10月も後半に入り、朝晩を中心にやっと秋の気配が濃くなってきました。

この季節といえば、ハロウィンです。街中にオレンジの飾りが溢れてきましたね。

試しに『ハロウィン』と入れて検索かけてみたら、何やらかわいい幽霊たちがいっぱいでてきました 。『ジャック・オ・ランタン』と入れてみると、今度は大量のカボチャが画面を埋め尽くしました。最近の演出はどんどん凝ってきていて、感心しきりなのですが、見るだけで参加した気持ちになって満足しております。

 

ハロウィンの始まりは、紀元前のケルト民族が行っていた秋の盛大な収穫祭とされています。

ケルト民族では、1年の最終日となる10月31日。ハロウィンの日は、秋の収穫をお祝いする日であるとともに、日本でいう「お盆」のように死後の世界と現世とを隔てている扉が開き、先祖の霊が戻ってくるとも信じられていました。

それと一緒に誘われるようにして、悪霊や悪魔たちもやって来て、畑を荒らしてまわると言われていました。

そんなさまよう魔物や悪霊たちと同じ格好をして、モンスターたちの仲間ですよ、とアピールして厄逃れ、難を逃れるために、生きている人間たちは仮装するようになりました。

こういった古代ケルト人たちの大晦日のお祓い行事がルーツにあると言うことは、知れ渡っているお話かと思います。

 

そしてこの時に忘れてならないのは、ジャック・オ・ランタン（Jack-o’-Lantern）。
くりぬいたカボチャに明かりを灯してランタンにして飾られている様子は、誰もが思い浮かべるハロウィンの絵だと思います。

ですが、実はこの、ジャック・オ・ランタン、もともとはカブだったってこと、ご存知でしょうか 。

 

「ジャック・オ・ランタン」のジャックとは、アイルランドの物語に登場する男の名前です。

悪事ばかり働いていたジャックという男が、生前自分の魂を狙った悪魔を騙し、「死んでも、地獄に落とさない」という契約を結びました。その後、ジャックは寿命でこの世を去りますが、生前の行いから天国へ行くことはできず、悪魔との契約のせいで地獄に行くこともできない。行き場を失ったジャックはくり抜いたカブの中に火を灯し、今も彷徨い続けているというお話です。

 

なぜ今ではカボチャが定着しているのかというと、ハロウィンがアイルランド移民によってアメリカに伝わったとき、アメリカではカブよりカボチャの方が手に入りやすかったという理由がひとつと、カボチャがカブよりもくり抜きやすく、ろうそくを中に入れやすかったという理由もあるようです。

 

そういえば、「トリック・オア・トリート」はハロウィンの代名詞とも言えるフレーズですが、ある調査によると、ハロウィンの日に一般的なアメリカ人家庭の子供が消費するカロリーは7,000カロリーにも及ぶのだとか。7,000カロリーというと、バナナ66本分だそうです…。

可愛い衣装に身を包み、キャンディを集める子どもたちを想像すると可愛いのですが、そのカロリーはもはや恐怖でしかありません…。

As we enter the latter half of October, the signs of autumn have finally grown stronger, especially in the mornings and evenings.

This season is synonymous with Halloween. Orange decorations have started flooding the streets.

I tried searching for ‘Halloween’ and found all sorts of cute ghosts popping up. When I searched for ‘Jack-o’-lantern,’ this time the screen was filled with tons of pumpkins. The decorations these days are getting more and more elaborate, and I’m truly impressed. Just looking at them makes me feel like I’m participating, and that’s satisfying enough for me.

Halloween’s origins trace back to the grand autumn harvest festivals celebrated by the ancient Celts.

For the Celts, October 31st marked the final day of the year. Halloween was a day to celebrate the autumn harvest, but it was also believed that, much like Japan’s Obon festival, the door separating the afterlife from the living world opened, allowing ancestral spirits to return.

It was also said that evil spirits and demons would be drawn along, coming to ravage the fields.

To ward off misfortune and escape harm, the living began dressing up, mimicking the appearance of these wandering monsters and evil spirits to signal, “We’re one of the monsters!”

It’s widely known that these ancient Celtic New Year’s Eve purification rituals form the roots of Halloween.

And what we mustn’t forget at this time is the Jack-o’-Lantern.

The image of a hollowed-out pumpkin lit up as a lantern is surely the picture of Halloween that comes to everyone’s mind.

But did you know that this Jack-o’-Lantern was originally made from a turnip?

The “Jack” in “Jack-o’-Lantern” is the name of a man who appears in an Irish tale.

A man named Jack, who had done nothing but evil deeds, tricked the devil who sought his soul while he was alive, striking a deal: “Even after death, you won’t send me to hell.” Later, Jack passed away at the end of his life. However, due to his deeds in life, he couldn’t go to heaven, and because of his deal with the devil, he couldn’t go to hell either. Left with nowhere to go, Jack lit a fire inside a hollowed-out turnip and is said to wander the earth to this day.

As for why pumpkins became the norm, one reason is that when Halloween was brought to America by Irish immigrants, pumpkins were easier to find than turnips. Another reason is that pumpkins are easier to hollow out and fit a candle inside than turnips.

Speaking of which, “Trick or Treat” is practically synonymous with Halloween. But did you know? According to one study, the average American child consumes a whopping 7,000 calories on Halloween night. That’s equivalent to eating 66 bananas…

It’s adorable to imagine kids dressed in cute costumes collecting candy, but those calories are nothing short of terrifying.
