々とささやかれております。

ますます関西の右側立ちが不思議に思えてきましたので調べてみると、有力な説として１９６７年に阪急梅田駅にエスカレーターが設置された際に流れたアナウンスが「お歩きになる方のために左側をお空けください」だったからというのがあります。

また１９７０年の大阪万博が開催された頃に海外から人が押し寄せ、欧州では主流である右立ちが根付いたともいわれています。

 

今回エスカレーターについて調べていますと、意外なことに各地のエスカレーターにひたすら乗り続ける動画や、変わり種のエスカレーターの紹介など、エスカレーターマニアの方々の動画やSNSを多数発見しました。しかもかなりの再生回数で驚きました。

面白いところでは、世界一短いとギネス認定されているエスカレーターが神奈川県川崎市の商業施設にあるとのこと。長さは５段で８３．４ｃｍ、所要時間は８秒だそうです。もともと長いエスカレーターを作るはずでしたが、工事途中に発見された太い梁により長くすることが出来ず現在の状態になったそうです。今では「プチカレーター」の愛称で観光地のひとつになっているとか。

 

名古屋にも世界に３台しかないエスカレーターのうちの２台が並んでいる場所があるそうです。名古屋駅近くの名鉄百貨店の８階と９階を繫ぐ２台で、手すりの先がぐるっと回り込む箇所が、垂直に地面に潜っていくのだとか。文章で表現するのは中々難しいので、興味のある方は写真などチェックしてみてください。世界で３台と聞くとぜひ実物を拝見しなければ。すっかりにわかエスカレーターマニアとなっています。

 

私のお勧めのエスカレーターは大阪の梅田スカイビルにある空中庭園展望台へとつづく空中エスカレーターです。二つのビルをつなぐチューブの中を進むエレベーターで、高所恐怖症の方でなければ両側の絶景が楽しめます。

 

 

 

 

そして今までで一番驚いたエスカレーターは、大昔に訪れたロシアの地下鉄のエスカレーターでした。とにかく尋常ではない深さで乗った瞬間、降り口が全く見えず、遥か彼方の点に吸い込まれていく感じで、地中深く潜っていくうちに恐怖すら感じました。そしてスピードが速いのです。乗り口でステップがビュンビュン流れるのでいつ足を踏み出せばいいか分からず、意を決して乗ると体が前に引っ張られバランスを崩すほどでした。しかし慣れというのは凄いもので、帰国した時に関空のエスカレーターがスローすぎて「故障してる？」と感じた自分がいました。慣れというのは有難くもあり、恐ろしくもあります。

As mentioned in yesterday’s staff blog, I have been less inclined to go away for Golden Week since my children have been out of the picture. This year, I heard that the holidays are a series of stepping stones. The other day I heard from a friend that the first half of the holidays will be spent at a hot spring, and I was surprised to find myself wondering when the first half was. I was surprised to find myself unable to remember when the first half of the year was.

 

My children are now old enough to take their parents’ hands, but I still feel like I’m on a short trip when I’m on the road. It is only a few hours away, but I feel as if the air changes.

Not only the air, but also the differences in customs are interesting, and when I ride the escalator at the arrival station, my brain gets confused for a moment. There seems to be a difference in customs: in most parts of Japan, people stand on the left side, and mainly in the Kansai region, people stand on the right side. Nowadays, however, it is recommended to stand on both sides for efficient flow of people or to prevent the danger of falling or malfunctioning escalators due to walking on one side. My personal opinion is that this practice of standing on both sides of the escalator is becoming more common in Nagoya, but in Osaka and other cities, many people still stand only on the left side.

 

This is my personal opinion, but I think that one of the reasons why people stand on both sides of the street in Nagoya is because of the “giant hand” strategy with a sign saying “Stop, please” that I sometimes come across. A young staff member carrying a large yellow hand? s go up and down the right side of the escalator and forcibly hold up the right side of the escalator. It takes a lot of courage at first to stand on the right side of the escalator, but thanks to this palm, no one feels guilty and can stand proudly on the right side. Are there any other innovations in other regions as well?

 

Why is it only the Kansai region on the right side in the first place? Some say that it is because cars drive on the left side of the road. Others say that it is because samurai used to carry their swords on the left side of the road so that their swords would not collide with each other.

I began to wonder why people in Kansai stand on the right side of the road, so I looked it up. One popular theory is that when an escalator was installed at Hankyu Umeda Station in 1967, the announcement that went out was “Please leave the left side of the road for those walking.

It is also said that when the 1970 Osaka World’s Fair was held, people from abroad flocked to the area, and the right side standing, which is the mainstream in Europe, took root.

 

While researching elevators this time, I unexpectedly found many videos and social networking sites of escalator enthusiasts, such as videos of people continuously riding escalators in various places and introductions to different types of escalators. Moreover, I was surprised at the considerable number of views.

One interesting point is that the escalator certified by Guinness as the world’s shortest is located at a commercial facility in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The length of the escalator is 83.4 cm with 5 steps and the time required is 8 seconds. The escalator was originally supposed to be a long escalator, but a thick beam discovered during construction made it impossible to lengthen the escalator and it ended up in its current state. It is now one of the tourist attractions with the nickname of “Petit Carreter.

 

There is a place in Nagoya where two of the only three escalators in the world stand side by side. The two escalators connect the 8th and 9th floors of the Meitetsu Department Store near Nagoya Station, and the end of the handrail wraps around the escalator and dives vertically into the ground. It is difficult to describe in words, so if you are interested, please check out the photos. When I heard that there are only three of these escalators in the world, I had to see the real thing. I’ve become a bit of an escalator fanatic.

 

I recommend the escalator that leads to the Hanging Garden Observation Deck in the Umeda Sky Building in Osaka. There is a fee for the Hanging Garden, but the escalator is free. The escalator goes through a tube connecting the two buildings, and if you are not afraid of heights, you can enjoy the spectacular view on both sides.

 

And the most amazing escalator I have ever experienced was an escalator in a Russian subway I visited a long time ago. The escalator was so deep that I could not see the exit at all and felt fear as it went deep underground. And the speed was very fast. The steps were whizzing by so fast that I didn’t know when to step out, and when I finally got on, my body was pulled forward, causing me to lose my balance. But when I returned to Japan, I found that the escalators at Kansai International Airport were so slow that I felt, “Is it malfunctioning? I felt that the escalator at Kansai International Airport was so slow that I was wondering if it was broken. Familiarity is both a blessing and a curse.
