ここ最近また寒さが戻ってきたような、１月らしい気候とも言えるような寒い日が続いております。

それでも今週は最高気温１１度くらいまで上がっているようですが、来週はかなり冷えるようでして名古屋でも雪の予報まで出ている日もありますのでご注意くださいませ。

 

 

さて、２０２３年に入って２週間ほど経ってしまいましたが、皆さま「ガレット・デ・ロワ（Galette des Rois）」ご存知ですか？

 

 

新年をお祝いするにふさわしいフランスの伝統菓子のひとつで、折込パイ生地とアーモンドクリームで構成されたシンプルな焼き菓子で表面の美しい飾り包丁が特徴的です。

 

キリスト教の祝日である「エピファニー（Epiphanie）」を祝って食べられるお菓子とされていて、フランス現地でも１月６日に限らず１月中は美しいガレット・デ・ロワがお菓子屋さんやパン屋さんケーキ屋さんの店頭に美しく飾られるそうです。

 

日本国内でよく見かける折込パイ生地にアーモンドクリームをサンドするこの「ガレット・デ・ロワ」は主にフランス北部で見られるようでして、南部ではまた少し違う味付けになっているのだとか。

 

実はこのガレット・デ・ロワ、切り分けた中に「フェーブ」と呼ばれる豆人形が入っているんです！入っていた人は王冠を被り、王様（または王妃）として祝福を受け、その年一年を幸運に過ごせると言われています。

 

今回いただいたガレット・デ・ロワの中にはアーモンドが入っていて、慎重に食べ進めていきましたが残念ながら私の中には入っていませんでした。幸先が不安になります…。

 

 

そもそも「ガレット（Galette）」とは円形で平たく焼いたお菓子のことで、もっとも古いお菓子の形態とされていて、新石器時代熱した石の上で穀物の粥を焼いたのが始まりなのだとか。

 

「ガレット・デ・ロワ（Galette des Rois）」は和訳で「王様のガレット」と紹介され、この王様とは最初にイエス・キリストを礼拝した「東方三賢人」「東方の三博士」と呼ばれる三人の王を指すもの。まさに「ガレット・デ・ロワ」が公現祭を象徴する伝統菓子であることがわかりますね。

 

 

そして「ガレット・デ・ロワ」には欠かせない「フェーブ」。

一番のお楽しみでもある「フェーブ」は、世界中にコレクターがいる人気アイテムなのです。その年そのお店だけの限定フェーブなどもあり、これを集めるために１月中さまざまな名店を渡り歩いて食べ比べる強者もいるのだとか。

 

また飾り包丁のデザインも様々あり、放射状の模様だけでなく、月桂樹を象った葉っぱの模様や、麦の穂を象った矢羽模様などいくつものバリエーションがあり、これもまた職人の腕の見せどころのひとつとされています。

 

まだ１月中は「ガレット・デ・ロワ」販売されているようですので、まだ食べたことがないという方はぜひこの機会に一度召し上がってみてはいかがでしょうか。

One of the traditional French confectionery suitable for celebrating the New Year, it is a simple baked confectionery consisting of folded pie crust and almond cream, and is characterized by a beautiful decorative knife on the surface.

 

It is said to be a sweet that can be eaten to celebrate the Christian holiday “Epiphanie”. It seems that it will be beautifully displayed in the shop front of the bakery and cake shop.

 

This “galette des rois”, which is sandwiched with almond cream in a folded pie crust that is often seen in Japan, seems to be mainly seen in northern France, and the southern part has a slightly different seasoning.

 

Actually, this galette des rois contains a bean doll called “feve” inside! Those who enter are said to wear a crown, be blessed as a king (or queen), and be blessed with good fortune for the year ahead. The galette des rois I received this time contained almonds, and I carefully ate them, but unfortunately they were not inside me. I’m worried about the future.

 

A “Galette” is a round, flat cake that is baked, and is considered to be the oldest form of sweets. That’s what it is.

 

“Galette des Rois” is introduced as “King’s Galette” in Japanese translation. It refers to the king of men. You can see that “Galette des Rois” is a traditional confectionery that symbolizes the Epiphany Festival.

 

And “Fave” is indispensable for “Galette des Rois”. The fave, which is also the most fun, is a popular item with collectors all over the world. There are also limited faves that are only available at that store that year, and some strong people go to various famous stores throughout January to collect them.

 

It seems that “Galette des Rois” is still on sale in January, so if you haven’t tried it yet, why not take this opportunity to try it?
