早速ですが、「今日は何の日？」と勝手にコーナーを作ってしまおうと思いつきまして、不定期に開催していきたいと考えております。

（というのも毎回ブログのネタ探しの際に、今日は何の日かな…と調べる癖がついていて自分の興味がある内容であれば取り上げたいという勝手な考えで申し訳ございません。）

 

そんな今日は・・・「冥王星の日」だそうです。

皆さま、小学生のとき「水・金・地・火・木・土・天・海・冥」と覚えた記憶がありませんか。

これは太陽系で惑星の名前を”太陽から近い順”に並べたもので、当時は一番離れている冥王星まで数に含んで覚えていましたが、現在では冥王星は惑星ではないため、数えないんだとか。

なので”海”で終わるのが正解。

 

実は「今日が何の日」で冥王星の日について調べるまで冥王星が惑星だと未だに思っていたので少しお恥ずかしい話ですが…

ではいつのまに惑星ではなくなったの！？という同じ考えの方も、もしかしたらいらっしゃるかもしれませんので少し説明したいと思います。

 

元々、冥王星の日は１９３０年（昭和５年）の２月１８日にアメリカのローウェル天文台に勤務していたクライド・トンボー氏が１月２３日と１月２９日に撮影した写真を比較して太陽系の９番目の惑星とされた冥王星を発見したことから制定された記念日だそうです。

当時、この惑星の名前を決める権限はローウェル天文台と天文台の所長であったヴェスト・スライファー氏にあり、最初は神々の長である「Zeus（ゼウス）」やローウェル天文台の設立者の名前から「Percival（パーシヴァル）」など候補の挙がりましたが、どれもピンとこず・・・

そんなときに冥王星の名付け親、「ヴェネツィア・バーニー」当時１１歳の女の子が彼女のおじいさんから新しい惑星が見つかったということ、そしてその惑星は非常に見えにくいという話を聞き、ローマ神話に出てくる冥王プルートが自分の姿を消すことができることから「Pluto（プルート）」という名前をおじいさんに提案したところ、皆がその名前を気に入り採用されたという経緯があるんです。

 

まさか１１歳の女の子のネーミングセンスが抜群で驚きですよね！？私だったら・・・考えてみましたが思いつきませんね（笑）

 

少し話は逸れましたが、ではなぜ冥王星が惑星ではなくなってしまったのか？という疑問がまだ残っていますよね。

その理由はこれまで曖昧だった惑星の定義が見直されたことがきっかけでした。

２００６年８月にチェコのプラハで開かれた国際天文学連合総会で新たに科学的な惑星の定義が決定し、その定義というのが「太陽の周りを公転していること」、「ある程度の質量を保有しており、そこから生じる重力により球状であること」、「その軌道周辺で群をぬいて大きいこと」。

 

ここで冥王星は、月よりも小さく、１９９２年に冥王星の近くに冥王星と同じような大きさの天体が１，０００個以上も見つかってしまい、さらには２００５年に２００３ＵＢ３１３という冥王星より大きな惑星が発見されてしまったため、「惑星」から外されてしまったということになったようです。

 

せっかく太陽系の第９惑星になったにもかかわらず、定義した結果惑星から外されてしまうというのは私だったら訴訟案件だったかもしれませんが、現在でも冥王星の調査は続けられているそうでして大気が青色だったり、ハート形の窒素の氷河が発見されたりと次々に明らかになっているようですので、これからも新たな発見がされることを楽しみに待ってみたいと思います。

そして密かに冥王星の推しでい続けたいと思います。

It seems that today is “Pluto Day”. Ladies and gentlemen, do you remember when you were in elementary school that you remembered “water, gold, earth, fire, wood, earth, heaven, sea, and darkness”? This is the name of the planets in the solar system arranged in order of “closest to the sun”, and at that time, Pluto, the farthest planet, was included in the number, but now Pluto is not a planet, so it is not counted. I don’t know. So the correct answer is to end with “sea”.

 

Actually, I still thought that Pluto was a planet until I looked up Pluto’s day in “What day is today?” Then when did it cease to be a planet? ? There may be people who have the same idea, so I would like to explain a little.

 

Originally, Pluto Day was based on a comparison of photographs taken on January 23 and January 29 by Mr. Clyde Tombaugh, who worked at the Lowell Observatory in the United States on February 18, 1930 (Showa 5). It seems that it is the anniversary of the discovery of Pluto, which is considered to be the 9th planet of the solar system. At that time, the authority to decide on the name of this planet rested with Lowell Observatory and Mr. Vest Slipher, who was the director of the observatory. Percival” and other candidates were listed, but none of them came to mind… At that time, Pluto’s godfather, “Venice Barney,” an 11-year-old girl at the time, heard from her grandfather that a new planet had been discovered, and that the planet was very difficult to see. When Pluto proposed the name “Pluto” to his grandfather because he could disappear, everyone liked the name and it was adopted.

It’s amazing how an 11-year-old girl’s naming sense is outstanding! ? If it was me…I thought about it, but I can’t come up with it?

 

A little off topic, but why is Pluto no longer a planet? The question still remains. The reason for this was that the definition of a planet, which had been ambiguous until now, was reviewed. At the International Astronomical Union General Assembly held in Prague, Czech Republic in August 2006, a new scientific definition of a planet was decided. and is spherical due to the gravitational force generated from it”, and “it is by far the largest around its orbit”.

 

Here, Pluto is smaller than the Moon, and in 1992, more than 1,000 objects similar in size to Pluto were found near Pluto, and in 2005, a planet larger than Pluto, 2003UB313, was discovered. It seems that it has been removed from the “planet” because it has been done.

Even though it has become the 9th planet in the solar system, it might have been a lawsuit for me to be excluded from the definition as a planet. And it seems that the atmosphere is blue, and a heart-shaped nitrogen glacier has been discovered one after another, so I would like to look forward to new discoveries in the future. And I would like to continue to secretly endorse Pluto.
