みなさま、こんにちはスタッフYでございます。

 

先日、エリザベス女王の国葬の様子をTVにてみておりましたが、全世界に放映されイギリスでの視聴率はなんと国民の４０％の方とのこと。また、沿道にお別れをしに集まった方々もものすごい数でしたね。日本でもご覧になられた方も多かったのではないでしょうか。

 

急なご逝去にもかかわらず、以前から準備をなさっていたとのことですので、すべての儀式などの執り行われ方は、とても粛々と執り行われているように感じ取れましたが、生前、女王も相当のご準備をされていたのでしょう。

 

国葬は、世界の要人やイギリス国内の皇室関係者や早々たる方々がいらっしゃいましたのたいへんな厳戒態勢のもとでピリッとした国葬になるのではと思ったのですが、ところどころにエリザベス女王の後を引き継ぐものや国民へのお心遣いやチャーミングなお人柄がわかるようなところもおありで、心温まるお葬式でもありましたね。

 

お棺のお花などはチャールズ国王が選んだもので「追憶」の花ことばを持つローズマリーや、女王の結婚式のブーケのお花を育てられたギンバイカのお花をお使いになったりと、他にも母に対する深い愛情を感じさせるものとして話題になったり、聖歌はこれまでの女王にゆかりのある聖歌が歌われていたり、ウインザー城では、女王の愛犬だった2頭のコーギー犬もひつぎの到着を待っていたりと、所々に女王のお人柄が垣間見えたりも致しました。

 

また、イギリス国教会の最高位の聖職者であるカンタベリー大主教による説教の中で、カンタベリー大主教は「21歳の誕生日に、生涯、公務に身をささげると宣言したのはよく知られている。これほどまでに約束が守られたことはほとんどない」と述べ、だれもが女王のその７０年の重みを感じたのではないでしょうか。

 

私がとても印象的たっだのは、国葬の最後に演奏されたバグパイプでありました。これも女王がお考えになられていたようですが、バグパイプの奏者の方が教会の少し高いところで演奏をしておりまたが、途中から演奏をしながらゆっくりと袖へと退出。ウェストミンスター寺院の中に鳴り響いておりましたバグパイプの音が、徐々に徐々にゆっくりと消えていきました。

ここにちょっと感動してしまいまして、この消えゆくバグパイプの音に、女王が「そろそろ行きますね、それではごきげんよう」と最後のご挨拶をていらっしゃるようなお姿のように重なってまいりました。また、消えゆくバグパイプの音を聞きながら、ゆっくりと歴史の教科書をのページをめくっていくように、「時代が変わっていくのだな」との実感も致しました。

 

時代はきっとこのような流れので、これまでもこれからも移っていくのでしょうが、エリザベス女王の国葬はそれを生きている間にはっきりと実感できた一時だったような。また、私も移り行く時代の中のほんの一瞬生きているのだけなの人なのだなとも感じました。

 

それにしても私とここにいる古美術等。彼らも私よりももっと長くももっとたくさんの時代の移り変わりを眺めてきたことでしょうから、ここまでに至った経緯がちょっと気にはなります。

今となっては何も語らず静かにここに佇んでおりますが、彼らは私よりもこれからずっと先の時代をも眺めていくでしょうから、「これからもいろいろ見ていておくれよ。」と、今日はそんな彼らに託しておきたい気分でもありました。

The other day, I was watching the State Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on TV. Also, there was a tremendous number of people who gathered along the roadside to say goodbye. Many of you must have seen it in Japan as well.

 

Despite her sudden demise, preparations had already been made in advance, so I felt that all the ceremonies and other ceremonies were carried out in a very solemn manner. The Queen must have made considerable preparations.

 

The state funeral was attended by dignitaries from all over the world, members of the British imperial family, and other people, so I thought it would be a tangy state funeral under a very strict security system, but here and there, Queen Elizabeth II was present. It was also a heartwarming funeral, where you can see the things that will take over, the consideration for the people, and the charming personality.

 

The flowers for the coffin were chosen by King Charles, and he used rosemary, which has the flower language of “reminiscence,” and myrtle flowers, which were used for the Queen’s wedding bouquet. It has become a hot topic as it expresses the deep affection for her mother, and the hymns that are related to the Queen are sung. As I waited, I could catch a glimpse of the Queen’s personality here and there.

 

Also, in a sermon by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the highest clergyman in the Church of England, it is well known that on his 21st birthday he declared that he would devote himself to public service for the rest of his life. Few promises have been kept to such an extent.” Everyone must have felt the weight of the Queen’s 70 years.

 

What impressed me the most was the bagpipes played at the end of the state funeral. This seems to have been the Queen’s idea as well, but the bagpipe player was playing a little higher up in the church, and slowly stepped out into her sleeve while playing midway through. The sound of bagpipes reverberating in Westminster Abbey slowly faded away.

I was a little touched by this, and the sound of the disappearing bagpipes overlapped with the image of the Queen saying her last goodbye, “It’s time to go. Goodbye, then.” Also, while listening to the sound of the disappearing bagpipes, I realized that “the times are changing,” as if slowly turning the pages of a history textbook.

 

The times will surely change in this way, and it will continue to change, but Queen Elizabeth’s state funeral was a time when I was able to clearly realize that while I was alive. I also felt that I am a person who lives only for a moment in the changing times.

 

Even so, the antiques that are here with me. I’m a little curious as to how they got to where they are, since they’ve probably seen more and more changes over time than I have.

Now they are quietly standing here without saying anything, but since they will be looking at the future far ahead of me, I would say, “Please keep watching over me.” Today, I felt like entrusting myself to them.
