９月もそろそろ終わり、今朝も通勤途中の街路樹が少しだけ黄色く色づいているのことに気がついたのですが、季節は少しずつですが秋に確実に向かっているようですが、この時期のちょっとひんやりした朝がなによりも大好きであります。

 

さてさて、スーパーに参りますと果物売り場も充実してきておりまして、「今日は何がでているかな」と楽しみにな季節でもあるのですが、先日、林檎の新種？いえ、私が知らなかった品種にお目にかかりまして、テンションが上がりました。

「しなのプッチ」という、しなの系の通常より小さめの握りこぶしくらいの品種でしたが、姫りんごとまではいきませんが小さくて可愛いんですよ。早速、「しなのプッチ」を試食。しなの系の酸味や歯ごたえがあり美味しかったですし、なによりもこの食べきりサイズはよいです。

 

 

このように私のような興味のとっ散らかっている落ち着かない人間にとっては、新品種や食べ比べは好奇心が爆発する大好きなイベント。冬の柑橘類から始まり、夏の葡萄、トウモロコシ（これは野菜か）と、取り寄せや実際買いに出向いたりと新品種や様々な種類の食べ比べ、このところ通年にわたってドはまっておりますが、これの果物、毎年美味しい新種やであったことのない品種に出会いますので、種改良の世界はどうなってるんだ⁈すごいぞと、いつも感心致します。

 

よく知られているのは、「交雑育種法」（おしべから採った花粉を別の品種のめしべに付着させる方法）ですが、小さな木（実生）を育て、その実生や果実の形・色・味・貯蔵力、木の性質や病害虫に対する強さや実際の栽培のしやすさなど優秀なものを選び、その中から選ばれた候補を何年も試験栽培したのち、新品種として認められ、名前が付けられ誕生するまでに早くても10年以上を要すると言われています。

この「交雑育種」で生まれた品種の例としては、青森県を代表する「ふじ」や「つがる」、長野県の「シナノスイート」「シナノゴールド」など。

 

また、植物にはしばしば、紫外線などの影響で細胞に自然に突然変異が起こり、一本の枝や茎だけに元とは異なる形質があらわれるという枝変わりという現象が起こりますが、それらによって誕生した品種を「枝変わり」といいます。りんごの品種の中にも、この枝変わりによって誕生したものがいくつか存在し、枝葉や花、果実など植物の一部分だけが他の部分と違った性質になることがあるようです。

りんごはこの性質を利用して品種改良をし、苗木屋さんがいくつものりんごの掛け合わせの中から色づきを良くしたものを販売し、生産者は接木をして増やしていくそうで、主に成熟の早い品種が多いようですが、はたしてこの「しなのプッチ」が、どちらからの誕生で世に出たのでしょうね。

 

それよりも、この「しなのプッチ」のネーミング会議の様子がどうだったかが気になって仕方なかったのですが、「プチ」ではなくて「プッチ」。プッチがとてもこの林檎の可愛らしさを表現していまして非常によいのだが、センスありすぎです
