本日は、植物学の日です。なぜ今日が植物学の日なのか、知っていますか？

 

本日四月二十四日は、植物学者である牧野富太郎博士の誕生日です。

牧野博士は1862年、今からおよそ160年前の高知県に生まれました。豊かな自然の中で幼いころから植物へ興味を持ち、植物を採集しては名前を調べ、覚えていたそうです。

 

日本の植物がまだあまり解明されていなかった時代、日本全国を調査し、植物を記録した博士は、「植物学の父」や、「日本の植物分類学の第一人者」とも呼ばれています。牧野博士が学名を付けて記録した植物は、およそ1500種以上、収集した標本資料はおよそ40万枚と言われています。

 

また、博士は植物知識の普及にも心血を注ぎました。同好会や講演会を積極的に開催し、園芸学校や高等学校でも講演を行いました。そして、学術雑誌の創刊にも携わりました。牧野博士が携わった学術雑誌は今でも刊行が続いており、論文の発表の場となっているそうです。

後世の植物学会にも大きな影響を与える、牧野博士の功績を称えて、植物学の日は認定されました。

 

牧野博士の地元である高知県では、高知県立牧野植物園が開園しています。

園内は、牧野富太郎記念館と植栽エリアからなっています。

 

植栽エリアでは、牧野博士のゆかりの植物およそ3000種以上が、美しい水景庭園や体験型の広場などに、咲き誇っているそうです。

牧野富太郎記念館では、牧野博士が実際に使用していた採集道具や、日記、ノート、植物図や写真などが多数展示されています。

2019年には、大幅にリニューアルされ、牧野博士の植物標本や、自筆の植物図などが展示されているシアターが開設されたそうです。牧野博士が描かれる植物図は、非常に緻密で、植物の個体によって異なる顔つきを絶妙に表現していると言われています。

 

牧野植物園は、植物はもちろん、建築の美しさも評判が高いです。牧野富太郎記念館を設計したのは、「海の博物館」などで知られる内藤廣さんです。美しい植物と建築が調和、ネット上で画像を見ているだけでも惚れ惚れとします。

 

 

そんな高知県立牧野植物館では、牧野博士の生誕を記念し、毎年四月二十四日は「マキノの日」とされ、入園が無料、さらには限定のスペシャルツアーも開催されているそうです。

来年の四月こそは！コロナも落ち着き、高知県を訪れることができるよう心から願っております。

It is a botanical day today. Why do you know whether today is a botanical day?

 

April 24 is a birthday of Dr. Tomitarou Makino who is a botanist today.

Dr. Makino was born in Kochi about 160 years ago now in 1862. I was interested in a plant in rich nature since childhood and checked the name of the plant when I collected a plant and seemed to remember it.

 

In the times when a Japanese plant was almost still unknown, I investigate all over Japan, and the doctor who recorded a plant is also called “botanical father” and “first person of the Japanese plant taxonomy”. As for the plant which Dr. Makino attaches a scientific name and recorded, the specimen document which I collected is said to be about 400,000 pieces about 1,500 kinds or more.

 

In addition, the doctor devoted himself/herself to the spread of plant knowledge. I held a club and a lecture positively and gave a lecture in a gardening school and the high school. And I was engaged in the foundation of a periodical of the learned journal. Publication still continues, and the learned journal which Dr. Makino was engaged in seems to become the place of the announcement of the article.

I praised an achievement of Dr. Makino who had a big influence on Botanical Society of coming ages and was authorized on a botanical day.

 

 

 

In Kochi that is a hometown of Dr. Makino, Kochi Prefectural Makino botanical garden is opened.

The garden becomes the Tomitarou Makino Memorial from the planting area.

 

In the planting area, more than about 3,000 kinds of plants of the connection of Dr. Makino seem to be in full glory in beautiful Mikage Garden or the experience-based open space.

In the Tomitarou Makino Memorial, the collection tool which Dr. Makino actually used and a diary, a notebook, a figure of plant or a photograph are displayed a lot.

In 2019, I was largely renewed, and the theater where illustrations of plant of a botanical specimen and the handwriting of Dr. Makino were displayed seemed to be established. The plant figure where Dr. Makino is drawn is very minute, and it is said that I express a different look exquisitely by an individual.

 

In the Makino botanical garden, reputation is high in the beauty of the building let alone a plant, too. It is Hiroshi Naito known at “the museum of the sea” that designed the Tomitarou Makino Memorial. A building harmonizes with a beautiful plant and I am just looking at an image and do it on a net adorably.

 

 

 

It is said every year with “a day of Makino” on April 24, and entering a kindergarten is free, and, besides, with such the Kochi Prefectural Makino plant building, the special tour of the limitation seems to be held in commemoration of the birth of Dr. Makino, too.

I pray heartily to be able to visit Kochi in April in the next year.
