毎年梅雨の時期になると、じめじめとした蒸し暑さとともに、なんとも言えない湿気った匂いで季節を感じるのですが、今回は「香り」にまつわるお話。

 

日本におけるお香の歴史はおよそ１４００年前から始まったと言われています。

日本最古のお香の記録は歴史書・日本書紀に記されています。

 

推古３年（５３９年）、現在の淡路島に流れ着いた流木を火にくべたところ、えも言われぬ香りが辺り一面に漂ったそうです。このことからすでにこの頃には香木の存在が知られていたということになります。

 

古墳・飛鳥時代になると、魔除け・厄除け・防虫などに実用的な目的でもお香が使われるようになり、奈良・東大寺の正倉院には日本最古の香袋が収蔵されているそうです。

 

そこから平安時代になると、日常生活のためのお香として貴族社会の中により一層取り入れられ、丸薬状の形のお香／練香が発展し、定着されるようになりました。

 

そしてこのお香の必需品ともいわれるものが、香合と香炉になります。

香合とは、香を入れる「合子」（小さな蓋つきの器）のことです。

 

室町時代になると、香は茶の湯で取り入れられ、書院の床の正面に香炉を飾って香を焚くようになります。この時代の香合は、座敷の棚飾りとして花瓶や香炉と共に並べられていたそうです。

 

茶道に取り入れられた当初は、香合はすべて唐物で、唐物漆器の香合は茶の湯が始まる前から書院の飾りとして使われていましたが、唐物陶磁器の香合は、茶の湯が始まった頃の輸入品なのだそうです。

 

唐物陶磁器の香合にはいくつか種類がありますが、今回は当店にある香合についてご紹介させていただきます。

写真の手前左側がタイの宋胡録（すんころく）の香合です。

宋胡録とは、タイ古代の陶器として作られていたもの。褐色の地肌に鉄釉の線描きが特色で、桃山時代頃から茶人が見立てて取り入れていたといわれています。

 

直径約４ｃｍ、高さ約３ｃｍの手のひらにすぽりと収まるサイズのこちらの香合の中には、当時使われていたような、可愛らしいモノが入っておりました。

 

 

 

この香合とあわせて使われるのが、１枚目の写真の奥右側の「香炉」です。

 

角のある動物のようにみえるこちらの香炉、とても愛らしい様子で何かを見据えているようにも感じられます。

こちらの香炉は高さ（東部まで）約９．５ｃｍ、直径約７．５ｃｍと小柄ですが、存在感のある作品です。

 

香炉というと、馴染み深いのが仏具として使われる香炉だと思いますが、こちらの香炉はインテリア用として使っていただけるものです。

 

ちなみに私はこの香炉に、東南アジアの香りを思わせるような、オリエンタルな香りのお香を焚きたくなりました。

It is said that the history of incense in Japan began about 1400 years ago. The record of the oldest incense in Japan is recorded in the history book, Nihon Shoki. In the 3rd year of Suiko (539), when the driftwood that had drifted to the present Awaji Island was put on fire, it seems that an unspeakable scent drifted all over the area. From this, it means that the existence of fragrant trees was already known by this time.

 

In the Kofun and Asuka periods, incense was used for practical purposes such as amulets, amulets, and insect repellents. is. From that point on, in the Heian period, it was further incorporated into the aristocratic society as an incense for daily life, and pill-shaped incense / kneaded incense became established and established.

 

And what is said to be a necessity for this incense is the incense and the incense burner. Kogo is a “goko” (a container with a small lid) that holds incense. In the Muromachi period, incense was taken in with the tea ceremony, and an incense burner was displayed in front of the floor of the Shoin to burn incense. It is said that the incense of this era was lined up with vases and incense burners as shelf decorations for tatami mats. When it was first introduced into the tea ceremony, all the incense was Karamono, and the incense of Karamono lacquerware was used as a decoration for the Shoin before the start of the tea ceremony. It is an imported product. There are several types of Karamono ceramic incense, but this time we would like to introduce you to the incense in our shop.

 

 

The left side in front of the photo is the incense of Thai Song Koroku. Song Hu Roku was made as an ancient Thai pottery. It features an iron glaze line drawing on a brown background, and is said to have been adopted by tea masters since the Momoyama period. This incense, which is about 4 cm in diameter and about 3 cm in height and fits comfortably in the palm of your hand, contains cute things like those used at that time.

 

In this way, incense is simply a “container with a lid that holds an incense burner before burning.” The “censer” on the far right side of the first photo is used in conjunction with this incense. This incense burner, which looks like a horned animal, looks very adorable and makes you feel like you are looking at something. This incense burner is small with a height (up to the eastern part) of about 9.5 cm and a diameter of about 7.5 cm, but it has a strong presence. Speaking of incense burners, I think that the incense burner used as a Buddhist tool is familiar, but this incense burner can be used for interiors. By the way, I wanted to burn this incense burner with an oriental scent reminiscent of the scent of Southeast Asia.
