本日、快晴の名古屋です。

桜の花が散り、新緑を芽吹かせるこの頃、いつもの道に艶やかに白い花を咲かせる木があります。

たぶんその名は「なんじゃもんじゃの木」。

 

 

正式な名前は「ヒトツバタゴ」で、高さ約１５ｍくらいになる落葉樹。なんと日本では愛知県、岐阜県、対馬にだけ自生する希少種のひとつなのだそう。その自生地は国の天然記念物にも指定されているという珍しい樹木でした。

「なんじゃもんじゃ」とても不思議な呼び名ですよね。なんでこんな名前になったのでしょうか…。

 

物の名前がわからないとき「これはなに？」と聞きます。
昔、水戸黄門として有名な徳川光圀が、時の将軍に「あの木は何という木か」とたずねられ、その返事に困り、とっさに「なんじゃもんじゃ」と答えたという話があり、それ以来、その地方に生えている珍しい正体不明の立派な木を「なんじゃもんじゃの木」と呼ぶようになったようです。

 

ほかにも、木が神事などに使われたため、名を呼ぶことをはばかったというものなど諸説あるようですが、伝えられている多くの話は同じような内容のようで、その土地ごとで、正体不明の立派な木を｢なんじゃもんじゃ｣と呼んでいる樹木は20種類以上あるのだそうです。

一般的に「なんじゃもんじゃの木」といわれているのがヒトツバタゴですが、それ以外にもホルトノキ・ハルニレ・クスノキ・アブラチャン・タブノキ・カツラなどもそう呼ばれているようです。

 

ヒトツバタゴは漢字で書くと「一ッ葉タゴ」です。小葉を持たない単葉であるため「一ッ葉」という名前がつけられました。タゴとはトネリコのことです。トネリコはヒトツバタゴと同じくモクセイ科の植物です。

実はこのトネリコとヒトツバタの葉がよく似ているのです。しかしながら違いが一つ。トネリコの葉は複葉ですがヒトツバタゴは葉が一つだけ。そこで「一ッ葉でトネリコに似ている植物」ということで「一ッ葉タゴ」という名前になったようです。

 

4月下旬から5月初旬にかけ、なんじゃもんじゃは満開になります。
まるで雪が積もったようにふわふわとしたきれいな花を咲かせるのは2週間くらいでしょうか。思えば、桜よりも儚い気がします。その「なんじゃもんじゃ」の英語名はSnow Flower（雪の花）。美しい名前ではあるけれど、なんとなくなんじゃもんじゃの方が奥深いような…。

 

桜が満開になると、ようやく長い冬が終わったんだなと、ほっとして、そして、なんじゃもんじゃの木に真っ白な花が咲くと、もう夏も近いんだなと思います。まるで雪のようなのに、初夏を感じて嬉しくなります。

It is a beautiful sunny day in Nagoya today.

At this time when cherry blossoms are falling and fresh greenery is sprouting, there is a tree with glossy white flowers on the usual road.

Perhaps its name is “Nanjamonja tree.

Its official name is “Hitotsubatago,” a deciduous tree that grows to about 15 meters in height. It is one of the rare species that grows naturally only in Aichi, Gifu, and Tsushima prefectures in Japan. The area where it grows is designated as a national natural monument.

Nanjamonja” is a very strange name, isn’t it? I wonder how it came to be called this….

When I don’t know the name of something, I ask, “What is this? I ask, “What is this?

There is a story that Mitsukuni Tokugawa, the famous Mito Komon, was asked by the Shogun of the time, “What kind of tree is that tree?” He was at a loss for an answer and quickly replied, “Nanjamonja.

There are other theories, such as that the tree was used in Shinto rituals, and people were afraid to call it by its name, but most of the stories are similar, and there are more than 20 types of unidentified trees called “nanjamonja” in each area.

Hitotsubatago is generally called “nanjamonja tree,” but other trees such as hortonoki, harunire, kusunoki, abrachan, tabunoki, and katsura are also so called.

Hitotsubatago is “one-leafed tago” when written by the Chinese character. The name “Hitotsuba” was given because it is a single leaf without small leaves. Tago-“ means ”ash tree” in Japanese. The ash is a member of the Moraceae family, as is the hitotsubatago.

In fact, the leaves of the ash and the hitotsubata are very similar. However, there is one difference. The ash has compound leaves, but the hitotsubatago-hitotsubata has only one leaf. Therefore, the name “Hitotsubatago” was given to this plant because it has only one leaf and resembles the ash tree.

From late April to early May, Nanjamonja is in full bloom.

It may take about two weeks for the beautiful, fluffy flowers to bloom, as if covered with snow. When you think about it, it seems more ephemeral than cherry blossoms. The English name of this “nanja monja” is Snow Flower. It is a beautiful name, but I feel that nanjamonja is more profound….

When the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, I feel relieved that the long winter is finally over. It is like snow, but it feels like early summer, which makes me happy.

The best time to see the flowers will be throughout this week.
